TCB Debriefing 11/2/23: Jon Glaser, Futurama, Joe Pera, Taylor Tomlinson, Dad Jokes?

November 2, 2023
News
after midnight, futurama, hulu, joe pera, jon glaser, soothing meditations for solitary dog, taylor tomlinson

1. Truly, Jon Glaser never ceases to amaze. Being able to make absurdist comedy bloom out of the minutia of “gear” or, inversely, finding the comedic minutia in being in witness protection, Glaser’s comedy stylings comes in the friction between finding emotional truths/vulnerability and sheer ridiculousness. His guided meditation album for “solitary dogs” is a perfect display of his work. Glaser inhabits and creates a very real world of making a “serious” 30 minute track to soothe a dog that, of course, comes apart at the seams (on top of it being a product “made for dogs” that will only be enjoyed by humans. It’s a more than welcome, hilarious departure from the actual, terrifying world that is soothing for, well, anyone or anything listening. Jon Glaser’s Soothing Meditations for the Solitary Dog is available now wherever you get your comedy albums, courtesy of Pretty Good Friends.

2. Hulu did the correct thing and shut up and gave Futurama their money for two more seasons.

3. Joe Pera talks with America from now to the end of whatever fruit is in season at the end of Spring 2024. Kindly go get tickets when you have a moment at joepera.com/shows.

4. Behold the late night coronation of Taylor Tomlinson, the host of After Midnight, and the late night tag team partner of Stephen Colbert and The Late Show.

5. We’ll leave you with this: Not to jump the gun here, but can we make a New Year’s Resolution for 2024 to make better dad jokes? Enough with cringeworthy wordplay.

Pick of the Day: Jon Glaser Album Release Party (in NYC) 11/2

October 13, 2023
News
album release, bell house, jon glaser, nyc comedy, pretty good friends

The coming of anything from Jon Glaser should be a moment for pause and planning to be present and ready for whatever that is. TV show, web series, podcast, IG livestream, etc. are all worth tuning into if Glaser is at the helm. Jon Glaser Loves Gear or Delocated should be proof enough alone for this sentiment.

So, the prospect of a forthcoming album from Glaser one of the most committed absurdist performers in comedy along with an accompanying album release show/party should cause a raise of an eyebrow and then buying of tickets.

Pretty Good Friends, the comedy record label co-founded by Eugene Mirman, is having an album release party for Glaser that’s also a “dog-centric evening of dog-themed humor” where there emphatic request to have no actual dogs in attendance.  Also, Mirman, Jo Firestone, Tami Sagher, Steve Cirbus, and Ali Farahnakian will be joining in the fun. Suffice it to say that it’ll be another unforgettable night where Glaser engages in the sublimely ridiculous (and then you’ll have an album of his to listen to afterwards!).

This very special Jon Glaser album release party is set for Thurs. Nov. 2nd at 7:30PM at Brooklyn’s Bell House with tickets going for $25.42 a pop.

Far be it from us to point out a live comedy show with just mostly men on the line-up on International Women’s Day and during Women’s History Month. That said, if the renowned and celebrated men on said line-up were donating their time to raise money for abortion access and reproductive rights via the Lizz Winstead (co-creator of The Daily Show) org  Abortion Access Front and had the fantastic Joyelle Nicole Johnson hosting the whole shin dig, that is a different story.

It’s actually the story of the upcoming comedy charity benefit event Bro V. Wade: Funny Dudes. Raising Cash. For Abortion set for Sun. May 22nd at The Bell House in Brooklyn at 7:30PM ET. The likes of David Cross, Dave Hill, Jon Glaser, John Fugelsang, Josh Gondelman, and Dean Obeidallah are billed and we wouldn’t be surprised if there were more special guests TBA.

FYI: Founded in 2015, Abortion Access Front is a team of comedians, writers and producers that uses humor to destigmatize abortion and expose the extremist anti-choice forces working to destroy access to reproductive rights in all 50 states.

Tickets are $40 and, if you’re in and around NYC, you need to get them here.

While the news cycle make the perception of time distorted where two years ago might seem like a long, long, long time ago (JGLG premiered Oct. 2016), Jon Glaser Loves Gear’s 2nd season is finally just around the corner.

The guide to “gear” show/meta comedy made our annual year end list and we couldn’t wait to see how Jon’s obsession with gadgetry takes a dark toll on his personal life would play out in a second season. From the looks of the trailer, it seems like season 2 will not disappoint.

With a season 2 premiere date of January 9th on TruTV, this might be the first great thing in comedy in 2019.

Over a score and a year ago, a sketch show called The Dana Carvey Show premiered in primetime on broadcast network television. The show itself boasts some of the most revered comedic minds today including Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Louis CK, Robert Smigel, Jon Glaser, and many more.

Somehow, they didn’t even last a couple of months, much less a full season.

Too Funny to Fail: The Life and Death of the Dana Carvey Show tells the story of how that came to be. This documentary started streaming on Hulu today.

Get a taste of how this whole ordeal went down with this trailer.

“Jon Glaser Loves Gear” Looks Pretty Damn Good in These Preview Clips

October 21, 2016
Uncategorized
jon glaser, jon glaser loves gear, preview, trutv

Jon Glaser Loves Gear is set to premiere next week on Wednesday, October 26th on TruTV. Leading up to now, the show has been shrouded in a bit of mystery, especially, for how layered it is.

Jon Glaser plays himself doing a show that reviews “gear” of all shapes and sizes and categories (bikes, tactical armor, socks, GoPro cameras, etc.). That’s one level of the show. Then, Jon also has to deal with the underlying universe in which the show operates. That includes a tense relationship with his wife, having an actress play his wife on his gear review show, having a somewhat sentient smart phone voiced by John Hodgman, etc. This kind of silly chaos is Glaser’s forte.

As all of these preview clips show, Glaser pulls this very meta premise off with flying colors and we think you should make a note now to watch the premiere Jon Glaser Loves Gear next week on October 26th.

Also, the theme song is extremely catchy and will undoubtedly get stuck in your head (in a good way).

His new show, Jon Glaser Loves Gear, plays up this low key silliness in the best way possible.

See for yourself in these promos.

Then, absolutely tune in to the premiere of Jon Glaser Loves Gear on Wednesday, October 26th at 10PM on TruTV.

It’s about time Jon Glaser was back on television.

Jon Glaser, of Delocated and Neon Joe Werewolf Hunter fame, has his latest show, Jon Glaser Loves Gear, coming next month on TruTV. A special sneak preview will air at 11PM on Tuesday, October 25th, then the actual premiere will be on Wednesday, October 26th at 10PM, all on TruTV.

Earlier this year, we reported on an enticing R-rated animated feature in the works called The Adventures of Drunky that follows a bet for the fate of the planet between God and The Devil and a drunk.

From top billing to cameos, the cast is stellar including Sam Rockwell, Steve Coogan, Jeffrey Tambor, Dave Attell, Tyler The Creator, Abby Elliott, John Leguizamo, Jon Glaser, Jay Pharoah, Noel Wells, and James Adomian.

Sounds pretty great, right?

Well, Augenblick Studios has the script done and the dialogue recorded, but need funds to finish animating the whole thing. Thus, an Indiegogo campaign was born.

So far, they’ve raised $27,331 at the time of this post out of their minimum $100K goal. That will get them through the next step of production, but they’re looking to raise $2 million to finish the entire movie. They have just over three weeks to reach their goal and have fabulous rewards at various donations levels including lunch with Jeffrey Tambor, a personal insult voicemail from Dave Attell, digital copy of the movie and more.

Here’s God, as voiced by Jeffrey Tambor, and director Aaron Augenblick filling you in on all the details.

You can (and should) donate here.

Watch the Premiere of “Neon Joe: Werewolf Hunter” Projected on a ‘Beaver Moon’ Within a YouTube Video Thanks to Adult Swim

Everything here is as exactly as you read in the headline, though we’re not exactly sure about the “beaver” part.

Adult Swim put the premiere of Jon Glaser’s Neon Joe: Werewolf Hunter on YouTube ahead of the premiere that’s less than two weeks away. However, to entice you to tune in on Mon. Dec. 7th at midnight to watch the actual, unaltered televised premiere, they have put this whole first episode with a caveat.

They “projected” it onto an image of a moon, which they’re calling a “beaver moon” because if you can watch stuff on a beaver moon, why wouldn’t you?

Still, you can watch the whole episode in its entirety for free, courtesy of the fine folks of Adult Swim. Maybe some of you prefer ‘beaver moon definition’ as opposed to HD?

We like where TruTV is going with this comedy thing.

Since they rebranded as a comedy network from playing Court TV a lot, TruTV has come a long way in, we think, the right direction. With Those Who Can’t from The Grawlix ready to come out next year, this latest announcement of their new series and pilot orders with people we think are really funny is even more exciting.

First off, Jamie Lee will be hosting 10 Things, a comedic countdown/breakdown of ‘out there’ topics. Then, Almost Genius will look into people that live up to the show’s title and will be hosted by April Richardson and Chris Fairbanks. On top of that, truOriginals: Inside Iconic Comedy will explore the story of the funniest films in the cinematic canon.

For pilots, they have Jon Glaser Loves Gear where the one and only Jon Glaser obsesses over outdoor gear and Naomi Ekperigin hosting Inside Caucasia where she dissects what white people like doing from the perspective of a black woman.

We can’t wait to see all of this soon.

Jon explains how this happened on this latest Tonight Show appearance, of course, dressed in a neon suit.

That’s exactly the outfit that Jon Glaser sported on The Tonight Show and he wasn’t afraid to verbalize his support either.

As celebrities seemingly live in higher level of the atmosphere than us regular folk, their expectations to smile are more demanding and much different than ours.

Right after the finale of Parks and Recreation aired last night, the entire cast as well as co-creator Mike Schur (and a special guest that came to “Jamm” things up) appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to relive all the memories.

Of course, the goodbye, perhaps the last time all of them will be in a room together went as memorable and as in the spirit-of-Parks-and-Rec as it could be.

There was a barely rehearsed song for Seth Meyers.

There were toasts from one cast member to another one picked from a hat.

There was even another song that was supposed to be a final rendetion of “Bye, Bye Li’l Sebastian”, but Jim O’Heir, Aubrey Plaza, and Jon Glaser had other plans.
