Pick of the Day: The Debt Gala (in NYC) 4/30

April 12, 2023
News
bell house, debt gala, drag, drew lausch, julio diaz, kerry coddett, nyc comedy, phoebe robinson, rip medical debt, variety show, zach teague

Though the U.S. Government is ending the public health emergency due to COVID-19, that doesn’t mean that the public at large in the good ol’ U.S. of A is free and clear of health emergencies overall. There are so many folks stuck in debt accrued through needing medical treatment to live and not having the money upfront. It’s one of the truly awful things about the American healthcare system and, thankfully, there are organizations like RIP Medical Debt that allow for the generosity and benevolence of others pay for said medical debt.

In support and celebration of their efforts, there will be a full on Debt Gala at The Bell House complete with music, comedy, drag, and magic hosted by two of NYC comedy’s finest hosts and song and dance men, Zach Teague & Drew Lausch. It actually be a more lively, less stuffy version of The Met Gala as the theme for the evening’s attire is “Garbage X Glamour” and the line-up includes:

MUSIC
Charlie O’Connor (Club Cumming)
Jelani Remy (The Lion King)
L Train Brass Band (Gov Ball)

COMEDY
Julio Diaz (Netflix)
Kerry Coddett (Showtime)
Sabrina Brier (New York Times)
Phoebe Robinson (HBO)

MAGIC
Rachel Wax (Penn & Teller)

DRAG
The Dragon Sisters (Vogue)

That’s pretty amazing for a Sunday night on Apr. 30th starting at 6PM if you ask us and, with that in mind, you better go get your tickets/pay off some medical debt here. If you can’t attend the show, but want to donate to RIP Medical Debt, you can do so here.

Pick of the Day: Good One Live! with Jesse David Fox (in NYC) 3/17

News

Process.

It’s one of the most mysterious and elusive elements in the art form of comedy. Trying to decipher an individual comedian’s process might actually be harder than making a room full of strangers laugh. That said, Jesse David Fox has done tremendous work in uncovering how comedians actually do their work and pull off that magic that is making people laugh with his long running podcast, Good One.

Fox is doing a special edition of the podcast that will show off his expertise in front of a live audience at Union Hall on Fri. Mar. 17th at 7PM. Phoebe Robinson, StraightioLab, Marcia Belsky, Francesca D’Uva, and possibly more will do short sets followed by an in-depth interview about said set.

It ought to be something special as you’ll get an in-real-time, up-close-and-personal look at exactly how some of NYC’s funniest do what they do best.

Tickets are $18.98. Go get them now before they probably sell out here.

Pick of the Day: Hopkins & Friends (in NYC) 1/22

Sometimes, there’s just an amazing line-up for a classic stand-up show at a comedy club and tickets are still available for not a crazy price and those things together are worthy of highlighting.

Such is the case of Hopkins & Friends at The Stand this Sunday. Along with host Jess Hopkins, an incredibly choice NYC line-up of Adam Pally, Phoebe Robinson, Moses Storm, Daniel Simonsen, James Austin Johnson, Dina Hashem, Ilana Glazer, and John Hopkins (assuming that’s not someone from the prestigious medical institution?) will be taking The Stand’s Main Room stage at 8PM on Jan. 22nd and you ought to know that will be one hell of a show.

Also, tickets are only $25 (and there’s no item minimum). Go get ’em before they sell out here.

Pick of the Day: Looking Forward to It (in NYC) 9/21

News
dan fox, david cross, Dylan Adler, josh gondelman, nyc comedy, phoebe robinson, Tina Friml, vote forward
Whether or not you’ve paid attention to the news recently, it’s pretty clear that voting engagement is as crucially important as it has ever been; probably more so. Thankfully, the comedy show that supports that very thing, Looking Forward to It, is coming to its latest edition next week in support of Vote Forward. In fact, all proceeds will go to them.
Of course, one of NYC comedy’s treasures, Josh Gondelman, will be hosting and they’ll have yet another massive line-up (of David Cross, Phoebe Robinson, Dylan Adler, Tina Friml, and Dan Fox) that you shouldn’t need to encourage you to go and support getting more people out to vote, but is there just in case you need that extra push.
This latest Looking Forward to It is set for Tues. Sept. 21st at 8PM ET at Littlefield in Brooklyn. Tickets are $15-$50 right now. Go get them here! Proof of vaccination will be required at the door.

Pick of the Day: Phoebe Robinson HBO Special Taping (in NYC) 8/13

News
comedy taping, free show, hbo max, ny comedy, phoebe robinson, tv taping

As live comedy is returning to some of the pace and volume that it used to be, so are exclusive tapings of comedy specials for big time networks and streaming services (and it won’t be something unprecedented like a drive-in or sitting at a converted part of Universal Studios).

The latest high profile special that will be taped will feature Phoebe Robinson, whom you ought to know from 2 Dope Queens/Doing the Most/Tiny Rep Books/guest hosting Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, for HBO Max. Robinson will be bringing her first hour filled with her hot takes on the world that are equal parts sharp and bubbly to the Brooklyn Botanical Garden on Fri. Aug. 13th for two shows, 8PM ET & 10PM ET.

Best of all, tickets are free and you best go RSVP for them right here right now.

Those conversations will be between the likes of Sacha Baron Cohen, Ziwe, Kathryn Hahn, Cecily Strong, Judith Light, Phoebe Robinson, Laura Dern, Maya Rudolph, Amanda Seyfried, and so many more stars, intriguing voices, etc. along with host Radhika Jones. Of the conversations that you’re privy to these days, you really might not want to miss these. You can get a full schedule/details here.

We told you that there would be plenty of big time comedy benefit shows for the Georgia Runoffs and, lordy lordy, there sure are. This latest one is being put up by the one and only Padma Lakshmi that’s very explicit in this regard by being called, “Padma Puts on a Virtual Comedy Show for the Georgia Runoff Elections: An Evening to Benefit FairFight”.

Stacey Abrams’ FairFight was instrumental in registering voters and contributing to Biden’s 2020 Election win and will undoubtedly be crucial in the upcoming special Georgia Senate Runoffs.

So, they tapped Padma for a live benefit show and she, in turn, got one hell of a line-up that includes:

Hasan Minhaj, Phoebe Robinson, Sarah Silverman, Chelsea Peretti, Kumail Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon, Benito Skinner, Mike Birbiglia, John Early, Roy Wood Jr., Julio Torres, Michelle Buteau, Patton Oswalt, Aparna Nancherla, Caleb Hearon, Wanda Sykes, Joel Kim Booster, Tituss Burgess, Meg Stalter, Patti Harrison, Nikki Glaser, Ayo Edebiri, Jo Firestone, Amber Ruffin, Dulce Sloan, Naomi Ekperigin, W. Kamau Bell, Mitra Jouhari, Sydnee Washington, Marie Faustin, and Andy Cohen.

There will also be music from King Princess, Perfume Genius, Waxahatchee, Brittany Howard, Local Natives, Aloe Blacc, and Cautious Clay.

Lastly, the evening’s virtual festivities will be hosted by none other than the Las Culturistas themselves, Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang.

Reads like a festival line-up, doesn’t it? Well, we still can’t do that in person right now, but you can enjoy this gigantic Padma Puts on a Virtual Comedy Show comedy live-stream on Thurs. Dec. 17th at 6PM PT/9PM ET at youtube.com/padmalakshmi and donate to FairFight here.

Get First Look at Amazon Comedy ‘Eulogy’ Special “Yearly Departed”

News

Though eulogies don’t really cross into the territory of comedy specials, this year hasn’t been a time for anything normal. Actually, 2020 is the focus of said special entitled, “Yearly Departed” and is a good-riddance send-off to the year that has and continues and will traumatize all of us living through it.

For 2020 getting kicked to the curb, this special has a marvelous and feisty line-up of comedy folks including Rachel Brosnahan, Tiffany Haddish, Patti Harrison, Natasha Legerro, Sarah Silverman, Natasha Rothwell, Ziwe, and Phoebe Robinson hosting for the evening.

It’s a roast of 2020 at 2020’s funeral and it sure looks like the socially distanced party had a hell of a time letting 2020 know what they thought of it (even though we’ll have to likely deal with so much of 2020 for a good chunk, if not most of, 2021).

Get your first look at YEARLY DEPARTED with its trailer here, then look for it to stream on Amazon Prime on the Eve of New Year’s Eve, Dec. 30th.

HBO Max Announces a New Trio of Specials from Colin Quinn, Phoebe Robinson, and Aida Rodriguez

August 21, 2020
News

Hot off the heels on releasing four different stand-up specials yesterday, HBO Max has just announced three more (in addition to the back half of the Team Coco specials whose production got interrupted by lockdown).

One will be a drive-in special curated, directed, and headlined by Colin Quinn taped in Brooklyn. Quinn’s line-up has yet to be announced (but we’ll keep you in the loop)

Another one will be Phoebe Robinson’s debut special (done solo from Jessica Williams and 2 Dope Queens).

Lastly, Aida Rodriguez will have her very first hour special where she will get to put her brand of unfiltered, calls-it-like-she-sees-it comedy on its biggest stage yet.

This trio of specials is a more than solid addition to their comedy programming slate over at HBO.

We are pondering about one small thing: are there going to be those hybrid comedy specials done over at HBO and HBO will just use HBO Max for more conventional stand-up specials? We’ll just have to wait and see at this point.

Phobe Robinson to Launch Her Own Imprint, Tiny Reparations Books, at Plume

July 8, 2020
News
phoebe robinson, plume, tiny reparations

(via Deadline)

The publisher Plume is taking their partnership with comedian/one of the 2 Dope Queens, Phoebe Robinson a few steps up. Robinson had her book You Can’t Touch My Hair published there and, announced today, will be having her own imprint at Plume that she’s calling Tiny Reparations Books. With that imprint at her disposal, she’ll utilize to give an opportunity for more diverse voices in both fiction and non-fiction.

This launch of Tiny Reparations Books perhaps comes at an opportune time as Robinson has live dates she lined-up in a few months, some of which are in LA, but no live show is really set in stone these days given the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic in the U.S. and the continued non-existence of a vaccine.

In any case, whatever Phoebe has planned for Tiny Reparations Books ought to be something to really watch for, especially since you’re probably doing plenty of reading of BIPOC books already.

Phoebe Robinson Getting Her Own Interview Series at Comedy Central

Comedy Central is really making a push for something in an interview format. Anthony Jeselnik already has Good Talk coming up at the network and now, Comedy Central has just ordered another show that will feature a comedian interviewing guests one-on-one, this time the comedian will be Phoebe Robinson, one of the 2 Dope Queens.

Obviously, Robinson will have a much different take, approach, feel, tone to her show than Jeselnik’s, which makes us wonder what Comedy Central’s ultimate game plan is here between these shows (and maybe even more?).

It’s hard to say now, but we’re excited to see what sort of delightful panache Robinson will bring in interviewing people here.

HBO Orders Up Four “2 Dope Queens” Specials

Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson’s hit podcast 2 Dope Queens will indeed be getting four hour long specials at HBO.

While a few podcasts have been adapted for TV, we’re pretty sure no other podcast has gotten a TV special, much less four of them.

The format of the specials has been detailed yet, but you be assured that Williams and Robinson have plenty of canvas to work with over the course of four specials.

Look for these 2 Dope Queens specials to premiere next year on HBO.

Seriously, we know that there’s plenty of great music there (Chance The Rapper, Future Islands, Lorde, etc.), but you’d probably regret it if you didn’t catch the comedy too.
