abc, burbank, cheap, cnn, comedy news, comedy shows, culver city, david cross, downtown, echo park, free, goodnight burbank, hollywood, katt williams, live, long beach, los angeles, naskwrimo, national sketch writing month, open mic, patton oswalt, santa monica, ucb, what to do, wisepix

1) Whatever you think of Katt Williams and his comedy, he deserves a round of applause for standing by his material and what he said on stage in this interview on CNN. [via Laughspin]

2) Patton Oswalt’s Finest Hour is upon us next week (as long as you get Showtime).

3) National Sketch Writing Month is a real thing that’s happening RIGHT NOW. [Via Splitsider]

7) As the Joan Rivers episode of Louie expired on Hulu, I edited and expanded The Comedian’s Guide to Feeling Better About Making It In Comedy and posted it on Laughspin. Read both and you probably won’t care about one which one makes you feel better (even if you don’t do comedy).

7) Read how Jeff MacKinnon is having all the fun in Edinburgh at the Fringe Festival in his 12th and 13th parts of coverage for Laughspin.

8) Splitsider makes a solid list of podcasts that should exist. We could go on about adding more, but our first thought was that Joe Wengert should have a podcast called “Before Therapy”.

9) Mainstream comedy success? More like… I have no fucking idea what a large cross section of America wants in their comedy.

1) MTV’s scripted horror-comedy series Death Valley premieres tonight and definitely shows some promise and a welcome spin on the “emo-monster genre” that has dominated entertainment over the last 5 years. Let’s give it a chance and watch (10:30PM MTV).

2) Our favorites from Channel 101 that will be moving on to next month:
Intimate Indiscretions

Sex Teenagers

Parent Project

We’re also sad that Everything had to come to an end.

3) Our good friends over at RE:COM Magazine have come out with their latest issue, which we have indeed posted about, but needs to be heard about more in any way possible.  It’s really that great and insightful and full of articles about the cutting edge of comedy and yes, we have a piece in there too. Buy one or download a digital copy.

4) Well, that’s just wonderful.

5) “Women” “Pound It”.

6) The Laughter Against the Machine Tour with W. Kamau Bell, Janine Brito, and Nato Green only has 11 days left to reach their Kickstarter goal. If you don’t have money to donate, you can always tell others that do.

7) Laughspin posted a list of the 11 of the funniest stories told by comedians today and while it’s a solid list, we feel the likes of Sean Patton, Kumail Nanjiani, Margot Leitman, Pete Holmes, Moshe Kasher, Marc Maron, and Giulia Rozzi were left out. Also, who could forget the Paul F. Tompkins legendary story about meeting the smallest man in the world Michu on his album Impersonal.

1) Bill Burr on Letterman.

2) If you follow everything that I write, I spend quite a bit of time defending what comedians say, even if I think it’s hack, bigoted, etc., but somehow has made other people laugh. However, this latest case of an audience member telling a story of date-raping a girl at the show ASSSSCAT during the Del Close Marathon in NY is something that I can’t and won’t intellectually defend even if he was somehow kidding and made the whole thing up. From all accounts, people were cringing, verbally booing, and more in an attempt to get him to stop, which really breaks the main rule that I stand behind, which is “no matter what you talk about, you have to be funny.” Get the full story from Halle Kiefer at Splitsider.

3) On a much lighter note, the line-up for the comedy portion of the FYF Fest, which comprises about .5% of the festival, is FINALLY HERE. Emo Phillips, Marc Maron, and the Sklar Brothers are just a few names…

4) We didn’t even realize that Deadspin had a Comedy Week until yesterday. There’s some fascinating stuff, namely, a tribute to Mitch Hedberg, and a feature on Sean Patton. Thanks to Luke Cunningham for pointing this out.

5) Judges at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival actually picked the Top 10 One-Liners from all the comedians and we think that Matt Kirshen got robbed.

6) The Compatish finds and actually plays The Bachelor: The Game.

7) So, Nikki Glaser has fan t-shirts… (Special thanks to Scott Bowser pictured below)

12) OK, I love this city dearly and inhabitants, often transplants, are resentful of LA not living up to their expectations. It’s an unfortunate circumstance for any metropolis this size and I sincerely wish anyone that whines about being guilted to live here because they felt they had to in order to accomplish something would go back to where they came from. Even with that in mind and making my peace with all the shortcomings of Los Angeles, freeway construction at 1AM at every fucking off-ramp and on-ramp causing bumper to bumper traffic can go fuck itself once we make that possible.

8) “Jumping the Shark” = “Going Harold & Kumar”-This is probably our most incendiary post to date at the Nerdist, but what’s more amazing than the grab bag of vicious comments is the fact that people actually stuck around after the credits of Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay.

8) Tommy Johnagin leaves a note lying around that Joe Zimmerman isn’t supposed to find… or is he?

2) There are AMAZING THINGS happening at the Nerdist Theater, affectionately known as NerdMelt, and if you want to be a part of such events/happenings, they’re looking for interns.

3) Co-Ed Magazine makes a list of “The 11 Most Relevant Stand-up Comedians”. Going off of their definition of relevant, “…having a connection with your audience,” it’s a decent list with Louis C.K., Aziz Ansari, Daniel Tosh, Donald Glover, Whitney Cummings, and more.  However, there are incredibly notable omissions: Doug Stanhope, Paul F. Tompkins, Chelsea Handler, Chris Hardwick, and Marc Maron.

4) Nerve.com lists five young comedians who should be movie stars. Yeah, we’d like to see Jamie Lee, Hannibal Buress, John Mulaney and Morgan Murphy in a bank heist movie.

2) On the final episode of Lopez Tonight, Auggie Smith will not be making a well deserved appearance.  Instead you can watch him at the Comedy Palace or if you insist on staying at home you can watch something else like the 2 slated episodes of Louie, one of which features Doug Stanhope (FX 10:30PM), Paul Scheer being on both Children’s Hospital and NTSF:SD:SUV (Adult Swim 12AM/12:15AM), and the Green Room with Paul Provenza featuring Richard Lewis, Kumail Nanjiani, and more (Showtime 11PM).

8) So, Brody Stevens/@allthingsbrody hasn’t had something tweeted or retweeted in his feed for almost an entire day, right around when this Laughspin article we wrote about Brody was posted.

1) Lopez Tonight will air it’s last episode on Thursday, which is incredibly unfortunate considering comedians like James Adomian and Brent Weinbach their late night TV debuts. Don’t miss an appearance tonight with David Koechner and tomorrow night in the final episode as Auggie Smith is scheduled to do a stand-up set (TBS 12AM).

2) Brody Stevens/@allthingsbrody was REALLY arrested outside of a Starbucks, but is now released. Whatever your opinion of Brody is, reading his Twitter feed is a must.

3) Hampton Yount is absolutely hilarious. No set up required here, just watch.

4) Steve Carell feels out what it would be like to be on Conan while being on Conan.

5) Reportedly, Bill Burr dropped in at Big Fish last night, a room known for people heckling you because he’s working on a set. If you’re a comedian in LA (or NY), think about that the next time you question why you’re wasting hours of your time waiting to go up at a room that you’re not a big fan of.
