Morning Debriefing 7/19/11

1) Paul Scheer’s NTSF:SD:SUV was interviewed by AOL TV and there’s a preview available on iTunes!!! Don’t miss the premiere this Thurs. at 12:15AM!

2) Funny or Die and/or Earwolf-FOD and Earwolf join in partnership!

3) Humblebrag’s monthly power list is out on Grantland!

4) The Comic’s Comic pointed out yet another random joke stealing accusation today. Hey people excited to be whistleblowers only for the sake of being a whistleblower, realize that there are plenty of incredibly creative and imaginative people not just in comedy, but the entirety of the entertainment industry, and that the possibility of someone coming up with very similar to what someone else came up with is very likely.  In fact, it happens every single day.

If I had a nickel for every time I nearly had an aneurism when I read a log line for movie that just sold that’s basically what I’ve spend the better part of a year writing or hearing a similar joke that’s on an extremely esoteric topic to one that I have by a much more famous comedian than me, well, I would never ever work again.  There’s a reason several intellectual property cases get thrown out every year because they are baseless and more often than not, the accusers care less about what they’re creating and more about the end result of trying to get rich quick.

Our advice: Think very carefully before you throw around the label of a “joke thief” around because it’s very hard to get rid of even if has no foundation in fact.

5) Watch Current TV’s Erin Gibson and Bryan Safi’s hilarious take on the Bachmann’s take on homosexuality.

Michele and Marcus Bachmann on Homosexuality – watch more funny videos

6) Kurt Braunohler’s World Wide of Animals: Seahorses.  The funniest show about animal facts that did absolutely no fact checking whatsoever.

Kurt Braunohler’s World Wild of Animals: Seahorses – watch more funny videos

7) Amazing print comedy magazine RE:COM that’s distributed NATIONALLY is looking for photos from comedy happenings in the LA area. E-mail hi-res (300 dpi or better) pics to recomag@gmail.com if interested.

8) Maria Bamford interviewed in Midnight Poutine!

9) Connected Comedy interviews comedy booker Eric Yoder

10) Don’t know what photobombing is? Here’s an almost too perfect example from Ken Jeong in GQ (or from model Kate Upton depending on how you look at it)

11) Lighten up people, dark comedy is STILL comedy-a piece we wrote for Laughspin.com

12) Jesse Miller has a new client!!! (it’s his brother, Troy Miller, and he’s hard as hell with a Bo Staff)

17) Was asked if I was human last night because of constantly overloading my plate with work by somehow finishing it?  To be honest, I had a moment of doubt of whether I was indeed human or not.  Even at this moment, there is a twinge of uncertainty only dismissed by the fact that it’s almost 1PM when I posting the Morning Debriefing.

1) Jay Leno’s joke about Casey Anthony didn’t go well until he repeated it the 2nd time. The joke, in structure and delivery, was typical Leno monologue, but dark by his standards, especially given how little time has passed since the Anthony acquittal.  Perhaps, it would have gone better if Gilbert Gottfried had told it.

2) We concur with Witstream: Stop suckin’ Favstar’s dick.

3) Tired of reading the Papaya King Billboard on Hollywood Blvd.? Think you have something better, more clever, utilizing obscure references?  Well, now’s your chance… Submit your idea for a Papaya King billboard and it may be posted in the LA area.

1) Comedy Bureau favorite JAMES ADOMIAN will be on Lopez Tonight on TBS at MIDNIGHT. Watch live, set your DVR’s, OR check back here tomorrow as it will be posted.

2) Andrés Du Bouchet’s taping is tonight 10PM at Bar Lubitsch (7702 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood, CA). This is a perfect part to be a part of comedy history/catch his one-of-a-kind absurdist stand-up/laugh until it hurts and then finding a way to laugh some more.

3) Thai Rivera will be debuting his new self-titled album at the Ontario Improv (4555 Mills Circle, Ontario, CA) next Thurs. June 16th 8PM. Thai’s proof that grinding it out at open mics, no matter where they are or how they are, can, through tireless hard work pays off and does so on your own terms (i.e. headlining your own show to release your own CD).

4) Melissa Villasenor auditions at America’s Got Talent. She gives that show’s name validation. Seriously. I first saw her an indie, topic based, comedy show a year ago, and only a month or so ago, she got passed at the Comedy Store as a regular, and now, this.  Congratulations and hopefully she’ll leave Forever 21 soon.

9) It has come to the attention of the Comedy Bureau that two videos in particular on Osama Bin Laden’s death featuring the amazing Table of Galaxies (the hilarious duo of James Adomian and Whitest Kids U Know’s Trevor Moore) and Hasan Minhaj didn’t get nearly enough press (even though they’ve already been posted here) due to the political nature of the humor in them.  Interestingly enough, we have not vilified Bin Laden the same way we have Adolf Hitler.  Hitler is one of the “go to” references for evil incarnate and Bin Laden is far from that.  It’s not like when Indiana Jones met Hitler when there was no doubt that Indy is looking into the face of evil.  The annoucement of Osama Bin Laden’s death in the social networking age where “no stone goes unturned” and subsequently made fun of brought about jokes about the death of Osama Bin Laden explore the mythos behind Osama Bin Laden, even questioning whether he really died or not.  Watch the two videos below and think about it.

Death & New Life in LA’s Independent Comedy Scene

April 16, 2011
Uncategorized
cheap, comedy news, comedy shows, downtown, echo park, free, los angeles, new, west hollywood

As cheesy as it may sound, the circle of life does extend beyond the context of actual human life.  Where a hole exists in what’s hip/cool, there will undoubtedly be something to takes its place, which, in regards to LA’s vibrant and vast underground/independent comedy scene, translates to a show/room/venue ending and one or even a few more springing up elsewhere.

Silent Bob/Kevin Smith recently announced the closing of his live audience/podcasting venue Smodcastle before I had to chance to see anything there, tomorrow marks the end of my favorite shows Comedy Garage despite their long run, and Trick, one of the coolest shows in LA (the LA Times even wrote something about it) has been and remains, for all intensive purposes, shut down.

Yet, as tragic as the end of the Comedy Garage is (trust me, it’s one damn fine show as I wrote here), there are several new shows for all of LA to discover and enjoy with line-ups that rival those of arts and comedy festivals, mostly because many of the comics have been to or are going to a festival.

Namely, Brunch, which will be hosted by the wonderful Jamie Lee and Jake Weisman, will make its debut this Monday April 18th at the Park Restaurant in Echo Park 9PM, free of charge or any sort of food/drink minimum.  As it’s in Echo Park, this show is already automatically cool, right?

Performance Anxiety, a comedy show put together by TJ Miller (on movie screens and comedy club stages across America) and Eli Olsberg (The Morning After Podcast) inside of the famous sex toy and accessories shop, The Pleasure Chest, Tuesday April 26th 8PM, for $7.  The novelty of having a comedy show inside the Pleasure Chest should be enough to peak the interest of many, but the line-up itself (Rory Scovel, Ryan Stout, Morgan Murphy, Garfunkel & Oates, and more) is one not to miss.

Forget show; Loading Dock, a “comedy event” at the XRT Theatre, is also making its inaugural run on Tuesday April 26th featuring not only a spectacular round of comedians including Kyle Kinane and Eddie Pepitone, but it will also have art on display from local talents Brian McFadden & Natasha Bedu, as well as a petting zoo and a photo booth… FOR FREE!!!  You read that right: Comedy + Art + Petting Zoo = $0 Admission.  In addition to being put together by the minds of enterprising, talented, and up and coming comics Abbey Londer and Allen Strickland Williams, Loading Dock is also in the category of “do not miss or else…”.

Again, as sad it is to see Comedy Garage go right after a documentary about it had been made, plenty of other stuff has willingly stepped in.  Also, I’m sure, the Comedy Garage gang of Sean Green, Paul Danke, and Cornell Reid will put together else amazing very soon because comedy doesn’t die, it just moves to another part of town.
