Please Watch and Enjoy’s Alex Falcone Debut Late Night Set on Colbert

July 23, 2021
News
alex falcone, late night, stand up comedy, stephen colbert

Last night’s Colbert was one for the comedians. Not only did previously featured comedian Hannah Einbinder take to doing panel for the first time, but Alex Falcone notched his very first late night stand-up set.

Falcone’s set was the sort of perfectly observed material that Alex has clearly honed into the perfect degree of tightness for a late night TV set. Also, the world ought to get a great laugh and a very important lesson from his take on “the friend zone”.

We have no doubt that Alex will probably be doing plenty more late night sets/stand-up on TV in general.

So, without further adieu, enjoy his Alex Falcone’s debut set on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert here

Please Enjoy Rojo Perez’s Set on The Tonight Show

June 28, 2021
News
late night, rojo perez, stand up comedy, tonight show

Just performed last week, Rojo fabulously continued the pretty robust featuring of stand-up comedy on Fallon.

In fact, that might be the part of The Tonight Show these days, especially since they feature comedians, seemingly, on a weekly basis where no other late night show (as Conan has come to a close) does so.

Perez had a tight set on what he has been through this time, showing that it is neither too soon to talk about something so sensitive to anybody and that a well-worn topic like the pandemic can still be territory for jokes and stories. Also, kudos to him really taking on quite the dashing look in this set (more so than any other look on a late night set in recent memory).

With that said, please enjoy Rojo’s set here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 65: Robby Hoffman & Knowing Thyself

June 23, 2021
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
colbert, conan, late night, peabody awards, robby hoffman, ted lasso, ziwe

If you’ve come to a point of being so in tune with who you really are, as Robby Hoffman has, you might have fared well, personally and otherwise, during lockdown. Hoffman is so masterfully herself whether on stage or in the writers room or in her personal life that taking on the pandemic was akin to taking care of business.

Hoffman joins TCB’s Jake Kroeger for an exploration of Robby’s seemingly unflappable nature and the myriad of things she has been juggling this whole time from her call-in show on Planet Scum to her project Rivkah at Showtime. Also, “hot” takes on Ziwe getting renewed, Peabody Awards going to Colbert and Ted Lasso, and the final week of Conan.

Note/correction: Andrew Yang answered “Times Square” to Ziwe asking his favorite metro stop in NYC and Robby found that so very funny.

Please Enjoy Graham Kay’s Latest Late Night Set on The Tonight Show

June 22, 2021
News
fallon, graham kay, late night, stand up, tonight show

As we come towards the other side of the pandemic, there are, unmistakably, things that haven’t changed one bit. While that’s alarming in some regards (i.e. people living life as if nothing happened in the last year and a half), there are many things that we’re glad to see weather lockdown intact.

Graham Kay and his comedy stylings are very much still sharp and on point as we remember them. Kay put them on display for his second late night set in his career (the first one was on Colbert), appearing on The Tonight Show last night. He even pulled one of his go-to stories, which he came up with years before the pandemic, but still made it sound fresh. That is truly a feat, especially while on camera for late night.

With all of that said, please enjoy Graham’s Tonight Show set here.

Pick of the Day: Your Late Night Show Tonight with Harvey Guillen 6/18

May 20, 2021
News
harvey guillen, late night, rushtix

OK, so here’s the situation. Season 3 of What We Do in the Shadows is in production, but the premiere date for said season 3 is still a ways away. As such, you won’t get to see Harvey Guillen reprise his beloved role as a quietly seething, conflicted familiar for the vampires of Staten Island, Guillermo.

However, you can catch Harvey be himself as a talk show host on the ever-changing, ever-evolving late night show, Your Late Night Show Tonight, that changes formats with every new host that they get each month. Guillen along with a choice writing staff and a crack production team that has done any sort of late night show  imaginable for years (including one that involved the apocalypse happening in “hosting the show” “from a bunker”).

Your Late Night Show Tonight with Harvey Guillen will go live, via RushTix, on Fri. Jun. 18th at 7PM PT/10PM ET. Tickets are only $15 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Please Enjoy Emmy Blotnick Espouse the True Joys of Weighted Blankets on The Tonight Show

April 20, 2021
News
emmy blotnick, late night, stand up, tonight show, weighted blanket

As things are supposedly reopening for the umpteenth time, there does seem to be, at least partially, a sense that we can pick up right where we left off long, long ago at the beginning of 2020.

There is world beyond the pandemic (even though it’s still not over) and, in regards to doing stand-up comedy on late night, which is probably as topical as stand-up comedy gets on linear television without your very own show, there is room to talk about things like weighted blankets.

(Also, if you’re worried about people not talking about “what’s going on”, trust that there will be more than plenty of comedy about COVID-19, white supremacy, etc. that will be written and performed for several years to come.)

Case in point: Emmy Blotnick‘s absolutely terrific latest late night appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon wherein she details the marvelous virtues of owning a weighted blanket. It’s among one of the funniest sets of stand-up sets we’ve seen in awhile and it’s almost like you could have seen this in Jan. 2020 just like you’re watching it now in Apr. 2021 and it’s just as sharply funny in both times and places.

That’s a testament how damn funny Emmy is. With that said, enjoy Emmy Blotnick on The Tonight Show here.

You’re Watching James Adomian’s Brilliance as My Pillow’s Mike Lindell on Kimmel, Right?

April 16, 2021
News
james adomian, jimmy kimmel live, late night, mike lindell, my pillow

For so long, late night was relegated to MacGyver-ing its shows due to the pandemic, having to do interviews over Zoom and doing their take on a lack of audience on top of dealing with America and the world being more in crisis than it has been in a very long time. There were a lot of growing pains and even as they figured it out as the months wore on, it just wasn’t the same late night irreverence that the whole time slot is meant for.

Honestly, the tonal and format issues were a bit of a problem even before the pandemic, but part of that did have to do with a notable lack of the comedic brilliance of one, James Adomian. Noted for his characters, impressions, his own stand-up, and a litany of treasured podcasting (please revisit The Underculture), Adomian has, in our opinion, not gotten his due even though he was Bernie Sanders opposite Anthony Atamanuik’s Trump and is the voice of so much of your favorite animated series.

Thankfully, Jimmy Kimmel Live tapped Adomian to play My Pillow founder Mike Lindell as Lindell has really seemed to become more unhinged and wild as of late, even more so than his desperately earnest My Pillow ads. Adomian has been doing an impression of Lindell for years and it’s truly a blessing that it’s now getting put to good use with one of the best late night bits in however long it has been since March 2020.

Let’s hope this means we get more of Adomian anywhere and everywhere (maybe give him his own sketch show already?).

Enjoy Adomian as Lindell on Kimmel in his two appearances on Jimmy Kimmel Live here and here.

Pick of the Day: Your Late Night Show Tonight Jackie Kashian 4/16

April 1, 2021
News
jackie kashian, late night, rushtix

If you’ve been in and around these parts at The Comedy Bureau, you really ought to know that Jackie Kashian is one of our all-time, hands down, absolute favorite comedians. Really, we highly, highly recommend getting into all her hours of comedy wherever you can get into them, her podcasts The Dork Forest and The Jackie and Laurie Show if you haven’t obsessively done so already.

Truly, anything that Jackie does (even a cameo on the latest episode of Bob’s Burgers) is something you definitely should check out.

That includes her taking over Your Late Night Show Tonight on April 16th where she will get to do her very own version of a talk show, which she not only deserves, but the prospect of which is so exciting. Again, Jackie is so damn funny to us that we’d love to see what that very sharply honed, pointed, hysterical sense of humor would do with a fully produced talk show.

Also, she’ll have an amazing team of writers including Carmen Morales, Wynter Spears, Stacy Rumaker, Virginia Jones, and Chelsea Pope as well as a very special guest in the one and only Margaret Cho. So, mark off Fri. Apr. 16th for this special live-stream, presented by RushTix.

Your Late Night Show Tonight with Jackie Kashian is set to go live on Fri. Apr. 16th at 9PM PT/12AM ET (stream will be available for 48 hours after show). Tickets are $15 and you can and very much should go get them here.

Please Enjoy Mary Beth Barone Doing Stand Up in Studio on The Tonight Show

News
jimmy fallon, late night, mary beth barone, stand up comedy, tonight show

Over the last few weeks, the tides of late night have shifted towards doing in studio tapings again (though that’s not all of them quite yet).

For Fallon and The Tonight Show gang, there have been back in Studio 6B in 30 Rock and have just started featuring live stand-up on their stage once more (as opposed to being done remotely on a ferry or in some other club in a different state or an outdoor show). They recently had Mike Vecchione as the first comedian to perform yards away from Jimmy and, last night, Mary Beth Barone delivered a terrific set that very much feels like a throwback to pre-pandemic times (hearing other people laugh not through Zoom and the like), yet is so wryly and cleverly of the moment.

Please enjoy Mary Beth’s set here.

One of TCB’s favorite LA comedy staples Megan Koester joins TCB’s Jake Kroeger for this week’s Field Report. Koester is beloved for her subversive, meta, rebellious rants and bits on stage and her extensive pieces of writing all over the Internet found anywhere from VICE to The Guardian.

Megan has been quarantining properly here in LA and walks us through how working eBay has kept her going during this time while stuck inside. Also, she is the perfect person for actually hot takes on The Golden Globes and Seth Meyers hosting Late Night through 2025 (as well as what she would do with her own late night show) and makes this one of the most fun, rollicking episodes in the tenure of the podcast.

Watch Desus & Mero’s Return for Season 3 for Free

February 1, 2021
News
desus and mero, desus nice, late night, showtime, the kid mero

While hiatuses are normal for late night shows, even without a pandemic, the length of a given absence feels like years because there are so many colossal events happening in the world on top of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The renewed vitality that Desus & Mero specifically bring to late night as they are so radically different from everyone else in button downs and suits compounds that feeling. Thankfully, that time is over and the Bodega Boys are back at it for their third season, going over the news in the delightfully rambunctious way that ultimately brought them to Showtime.

Their third season just kicked off yesterday and, as they have pretty much been since their days at VICE, it’s a rollicking breath of fresh air. Courtesy of Showtime, you can see for yourself for FREE as their very first episode of this season with special guest Stacey Abrams is streaming on YouTube here.

Merging of Late Night and Sketch Comedy Emmy Categories Sparks Ire and a Joint Letter

January 27, 2021
News
controversy, emmys, late night, sketch comedy

(via Deadline)

Comedy already comes up with the short straw during awards season and it looks like it’s going to get more unfair with the Emmys, as of this year, combining the nominees in late night comedy and sketch comedy together rather than have their own separate categories as was the rule for so long.

Networks and showrunners are set to submit a letter to the Academy of TV Arts & Sciences to reverse the change for the upcoming Primetime Emmys.

It might seem like a niche issue, especially during a pandemic, but, again, the squeezing of recognition for comedy at a major awards is worrisome in the long run. Also, for those who aren’t aware, late night may have sketches here and there, but it’s definitely its own realm that is decidedly different in tone, pacing, and format to any sort of sketch comedy series. Would you really pit Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Late Night with Seth Meyers against A Black Lady Sketch Show I Think You Should Leave or Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun?

If you would, then we’d kindly ask you to think about the potential notoriety and opportunity that could come for writers/showrunners/the shows themselves from having separate awards for late night and sketch and how much that could do for pushing comedy forward. Very seriously, how is there supposed to be room for great newcomers in late night like Desus & Mero if the field is dominated by perennial favorites like Colbert and SNL?

Reportedly, this controversy might even lead to a boycott of the Emmys (if they have to be done over Zoom again or in some sort of weird pre-taped, socially distanced way, would very likely be more exciting than the ceremony itself).

This year’s Primetime Emmys are usually held in September, so there is time for this to change and we’ll definitely keep you in the loop if that happens.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 42: Mike Bridenstine & Rediscovering Comedy Panel

On the week of the 100th episode of his delightful podcast, Hunk, Mike Bridenstine recounts the long winding journey to that 100 eps. mark as well as how the pandemic inspired him to change his podcast format for the better, specifically by adding a panel discussion by comedian (a facet of comedy that needs reinvigorating in America). Of course, this discussion with TCB’s Jake Kroeger leads to several different, but deep, winding tributaries on the state and philosophy of comedy way. They cover the whole gamut of comedy’s past and very likely and not so distant future, especially in regards to stand-up comedy.

Also, “hot” takes on the new Sex & The City reboot and late night stand-up being done on a ferry.

Watch Jena Friedman Dissect One of Her Fantastic Conan Sets on “The Set Up”

October 22, 2020
News
conan, jena friedman, late night, stand up comedy

Team Coco’s exclusive series, The Set Up, that gives a never-before-seen in-depth look into what goes into putting a late night stand-up set has its latest episode featuring one of our all time favorites and a comedian particularly mastered at dark comedy, Jena Friedman.

Friedman and Conan booker J.P. Buck go over a marvelous set Jena had on Conan years back where she specifically focused on the topic of America’s obsession with true crime. Per usual with Jena, she attacked the premise at all angles and planted punchlines at every twist and turn, while continuing to nail the topic the whole time (a rarity in late night sets). Jena details the amount of work, even up to the last second, and risks she took for the set, which hopefully makes you appreciate how effortless it all seems when it was taped on Conan.

Stand-up comedy, as you might now from following/reading us, is quite the particular art form. Within that form, a comedian’s set on a late night talk show is an even more particular part of the art form that is so painstakingly crafted as it’s often a comedian’s intro to the world and it has to accomplish showing who one is as a comedian in a very small amount of time.

Yet, many a great comedian pulls such a feat off.

To further show how detailed the process is with a late night set, Conan has started a series The Set Up where longtime, beloved booker JP Buck chats with some of his favorite comedians and his favorite performances of his on Conan. There are already two episodes featuring the brilliance of Daniel Sloss and Beth Stelling that you ought to give a watch to here and here respectively.

Amber Ruffin and Larry Wilmore Are Getting Their Own Weekly Late Night Shows on Peacock

August 11, 2020
News
amber ruffin, amber ruffin show, Larry wilmore, late night, peacock

As part of Peacock’s programming announcement yesterday, Peacock will expand on NBC’s late night offerings of Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon with another duo, exclusively for their streaming service, Peacock.

Amber Ruffin, one of the Internet’s favorite parts of Late Night with Seth Meyers, is getting her very own weekly late night show, giving her take on the news with The Amber Ruffin Show. Also, Larry Wilmore will get to take top billing as a host once again (after his tenure at The Nightly Show at Comedy Central ended in 2016) and have his yet-to-be-titled show focus more on conversation about pressing topics with high profile guests (i.e. the most intriguing part of The Nightly Show). This move by Peacock does make late night a little more diverse with two less slots occupied by cis-straight-white-men.

The pairing of Wilmore and Ruffin for the late night offerings at Peacock might be a good call. Both late night series are set to premiere in September and will undoubtedly be thrown immediately into late night’s mandatory coverage of the 2020 Election. We can’t wait to see what they’ll be bringing to the late night table that will set them apart.

Jimmy Kimmel Live Was All in Honor of Fred Willard Last Night

The passing of Fred Willard happened only a few days ago and his absence is still reverberating through the millions and millions of people he brought joy and laughter to.

Certainly, Jimmy Kimmel felt the loss deeply as Willard was a dear friend and a very, very frequent bit player on Jimmy Kimmel Live. So, last night, Kimmel dedicated the entire episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live to the memory of comedy legend Fred Willard.  Kimmel himself personally honored him by recounting some of his favorite memories in working with Fred as well as running down a plethora of characters that he has played for Jimmy over the years.

Watch, reminisce, enjoy (and maybe get a little teary eyed) here.

Late Night’s Back (Sort of)

News

Though Conan O’Brien, Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel, Trevor Noah, and Jimmy Fallon have all being doing various bits from the comfort of their own homes for the last couple of weeks, it would seem that the lion’s share of late night talk/panel shows are returning starting tomorrow.

Already, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee did an entire episode on TBS from the woods of Sam Bee’s home with their aid of her husband Jason Jones and her kids, complete with remote segments and remote interviews. Last Week Tonight just aired an episode shot from Oliver’s house, but it seemed to maintain the tone, energy, vibe, and even look of the original show.

Through very clever set-ups that will feature perhaps the smallest crews (maybe 1 or 2 people max?) and monologue jokes and bits written and submitted remotely from writers that are maintaining sheltering at home and social distancing, the likes of Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Late Night with Seth Meyers, Desus & Mero, and A Little Late with Lilly Singh will return tonight at their regularly scheduled times.

We’ll really get to see how far the quality of a video shot on mobile devices and via video conferencing will really go on broadcast TV, but, no matter what happens, any shred of normalcy is more than welcome right now. Thus far, many of the bits from Conan along with the monologues from Colbert, Kimmel, and Meyers maintain a lot of the integrity from a typical episode of their show, just without a fancy set and professional grade broadcast quality cameras.

All things considered, this might be a quietly historic night of television in establishing a hopefully temporary new normal for the first wave of TV shows to return to air/production.

If we had to take a guess, the future late night in general will very likely be done more remotely and venture outside of the studio or involve video conferencing/live streaming way more than they have in the past when all is said and done with staying indoors.

From where we’re looking, it might seem like there’s a nice little wave of late night stand-up debuts this month. Last week, Hannah Einbinder dazzled on Colbert. This week, Marlena Rodriguez graces the stage of A Little Late with Lilly Singh for her very own late night network TV debut (and we sincerely hope more are coming over the next couple of weeks)

Rodriguez blends bits of sobering honesty with undeniable silliness, which she especially commits during act outs. It’s a very satisfying mix of the dark and the light that Marlena has perfected over the years.

So, please enjoy Marlena’s comedic stylings with this very set from last night’s A Little Late with Lilly Singh.

If you wonder how unstoppable Desus Nice and The Kid Mero are when it comes to riffing, you should know that, in addition to riffing their way through their own Showtime show and their podcast, The Bodega Boys, they warm-up the crowd themselves on their own show.

Almost 100% of the time, a stand-up comedian that isn’t definitely not the host of the show does some combo of explaining the rules, doing some stand-up, and some crowd work to the audience in attendance in order to bring the energy of the room to higher, cohesive point.

Yet, Desus & Mero can do that all by their damn selves. Thankfully, Showtime has put all of that online, for your convenience, on the Desus & Mero YouTube channel. Dig in and enjoy.

We’ve actually got to see Einbinder develop her style over the last few years and it’s quite the treat to see the fruits of her labor be this set on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

For years, we’ve been saying be on the look out for Einbinder, but now The Late Show is doing it too (and for good reason). So, please, please, please enjoy Einbinder’s network TV debut with this set.
