“Earwolf announced ‘Project Tippy-Toe’ where we asked for comedy podcasters to send us applications for a ‘super secret Earwolf project’. We were inundated with podcasts; over 120 to be exact – and we listened to all of them. Needless to say, it took a long fucking time; emphasis on the ‘fucking’.

After we sifted through the silt and the shit (silt being the good ones), we found the ten best podcasts to compete in the challenge. Matt Besser graciously agreed to be the host of the show, and we flew the ten competitors to Los Angeles and put them up in a local mansion.* Thus is where we begin the show.”

You do know that means that the rights to Transformers 6, 7, 8, all the way up to Transformers 10 are probably locked down by Michael Bay?  Thanks to everyone who watches shiny things shoved down your throat because it’s been marketed to you every second of your waking life, we’ll be watching 2 hour music videos on the big screen for years to come. Yes, I graduated from film school and am still somewhat pretentious and have most likely forgotten what childhood was like, but I’m OK with that.

1) Jay Leno’s joke about Casey Anthony didn’t go well until he repeated it the 2nd time. The joke, in structure and delivery, was typical Leno monologue, but dark by his standards, especially given how little time has passed since the Anthony acquittal.  Perhaps, it would have gone better if Gilbert Gottfried had told it.

2) We concur with Witstream: Stop suckin’ Favstar’s dick.

3) Tired of reading the Papaya King Billboard on Hollywood Blvd.? Think you have something better, more clever, utilizing obscure references?  Well, now’s your chance… Submit your idea for a Papaya King billboard and it may be posted in the LA area.

1) Watch comedic brilliance by Jon Dore & Rory Scovel on Conan. Oh yeah, they might do the same thing at Meltdown Comics on August 11th.

2) Want to be on a “High School Talent Show”?

Hot House, which normally hosts a fantastic “secret” comedy show, is putting the 3rd Annual Hot House High School Talent Show.  Already, it’s half booked, but if you’re interested, the show is on Thurs. July 21st 8PM and they’re looking to book all types of variety/comedy/character acts of varying lengths – but – no stand up (unless it is part of a larger character piece).

The basic theme of the night is the show takes place in a High School Auditorium hosted by the Vice Principal of Affairs.  Talent must decide up front whether to play a Student or an Administrator. And all acts should be between thirty seconds to three minutes (five if there is a real need) And let us know the general concept beforehand.

Nothing is too small or too stupid.  Please email mariecolette24@gmail.com if interested.

3) So Café Muse, to those comedians that put up with its open mic or shows, is now gone.  No more comedy will take place within its walls despite it being next door to the Comedy Central Stages.  We’re frankly surprised that it lasted this long as every time we’ve been there something along the lines of a frustrated white kid in his late 20’s would ask anyone who was black to be his black friend 5 minutes over the light would happen.

4) Don’t follow @MitziShore.  It’s not her.  Besides, gaining favor with her and an audition to be passed at the Comedy Store is a whole lot harder than just getting a fake account of her to follow you on Twitter.

5) Compatish goes cup stacking…

6) Weird Al Yankovic writes/confesses lyrics for the Conan theme.

1) Last night, I went to the “scene” open mic in Portland at Suki’s and immediately thought, “Man, I wish I started comedy in Portland.”  Ironically enough, as I’m dropping in from LA, the entire Portland comedy scene, which apparently was in attendance, was saying good bye to one of their heroes Richard Bain, who is coming down to LA.  From the greenest-of-the-green-newbies to mainstays and respected figures in Portland comedy, everyone was there in support of Bain.

LA is so huge, just physically, and many comedians are so incredibly busy with their own act, sketch group that has to put a video out weekly, podcast that records whenever it gets a chance, show or two that they have to produce and promote, that the whole comedy scene in LA could never be in full attendance of anything.  Yet, seeing even more camaraderie in comedy than the pockets of it that exist in LA would not only intrinsically make for better comedy, but would further dispel that image that LA’s a soul sucking town.

So, yes, I’m saying that if you’re a comedian in LA, go see a show that you’re not on or go support another comedian without trying to get booked.

2) Congratulations to Nick Kroll on getting the Nick Show Kroll picked up and Peter Atencio being attached to the Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele Project all for Comedy Central.  Also, congrats to Comedy Central for making some solid picks for this season. [via Deadline]

9) It has come to the attention of the Comedy Bureau that two videos in particular on Osama Bin Laden’s death featuring the amazing Table of Galaxies (the hilarious duo of James Adomian and Whitest Kids U Know’s Trevor Moore) and Hasan Minhaj didn’t get nearly enough press (even though they’ve already been posted here) due to the political nature of the humor in them.  Interestingly enough, we have not vilified Bin Laden the same way we have Adolf Hitler.  Hitler is one of the “go to” references for evil incarnate and Bin Laden is far from that.  It’s not like when Indiana Jones met Hitler when there was no doubt that Indy is looking into the face of evil.  The annoucement of Osama Bin Laden’s death in the social networking age where “no stone goes unturned” and subsequently made fun of brought about jokes about the death of Osama Bin Laden explore the mythos behind Osama Bin Laden, even questioning whether he really died or not.  Watch the two videos below and think about it.

1) LA Comedy in Festivals x 2: Check out the LA Improv Comedy Festival and (comedy in) the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

2) Lastly on June 13th The Comedy Store is proudly co-presenting the screening of “Tony Clifton Live on the Sunset Strip” at The Egyptian theater. The Comedy Store will be giving away a number of tickets for this film so if you are interested in getting on the list email talent@thecomedystore.net with your name and the number of tickets you would like.

3) If you’ve never checked out Channel 101 in LA, here’s why, amongst several reasons, why you shouldn’t miss it; EVERYTHING.

Everything (Ep. 17) from dannyjelinek on Vimeo.

4) Punchline Magazine Review of Midnight in Paris (I/the Comedy Bureau wrote this).

5) Tips for the Open Mic Run? If you have any tips on open mics around the LA area that give around 5 min. of stage time and don’t charge an outrageous minimum to support the venue, please e-mail thecomedybureau@gmail.com

6) OK, as far as comedy flyers go, this is one of the best I’ve seen this year (anyone thinking about making a Five Guys spin off, don’t).  Also, go see Powerviolence (the show this flyer is for) on Sundays.  It’s unbridled fun.

7) Puddin’ “Enviroment”

8) Don’t bother with questioning.  Of course you would love a summer camp run by comedian Barry Rothbart. So, watch the trailer for Barry Rothbart’s new series Sunshine.

11) Apparently Louis CK dropped in at independent stand-up show, Frolic! and the Hollywood Improv last night while Seinfeld dropped in at the Comedy Store in Picadilly, a popular neighborhood in London. What do these two things have in common. I didn’t get to see them. Damn.

eliolsberg:

Nerdist Industries Presents:

When it comes to movies, there is bad-bad and good-fun-over-the-top bad. Join Eli Olsberg as he invites some comedians in celebrating the latter. Each comic brings in a movie of their choice and after watching a clip/trailer from all of them, the audience votes as to which one they watch and provide deep, insightful, Criterion-style commentary on it aka make fun of the movie.

Since the show is on the cusp of our Nation’s Birthday, the theme will be Patriotic Action Films! So will it be something with Chuck Norris? Navy SEALs? Red Dawn? Something else you’ve never head of? You decide!

This month’s guests:

Pete Holmes
Kumail Nanjiani
Rory Scovel

Saturday, June 25th @ 8pm, $10 w/a food truck and candy/soda available, just like you were at the movies, except this time the running commentary is welcome!

Tix here: http://www.meltcomics.com/webstore/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2&products_id=62

Please “Two Thumbs Way Down!!!” rip on Green Berets, easily one of John Wayne’s worst, that was actually arranged as a pro-government propaganda film supporting military action in Vietnam.

Also, this is another reason you shouldn’t miss events at the Nerdist Theater at the back room of Meltdown Comics.

Special thanks NEEDS to go out to Amaya Perea and Abbey Londer for saving the night.

In so many words, you need to go to the Comedy Garage tonight to feed the house party/comedy show hunger you know you have.
