SF Sketchfest Announces Virtual “Festpocalypse” Fundraiser This Coming January

December 17, 2020
News

OK, so there won’t be an in-person SF Sketchfest come this January. You already knew that, right?
Just because that’s the case, doesn’t mean that SF Sketchfest, one of the world’s biggest comedy festivals, won’t forego doing anything. In fact, they’ve got something pretty big on deck, virtually of course, called Festpocalypse. It will be a special, massive one night only  event that will raise money to keep SF Sketchfest alive and well and going after all of the COVID-19 pandemic is finished.
How massive is it? Well, take a gander at who they have slated for Festpocalypse:
The Kids in the Hall, The State, Mr. Show’s David Cross & Bob Odenkirk, The Upright Citizens Brigade, Parv & Pudi with Parvesh Cheena and Danny Pudi, plus “Saturday Night Live” alumni Fred Armisen, Dana Carvey, Rachel Dratch, Janeane Garofalo, Tim Meadows, Laraine Newman, Sasheer Zamata and original writer Alan Zweibel. Sketch troupes Kasper Hauser, The Latino Comedy Project, White Women and Australia’s Netflix sensations Aunty Donna appear as well.
Festpocalypse also features top stand-up comics and writers including Brits Eddie Izzard and Noel Fielding, plus Margaret Cho, Jo Firestone, Ron Funches, Chris Gethard, Dave Hill, Joel Kim Booster, Bobcat Goldthwait, Emily V. Gordon, Dana Gould, Eugene Mirman, Arden Myrin, Aparna Nancherla, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Kevin Pollak, Greg Proops, Jonah Ray, Paul F. Tompkins, Reggie Watts and more. Also, live short film riffing with RiffTrax featuring “Mystery Science Theater 3000” alumni, fake Uptown Showdown debates, a visit with Triumph the Insult Comic Dog and “Weird Al” Yankovic, a game show hosted by Jimmy Pardo, movie games hosted by Doug Benson, swift justice from Judge John Hodgman and Bailiff Jesse Thorn, and a rare reunion of The Slipnutz members Andy Blitz, Jon Glaser and Brian Stack.
Film and television stars slated for appearances include Alan Arkin, Paget Brewster, Chris Elliott, Elliott Gould, Christopher Guest, Jon Hamm, John Michael Higgins, Michael Hitchcock, Bill Irwin, Jane Lynch, Oscar Nuñez, Andrea Savage, and Aisha Tyler, as well as The Tenderloins, creators of the hit show “Impractical Jokers.” Cult cinema aficionado and drag superstar Peaches Christ will take a look back at the festival’s past film celebrations.
The show also features improv by Groundlings alumni The Black Version, the esteemed Improvised Shakespeare Company and festival regulars Theme Park. Musical performances will include Bill Frisell, Jean Grae, Rhett Miller, The Milk Carton Kids, Eliza Skinner, Epic Lloyd, Jonathan Coulton, Paul and Storm, and John Roderick.

How will they fit that much show into one night? We’re not really sure, but you best clear out Sat. Jan. 30th so you can watch, enjoy, and support SF Sketchfest via Festpocalypse starting at 5PM PT/8PM ET so you can pack in all of what’s listed above (i.e. all the live comedy you could possibly want from SF Sketchfest from the comfort of your own quarantine).

Tickets start at $20, which is pretty swell price. If you can’t make it on Jan. 30th, you’ll be able to watch it through Feb. 1st. Go get your tickets at sfsketchfest.com right now.

Pick of the Day: Laughing All the Way to The White House 10/20

As you may well know, Wisconsin is a major swing state. As such, there are plenty of big fundraisers that are going towards making sure it swings left.

One of them, Laughing All the Way to the White House, will be one of the biggest comedy live-stream fundraisers that we’ve seen yet. Slated for this Tue. Oc.t 20th at 6PM PT/8PM CT/9PM ET, the live-stream will feature the likes of: Sarah Silverman, Sarah Cooper, Seth MacFarlane, Kumail Nanjiani, Mike Birbiglia, Hasan Minhaj, Lewis Black, Bassem Youssef, Chelsea Peretti, Whitney Cummings, Judd Apatow, Roy Wood Jr, Maria Bamford, Harry Shearer, Bradley Whitford, Sklar Brothers, Mandy Patinkin, Ahmed Ahmed, Cristela Alonzo, Greg Proops, Jackie Kashian, Will Forte, Ben Gleib, and more.

That’s a line-up worth catching in support of almost any cause. Taking Wisconsin back for the left just happens to be a really great cause to boot.

Access to the live-stream is available via donation. Do so here.

Pick of the Day: Operation Save Abortion 4/30

The far reaching effects of the COVID-19 pandemic go beyond just the virus spreading and the deaths it causes or even the terrifying economic disruption. For instance, access to independent abortion providers is getting shut down even though it’s an essential, crucial service. It’s heinous to do this sans pandemic, it’s particularly despicable to do during these times with the most devastating pandemic nearly anyone has lived through.

So, Lizz Winstead, the co-creator of The Daily Show, will be leading as the head of Abortion Access Front and hosting this Operation Save Abortion fundraiser to raise money for said independent abortion providers to stay open and operating in these dire times. It’ll be 12 hour live-stream on Instagram Live at the AAFs Instagram @abortionfront going from Thurs. Apr. 30th 7AM PT/10AM ET-7PM PT/10PM ET.

Slated for the fundraising live-stream event is a marvelous row of comedy folks including: Elizabeth Banks, W. Kamau Bell, Nikki Glaser, Jenny Slate, Sandra Bernhard, Margaret Cho, Beth Stelling, Dana Gould, Josh Gondelman, Samantha Irby, Shannon Woodward, Greg Proops (Whose Line Is It Anyway?), Jessica Kirson, Krystyna Hutchinson (co-host of the Guys We F’cked podcast), and Lindy West (Shrill).

That’s not even the whole line-up that already includes many of comedy’s finest, which should make for one damn fine marathon live-stream chock full of stand-up, stories, bits, and more (on top of supporting a very important cause that might have otherwise easily gotten swept under the radar of the COVID-19 news cycle).

FYI, you can support this cause during the live-stream or even before then at keepourclinics.org.

We would very much like to watch a reunion panel of TV show starring Greg Proops, Jon Dore, Baron Vaughn, and Gareth Reynolds.

Josh Androsky and Bryan Cook’s Reunited offers up something possibly better with bringing that line-up together for a faux TV series that they starred in without any of them knowing ahead of time what that fake TV show was.

Pretty great, right? Well, you can (and should) get your tickets for the show’s latest edition happening this Friday, January 7th here.

Seeso is really making up for all that lost time on NBC’s comedy slate over the last couple of years.

Just in its beta stage right now, you already know that Seeso has a lot to offer even though they’re just getting started.

Now, they’ve gotten an official launch date: Thurs. Jan. 7th.

In addition to their vast array of offerings, they’ll adding a bunch of original content including a show called Before the Morning After where comics like Greg Proops, Jena Friedman, and Alex Edelman will riff at a diner, the long awaited hour stand-up special from Rory Scovel, Matt Besser breaking ridiculous records on Besser Breaks the Record, live variety and stand-up shows The UCB Show and Live From The Barrel House, an animated comedy The Cyanide & Happiness Show, an Australian musical comedy series with puppets, Sammy J & Randy in Ricketts Lane, and a modern dating game show, Dave & Ethan: Lovemakers.

With other shows from Jonah Ray, Cameron Esposito & Rhea Butcher, Dan Harmon, Thomas Lennon/Robert Ben Garant/Kulap Vilaysack, and more also on the way, Seeso is making the $3.99/month subscription fee sound worth it.

Someone Who Writes at Jeopardy! Seems to Really Likes Comedy Podcasts

More and more answers seem to come from someone who not only listens to comedy podcasts, but thinks that they’re culturally relevant enough to be on Jeopardy.

In its 32nd season on the air, Jeopardy! stands an television landmark and the topics, of which they derive their answers from, have a certain distinction within history and pop culture.

Just in the past month, both the great comedy podcasts Superego, Greg Proops’ Smartest Man in the World, and Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast  have been mentioned as answers.

Jeopardy! mentioned @goSuperego! Amazing – well done! @MattGourley @PFTompkins @markmcconville @ShuntMcGuppin pic.twitter.com/9YwsxkiKg8

Thank u to all our fans for making #GGACP a success & a question on @Jeopardy RT & SUBSCRIBE https://t.co/AwsNK8H1ol pic.twitter.com/pz15fqpVVY

We don’t know how rigorous the vetting process for the writing the answers that contestants have to guess the right question for, but it’s obvious that podcasts are within the zeitgeist enough and potentially have enough staying power to make into the realm of the renowned trivia show in existence.

Also, whoever came up with those questions seems to have particularly good taste in podcasts as well.

UPDATE: the someone/whoever we’re referring to appears to be Jeopardy! writer Mark Gaberman.

Let us know if you see any other Jeopardy! answers that are comedy podcast related @thecomedybureau on Twitter and we’ll add it to this post

Both Jon Benjamin’s experimental jazz album, “Jazz Daredevil: Well, I Should Have*” where he doesn’t know how to play piano and attempts to play along side professional jazz musicians and Greg Proops’ latest stand-up album “In The Ball Park” both dropped today.

If anything, they should offer a great soundtrack to wade through the masses as your taking advantage of the leftovers of doorbuster deals today.

Whether it comes to wit, verve, his command of the English language, and his seemingly inexhaustable knowledge of the world, Greg Proops never lets up.

On his sixth record, In The Ball Park, Proops not only shows he can keep up with the changing times in comedy, but can thrive in it on his own terms. You’ll notice on this album, just like much of his discography, that Greg still shifts gears flawlessly between topics, ranging from gun control to white pants to baseball, jokes, jokes within jokes, etc. without needing to take a breath.

You can see what we’re saying when you listen to this track.

In The Ball Park comes out on this Fri. Nov. 27th, but you can and should pre-order it now on iTunes or on vinyl from AST Records.

However, even back then, a mix of some of the best comedians and innovative musicians and singers all came together under the roof of Largo to play.

In 2008, a concert film was released of the old Largo with the likes of Fred Armisen, Fiona Apple, Greg Behrendt, Paul F. 1) Last night, I went to the “scene” open mic in Portland at Suki’s and immediately thought, “Man, I wish I started comedy in Portland.”  Ironically enough, as I’m dropping in from LA, the entire Portland comedy scene, which apparently was in attendance, was saying good bye to one of their heroes Richard Bain, who is coming down to LA.  From the greenest-of-the-green-newbies to mainstays and respected figures in Portland comedy, everyone was there in support of Bain.

LA is so huge, just physically, and many comedians are so incredibly busy with their own act, sketch group that has to put a video out weekly, podcast that records whenever it gets a chance, show or two that they have to produce and promote, that the whole comedy scene in LA could never be in full attendance of anything.  Yet, seeing even more camaraderie in comedy than the pockets of it that exist in LA would not only intrinsically make for better comedy, but would further dispel that image that LA’s a soul sucking town.

So, yes, I’m saying that if you’re a comedian in LA, go see a show that you’re not on or go support another comedian without trying to get booked.

2) Congratulations to Nick Kroll on getting the Nick Show Kroll picked up and Peter Atencio being attached to the Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele Project all for Comedy Central.  Also, congrats to Comedy Central for making some solid picks for this season. [via Deadline]
