James Corden to Leave ‘The Late Late Show’ Next Year

April 28, 2022
News
james corden, late late show

In the world of late night, The Late Late Show always seems to be a flashpoint for change, even though it, historically, not been as big as The Tonight Show or its permanent lead-in, The Late Show. From Tom Snyder to Craig Kilborn to Craig Ferguson to James Corden, it has always been in the later slot, playing as a sibling to The Late Show, but been a spot that has gotten to divert itself, in so many ways, from a lot of the rest of late night for decades now. Ferguson’s monologue would often not be topical and be more of an actual fascinating dive into whatever he was thinking about, Corden did karaoke with celebrities in cars, etc.

As of today, the chapter turns yet again for The Late Late Show with James Corden announcing that he will be stepping down as host of The Late Late Show next year, making for an 8 year run. Corden is one of the newer personalities in late night (as compared to Colbert or Fallon), but he is far from the youngest with upstarts like Desus & Mero and Ziwe really shaking the late night format up on premium cable.

So, as you ponder how Corden went from taping his first episode in someone’s home to having some of the most viral clips in late night and what you might watch over and over again, the inevitable question of The Late Late Show’s future presents itself.

What will CBS do when 2023 rolls around?

Conventional thinking might point towards getting another charming Brit to take on the 12:30am slot, but we have been far from conventional for several years now. Late night itself is at a crossroads where it would seem the celebrity panel and topical monologue format devised by Steve Allen decades ago is too tired of a format to keep soldiering on. Of course, we always want great comedians to have bigger platforms and having your own late night talk show can be a great way to do that, but we also wouldn’t be surprised if the reshuffling of Viacom CBS into Paramount will see a different future for late night (and perhaps having only one late night talk show).

It’s all conjecture at this point (unless Paramount has already sent out a press release about their plans as we’re currently writing these words), but you can also spend this time pondering if Corden will do more CGI based movie musicals in the not so distant future.

Desus & Mero Try (Sort of) to Work Clean

April 28, 2022
News
desus & mero, desus nice, going blue, showtime, the kid mero, working clean

Part of calling yourself the #1 show in late night is having a broad appeal across all demographics, which includes age (i.e. can you appeal to the whole family). While Desus Nice and The Kid Mero have built their reputation on artfully weaving riffs out of the bluest strings of euphemisms and expletives, they “wanted” to give working clean (i.e. seeing what being on The Tonight Show’s slot on NBC) would really be like.

As a digital exclusive, you can watch Desus & Mero somewhat try to have “good clean fun” (though they do have to contend with stories that are such easy, low hanging fruit for going dirty).

See how long they last trying to be TV clean here (spoiler alert, not even 5 min.)

Pick of the Day: Tammercise Returns! (in LA) 5/1

April 27, 2022
News
los angeles comedy, madeline wager

Thanks to the wondrous mind and sheer blood, sweat, tears, and talent of one Madeline Wager, Tammercise was brought into this world to simultaneously give us a cathartic comedy show and a bit of a workout (if you wanted to opt into to non-professional aerobics).

Created years ago (or decades ago if you feel like the last two years have passed slower than dog years), Tammercise would be an actual aerobics “class” that had a hysterical solo show woven through it addressing the trials and tribulations of Tami’s personal life, relationships, family, and all. So, you’d get a workout both through laughing and moving your body in neon colored spandex (though you’d have to bring that yourself).

Thank goodness that Tammercise is returning finally this coming Sunday at 11AM PT in Glendale’s Verdugo Park. You can join in at any level that you want for $5 suggested donation (and we highly suggest that you make sure get this in before Sunday brunch this weekend). Get more details @tammercise on IG.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 109: Alice Hamilton & Shots Fired

April 27, 2022
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
alice hamilton, cex kriminal, chris d'elia, stand up comedy

Though roasting in comedy has taken on a new chapter via the Comedy Central Roasts and Roast Battle, it’s rare to see actual fury channeled into comedy. It has also even been rarer that the predators and monsters within comedy are held accountable in a meaningful way. Alice Hamilton, a rising comedian in the LA scene, struck both rare chords with her self-produced and self-released half hour special CEX KRIMINAL, which goes for the jugular, in great detail, of all the alleged and confirmed pests/predators/pieces of trash that she can think of.

We have Alice on to talk about how she came to put all of this together in the matter of a few weeks (or days if you ask her) and what such a special means in the art form of comedy.

Follow Alice @alicerhamilton on Twitter and @missalicehamilton on IG and watch CEX KRIMINAL here.

Hacks Season 2 Trailer Looks to Up the Ante

April 26, 2022
News
hacks, hannah einbinder, hbo max, jean smart, season 2, trailer

The first season of Hacks from Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky brought us all, for our money, the best depiction of stand-up in any sort of scripted TV or movie. It also really sunk its teeth into how the goal posts keep moving for women in entertainment, specifically in comedy and how class and privilege underhandedly weave themselves into the tapestry. Jean Smart and Hannah Einbinder capture all of these dynamics in their dazzling pairing and made us want season 2 as soon as we finishing speeding through season 1.

Thank goodness that the second season of the instant critical and fan darling is coming very, very soon on Thurs. May 12th on HBO Max and we’ll get to see what famed comedian Deborah Vance (a fictionalized version of many comedians, but very much drawing from comedy legend Joan Rivers) working on a whole new hour on the road while also making a creative pivot to more personal material. As we said in the headline, the trailer for season 2 seems to up the ante from season 1 and it might be even wilder (especially if Megan Stalter gets more screen time).

See for yourself with the season 2 trailer for Hacks here.

The ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies’ Trailer Shows We’re in the Thick of a Horror Comedy Wave

April 26, 2022
News
Amandla Stenberg, Chase Sui Wonders, halina reijn, lee pace, Maria Bakalova, Myha'la Herrold, pete davidson, Rachel Sennott

Ever since Shaun of the Dead, there has always been a playful dipping of the toe of comedy into horror (or vice versa depending on how intentionally bad the horror is). The mixing of the two genres aren’t new, but there is a noticeable uptick in the volume over the last few years. What We Do In the Shadows, The Baby, Astrid & Lily Save the World, and many more are part of the latest tide rolling in of comedy and horror. Why exactly is horror comedy is coming up is a mystery, but, possibly, we feel, it could be just the sort of the anxiety and rage fueled comedy that’s reflective of our time.

One of the latest additions to the horror comedy/comedy horror mix will be the Sundance hit Bodies Bodies Bodies from Halina Reijn starring Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Myha’la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders, Rachel Sennott, with Lee Pace and Pete Davidson. The humor woven in here, from the trailer, feels darkly, yet joyfully sharp and there seems to be a pretty playful use of Pete Davidson and the public’s perceived image of him.

There is a Search Party vibe here that we’re really on board for and Aug. 5th, Bodies Bodies Bodies release date, will hopefully come a bit quicker so we can revel in the millenial/Gen Z funny mayhem. Take a gander at all of this with the official trailer here.

Pick of the Day: Jen Kirkman: Gonna Panic Like It’s 1999 (in NYC) 6/15-8/21

April 26, 2022
News
jen kirkman, nyc comedy, solo show, storytelling

Following her genius final stand-up album OK, Gen-X, Jen Kirkman is very much done with stand-up comedy for so many heartbreaking reasons. That said, we’re thrilled to know that she’s not done with performing as Jen has set up a run of work in progress solo shows this Summer at Union Hall entitled, Gonna Panic Like It’s 1999.

Off of that perfection of a title, she’s going to run through a collection of stories that she has worked on throughout the years, but never made it all into one solo show that include, but are definitely not limited to:

-Her grandmother’s views of Armageddon that were validated by her childhood priest.
-Trying to move to Hollywood to live on the set of “Family Ties.”
-Trying to get famous by tap dancing in the school talent show.
-Taking a fear of flying course and failing the graduation flight due to an outburst on the plane.
-On Y2K when the world didn’t end….realizing she had no idea how to live life.

Jen is, without a doubt, one of comedy’s best storytellers and this upcoming run for her solo shows will and the entire spectrum of emotional colors that will run this show ought to be something beautiful.

Dates for the show are as follows:

6/15 @ 7:30PM ET
6/17 @ 7:30PM ET
6/26 @ 5:30PM ET
7/14 @ 7:30PM ET
7/17 @ 5;30PM ET
7/31 @ 5;30PM ET
8/7 @ 5:30PM ET
8/17 @ 7:30PM ET
8/21 @ 5:30PM ET

Tickets are $20 a pop and you better snag them quick as it doesn’t get much more intimate than Union Hall.

Watch the Trailer for Joel Kim Booster’s Jane Austen-ish Queer Rom Com “Fire Island”

April 25, 2022
News
bowen yang, joel kim booster, margaret cho, matt rogers

We’re thrilled that Joel Kim Booster’s Fire Island is actually seeing the light of day on a big platform like Hulu. Originally, it was given a series order at Quibi and, well, Quibi is now the second newest joke reference for a failed streaming service thanks to CNN+ getting shuddered almost immediately.

The inception of the idea is a modern day, gay riff on Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice and, from the looks of the trailer, Joel along with Bowen Yang, Margaret Cho, and many more, deliver on that idea to a tee. Plenty has been said about Billy Eichner’s Bros, but Fire Island is coming out Jun. 3rd, just a month or two earlier than Bros, and might deserve just as much attention/praise.

Go take the first look at Fire Island and see for yourself here.

Pick of the Day: Bake Stuff with Lindsay Adams (in LA) 5/11

April 25, 2022
News
elysian, lindsay adams, max beasley, renee gauthier

Though we may have said it before, we’ll loudly and proudly say it again: Bake Stuff with Lindsay Adams will make you forget about every other cooking show you’ve binged watch over the last several years.

For the uninitiated, Lindsay Adams takes the format of what would be your run of the mill, “uplifting”, conflict-free baking show and then works in her own brand of reformed mean girl comedy that includes plenty of going in deep with the audience, amazing “stupid games”, and, of course, some of the most delicious baked goods that you’ve ever had a live comedy show.

This is one of those shows that we loved and missed so dearly during lockdown and we’re thrilled that it’s making a comeback at The Elysian on Wed. May 11th at 7PM PT. Lindsay will be assisted by rising star comedian Max Beasley, feature a very special guest Renee Gauthier, and baking up a transcendent Chicago Steakhouse Carrot Cake.

The antithesis of your typical wholesome tv baking show, it’s chaos in the most fun way possible. Along with a live step-by-step baking demonstration, there’s stand-up comedy, audience participation, and delightfully stupid games. We’ll be making Chicago Steakhouse Carrot Cake, Renee Gauthier will be our special guest, and Max Beasley is our on-hand assistant. Because we know you’ll ask – YES, you’ll get to taste the cake!

Tickets are $16 and you’re definitely getting more than your money’s worth for this one. So, go snag your tickets right here right now.

Get and Enjoy Amy Miller’s Sophomore Album “California King”

April 22, 2022
News
amy miller, california king, comedy album, stand up comedy

So much of the last few years has been defined by disruption. Nothing is as it was and everything violently changed in just a handful of days over two years ago. Now, there is so much dust still settling (and, not to mention, droplets) as we’re rolling through 2022 with dread, apathy, and a yearning for some sort of relief or peace.

Amy Miller who was already on the way to having a banner year from 2019 leading into 2020 picked up right where she left off with both half hour Comedy Central special and, especially, her debut album, California King. Ever clever and going-the-extra-mile to be inclusive, Amy delivers an hour of comedy that’s a calming breeze of joy and a fun cocktail that has a stiff pour of your spirit of choice. California King captures not only a return of live, in-person comedy as we all are forced to navigate the most unprecedented times in all of our lives (we didn’t even know that Russia was going to invade Ukraine at the time of the recording), but such a exuberant reminder that we’re not alone, no matter how alone we all felt in the last two years (or 6 or 12 if you’ve been carrying stress from the housing market crash or Trump becoming POTUS).

Please get and enjoy a splendid sophomore hour, California King, from the funniest people that you should really get to know more on these days, Amy Miller, now available on streaming platforms and CD and vinyl.

Emmy Blotnick Makes a Case for Humans Getting Pampered Like Dogs

April 22, 2022
News
colbert, emmy blotnick, late night, stand up comedy

At this point in human history, there are many dogs that get treated so well that their humans don’t take care of themselves nearly as well. We’d hope that you’ve made it to this side of the pandemic with the understanding that you do actually have to active steps to take better care of yourself and that you might not be able to help others if you can’t help yourself.

Emmy Blotnick’s latest late night set hinges on radical self-care, so radical that perhaps humans should show themselves as much care as the pets that they adore, obsess over, or sometimes call their children. Blotnick dazzled the Colbert stage once again for a delight, uplifting late night set and you can (and should) watch it here.

Bob Odenkirk Is Officially Returning to (Kind of) Comedy with ‘Straight Man’ Series Order

April 21, 2022
News
amc, bob odenkirk, series order, straight man

(via THR)

For how iconic Bob Odenkirk is as a seminal figure in comedy history, a founder of so-called “alternative comedy”, and the co-star and co-creator of one of the most renowned sketch comedy series, Mr. Show, it’s strange to know that there is a whole generation of people that know him primarily for his work on Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul. Odenkirk has been hailed as one of TV’s great characters Saul Goodman in this latest Golden Age of Television (and is pretty damn great in the not-praised-enough Undone), but that doesn’t mean that Bob will go the route of Richard Belzer (a lauded stand-up that is most known now for Law & Order).

Odenkirk has done bits here and there (and even done another round of sketch comedy via Netflix with With Bob & David), but it has been a long time since he has set his sights entirely on comedy. This next project at AMC (smart move on AMC’s part by keeping him in the fold) will be a dramedy that will have Bob at an English Department head at and underfunded rust belt college. Perhaps, a darker, more adult, college version of Abbott Elementary? Maybe, it’ll be a bit like the cameo he had on I Think You Should Leave?

It’s hard to say at this point, but the possibilities given Bob’s path that has wound thoroughly through praise and success in both sides of the comedy/drama spectrum leaves the world wide open. AMC’s penchant for anything comedy is more on the darker/dramatic side as shown by Kevin Can Go F Himself.

We’ll just have to wait for a teaser/trailer to see what Bob has up his sleeve with this project that’ll be called Straight Man, but we’re excited that Bob is coming back to, even partially, to comedy.

Please Enjoy Jay Jurden’s Latest Late Night Set on Corden

April 21, 2022
News
jay jurden, late late show, late night, stand up comedy

Punchline for punchline, Jay Jurden has proven himself to be one of the best joke writers/tellers working today. There is so many punches and tags in his jokes that even we stop thinking about the classical structure of his stand-up and just how precisely everything fits together. It’s unmistakably good old fashioned stand-up, but cleverly made so splendid for everyone in 2022.

Jay already showed off his skills in his late night debut in 2019 on The Tonight Show and he just did it again for second late night set that aired on last night’s Late Late Show with James Corden.

Please enjoy it and brighten your day because it’s so good here.

Pick of the Day: Performance Anxiety (in LA) 4/26

LA has had a penchant for doing comedy shows in odd places for decades, long before any sort of pandemic reached the county line.

One of those spots was the famed adult toy store, The Pleasure Chest, that featured the bi-weekly delight known as Performance Anxiety, hosted by Eli Olsberg. The last Performance Anxiety that was on the books was on Mar. 10, 2020 and it has been so long since that time that we forgot to see if it might even come back or if there would ever be anything to happen live and in person back at The Pleasure Chest.

Thankfully, it’s another thing that is confidently coming back to this side of the pandemic on Tues. Apr. 26th at 8PM PT (with the same nice price that they had in 2020, $7) and the same sort of fantastic line-up of comics surrounded by a bunch of sex toys and accessories.

This very first post-lockdown Performance Anxiety will feature the likes of Adam Conover, Joe Mande, River Butcher, Blair Socci, Hampton Yount, Dana Donnelly, and Subhah Agarwal.

Go get your tickets right now right here for one of the kinkier comedy shows that you’ll ever go to.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 108: Sara June & All Comedy, Everywhere, All at Once

arsenio, julia roberts, sara june

These are the days of the comedy multi-hyphenates. Not only does that mean that taking a 100% focus on one direction within comedy isn’t very feasible anymore, it has inspired many comedian of the current and recent generations to expand their repertoire into all sorts of different corners.

This week, we chat it up with one of our favorite comedy multi-hyphenates, Sara June. A writer/comedian/director, Sara’s work has had us busting up, both on stage and on the screen (that includes her most recent short Bathroom Time) and we thus talk about anything from the inner workings of trying to make it as a comedy director these days to balancing that with performing live to bed frames and starting an indie fashion label.

Also, “hot” takes on Arsenio returning for a short run and Julia Roberts taking 20 years off of rom coms.

Sheng Wang Is Getting a Netflix Hour Special with Ali Wong Directing

April 20, 2022
News
ali wong, comedy special, netflix, sheng wang, stand up comedy

(via Variety)

At this moment in comedy, very few voices are as unique as Sheng Wang. His measured cadence, calming ease on stage, and chill delivery are all extremely clever dressing for his perfectly written jokes. Wang has been one of comedy’s best artisans (with one of the most soothing voices to boot) for years now and has been well overdue for an hour special.

If you’ve gotten lucky enough to snag tickets to see Ali Wong recently, you might have seen Sheng open and know what we’re talking about. It’s great to see that Sheng will be one of the specials in Netflix’s comedy special pipeline coming up considering that the streaming giant has really saturated itself with so many specials from, perhaps, too many comedians that it’s harder and harder to stand out on the platform.

Thank goodness that Netflix has wised up and given him an hour special with his good friend Ali Wong attached to produce and direct. If you’re in or around the LA area on Jun. 12th, you be witness to this debut hour special from Sheng at either 6PM PT or 8PM PT. Pre-sale tickets go on sale tomorrow at 10AM PT w/code PEPPER and GA goes on sale at 5/22 at 10AM PT all at shengwangtime.com. So, you better set a reminder.

Pick of the Day: Julie Klausner: Medleys and Other New Variants (in LA) 4/29-5/1

April 20, 2022
News
hotel cafe, julie klausner, los angeles comedy, musical comedy

The charmingly sardonic wit of Julie Klausner is usually reserved for NYC where she resides, leaving Angelenos to just obsess over her podcast, Double Threat, and TV show, Difficult People and experience her from afar.

Thankfully, Julie’s got a new shiny show she’s taking around including three nights at The Hotel Cafe in the heart of Hollywood. Called Medleys and Other New Variants, Julie has dug up some of the most delightfully obscure songs (one being from Kate Bush’s Silence of the Lambs musical for starters) and whipped some of her own “clevleys” (clever medleys) as well.

It’s such a special thing that Klausner is bringing to the City of Angels that the first two nights, 4/29 & 4/30 have sold out and there are only tickets for May 1st. You best get your tickets for $41.50 (includes fees) quick right here.

Alice Hamilton Scorches the Earth (i.e. Bad Men in Comedy) That Needed to Be Scorched in “CEX KRIMINAL”

April 19, 2022
News
alice hamilton, comedy special, stand up comedy

There has been so much debate over cancel culture in comedy that even saying that there is so much debate about cancel culture in comedy is a hackneyed notion. One of the most tiresome aspects of the argument is that those who have caused harm on or off stage don’t seem to suffer appropriate repercussions. Cancellation, as it is currently enacted, seems to be worn more like a faded prison tattoo than any sort of system for accountability and actionable change.

In fact, Louis C.K.’s ill gotten Grammy for Best Comedy Album might be a great beacon that signals the progress made in the last couple years for a gender equity/parity/safety in comedy still has gaping blind spots.

Alice Hamilton’s very first special CEX KRIMINAL is a red hot, firebrand response to this cancer in the art form of comedy. For a half hour, Hamilton spares no sex pest/criminal, alleged or confessed, even more boldly than you would see in most Comedy Central roasts or many Roast Battles, brutally laying into Chris D’Elia, Louis C.K., and a myriad of men that have gotten lost in the rush of being found out for taking on their worst demons. CEX KRIMINAL is a refreshing jolt of a rare sort of vitriol on stage, captured impassioned and potent, delivered with the hopes of taking the piss out of the monsters trying to put back on their sheep’s clothing and emphasizing it with searing punchlines throughout. The only thing we can remember in recent memory that was like this was Kelly Bachman’s rogue set where she grilled a post-expose Harvey Weinstein to his face at a private comedy show.

Hamilton, a rising comedian in the LA scene, could have drawn from a deep well of well observed, confidently delivered material that we’ve seen and thoroughly enjoyed (part of what got her to be on our 100 Best list last year), but she chose to take a more Kill-Bill-style route with a list of targets to dispatch and, at the very least, make sure the world doesn’t forget how truly absurd it is the bad in comedy gets to fester on.

Watch, enjoy, and revel what is the most unfiltered (and thank goodness that it is) comedy special with Alice Hamilton: CEX KRIMINAL here.

In November 2021, we thought we had reached a threshold where we all the things that we knew and love in comedy could somewhat return to happening as regularly scheduled pre-pandemic.

Then, Omicron hit and set most folks/shows/etc. back for months. Thankfully, we’re back to where they rescheduled their shows to or decided to return again and that includes one of LA’s torch bearing shows, Blamblamblam. Faithfully housed in what seems like the lower decks of tall ship in K-Town’s one and only R-Bar, Blam has offered up an otherworldly monthly comedy show for almost a decade and a half.

There’s such a mystical energy to it even when it’s simply a well curated collection of comedians from many corners and disciplines of the art form by one DeMorge Brown. This 2nd return of Blamblamblam is set for this Tues. Apr. 19th at 9PM ish PT (doors at 7PM PT) and a barnburner of a line-up including Ron Lynch, Brodie Reed, Max Beasley, Anna Seregina & Kyle Mizono, Chris Thayer, James Adomian, Vanessa Jeha, Steph Tolev, Brian Kiley, and host Paul Danke & resident mischief starter Davey Johnson are all set to welcome Blam back into the world of living once more.

Oh yeah, it’s free to attend in case we didn’t sell you on it enough already.

R.I.P. Sara Mostajabi, 1985-2022

April 15, 2022
News
sara mostajabi

The recent passing of Louie Anderson, Bob Saget, and Gilbert Gottfried are the final milestones of storied careers in comedy. There’s a massive library of each of their work available for you to explore and celebrate the memory of what they brought the world with their comedic artistry.

However, there are many comedians that are taken away from us before any of us even come close to knowing what they could have done.

Unfortunately, one, Sara Mostajabi, will be the latest addition to that group. For what must have been dozens and dozens of times we saw her live, we really enjoyed her penchant for some of the darkest humor and unflinching presence on stage when delivering it at stages all around LA including The Comedy Store. According to her obituary, she was the first woman to work the door at The Comedy Store, which has been one of the few clearer paths to becoming a paid regular at one of the world’s most revered comedy stages. We sincerely hope, with all of that in mind, that you got to catch her somewhere while she was around.

There are YouTube clips that where you can see the potential, but more importantly, remember her fondly for the time that she gave us when she took the mic.

Mostajabi passed away over a week ago on April 6th, 2022 and services were held this past week.

Rest in peace and power, Sara.

Talkies (in LA) 5/19

News
aviva siegel, george chen, los angeles comedy, nick stargu, talkies, variety show, whammy analog media

Once upon a time one of San Francisco’s best secret spots for comedy was the basement for Lost Weekend Video. Cynic Cave would be a weekly standing appointment for great indie, underground comedy, not to mention the irresistible kitsch of going back in time to renting physical media to watch movies/TV shows.

Sadly, Lost Weekend Video and its comedy filled basement are no more, but the spirit might just have found a new spark in the newly forged VHS only store, Whammy Analog Media, in Echo Park and shows like SF’s super-fun-quirky-stand-up-short-film variety show Talkies with Aviva Siegel, George Chen, and Nick Stargu. Truly, Whammy Analog Media is the closest thing you’ll have to actually traveling back in time to the 90s and, almost for that alone, you should check their shows out (though they’ve had and will have a bunch of very cool, offbeat events).

This new, LA version of Talkies will have its Whammy Analog Media on Thurs. May 19th at 8PM PT w/a grand LA line-up of Frankie Quinones, Anna Seregina, Andy Rider, Chaki, and a short film from Sara June.

Tickets are available now for a sliding scale of $5-$20 and you ought to snag them up quick (space is limited).

Pick of the Day: The Harold Experience (in LA) 4/25

broadwater, harold night, improv comedy, los angeles comedy, the comedy coop

Nearly every improv team worth their salt has had their rounds doing this very time honored form of improv scene that challenge every one involved to have seemingly disparate scenes come together in an organic way at the end of a set. Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays between UCB Franklin and UCB Sunset here in LA and just as much in UCB in NYC when all those were alive and kicking used to be dedicated to the specific long form improvisational form known as the Harold.

With theaters going dark because of COVID-19, there has been a stark absence of long form improv (and everything) of any kind, but definitely a large void where several routine Harold performances would happen at improv theaters across the country.

The Comedy Coop LA, much of which is comprised of former UCB/Second City/iO/Groundlings alums, is aiming to bringing that institution back with The Harold Experience. Over the course of four hours, 6 teams, including some original UCB house teams, will dive into the Harold once again and weave improv gold before your very eyes on Mon. Apr. 25th at The Broadwater Mainstage.

That’ll include:

7 PM SHOW – Griffith Park and Outside Dog

8:30 PM SHOW – YETI and The Producers

10 PM SHOW – The IT Factor and Santa Monica Pier

Some of those teams will be a mash-up of great improvisers such as Lyndsey Frank, Eli Gonzalez, Dayna LoBosco, Jenna Bryson, PJ McCormick, Leonard Smith Jr, Derrick Hackett, Greg Smith, Karen Baughn, Ted Asbaghi, Max Toretti, Colin McGurk, Genetra Tull, Paul Heredia, Carl Tart, Lilan Bowden, Ruha Taslimi, Santina Muha, Samat Turgunbaev, Mark Wilson, Adam Gottfried, Jorge Thomson, Bob Hsiao, Michael Roselle, Sarah Baggot, Monte Montepare, Andy Bustillos, Kelly Vrooman, Artin Sarkysian, David Luong, Sam Calpadi, Jesse Merrill, Zef Hussain, Kelly Hannah

Best of all, it’s the same price you’d pay for a Harold Night, $5. Go get your tickets right now right here.

Get Your First Look at Season 2 of Hacks (Teaser)

Hacks, the latest freshman single cam comedy to be critically acclaimed and award winning out of the gate (Atlanta and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend being the others in recent memory) has been such a lauded show that it, like those others freshman phenoms, feels like it has been around a lot longer than it actually has.

Well, that’s kind of what happens when a show is that good out of the gate. Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, Jen Statsky, Jean Smart, and Hannah Einbinder all make for one of the best explorations of stand-up comedy and fighting your way through the entertainment biz as a woman, no matter where you are in age or station, and the second season has been highly anticipated since the credits rolled for season 1.

Lucky for us all, season 2 is kicking off very soon, Thurs. May 12th to be exact, on HBO Max. You can take your very first look at all the fights and cool looks of mutual respect between Ava and Deborah and everything in between here (as this season will follow them out of Vegas and on the road).
