Pick of the Day: LET’S MAKE A POOP FEAT. TRIUMPH THE INSULT COMIC DOG (NYCF) 11/6

October 25, 2023
News
new york comedy, new york comedy festival, nyc, robert smigel, triumph the insult comic dog

Many things will endure in the collective memories of Gen-Xers and Millennial fans of Conan O’Brien and one of the most unforgettable of those things would be the Robert Smigel creation that is Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. A grandmaster of the man-on-the-street style of interview, Smigel’s dog puppet covered hand and his vaguely European gravel-y accent and some of the sickest burns and a constantly dropped cigar made an indelible impression in the world of late night and still lives on in laughs when remembering things like Triumph hanging with Star Wars fans or going to any political convention.

So, it shouldn’t go without saying that a very special New York Comedy Festival evening with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog lined up for Nov. 6th at 8PM at the Murmrr Theatre should be an immediate buy. Take care of that at $31.14 a pop here.

Robert Smigel Is EP’ing An Election Themed Puppet Special “Let’s Be Real” for Fox

Robert Smigel, the mind (and hand) behind Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, the legendary insult comic dog hand puppet, is going back to puppets for a special satirical election special over at Fox. Smigel is attached as EP for Let’s Be Real, which will seemingly feature Trump and Biden puppets as to slyly suggest their nature as puppets.

As far as we know, there won’t be any Triumph the Insult Comic Dog like there was in 2016 when Smigel used his hand and a copious amount of miniature cigars to follow the campaign trail for Clinton and Trump as well as the DNC and RNC for Triump’s Election Watch Special on Hulu. Thus far, with this teaser, Let’s Be Real seems to be a little reminiscent of No, You Shut Up! on Fusion that featured an all puppet panel that Paul F. Tompkins, in real human form, had to attempt to wrangle as they argued on either side of the political divide a few years ago.

Having all puppets is undoubtedly a safer route than going to an idiotic Trump rally where Trump encourages attendees to enjoy the event without any sort of face covering, but that probably limits the amount of man on the street bits that Smigel has done so expertly over decades with Triumph.

The general election is not too far away, whether you like that or not, and the premiere of this special is also not too far away either. Let’s Be Real will premiere on network television on Fox on Oct. 1st at 9PM ET/PT.

Over a score and a year ago, a sketch show called The Dana Carvey Show premiered in primetime on broadcast network television. The show itself boasts some of the most revered comedic minds today including Stephen Colbert, Steve Carell, Louis CK, Robert Smigel, Jon Glaser, and many more.

Somehow, they didn’t even last a couple of months, much less a full season.

Too Funny to Fail: The Life and Death of the Dana Carvey Show tells the story of how that came to be. This documentary started streaming on Hulu today.

Get a taste of how this whole ordeal went down with this trailer.

Few are better at causing puckish mischief with a puppet than Robert Smigel and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. All throughout this last election cycle, he made following the campaign trail a little more tolerable with his Hulu specials.

So, naturally, Triumph went by the Inauguration of Donald Trump as the 45th President of the United States and made this, as expected, amazing remote segment for last night’s Conan.

Well, it might be just perfect timing for a new election themed special from Robert Smigel and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog as the almost 64 million people that watched last night’s presidential debate are still trying to stop their head from spinning.

Triumph’s Election Watch 2016 just started streaming on Hulu over the weekend and not only focuses on Trump and Hillary, but Gary “Aleppo Moment” Johnson.

If you have a Hulu account (remember Hulu isn’t free at all anymore), you can watch it here.

There’s Bonus Footage/”Poop” from Triumph the Insult Comic Dog’s Recent Election Special

It turns out that Triumph’s Summer Election Special 2016 was so filled to the brim with material that there’s plenty of bonus footage or, as Triumph calls it, “bonus poop” involving the Westboro Baptists, Media Row,  a fake book signing, one more attempt to “help” Chris Christie, and more.

Fortunately, they’ve cut all of this together and made a special half hour so-called “Bonus Poop” available on Hulu.

Hulu Orders Another Triumph the Insult Comic Dog Election Special

(via Deadline)

We’re pretty confident this will outdo most other election coverage just like the first one did.

There’s not a lot to be happy about in this election. Even the onslaught of seemingly mandated comedy based off of the sad joke that the current presidential race is getting a little trying.

That being said, Robert Smigel with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog in hand was one of a few bright spots with the Hulu election special. Announced today, Smigel/Triumph will be doing another election special for the streaming service, which, from the looks of it, will probably be following Hillary Clinton vs. Donald Trump.

We’re sure that if they visit the GOP convention, whatever happens will be priceless.

This is the election coverage we both kind of need and deserve.

Thanks to Funny or Die and the existence of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog from the mind of Robert Smigel and the platform of Late Night with Conan O’Brien/Conan, there will be a comedy special covering the 2016 presidential race hosted by Triumph.

Let your mind run wild with how great and off-the-rails that will go.

The special will be called Triumph’s Election Special 2016 and will steam on Hulu starting next month.

We can only imagine what Smig– cough– Triumph has to say about his name being really close to Trump’s.

Since 2003, Night of Too Many Stars has raised millions of dollars for autism programs as well as putting on one heck of a show.

This year, they’ve got a Paul Rudd wheel, John Oliver committing a crime for charity, Chris Rock being a spokesperson to highest bidder, and appearances from Weird Al Yankovic, Abbi Jacobson & Ilana Glazer, Martin Short, Bill Burr, Steve Carell, Louis C.K., Maya Rudolph, Sarah Silverman, Jim Gaffigan, John Oliver, Larry David, and way more.

That’s all on top of The Simpsons prize we mentioned yesterday.

Variety recapped a pre-taped portion of all the craziness that went down.

There’s also a “friendly chat” with former Happy Gilmore co-stars Bob Barker  and Adam Sandler.

Executive producer of the event Robert Smigel details more of the evening festivities as well as the cause of autism programs in which it’s supporting while on The Daily Show earlier this week.

There will be a live telethon when this year’s Night of Too Many Stars airs in order to take donations for autism programs this Sun. Mar. 8th at 8PM on Comedy Central.

Having to appear on a multitude of shows to promote The Jack and Triumph Show, Triumph The Insult Comic Dog has to censor himself a little with his usual ribald burns that he’s gotten to do on Conan over the years.

However, when back on Conan, and it’s back to the old days as well as Conan making fun of Robert Smigel barely being able to handle a puppet.

In promotion of the upcoming Jack and Triumph Show on Adult Swim, Jack McBrayer, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, and Robert Smigel’s hair (Smigel is the hand and voice that makes up Triumph if you didn’t know) all made an appearance on The Tonight Show last night.

Triumph took every opportunity he could to work in a zinger even during a round of Catchphrase.

Our guess is that this is only a fraction of the fun trouble that Jack and Triumph get to on their own show.
