The Comedy Morning Debriefing Discontinued

April 12, 2011
Uncategorized
comedy news, los angeles, morning debriefing

Due to additional responsibilities that we’ve overtaken at the Comedy Bureau, we are experimenting with dissolving the Morning Debriefing in separate posts throughout a given day.

There will still be frequent updates and posts everyday informing any and all about latest and best in comedy in the Greater Los Angeles Area and (sometimes) beyond.  They’ll just be separate posts separate from two static calendars listing all the best upcoming shows and open mics.

Also, there will be more time to write more original articles like the Tip of the Hat and show recaps as well as get into interviews and other brand new things via The Comedy Bureau including covering the upcoming Bridgetown Comedy Festival.

Thanks for to all for your support and readership and we’re only going to get better from here.

-Bureau Director Jake Kroeger

The Walsh Brothers-Tip of the Hat 4/7/11

boston, comedy news, disco, pranks, profile, tip of the hat, walsh brothers, zombie

The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” this week to THE WALSH BROTHERS.

Even though I’ve been to their monthly show at the UCB Theatre a few times, both Chris and David Walsh never cease to amaze in what they come up with, which was, this time around, having 4 bass players vs. 1 bass player, an amateur karate demonstration, and enough audience plants to almost have an Inception-esque sketch fooling even the plants themselves.

While most comedic duos take the tried and true formula of having one “straight man” and one crazy, unrelenting, uncompromising character to play against each other, the Walsh Brothers take a drastically different approach.   They both, as real-life brothers, mix degrees of honesty with being completely absurd/out-of-left-field/zombies-on-a-weekday-afternoon (an actual thing that they did and taped) and, as a result, are just really their crazy selves with little compromise.

Even in while recounting stories in tandem, which comprises most of their hysterical stand-up, they will frequently interrupt each other, call each other out at certain points, go from an act out to off on a tangent where Chris will just try to sit in an “improvised air chair” and fall over, and then go back into the story.  Every act of the Walsh Brothers show is something that’s thoroughly hilarious as it’s always ripe with rich detailed absurdity, amazing depth in character, and, of course, pranks, some of which they gloriously act out.

One of my favorites is called “Personal Disco” where they kill the lights and have themselves and extremely random assortment of characters dance around one person to heavy techno music.   Though pranking the audience walks a fine line of alienating audience members, the Walsh Brothers handle every interaction with the audience with care in such a way that no one really feels unsafe in the way that a performance art piece does that no one can quite understand.

Throughout the course of all this seemingly unbridled fun chaos, unknown to the audience, Chris and David have an amazing, in-the-moment, sense of what’s working and what’s not and if it’s not, how to go about cutting to the next story/sketch/character.  I’ve seen David dance for several minutes at the top of a show as it was getting big room laughs and then softly segue into the next bit as he sensed his marching wildly around the stage had run its course. They basically know how to show a crowd a damn fine show time and again.

Though once called the “Pride of Boston” (their hometown) at a show here in LA, the Comedy Bureau is extremely glad that they’re based here as they perform their fantastic and, as one audience member shouted to me about it later, “mind blowing” show at UCB once a month and frequently at stages throughout Los Angeles.  So please check their website or Facebook page or Twitter feed or even back here at the Comedy Bureau for details on their next show or perhaps when Chris Walsh is literally “brushing my shoulders” off since I looked concerned/depressed at a bar (this really happened to me last Tuesday).

8) Yesterday, the Comedy Bureau posted the article, “Why are THEY on the Show?” about the unfortunate trading of spots on shows that happens in LA and some readers were wondering a few things.  Specifically, The Comic’s Comic wondered about comics who struggle to get stage time starting their own room.  I have no problem with other comics starting their own room to get their own stage time if they can’t get it elsewhere.  Again, I reiterate stay away from trading spots.  Whether they are good or bad as comics is a matter of subjectivity to me really, but, as I point out in the article, if they can find an audience of their own, my opinion doesn’t really matter.  Another reader wondered that if a person works the Haha, Ice House, Comedy Store, Improv that they should get a shot at performing at another room.  First off, there are plenty of comics that are (and I’m putting this very politely) raw that get to perform at all of those clubs.  Once more, as I pointed in the article, plenty of comics can get laughs, but if they’re not funny to the booker, why should the booker put them up?  Last week, I saw someone do nothing but offensive material jumbling up the most controversial topics to date (i.e. Libya, Tsunami, and Liz Taylor’s Death) into one dick joke ridden mess and kill.  Did I laugh? I didn’t even smile.  Just because this comic happened to do good on a certain night because they had a good spot on the show, I don’t feel obligated or guilted to promote their comedy as, plain and simple, I don’t find them funny.  If you have any further questions regarding this article or anything else, please send them to thecomedybureau@gmail.com.

Why are THEY on the Show?

April 4, 2011
Uncategorized
bad comedy, comedy news, los angeles, trading spots, unfunny, up and coming, why?

Several months ago, I remember overhearing a visiting comedian say, “There’s so much bad comedy rampant in LA.”  Initially, I became defensive as there is a plethora of comedic talent within the City of Angels as frequently pointed out here at the Comedy Bureau, but, after a few seconds in flashing back through all of the many awful, horrid showcases that I happened to be dragged to, I understood what the visiting comedian was commenting on.

Pictured above is both a message (all pertinent information regarding all identities concerned has been redacted to protect the parties involved) that asks to trade stage time in one room for stage time in another and what is an unfortunate cancer on the comedy scene in LA.  Comedians and those constantly around comedy might not be surprised by this happening, but to the casual passer-by, it might shock them to find out that a certain show isn’t really the “Best Up and Coming Comedians” as advertised in their, most likely, grossly designed flyer.  Instead of the billed “killer comedy show”, there are spots booked on the show not because the particular comedian is funny, but rather because he/she runs another room.

Despite independent production taking place all over the world and various state sponsored incentives drawing entertainment ventures away from California, Los Angeles is still very much one of the main hubs of the entertainment industry.  As this is still the case, many comedians from all over the world have bought into the idea that LA is where they will make it, which is a notion that is reinforced every once in a while by someone getting a Comedy Central special that moved out here.

This mass migration of comedians to LA has brought about an overflow of many talented deserving people combined with an even bigger overflow of cutthroat, backstabbing, and, most importantly, unfunny people vying for stage time without the promise of any decent pay.  The unfortunate result is some comedians becoming desperate and jaded and resorting to unsavory measures to get ahead, which is, in this case, promoting a comedy show that has unfunny people in it, letting those unfunny people continue to be horribly unfunny.

Some reading this article might take offense as they are of the school of thought that says it’s common courtesy to book someone that has booked them.  Interestingly enough, in many much more tight knit comedy scenes in much smaller cities than LA, comedians that are starting out aren’t really allowed to talk to established comedians that regularly perform.  Until those newbies develop a little, they’re forced to become better in order to avoid the uncomfortable situation where many bookers/comics/booker-comic hybrids that they were “friends” with would have to tell them they’re not funny.  The result in this scenario: only funny people to get to perform in an environment where they’re supposed to be funny.  This way, the word “unfunny” never enters the equation.

The sheer size of Los Angeles allows for “trading spots”, as mentioned above, to run rampant.  Many audiences/comics/bookers have no idea of whose funny to them or not because they’re not willing to make the trek from wherever they live to wherever the show might be, which could amount to several hours of driving.  Unlike a tight-knit community where the word gets around quickly, many comedians based somewhere in LA can basically “fly under the radar” and get their spots by trading without too many people knowing immediately whether they’re good or not.

Now, I understand everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, who starts out in stand-up comedy sucks.  All comedians have bad habits, get nervous, panic, etc. because performing stand-up comedy is probably the most extreme version of public speaking, which is still one of the biggest natural fears of people everywhere. The impetus of live comedy is not only to keep a group of strangers engaged, but physically laughing for a period of time.  This is an incredibly unnatural act and developing a comedy act is a grotesquely painful process, which requires time to grow and mature.  This is why there are open mics, which are also grotesquely painful like they’re supposed to be.

I also understand there is great deal of subjectivity as to what is funny and a great deal of elitism can derive from this.  While the Comedy Bureau has been accused of being elitist (some go so far as to call us “haters”), I would say ask why would you want to promote something that you don’t think is funny?  Even if a certain comedian kills on a certain night, in a certain room, at a certain portion of the show where the crowd is really “warm”, if you don’t think it’s funny, why should you be guilted into changing your opinion?

My answer: You shouldn’t budge your opinion as long you’re well informed.  Don’t hate someone’s 10 minutes of dick jokes unless you have given it a fair chance.  It might be funny.  However, if it’s still not funny, I find little reason to promote their comedy just because they make a certain crowd laugh.  With that being said, if you, as a comedian, can get a crowd to laugh and begin to follow you, you don’t really need to worry about the opinion of others including the Comedy Bureau’s because those other people think you’re funny, which should be, again, as a comedian, one of your primary concerns.

“Trading spots” makes being funny to any number of people a moot point, which I don’t understand since, and this might be oversimplifying the whole issue, as comedy shows are supposed to be funny.

FYI: the comedian who sent the message pictured above did not get to swap rooms like they wanted.

1) The iCandy Open Mic in Long Beach taking place every Friday in Long Beach has put itself in a rare class of open mics running for almost a decade.  Not only do they now pay their few booked performers, but they will very soon offer to match any other indepently produced and booked room that is willing to do so.  Thanks to Shayne Michael, Jeff Leon, Kerry Arnold Stephens, and these 97 other people, comics getting paid at an open mic has become possible.

2) Antithesis Comedy, another fine comedy site, is looking for comedian/musicians and comedian/filmmakers based in LA.  Message Jesse Castro Jr. for details.

3) The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” this week to THE WALSH BROTHERS! Article/profile to follow soon

4) Always hilarious comedienne Jackie Kashian is correct in that there is stigma attached to the “solo show”, but I’m pretty sure we would all watch Jackie’s solo show.  The Comedy Bureau would.

Anything But a “Cartoon Dump”

March 27, 2011

adult swim, cartoon network, cartoon research, comedy central, comedy news, emo phillips, frank conniff, history, kyle kinane, los angeles, mystery science theater 3000, recaps, reviews, robot chicken, sketch, space ghost, tim and eric, write-ups

Almost a decade ago, an underground trend of “made-bad-on-purpose” cartoons started to rise. From Space Ghost: Coast to Coast all the way to Robot Chicken, Cartoon Network has almost developed a whole entire new vein of their brand based on said trend, Adult Swim.  Harkening back to very poorly produced cartoons of the sixties and seventies and even earlier then juxtapose clever and/or absurdist writing questioning the whole poorly defined cartoon universe has become popular to the point that it’s pretty much its own genre.

Yet, the original cartoons that are being referenced so frequently and tangentially are very close to being completely lost.  THANKFULLY, there is CARTOON DUMP, a live monthly show at the always amazing Steve Allen Theater in Los Feliz that continues this tradition of actually bad cartoons through actual screenings and live comedy sketches, stand up, and music.

If you’re curious as to how bad one of these “gems” are, consider one called “Captain Fathom”, which utilizes animation technology so lo-fi that pretty much only the mouths are “animated” as a real human mouth is superimposed over the animation.  This program might sound interesting in a kitschy/nostalgic/hip sort of a way, but the writing, voice talent, etc. are to a “paint-by-numbers” degree of complexity and they even managed to paint in the numbers in the wrong order.  The story supposedly pits Captain Fathom, whoseremotely piloting, maybe (it’s not really clear), a deep sea vessel against a similar looking, but different colored deep sea vessel.  Some lights flash across the screen and only through some faint grunts can the audience discern that there is a battle happening after which Captain Fathom apparently won.  Again, its unclear what has been accomplished by this as no motion by the characters has really taken place.  Another bad cartoon simply consisted of physical fitness tips, though, due to poor/lazy drawing and conceptual development, comes off as laughable when the butt of the fitness expert is highlighted by a halo while he’s bent over.

Written and created by Mystery Science Theater 3000’s very own Frank Conniff and co-produced by cartoon historian Jerry Beck since 2007, Cartoon Dump is a genius idea of show executed to perfection as the unintentionally terrible cartoons are legitimately painful to watch, then balanced out by the awesome mix of live sketches and stand up comedy from comedy heavy hitters such as Kyle Kinane whose been on featured on Comedy Central twice within the span of a month, and the legendary Emo Phillips (who by himself, telling only 5 jokes made the show completely worth the $10 price of admission).

As a straight stand up comedy show, that’s an already fantastic line-up that would sell out hundreds of seats.  Yet, Conniff dresses up as Moodsy the Clinically Depressed Owl who banters back and forth with co-host Compost Brite, comedian Erica Doering in a red leotard and a comically forced smile, do their own live version of a “bad cartoon”, of course, with the ultra clever, hysterical quips on pop culture/current events (something that Conniff is quite good at, especially @frankconniff) and their own misguided cartoon universe complete with an actual prop dumpster that foul mouthed puppets come out of and a scantily clad woman (Kristin Arrigo) a la Jessica Rabbit and make Cartoon Dump one of those shows that already have a loyal following, but should have an even bigger one.  Special guests Emo Phillips and Kyle Kinane did their own take on the Cartoon Dump by respectively playing theme songs to supposedly rejected bigoted cartoons and reading cartoon series pitches that are really a metaphor for Kyle’s misery.

In a city that’s full of stand up showcases that rival most festivals on a week night, Cartoon Dump is a refreshing, wildly original comedy variety show that will delight the high falutin’ “Tim and Eric” crowd as well as though who just want go out on the town and have a laugh.  Check out their Youtube Channel and Facebook page and/or merch page.

Cartoon Dump takes place on the 4th Monday of the month at the Steve Allen Theater 4773 Hollywood Blvd., Los Angeles, CA (Los Feliz).
