The ‘Bodies Bodies Bodies’ Trailer Shows We’re in the Thick of a Horror Comedy Wave

April 26, 2022
News

Ever since Shaun of the Dead, there has always been a playful dipping of the toe of comedy into horror (or vice versa depending on how intentionally bad the horror is). The mixing of the two genres aren’t new, but there is a noticeable uptick in the volume over the last few years. What We Do In the Shadows, The Baby, Astrid & Lily Save the World, and many more are part of the latest tide rolling in of comedy and horror. Why exactly is horror comedy is coming up is a mystery, but, possibly, we feel, it could be just the sort of the anxiety and rage fueled comedy that’s reflective of our time.

One of the latest additions to the horror comedy/comedy horror mix will be the Sundance hit Bodies Bodies Bodies from Halina Reijn starring Amandla Stenberg, Maria Bakalova, Myha’la Herrold, Chase Sui Wonders, Rachel Sennott, with Lee Pace and Pete Davidson. The humor woven in here, from the trailer, feels darkly, yet joyfully sharp and there seems to be a pretty playful use of Pete Davidson and the public’s perceived image of him.

There is a Search Party vibe here that we’re really on board for and Aug. 5th, Bodies Bodies Bodies release date, will hopefully come a bit quicker so we can revel in the millenial/Gen Z funny mayhem. Take a gander at all of this with the official trailer here.

Though you might be skeptical, there are indeed, real, honest, good industry folks that are less about the industry than their job title might suggest. Cue in one of our favorite industry folks, producer Danielle Lee, who has brought great and wonderful things to stages and screens of all sizes across the country and is a fierce supporter of the best, forward thinking comedy out there. TCB’s Jake Kroeger sits down with Danielle to talk shop and specifically get an industry insider perspective on how comedians can best serve themselves going forward in 2022.

Pete Davidson, Colin Jost, Paul Italia Go in on a Decommissioned Ferry to Open Up a Live Venue

(via NBC News)

Both hailing from SNL and Staten Island, Pete Davidson and Colin Jost just won an auction for a decommissioned ferry boat that would sail to, you guessed it, Staten Island. They paid just a few smidges over a quarter of a million dollars along with the co-founder of The Stand comedy club, Paul Italia.

The idea here is that they’ll make a venue on the ferry, though whether the 277 ft. John F. Kennedy, which was decommissioned because of mechanical issues, will actually be a venue that floats in and around NYC or stays permanently docked remains to be seen.

In either case, Davidson, Jost, and Italia will open up another space for comedy, music, and other performances to happen, which is great news considering what COVID-19 has done to NYC live spaces in the last two years. Details as to the name or when they might open have yet to be announced, but we’d be surprised if Staten Island didn’t figure into the name of their club somehow.

As you can clearly see in the flyer above, that headline could go way longer as the more fan-focused JFL festival in Toronto, JFL42, is packed with top shelf talent that covers so many eras, styles, sensibilities, etc. of comedy that it might be worth making the trek out to Toronto to see all of that in one week, especially if you don’t live in LA or NYC.

You’ve got some time as JFL42 isn’t until mid Sept., but you best get your passes and tickets now (the VIP Pass already sold out). Passes are going for $84-$199 (not including service charges). Go get more details and tickets/passes here.

Pete Davidson Will Be The Only New Cast Member on This Season of SNL, Michael Patrick O’Brien Returning as Writer Only

(via Deadline)

Following the announcement of the return of Michael Che, stand-up comedian Pete Davidson, who you probably saw do stand-up on Kimmel earlier this year, is set to be the only new cast member on the 40th season of Saturday Night Live, premiering later this month.

Additionally, Michael Patrick O’Brien who was featured in the cast last year is returning this season as a writer, leaving SNL with less three less players than last year.

However, as SNL casted Sasheer Zamata midseason, don’t think that all of this is written in stone.
