Please Enjoy Jamel Johnson’s Comedy Central Stand-up Featuring Set

May 19, 2022
News
comedy central, jamel johnson, stand up comedy

If you follow us and you somehow don’t know about Jamel Johnson, you seriously need to address that issue. Jamel has been killing it on every stage that we’ve seen him on with his charming frustrations with many of life’s smallest absurdities (as well as a few big ones too).

Jamel got handpicked to be part of the latest crop of Comedy Central’s digital stand-up series Comedy Central Stand-up Featuring and Jamel put up a ridiculously fun set from wire to wire. In fact, this performance, much like every other performance we’ve seen from Jamel, makes us wonder why he hasn’t been tapped to host some sort of lifestyle/culture show where he just gives his hot takes on everything under the sun.

Make your day better and watch Jamel’s set here.

Yet another touchstone LA comedy show returns on this side of the pandemic. Truly, we just had no idea who or what was going to survive when March 2020 came to pass. There was a point at which we, and so many others, legitimately thought that perhaps none of it would come back. We continue to thankful for the instances where some of our favorite things in comedy have survived and are making a big, big comeback.

One such thing is another one of the LA comedy scene’s longest running comedy shows, Blam! Blam! Blam!, the monthly institution at K-Town’s super cool R-Bar is making its first official show since lockdown happen right at the end of 2021. For years, we loved spending a late night on Tuesdays at 3331 W. 8th St. with Paul Danke at the helm and a beautiful mix, curated by DeMorge Brown, of stand-ups, characters, and the always mind-bending surprise from Davey Johnson.

This return of Blam! Blam! Blam! has all of its favorites including:

James Adomian
Lizzy Cooperman
James Fritz
Nana the Cat Lady
Kimberly Clark
Anna Seregina
Jamel Johnson
Daniel Webb
Tom Waits

Don’t miss out this Tues. Dec. 14th. Get there at 9PM PT if you want street parking to be slightly less difficult.

Sarah Squirm‘s epic, delightfully twisted short, The Sarah Vaccine, is getting it’s very own in-person night, which is perfect for all of us waiting for that booster shot.

Squirm will be “IN THE FLESH” as will a fantastic line-up of comedians and performers from every freaky little corner in LA. That’ll include Jamel Johnson, Natalie Palamides & Courtney Pauroso, music from Maylee Todd, and a Dynasty Handbag original video (and there might be more to come). This sure-to-be-never-forgotten evening will take place at Brain Dead Studios on Fairfax, which rose from the long smoldering ashes of Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theatre on Thurs. Sept. 23rd at 8PM PT.

Tickets are $14, all said and done, and you really best get them here.

Pick of the Day: Jamel Johnson & Megan Gailey (in LA) 9/10

News
comedy show, dynasty typewriter, jamel johnson, la comedy, megan gailey, stand up comedy

Both Jamel Johnson and Megan Gailey have been, time and time again, an uncompromising delight to watch the numerous times that we’ve seen them go up, both in and around LA and on Conan. Essentially, you will be charmed by them and they will hysterically not let up until that happens (in the best way possible, of course).

So, it’ll be quite a night at Dynasty Typewriter next month when Jamel and Megan co-headline. Sure, we’ve seen them on plenty of line-ups together, but never just as the main attractions as they will be on Fri. Sept. 10th at 8PM PT.

Do not miss this special co-headlining night at Dynasty Typewriter. Tickets are $20 right now and $25 on the day of. Best go get them ASAP right here.

Pick of the Day: Faded’s Drunk Spelling Bee 2/26

February 25, 2021
News
drunk spelling bee, faded comedy, jamel johnson, megan gailey

Watching adults trying to spell while wasted on the sauce is a pretty damn good time.

We got to catch such this hilariously inebriated phenomenon a couple of times before lockdown, but we haven’t been so lucky to catch it since last March.

Thankfully, the Faded Comedy gang is gearing up for such a thing on their Twitch channel this Friday. This first Faded Drunk Spelling Bee will, thus far, feature the likes of @objsucks, @nonprofitcomic, @megangailey, @DonovanStrain, @IfyNwadiwe, @nitzbluv, @sladkow, @DragonflyJonez, and more contestants who possibly will get in over their heads trying to use a skill that has very likely been used in years due to autocorrect.

The Faded Drunk Spelling Bee will stream live on Fri. Feb. 26th at 6PM PT/9PM ET at twitch.tv/fadedcomedyla. As always with Twitch live-streams, live-stream access is free, but donations are accepted.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 28: Jamel Johnson & The LA Outdoors

jamel johnson, outdoor comedy, second city, snl

Jamel Johnson was one of the first comedians to record a special in all of quarantine during this COVID-19 pandemic with the audience-less Friend or Foe. He’s also done a remote segment on Conan, kept up a basketball podcast going during the NBA Playoffs, and managed to do some of LA’s newly minted outdoor shows, which means he has maintained himself working as much as he can and being so damn funny while doing so. Jamel zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger to discuss all such things as well as SNL managing to have a live audience, Second City being on sale, things to think about in doing in-person shows during a pandemic and more.

Follow Jamel on IG @broccolihouse & Twitter @nonprofitcomic and listen to his podcasts Air Buds and Sorry We Love Football. Get and watch his special, Friend or Foe.

art critic, art criticism, blm, conan, jamel johnson, team coco

Jamel Johnson has been one of a handful of comedians that have found a way for to make comedy work for them under quarantine. Johnson, pretty much at the start of lockdown, recorded and released a great stand-up special without an audience.

Johnson continues to pull off bits and shenanigans, the latest being a bit for Team Coco.

While Johnson isn’t technically a professional art critic and is very clearly wearing a wig, him going around LA and giving his hot takes on various Black Lives Matters posters and “art” is worth him saying he is an art critic and all of us believing that is his real hair.

Please enjoy Johnson’s neighborhood BLM art tour here

The upcoming November election is not only a chance to get Trump out of the White House, but a chance to also change so many other elected offices for the better including at the municipal level.

Nithya Raman is running as one of the most progressive and forward-thinking candidates for Los Angeles City Council. She has a chance to unseat incumbent David Ryu for District 4 in LA and has laid out a comprehensive, thoughtful platform that speaks to the most critical issues for Angelenos and aims to actually take action.

So, there will be a big comedy live-stream fundraiser for Nithya presided by everyone’s favorite horror comedy troupe, Helltrap Nightmare. You better bet that there’s a marvelous line-up for the show that already has John Early, Kate Berlant, Demi Adejuyigbe, Mitra Jouhari, Joel Kim Booster, Jamel Johnson, Camirin Farmer, The Shrimp Boys, and Mood Killer.

Right now, you can (and very much should) RSVP here for admission to Helltrap Nightmare & DSA LA for Nithya Present: A Campaign Comedy Fundraiser for this Sat. Aug. 8th at 8PM PT/11PM ET. Also, you can support Nithya for the City directly here.

Pick of the Day: Aesthetical Relations 8/6

We were truly taken by Christina Catherine Martinez’s first foray into the IG Live space with her comedy/art talk/experimental comedy show Aesthetical Relations. We’re still taken by the audacity of the opening, which has us still ruminating on its audacity and how she cleverly pushed the boundaries of the aesthetics of the Gram (in addition to have all sorts of weird and wonderful treats with offbeat characters, high art/literary folks, and niche, but thoroughly satisfying bits).

So, we wouldn’t dare let ourselves go without specifically telling you about the very next Aesthetical Relations that Christina would be exhibiting, which just happens to be this Thursday, Aug. 6th at 7PM PT/10PM ET over @xtina_catherine on Instagram. Very, very special guests include the hysterical Jamel Johnson (who possibly made the first legit comedy special in quarantine), Dr. Angelo Castoria, and clowning/character sensation Courtney Pauroso.

Until that time, please enjoy Christina’s personal announcement for this edition of Aesthetical Relations.

Jamel Johnson’s New Special “Friend or Foe” Made Without an Audience Because of COVID-19 Pandemic

April 28, 2020
News
comedy special, friend or foe, jamel johnson, stand up

In addition to being one of the comedians that you should be watching as they make their ascension, Jamel Johnson is so self-realized in his comedic persona that we could truly hear him rant about anything for quite awhile.

That notion really got put to the test with Jamel’s brand new special Friend or Foe that, because of that damn pandemic we’re all living through, was made completely without an audience. Johnson did shoot this 1/2 hour special with a two-man crew and proper social distancing of course at one of LA’s most beloved indie venues, The Lyric Hyperion.

It will never not be strange to hear stand-up without a live audience laughing, but, for our money, Jamel’s passionate rants about the socio-political minutia of life are just so damn funny that they transcend a completely empty room.

Interestingly enough, Jamel’s special actually stands out from any other sort of special that was done with little to no audience. Drew Michael’s HBO special was set up to seem like he’s in his own head as he’s telling his own jokes along with some staged scripted scenes and Harland Williams’ Force of Nature was shot in the middle of a desert. Both were conceptual adventures in to what might happen at outer limits of stand-up comedy.

Johnson’s Friend or Foe, on the other hand, is a half-hour special that was made out of what the circumstances have afforded him. There isn’t really any tailoring of any of his material to the times or for the strange conditions in which the special was produced. Jamel is just standing alone delivering the his material out a sheer, undeniable need to. While defying the art form of comedy in so many ways, an unfazed Johnson rolling through his material with no audience (with the same sort of vigor he would normally have in the before times) somehow speaks to the tireless drive of being a stand-up comedian. The image of Jamel yelling about the small stuff in an empty room is, in of itself, a pretty great over-arching joke that, for us, had us busting up laughing the whole way through.

Jamel Johnson: Friend or Foe is out now on Vimeo for $5. Go get and enjoy it here already.

Jamel Johnson’s “I Think It’s Good” Is a Hot, Hilarious 21 Minutes of a Comedy Album EP

The crackling energy and attitude of Jamel Johnson starts from the very first second of this EP, I Think It’s Good.

As such, we were laughing, giggling, slapping our knee, and definitely cackling throughout the entirety of Jamel’s 21 minutes on this debut EP. Johnson can rant about the most innocuous minutia and make hysterical bits that feel so live and are very satisfying (as well as a fun morsel of sketch mischief tagged on the end).

Jamel Johnson’s I Think It’s Good comes out this Friday, Feb. 14th, fresh off the presses from AST Records.
