Adult Swim Is Going Virtual For Another Festival

October 20, 2020
News
adult swim, adult swim festival, rick and morty

All in person festivals for 2020, of course, had been cancelled due to COVID-19, but some opted to do a virtual event. This Summer, Adult Swim opted to throw an entire virtual festival under the banner of Adult Swim Con with a limited run of live-streams that they’d normally do up big in person.

So, with mass gatherings still being a terrible idea, Adult Swim is going virtual for their annual Adult Swim Festival, which will be streamed live on YouTube, Fri. Nov. 13th & Sat. Nov. 14th. They’ve lined-up their usual, big time suspects with Rick and Morty, The Eric Andre Show, and Run The Jewels. Assuredly, there will be more that Adult Swim has up their sleeve, but we’ll just have to wait and see until next month.

More importantly, it would seem the time at which we can all go back to normal big time comedy and music and arts festivals is still a ways away.

Please Enjoy “A Gay Scene Written by a Straight Man”

In the ongoing quest for representation mattering on a widespread basis, Hollywood is incrementally doing its best to tell the stories of all marginalized groups. Unfortunately, that does mean that they will fall short of the mark sometimes, despite some good intentions.

Nicholas Scheppard, Jenson Titus, and George Aivaliotis show just one way that this happens with how straight man, who thinks they are very well acquainted with LGBTQIA+ culture would write a “gay scene” in what is likely a very heartfelt drama.

Please enjoy it here (and maybe think about all the times that has happened in actual high profile TV and movies).

If you’re going to travel by plane these days, a private jet would seem to be the way to go in terms of keeping yourself safe from COVID-19. Of course, not all of us can afford it, but for those who can, you really ought to live life about the world in quarantine to the fullest.

That’s what the spicy couple Juanita Carmelita and Peter do on a “special” private jet that they have all to themselve. The chemistry between the pair, played respectively by Dress Up Gang‘s Frankie Quinones and Donny Divanian, is pretty undeniable even if it’s potentially looks like it’s going to heat up too much, and, as such, so damn fun to bear witness to.

Enjoy their latest tryst here.

Tim Heidecker Announces and Releases Trailer for First Stand-Up Special “An Evening with Tim Heidcker”

October 15, 2020
News
800 pound gorilla, abso lutely, comedy special, stand up comedy, tim heidecker

Tim Heidecker is a comedian, but very rarely does stand-up. Tim is much more renowned for his ultra absurdist work under the banner of Tim & Eric and, most recently, a decidedly non-comedic music album “Oh We Drift Away” with beloved indie singer-songwriter Weyes Blood.

Whenever Tim does stand-up, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that he has something up his sleeve besides standing on stage with a mic and straight-on telling jokes. There’s a subtle, but very subversive angle that Tim plays with satirizing what a good deal of mainstream stand-up is. So, for this hour special, An Evening with Tim Heidecker, you’ll notice that Tim makes sure that things, on the surface, look extra conventional and then show off the “cracks in the veneer”. It’s a fine line to walk, but Tim does pull it off.

You can see all of this for yourself in this trailer for An Evening with Tim Heidecker, then you can see the full extent of Tim’s version of stand-up when it premieres on Oct. 23rd at 6PM PT/9PM ET on YouTube.

adam conover, ali macofsky, blair socci, Caleb Hearon, laci mosley, live comedy, steve hernandez

A line-up of Adam Conover, Ali Macofsky, Blair Socci, Caleb Hearon, Laci Mosley, and Steve Hernandez is so solid that they would be worth seeing in almost any setup.

Fortunately, we’re not just hipping you to another show on Zoom. This will be one of those, in times like these, one of those live, in person, outdoor shows that you might have started to hear about.

So, you just might want to catch them, live and in-person (socially distant and, again, outside, of course) this weekend at a just outside of a studio stage. To hammer the point home about being outside, it’s called Outdoor Comedy Night @ Sibling Studio in Atwater Village and they will have an early and a late show, 7:30PM & 9:30PM, for $28 a pop.

You can and should go get your tickets here and here respectively.

Please Get Kyle Ayers’ Great New Album “Happiness” That Was Recorded Outdoors Before Comedy Was Only Allowed Outdoors

October 14, 2020
News
blonde medicine, comedy album, kyle ayers, stand up

Few comedians tempt and tango with chaos quite like Kyle Ayers. Whether it’s having comedians write what they think a scene from a particular movie is without ever having seen it or subjecting himself to the elements and chaos of the world by taping an entire comedy album in the back patio of one of LA’s most hip and lively neighborhoods, Kyle thrives in rolling with whatever’s happening in the moment. That’s the true magic of watching comedy live and getting to share that one-time-only experience as someone shifts flawless between their material and a random skateboarder showing up, then making a dramatic exit.

All of that spirit is captured on Ayers’ new album Happiness, which was wonderfully recorded on what would normally be an evening of Good Heroin, Stories Books & Cafe’s surefire Saturday night stand-up show that happens on their outdoor back patio. We’ll note again that this was recorded outside, well before lockdown and most live stand-up wouldn’t dare attempt to be done outside. Again, Kyle thrives in it.

Ayers has plenty of silly, self-deprecating, clever, and whip-smart material that is derived from the more absurd parts of his life. Of course, there’s plenty of it that he invites into his life especially when it comes to the nearly 20 minute epic tale about the stingiest home decor seller on Craigslist. The beauty of the performance here is that nearly everything that was recorded is seemingly left in and you get that fly-on-the-wall feel that is so rare in comedy albums and specials. There is even a pretty fun exchange with his producer about what to do about a clock tower ringing at the top of the hour that would likely get cut from most other albums. Then again, it’s the keeping of that sort of thing that makes you feel like you’re there.

Ayers’ Happiness is coming out this Friday, Oct. 16th, fresh off the presses from Blonde Medicine. Please, please, please go pre-order/get and enjoy Happiness here.

The COVID-19 pandemic upended comedy with its arrival and its furthering duration has forced comedy folks to further adapt to a world that’s as unsure as it has ever been. Accomplished comedian and writer Matt Kirshen shares, with TCB’s Jake Kroeger, his journey in quarantine that has led him from his last big writing gig, The Jim Jefferies Show, and doing stand-up all over the world to only doing in-person gigs such as drive-in shows, or performing behind the glass barriers of the Original Room at The Comedy Store just a handful of times (all while keeping his science-ish podcast Probably Science going at a time where science is being constantly called into question). Also, they get into “hot” takes on Nate Bargatze doing the first late night set in all of quarantine and Coming 2 America foregoing a theatrical release for one on Amazon.

Pick of the Day: A Drink with the Idler | Stewart Lee and Tom Hodgkinson

News
stewart lee, the idler

In the pantheon of UK comedy, Stewart Lee has been and remains one of our all time favorites. His expertly wry sense of humor and knack for weaving metatextually in and out of bits is something we’ll simultaneously marvel and bust up laughing at.

Lee will be having a chat with the UK’s The Idler about comedy and, well, of course, the world at large and how one is going to figure in the other in the future. Hearing Lee’s take on everything that’s going on right now is something we definitely want to hear and that you might want to catch as well.

We’ll all get a chance to do so later this month on Thurs. Oct. 29th at 11AM PT/2PM ET/7PM BST. Tickets are free for this live-stream and you can (and very much should) go get them here.

Dream Corp LLC Season 3 Reveals Sneak Peek

October 13, 2020
News
adult swim, dream corp llc, mark proksch, nick rutherford, season 3

Outside of The Midnight Gospel, Dream Corp LLC is one of the trippiest comedies that has ever been created. That’s saying a lot considering a good deal of it is live action. The shenanigans of Dr. Roberts and co. are and have been mind-bending and so damn funny over their two seasons on Adult Swim.

Needless to say, a break from reality is one of the most valuable things while in quarantine with a nightmare bumbling on as POTUS. Season 3 of Dream Corp LLC is definitely going to serve up plenty of absurdity as a respite for whatever you’re specifically going through.

Get a taste of what that will be like with this sneak peek here, then look for the premiere of season 3 on Sun. Oct. 25th at 12:30AM, right after The Eric Andre Show.

Please ‘Calm’ Yourself to Natasha Krause and Caitlin Linden’s “Guided Meditation” Specifically for These Times

To even take the time here to remind you that the world is a crazy place is frankly a redundant waste of time. Coping with the insanity that we are all beset with everyday is what’s important (so we can handle whatever other insanity inevitably lies ahead) and one of the better, more reliable ways to do that is guided meditation.

Of course, guided meditation has had to switch itself up a little during the pandemic and the worldwide cultural reckoning and might be a little different than what you might now or have heard of. Still, it’s worth spending some time to calm yourself with Natasha Krause and Caitlin Linden‘s very special guided meditation designed specifically for these times.

Nate Bargatze Just Did the First Late Night Stand-Up Set During the COVID-19 Pandemic Last Week

October 12, 2020
News
comedy history, nate bargatze, tonight show

Since lockdown started, late night talk shows have been holding on any which they could to keep going, though they have had to experiment with every facet of their format to do so. Not being able to have guests in studio with them or even being in studio has hindered a lot of what late night used to be, especially when it comes to featuring stand-up comedy.

Stand-up comedy, as it was traditionally done, especially on late night is one of the last things that will get to return to “normal” if that even is in the cards post-pandemic. Still, that doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen again or that it can’t be reimagined or done differently to keep the art form, and its performers that are bound to it, going.

Just this past week, the delightful Nate Bargatze got to perform stand-up on The Tonight Show, the first set in all of late night since March before everything shut down. Bargatze was in another venue altogether and not even anywhere near NYC, back in studio where Fallon was broadcasting from. Bargatze was in Huntsville, Alabama at Stand-Up Live with a limited capacity, socially distanced audience.

Not much is seen of the crowd in the set, but this does seem a far cry from that unfortunate set by D.L. Hughley at Zanies Nashville where he fainted on set. This set up isn’t too dissimilar from how Jimmy Kimmel Live was featuring stand-up by taping sets in Vegas at Kimmel’s comedy club before COVID-19 (maybe he’ll do that again?)

Nate doesn’t miss a step with his signature cool, calm, collected observations about the minutia of life right now, which is more impressive with a deadly virus still holding its grasp firmly on the world’s population. As far as a first late night stand-up set during this pandemic to set a tone, a benchmark, it’s pretty damn good. It underscores the importance of comedy in processing tragedy and horror in not only giving catharsis to folks on collectively shared tension, but connecting us on such common ground at a time that we’ve all been as divided and isolated as we’ve ever been.

Please enjoy Nate’s latest set on The Tonight Show and the first stand-up set on a late night talk show since the pandemic started in America here

Joey Clift Highlights 25 Native American Comedians for Indigenous Peoples’ Day

October 12, 2020
News
illuminative, indigenous peoples day, joey clift

Joey Clift has not only dedicated his life to doing some of the most insane, imaginative bits and concepts on stage (ranging from an entire talk show about cats to finishing Sufjan Stevens’ States project to taking a bamboo stick to the back), but as a proud member of the Cowlitz tribe, Clift has pushed for visibility and representation for native and indigenous talent in comedy and elsewhere. Over the last several months, the importance of BIPOC representation has finally come to the forefront and it’s crucial to keep that going.

For years, he has put up a big showcase highlighting native and indigenous talent at UCB as well as upping their visibility and representation through his own lovely comedy career (see this short film).

This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, Clift got to handpick a list of 25 Native American and indigenous performers for Illuminative that gives a bigger, deserved spotlight to the likes of Brian Bahe (Tohono O’odham Nation/Hopi/Navajo), Kaitlyn Jeffers (Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate (Dakota)), Monique Moreau (Cree/Saulteaux), Jana Schmieding (Cheyenne River Lakota Sioux Tribe), Lucas Brown Eyes (Oglala Lakota), and many more.

So, please go check the full list here and check out all of their work.

Enjoy James Austin Johnson’s Take on Trump’s Absurd Call to Fox Business About Dealing with COVID-19

October 9, 2020
News

James Austin Johnson‘s Trump impression has been one of the best around and is starting to get more and more notoriety as such, especially with JAJ’s understanding how Trump gets lost in doing non-sequiturs and tangents while attempting to speak extemporaneously. The experimental drugs that Trump is currently on due to testing positive for COVID-19 seem to having speak even more insane than he usually does, allowing for JAJ to really get off the rails with his impression.

Earlier this week, Trump called into Fox Business to speak with Maria Bartiromo and went off about he didn’t feel contagious. JAJ made a more enjoyable (potentially less terrifying?) take on it. Please enjoy it here.

The 2021 Spirit Awards Is Calling for Entries

October 9, 2020
News
call for entries, film independent, spirit awards

The Spirit Awards attempt to represent the best of the indie side of film and, for the first time starting in 2021, “the indie side” of television. As such, comedy tends to get more of a fair shake than it does with the Oscars and, it’s clear that some of the best television in recent years has come under the umbrella of comedy.

Also, given the closure of movie theaters, many a movie, whether indie or not, has had to opt to release via a streaming service, which might very well open the berth of consideration for films a little wider than it has in the past (most big time film awards require entries to have screened at a brick-and-mortar movie theater for an entire week). It would seem that the requirements suggest that’s the case for both film and television as well.

So, if you’ve got an indie film or brand new TV series that got put on a streaming platform where people had to pay to watch it, you might have a shot at getting nominated for Spirit Award  (also, the submission fees for the Oct. 13th early deadline start at $300 for Film Independent Members and $350 that aren’t).

Get more info and submit to the 2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards here.

Pick of the Day: 25th Annual State of the Industry Address with Andy Kindler 10/10

October 9, 2020
News
andy kindler, jfl montreal, just for laughs, state of the industry

For decades, one of the indisputable highlights of the Just For Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival has been Andy Kindler’s annual State of the Industry Address wherein Kindler roasts the entire comedy industry-at-large. He’s very much one of the best at satirizing comedy itself, especially when it comes to its organization and structures and it’s essentially a new album/special from Kindler that we can expect each year.

Since JFL Montreal opted to do a paired down virtual edition for 2020 due to the pandemic, we’ll still get the legendary irreverence of Kindler, though it will be done via a live-stream. We have no doubt that Kindler will bring that up in his address. In fact, this year’s State of the Industry Address ought to be something special as comedy has changed more than it ever has in recent memory in the matter of a few months.

Best of all, it’ll be free to tune in and you don’t actually have to go to Montreal, get an overpriced hotel, and try and figure which one of several different festival passes will actually get you into watching Kindler do what he does best.

Alive from home! Andy Kindler’s 25th Annual State of the Industry Speech: finally, i’m alone is set to stream on Sat. Oct. 10th at 3PM PT/6PM ET right here.

As film and TV production gets prolonged and paused and shut down, the quest for more content has led to unveiling and releasing of things that the general public would never get to see like unaired pilots, even if they were actually funny enough to warrant the public getting to see it and potentially pushing for more of it to be made.

Hampton Yount made one such pilot for SYFY called Man of Truth that put Yount position to investigate the most ridiculous conspiracy theories, but taking them as serious as any of the real ones like COINTELPRO or the Military Industrial Complex. The topic he deep dives into for the pilot if celebrity time travelers and his quest to get a hold of Matthew McConaughey is so worth a series green light by itself.

Watch The Forty-Year-Old Version Trailer, Get Charmed By It, Then Watch It on Netflix Tomorrow

News
forty year old version, netflix, radha blank

If you haven’t caught wind of her or the movie yet, NYC multi-hyphenate Radha Blank seems set to make quite the feature film debut as writer/director/star with The Forty-Year-Old Version that drops on Netflix tomorrow. It had a very nice run on the festival circuit back at a time when film festivals didn’t have to figure out whether to do all their screenings online or risk doing a limited capacity, socially distanced, masked affair. Now, it’ll have as wide as a release as a feature can have right now via Netflix.

The film follows a once-promising playwright who gets a mind to capture glory once more by venturing out as a rapper at 40, all shot in gorgeous black and white. The trailer itself is very, very promising (an unfortunate rarity in comedy movie trailers these days) with this comedic redemption story and should make you want to block out time tomorrow (or late, late tonight when it starts streaming) to watch The Forty-Year-Old Version as soon as you can.

Take a look for yourself here, then set a reminder for this Fri. 10/9 when The Forty-Year-Old Version is officially on Netflix.
