Watch the likes of Jon Stewart doing stand-up from 1992 or Chris Rock from 1987 or Hicks from 1990 or Chappelle from 2000 or Bill Burr from 2004 or CK from 2003 or Hedberg from 1998.

Just For Laughs Launching YouTube Channel With Their Largely Never-Before-Seen Archives

(via Variety)

The Just For Laughs brand has been one for the biggest comedy festivals in the world for quite some time. In their tenure of their festivals, so many of the big names you know and love nowadays performed on what was likely the biggest stage they’ve ever performed comedy on up until that point.

So, JFL thought it might be prudent to share some of their archives with the rest of us.

Thus, 500 hours of clips will be uploaded to a YouTube channel that’s being created with the help of Maker Studios, much of which hasn’t ever been seen outside of the festival. Clips will include performances from Dave Chappelle, Bill Hicks, Bill Burr, Louis CK, Mitch Hedberg, Jon Stewart, Chris Rock, and way more.

When that starts, prepare for another thing to binge watch.

JFL’s ComedyPRO Names Amy Poehler Comedy Person of the Year

In case you’re not aware, in addition to starring in Parks and Recreation, Amy Poehler has her hand in producing another TV show, Broad City, started a production company with her brother that already sold a series, does her web series, Smart Girls at The Party, as well as the occasional ASSSSCAT. We’re sure we are forgetting something, but it’s a well deserved honors either way.

Just For Laughs’ ComedyPro also named Edgar Wright as Comedy Director of The Year, Mitch Hurwitz as Comedy Writer of the Year, and Nick Kroll Breakout Comedy Star of the Year.

That’s pretty good if you ask us.

Sean Patton-Tip of the Hat 6/23/11

June 24, 2011
Uncategorized
acme comedy, just for laughs, late night with jimmy fallon, sean patton

The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” this week to SEAN PATTON.

Yes, he’s killed it on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.

Yes, he was just at the Melbourne Comedy Festival and has been at the Just for Laughs Montreal Comedy Festival twice.

Yes, he’s gotten props from Bill Burr after a “monster set”.

AND

Yes, he was also on stage last week around 2 in the morning in front of empty seats and said, “There’s no other place I’d rather be.”  Patton was working on a few freshly written bits like a pro despite empty beer bottles outnumbering the people in the room.  Such dedication is why Sean, on the very next evening in front of an actual crowd, some of which came to see him, went to what Anthony Jeselnik refers to as “applause break city” for pretty much his whole set.

A Sean Patton joke, if you’ve never heard one, goes down a wonderfully winding and twisting road of bizarre, true life stories, brilliant metaphors, and hilariously visceral imagery that always has a payoff that’s more a perfect way to end a bit than the punchline that one waits for.  Often has it been said by audience members and comics alike about Patton when he’s on stage, that you’re in the hands of a master and no matter where he’s going with whatever bit he’s doing or how long it takes, he makes every moment feel worth it.

There are layers upon layers where it could seem like the simple “rule of 3” (i.e. There are three types of ____________) joke structure, but then Sean will go far past the “3” into something else fantastic and damn funny… like made up mysterious lands in a novella written with an ex-girlfriend that they’ll never get to go to.

Such a joke is something that you’ll be talking about days later, trying to remember everything he said because it was just so damn funny, and something you’ll want to share with your friends because you want to make them laugh.  Ultimately, you probably won’t remember a Sean Patton joke in its entirety because, most likely you weren’t on a stage that you didn’t need to be on in front of empty couches and chairs AND enjoying the hell out of it, wanting to be nowhere else.

His website: iamseanpatton.com
His twitter handle: @mrseanpatton

Follow those or check back here at the Comedy Bureau handily to find where he’ll be performing next.

Tony Sam-Tip of the Hat 6/11/11

June 12, 2011
Uncategorized
chicago, hahajk.com, just for laughs, la comedy scene, los angeles, persona, profile, tip of the hat

The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” this week to TONY SAM.

Any person involved in comedy that has respect for comedy as an art form will tell you, if you so ask, that one of the most important things for a comedian, or any artist really, is a unique “voice”.  There needs to be something distinguishing in the way a person is funny for them to be a truly great comedian.

The Puppy Calendar @ Comedy Carhole from Anthony Sam on Vimeo.

Tony Sam has “voice” in spades. One of the funniest people in the intensively competitive and crowded LA Comedy scene, Tony has managed to become of favorite of both audiences and comics with a brand of comedy that’s quirky, yet captivating. Through his stand-up, plethora of hysterical characters, and his actual physical voice, Sam leaves an indelible impression on anyone who sees and hears him perform.  Tony’s actual voice is so unique, drastically wandering up and down in frequency, that he makes some of the most unique characters such as Electroface and Reverend Boone Turde that are exceptionally hilarious and absolutely unforgettable.

The Reverend Boone Turde from Anthony Sam on Vimeo.

Tony’s most recent character, a Fun Police Officer, has been simply amazing, even though I’ve seen on five separate occasions.  He starts off, dressed as a police officer, walking in from off stage, “Well, well, well…. well, well, well, well, well…. WELL, WELL, well, well… Anybody know why I pulled this show over?  I clocked ya doing boring!”

Truly, Tony Sam is part a new surge in comedy that presents the art form of comedy and where it can possibly can go.  Whether as one of his incredibly original characters (he even has one where he’s a country singer with a shark for an arm), just himself doing stand-up, or in a sketch or improv, Tony is deftly and skillfully pushing the bounds of comedy while managing to have crowds rolling in laughter.

As a result, Tony not only frequently performs around LA at some of the city’s best show, but has his own stellar show, Persona!, a character based comedy show, which has gotten stellar reviews from Punchline Magazine as well as here at the Comedy Bureau.  Taking place every month, Sam has himself and several of LA’s best comedians and they only perform as characters, which has made for quite a hit amongst a sea of fantastic comedy line-ups every night in Los Angeles.

Sam is also the head editor and writer/contributor at HahaJK.com, which, in short, is news the way you would want to hear it.  Daily, Sam posts news stories that are based on real news, but are funny just the way you would really want.

As of this week, Tony will be performing at the prestigious Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Chicago this Tuesday and later this month he’ll be having his fantastic Persona! on June 30th at the Hollywood Improv Lab.  If that’s not enough for Tony for you, you can follow him on Twitter @toekneesam and check his website tonysam.com.  Really, any chance you get to catch Tony Sam and his many “voices” on stage should not be missed.

1) Finally!!! It’s Saturday Night and I Need a Laugh (and I’m in LA).  This is a recent piece I wrote about the perspective of most people in Los Angeles who have no idea that comedy exists outside of the Laugh Factory, Comedy Store, and the Hollywood Improv, what they should REALLY expect from aforementioned clubs on a given Saturday night, and what the alternative can be, which, in this case, was cult favoriteThe Tomorrow Show w/Ron Lynch.

2) Marc Maron Mugs and Jackie Kashian Trading Cards.  I’m suspicious of falling into the horrible vortex of consumerism, but you’re telling me that you won’t buy any of these?

3) Death Valley = Steve Agee + Zombies + San Fernando Valley = Possible redemption for MTV and its more recent series Skins.

1) If you did not catch wind of this yesterday, please read: Study: Family History of Alcoholism Raises Risk of One-Man Show.  I mean “…Risk of One-Man Show”.  Tell me you didn’t almost bust your head on the floor laughing at that one… because it’s true.

2) Garfunkel and Oates in LA Times.  Why wouldn’t you read this?

3) EVEN MORE UPDATES to the Montreal Just for Laughs Showcase Schedule because I love all of you (…I got nothing else, you know?)

4) So…. of course you can’t take a joke? Many of us saw Jon Daly’s funny take on the incarnation that Charles Bukowski would take were he “Frankensteined” with comedy legend Bill Cosby into Bill Cosby Bukowski.  Of course, poets, as some of them like remaining on a pedestal of intellectualism, which you can hide behind on stage (I should know as I’ve done plenty of spoken word before), cannot take a joke/don’t understand the art form of comedy.

5) OK, where would you celebrate the 100th day of the Comedy Bureau? Really, I’m not sure.  Suggestions? (i.e. where would all of you folks have a drink with me)

6) Tonight’s COMEDY CRAWL-clone yourself
The Good Luck Show @ Good Luck Bar 8PM FREE
Just for Laughs Showcase @ 3 of Clubs 8PM FREE
Patrick Keane @ Irvine Improv 8PM $20/2 item min.
Comedy Death Ray @ UCB Theatre 8:30PM $5 (stand-by only at 7PM)
Hamclown 3 @ Alexandria Hotel-The Mezz (2nd Floor) 8:30PM FREE
The Walsh Brothers Show @ UCB Theatre 11PM $5

7) OPEN MIC RUN-*updated*

8) Recently: there is much excitement for the State of the Union Address at 6PM, as some people intend to play a drinking game.  Here’s a speech you don’t have to fret/worry/feel like you have to sit through so you don’t feel uninformed: Steve Martin’s Mark Twain Prize Acceptance Speech

9) Anyone taking odds on what the most overdone Oscar joke premise will be?  I feel like this would be a money making venture.
