One of the oldest and most mysterious comedy clubs in LA is the revered Comedy & Magic Club in Hermosa Beach. Alternatively, one of the newest and yet also, incredibly mysterious comedy clubs is The Stand Up Comedy Club in Bellflower, CA. They exist on either extreme of LA County and one man books both of them, Richard Barrett. We talk to Richard about how exactly he pulls that off and what goes into bringing stand-up to two very different cities as well as giving deserving comics as much work as he can.

1) Our 2011 Emmys Summary: Modern Family is the Emmy’s favorite comedy, Louis C.K. didn’t win anything, The Big Bang Theory did win something, Outstanding Guest Actor in A Comedy Series is an award, despite moving to TBS, Conan loses out to NBC again, and we still think awards shows shouldn’t be televised.

Morning Debriefing 8/29/11

1) MTV’s scripted horror-comedy series Death Valley premieres tonight and definitely shows some promise and a welcome spin on the “emo-monster genre” that has dominated entertainment over the last 5 years. Let’s give it a chance and watch (10:30PM MTV).

1) Nick Kroll’s Thank You Very Cool to be released uncensored and uncut on DVD on Sept. 13th. We couldn’t get any news about his sketch show, Nick Show Kroll, from Nick as he’s busy with the League, but we’ll keep you updated.

2) The Comedy Store’s Alf Lamont details the changing environment of comedy and how comedy clubs need to change if they expect to survive/live up to their job title. Please read this, it’s important.

3) There’s still time to get in a short, or if you have a feature somehow in your back pocket, into the Sundance Film Festival, but you better get to Fed Ex pronto (deadline-to be received by Sept. 2nd & late deadline-to be received by Sept. 23rd).

4) Though Rob Delaney and Paul Danke have been killing it posting on Vice and Earwolf and Megan Amram has lifted tweeting to an art form, the role of comedy in novel form it’s vastly overlooked when it shouldn’t be. Splitsider investigates.

You do know that means that the rights to Transformers 6, 7, 8, all the way up to Transformers 10 are probably locked down by Michael Bay? 8) Yesterday, the Comedy Bureau posted the article, “Why are THEY on the Show?” about the unfortunate trading of spots on shows that happens in LA and some readers were wondering a few things. Specifically, The Comic’s Comic wondered about comics who struggle to get stage time starting their own room. I have no problem with other comics starting their own room to get their own stage time if they can’t get it elsewhere. Again, I reiterate stay away from trading spots. Whether they are good or bad as comics is a matter of subjectivity to me really, but, as I point out in the article, if they can find an audience of their own, my opinion doesn’t really matter. Another reader wondered that if a person works the Haha, Ice House, Comedy Store, Improv that they should get a shot at performing at another room. First off, there are plenty of comics that are (and I’m putting this very politely) raw that get to perform at all of those clubs. Once more, as I pointed in the article, plenty of comics can get laughs, but if they’re not funny to the booker, why should the booker put them up? Last week, I saw someone do nothing but offensive material jumbling up the most controversial topics to date (i.e. Libya, Tsunami, and Liz Taylor’s Death) into one dick joke ridden mess and kill. Did I laugh? I didn’t even smile. Just because this comic happened to do good on a certain night because they had a good spot on the show, I don’t feel obligated or guilted to promote their comedy as, plain and simple, I don’t find them funny. Morning Debriefing 3/7/11

1) NY Comedian Mike DeStefano was just reported of having died of a heart attack. Though this site is mostly dedicated to LA, our condolences go to a comedian that overcame and brought laughter to many though his unflinching honesty.

2) Last night, I took part in my first roast and unfortunately most of my act deals with roasting myself, which is the angle that I took while dishing out insults. I’m pretty sure the only person that appreciates this approach is the guest of honor being roasted, to all those planning on partaking in a roast in the near future.

3) The LA Times thinks its great that Aziz Ansari thinks Kumail Nanjiani is really funny.
