1. Every now and again, we’ve gotten to see comedians from their very inception of their career, cutting their teeth at whatever venue that they can possibly find to the storied, yet rarefied success and fame that one would hope for as a stand-up comedian, often reflected by their face and name being plastered on a giant billboard. We’re thrilled that Hannah Einbinder is one such person as we’ve bore witness to some of her earliest sets in the strangest places that had seeds of her undeniable comedic verve and prowess these days on display at a gorgeous El Rey Theatre. Her very first comedy special, HBO’s latest comedy release, Everything Must Go, shows off not only a confident Einbinder that seems like she’s on her third special, but is a very welcome, colorful, agile, and hysterical break (shout out also to director/one of the the Three Busy Debras, Sandy Honig) from the litany of stand-up crowd work videos that seem to be all that the art form has to offer these days. Additionally, Hannah impressively makes a go at tackling critical, current issues, often in a very niche ways, but cleverly devises very layered, nuanced, very fun bits as sugar to make the necessary medicine go down. With that all said, please enjoy Hannah Einbinder: Everything Must Go now streaming on Max.

2. After Midnight officially scored a season 2 (Forbes). That’s not entirely surprising given that the original went for 600 episodes, but we’ll be curious to see if Taylor Tomlinson and co. will get their own original recurring segment that rivals #hashtagwars.

3. Leave it to the imagination (and screaming ability) of the one and only Conner O’Malley to create a definitive satirical comedy special of the zeitgeist that perfectly skewers the intersection of A.I. and comedy and everyone’s anxiety around it. Please enjoy the brilliance of Stand Up Solutions right now if you haven’t done so already. SERIOUSLY, stop reading this and go and watch it. DO IT. One can only hope that this guides a whole new wave of what comedy specials can and should be in the months and years to come.

4. The sheer exuberance and poetry of Petey DeAbreu‘s comedy and vision of NYC should qualify him to be a “comedian laureate of the five boroughs”. If that’s not a thing, let’s make it one. See why with his Don’t Tell set here.

5. From Chris Rock to Seinfeld to Jimmy Fallon to Conan O’Brien to dozens upon dozens of comedians from around the globe (though it should be noted that this includes well over 50 Italian comedians and only one British one, Stephen Merchant) met with Pope Francis this week (via THR). This will be all of their late night stories for the next three to five years.

6. THE TikTok star to watch, Sabrina Brier, is going into the audiobook game with a title that might surprise you, “That Friend” (via Variety).

7. John Early is having yet another banner year with one of the most fun entrances Seth Meyers has had in awhile and going on a tour with his band, The Lemon Squares, that we had previously thought we were only going to get to see in his special Now More Than Ever.

8. Netflix Is a Joke Festival concluded it’s second edition a few weeks ago and, with it, their second round of “Introducing…”, their version of New Faces/Comics to Watch. For our money, keep an eye out on the wondrous and original stylings of Kel Cripe and Mandal.

9. Amazon is placing its latest bets of comedy special money on Sam Morril with You’ve Changed. Wonder what sort of money (or Amazon gift cards) Amazon is shelling out to bring on folks who have Netflix specials on to their side from the streaming giant. From the looks of it, it doesn’t get more classic looking of a comedy special than what Morril has up suit sleeves for this one, especially since it was only a few years ago that he did a rooftop special.

10. As there are comedians in the Ukraine doing comedy during this war with Russia, so comes a documentary of them doing just that, Comedy of War: Laughter in Ukraine. That has to be the first war in history that has had multiple documentary works made of it while it still is very much going on. Take a gander at Comedy of War‘s trailer here, then you can stream it via Comedy Dynamics right now.

11. Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat is doing “Group Therapy” as a comedy show with the likes of Mike Birbiglia, Neil Patrick Harris, Nicole Byer, Tig Notaro, Atsuko Okatsuka, Gary Gulman, and London Hughes. That’s a gala worthy line-up, but something that ought to be undeniably engrossing to watch. Take a gander at Group Therapy here.

12. Ghosts is such a hit for CBS that it’s following in the footsteps of The Office and having a German spin-off (Deadline).

13. Carmen Lynch might be setting a new bar for comedians that started in English and expanded to performing en Español. Get a taste of what that’s like with a trailer for Una Hora de Carmen Lynch here. Watch the whole special here.

14. Liz Miele is the latest comedian to unfairly suffer the wrath of YouTube’s hate speech algorithm. Thankfully, making a video about it has resulted in a reinstatement of ads, which Liz can go on and continue to make money off her self-produced and self-released special, as is the hope of many a comedian these days.

15. FYI, Adventure Time is pretty much getting into the cinematic universe business now (Variety).

16. First, Broad City, then an expansive remake/spin-off of A League of Their Own, and now Abbi Jacobson is getting into an adaptation of a “gender-bending, body switching” story that explores the “nature of true partnership” with Isle McElroy’s People Collide (Deadline). Love Jacobson’s arc of projects here and can’t wait to see where else she goes with it.

17. The creme de la creme of comedy classes will meet again between Kristen Wiig and Carol Burnett since Palm Royale has got a second season (Deadline).

18. The revived Beavis & Butthead scored a third season at Comedy Central (Deadline). A special thanks should go to Heidi Gardner and Ryan Gosling and Mikey Day.

19. There’s another adopted comedy based off the life of actor Owen Thiele in the works (THR). Fingers crossed that it will be more realistic and, thus, less rosy than Trying.

20. Late Night with Seth Meyers will no longer have a house band in just a few months (Variety) and this very well might be the first sign of late night being REALLY reimagined/shaken up/imploding.

21. There will be a Wallace & Gromit holiday movie and, honestly, no one else should even try as that’ll be more than enough adorable humor/adventure for the holiday season (via THR).

22. Hey Millennials, remember when Cartoon Network was the center of your universe? Well, there’s a new streaming service (that has to be your favorite phrase to hear these days, right?), Animation+, looking to fill in that nostalgic void (via The Wrap)

23. Please enjoy Tim Robinson in not a ITYSL sketch (but it kind of is?), but a promo for the new edition of skate. here.

24. Jimmy Fallon will be giggling his way through interviews through 2028 (via Variety).

25. We’ll leave you with this: If you want tix to Eric Andre @ The Bellwether in LA on 7/19, we might know someone. Hit us up.

TCB Debriefing 2/5/24: Laura Peek, Grammys, Dick Turpin, Stand Up NY, Materialists, Alan Partridge, Worth the Wait, Jenny Slate, Karen Gillan, Joe DeRosa

1. Dave Chappelle won another Grammy for Best Comedy Album. Apparently, Chappelle has achieved a new milestone in his storied career of reframing the category of “Best Comedy Album” to award excellence in being massively out-of-touch and somehow failing upwards anyhow (as well as not recording a comedy album, but doing a special, then releasing the audio from said special to count as an “album”).

2. You’ll know the comedy category in The Grammys is fixed when people like the fan-f’n-tastic Laura Peek have a legit shot at winning. Just watch this Don’t Tell set and you’ll know what we mean.

3. Noel Fielding is returning to something more in his late (as opposed to hosting the Bake Off) with starring as one of history’s more charming highwaymen, Dick Turpin, in The Completely Made-Up Adventures of Dick Turpin. Kind of seems like Our Flag Means Death, but on land, no? Take a gander for yourself with the first official trailer here, then look for it to premiere on Apple TV+ on Mar. 1st.

4. The staffers of Stand Up NY are owed so very much and, as such, are going on strike. Please support them in earning a living wage through their GoFundMe here. Stay in the loop/share @stand_up_ny_strike on IG.

5. Celine Song is moving from her critically acclaimed feature debut of Past Lives into rom com territory with, potentially, Dakota Johnson, Pedro Pascal, and Chris Evans starring in a project called, The Materialists (Variety). Perhaps, Song will bring prestige back into romantic comedies (because well, Woody Allen isn’t going to do that).

6. Even though you didn’t know you needed more of him, Alan Partridge, Steve Coogan‘s most famous bumbling radio DJ character, is set to make a return and what a relief it is (Deadline).

7. Lana Condor is fashioning herself into a rom com star with her latest role in Worth the Wait, a “modern take on Love Actually (which hopefully means it’s less problematic)” boasting a majorly Asian American cast (Variety).

8. Get your full first look at Jenny Slate‘s hour, Seasoned Professional, here. This might be making comedy history as the first special to be taken seriously while done in shorts starting Feb. 23rd on Amazon Prime.

9. The coolest version of Mary Tudor is going to hit the big screen soon as one Karen Gillan will be playing one of history’s most famous Marys (Variety)

10. Free Joe DeRosa tickets! WE GOT FREE JOE DEROSA TICKETS HERE! GET YOUR FREE JOE DEROSA TICKETS HERE! (seriously, we got some free tix to Joe DeRosa at the swanky Peppermint Club; if you want ’em, just let us know at thecomedybureau@gmail.com)

11. We’ll leave you with this: One way to host SNL is get fired from it, appeal to whole demographic of disenfranchised men and libertarians with, admittedly, good comedic technique, get a Netflix special, and have SNL feel like they need to balance out their center left perspective for some reason?

News
amazon, apple tv plus, bill burr, central park, cole escola, george santos, ziwe

1. Ziwe might be interviewing freshly ousted U.S. Representative George Santos. This is further proof that Showtime/Paramount is wholly foolhardy and short-sighted (for the sake of profit margins) for cancelling an iconic show.

Let’s do it @ziwe 😜 https://t.co/Y4TbeZEGOg

— George Santos (@MrSantosNY) December 3, 2023

3. The brilliance of Cole Escola will not be denied. This “lost” pilot for “Our Home Out West” is equal parts pitch-perfect camp and sharply drawn absurdism in a charming dreamy version of a Western with Cole giving Eddie Murphy a run for his money in playing multiple characters. Please watch and enjoy “Our Home Out West” now and over and over.

3. Apple TV+ cancels the musical comedy series Central Park after three seasons (Deadline). So much for a Bob’s Burgers, Great North, Central Park mega crossover episode in the Loren Bouchard-iverse (is that a thing, yet?).

4. Bill Burr has just announced his 2024 dates and we have a feeling you better set several reminders if you want to get tickets at billburr.com/tour if you want to get tix on Wednesday.

5. We’ll leave you with this: Amazon is brazenly taunting your dependence on them as a corporation in the Fallout trailer. Shop accordingly (i.e. maybe not on Amazon) this holiday season.

Get Your First Look at Boots Riley’s Latest “I’m a Virgo”

March 6, 2023
News
amazon, boots riley, brett gray, i'm a virgo

About 5 years ago, Boots Riley kicked the door in at theaters with his directorial debut Sorry to Bother You and left one hell of a mark on our brain for how daring and hysterical and original and how unapologetically satirical it was (the ending is one of the most unforgettable endings we’ve seen in a movie). Of course, we were chomping at the bit for whatever Boots’ next project would be. Talk of I’m a Virgo, the story of a thirteen foot tall black man trying to figure out his way in the world in Oakland, CA was announced to be that very project, but a certain pandemic made the wait for said project longer than we all would have liked.

Thankfully, that wait is coming to an end soon and, as of today, we were all treated to a first glimpse of what I’m A Virgo would look/sound/feel like and it has the makings of something, perhaps, as exciting as Sorry to Bother You (and a star making turn for the lead playing the 13 footer, Brett Gray).

There’s a sense of 21st century magical realism set against the tattered quilt that is America and we’re on board for wherever Riley chooses to go with it.

See for yourself with the I’m A Virgo teaser here, then make sure you have some way to watch Amazon Prime in order to see it when it comes out, presumably, some time this year.

Megan Gailey and Emily Heller Sports Show Comedy in the Works at Amazon

July 29, 2022
News

(via Deadline)

One aspect of sports that comedy hasn’t touched too much on is the actual reporting of it. Eons ago, there was the wondrous meta web series Mayne Street with Kenny Mayne, featuring the one and only Jon Glaser as a go-to cameraman.

Megan Gailey and Emily Heller are putting together a series for Amazon that will satirize sports coverage between a die hard female sports fan and a far-past-his-prime, former pro basketball player that have “history”. There’s no word as to any sort of cast at this point, but we have hard time imagining a more perfect role for the hysterical Megan Gailey than rowdy-fan-turned-sports-reporter. In fact, that might be the best way for America to fall in love with Gailey if they haven’t done so already from her set on Conan or her album My Dad Paid For This.

Also, if you love Barry at all, you’ve been enjoying some of the writing of the brilliant Emily Heller and this combo of her and Gailey ought to, we hope, equal a series order from Amazon sooner rather than later.

Ramy Youssef Signs First Look Deal and Gets Adult Animated Series at Amazon

March 10, 2022
News
amazon, first look deal, ramy youssef

While Ramy the series isn’t moving forward at Hulu, the show’s namesake, Ramy Youssef, is hardly close from being finished on his end. Announced today, Ramy has inked a first look deal with Amazon to develop and produce projects for one of the biggest companies in the world (and also the place where such amazing boundary pushing shows such as Fleabag and Transparent called home).

Youssef’s very particular brand of dramedy when it comes to TV will be fascinating to see in this first project born from this deal, an adult animated series that will stream exclusively on Amazon Prime. No other details are available at this time for the series, but it’s probably a safe bet that it will be a very personal show that could only come from Ramy’s unique point-of-view being in between worlds of America and desiring to be a more faithful Muslim and would probably only get made on streaming service for the amount of tricky territory that Youssef likes exploring.

Note that this is only the first project from this deal at Amazon and we’re intensely curious to see what else he’s got cooking, which will hopefully be revealed in the not too distant future (maybe when the pandemic truly becomes an endemic).

My Favorite Murder to Release Episodes a Week Early Exclusively on Amazon

(via THR)

Spotify isn’t the only media giant interested in hoarding podcast content to themselves. Amazon (specifically Amazon Music and Wondery) is now getting into the podcast game with cutting a deal with Exactly Right Media, the network launches solely on the back of My Favorite Murder, to have episodes release a week early before their available on all the usual podcast platforms.

The overlords at Amazon represent a much bigger media conglomerate than Spotify or iHeart or any other network that takes on exclusive audio content (not to mention that Amazon owns Audible) making this is a significant move for My Favorite Murder, but the world of podcasting in general. Amazon isn’t buying Exactly Right Media (though we’re sure they could afford it), but partnering with Karen and Georgia and their true crime comedy podcast juggernaut to be the first place where die hard Murderinos will first listen to the podcast and take advantage of a lucrative window to sell ads.

Keep in mind that My Favorite Murder started off very humbly based off of a conversation that Karen and Georgia had at a party about true crime without any idea that it would grow into the massive community and network that it is now. Turns out that almost every major entertainment outlet had overlooked a comedic take on true crime from the perspective of women that are pretty much your close friends.

We’ll be curious to see where the MFM empire goes in 2022 as it’s already off to a pretty hot/SSDGM start.

Ziwe’s Iconic Status Continues to Grow with Developing New Series at Amazon

(via Variety)

Ziwe’s manifesting of being an icon continues. Her eponymous Showtime show following her massive success on IG Live is leading further down her iconic path. The latest stop on the path is getting to develop a whole new show at Amazon that feels like Ziwe’s own twist on Dirty Rotten Scoundrels.

Called The Nigerian Princess, it’ll be unlikely buddy comedy where two prep school grads team up and also scheme against each other in the quest to secure that ever fleeting American dream.

If you’ve seen Ziwe, you ought to know that Ziwe will absolutely pull no punches, even if it comes to examining her own biases that are inherently present within this particular project. With that in mind, we wonder if Amazon will get sent up in this as well? We’ll just wait, hope this gets a green light, and see.

Amazon Taps Phoebe Waller-Bridge & Donald Glover to Reboot Mr. & Mrs. Smith as Series

February 15, 2021
News

(via Deadline)

So, Amazon is taking a proven IP and gathering two of the most sought after voices in comedy right now and stirring it all on a pot together. Let’s hope that works.

Both Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Donald Glover created two of the most acclaimed comedies of the last few years in Fleabag and Atlanta, respectively. Both shows had them starring and leading the charge creatively resulting in a plethora of glowing reviews, award nominations, and even a good chunk of award wins.

Mr. & Mrs. Smith was a blockbuster spy/action adventure rom com that most folks know from 2005 starring Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt with Doug Liman, one of the best action directors around, at the helm. As you may well know, it was a commercial success.

We’re curious to see how two of comedy’s current geniuses along with Atlanta writer/producer Francesca Sloane will reboot the series (we’d guess that it’s going to be quite different from the movie) at Amazon and make it more than just relying on something that has worked before a few times with beloved names attached.

As the wheels turn in our head, we’re imagining something between Run, Killing Eve, and the music video for This Is America. That works for us, but we’ll just have to wait, probably awhile because of COVID-19, and see what Waller-Bridge, Glover, and Sloane actually have their up sleeve.

Borat 2 Will Be Streaming on Amazon Prime Right Before the Election

News
amazon, borat 2, election day, sacha baron cohen

(via Deadline)

It wasn’t too long ago that the news that the sequel to Sacha Baron Cohen’s breakout film Borat was already in the can, which was pretty surprising on its own. That means Cohen somehow fooled enough folks in some sort of amalgamation of characters and did in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Following that, we figured it would take some time to stitch together, but, alas, that doesn’t seem to be the case either.

Announced today, the sequel to Borat will be released via Amazon Prime near the end of October, conveniently right before the U.S. General Election on Nov. 3rd. It’s no surprise that Cohen would have anything up his sleeve especially since he hoodwinked Dick Cheney on Who Is America?. It does make us wonder though if Cohen actually has some actual “October surprise” in store for us all that’s not unlike James Comey’s ill-timed letter about investigating Hillary Clinton’s e-mails.

If he indeed does, maybe it will, at least, be more substantive to the election than what Comey found.

We’ll just have to wait and see. Also, if you’re taking a stand against Amazon, it might be a good time, in a few weeks, to take on that free trial of Amazon Prime.

The landmark dark and absurdist humor of the legendary Canadian sketch group, Kids In the Hall, are indeed set to return via Amazon Prime. The entire group, Dave Foley, Kevin McDonald, Bruce McCulloch, Mark McKinney and Scott Thompson are all on board for 8 brand spankin’ new episodes.

They’re planning on bringing back many of your favorite characters, but we hope we get something new and as wonderfully offbeat for today as the Kids in the Hall were for the 90s.

Thus, the amassing of content for the streaming wars continues and Amazon, for our money, scored big.

Amazon Re-ups The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel for Fourth Season

Once again, Amazon’s prestige series, even above all of their dramas, is going to get renewed (so long as Amy Sherman-Palladino is game of course).

What will be interesting to see here is how long The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel might go and where the show could go now as a perennial award winner and leader for Amazon Studios. Would they make it into the 70s, which could be really fascinating to see how Midge handles that particular boom in comedy (maybe even a little differently than I’m Dying Up Here)?

There’s no telling about any of that right now, so just enjoy getting more Mrs. Maisel in the not too distant future.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge Signs Big Overall Deal with Amazon

“Under the deal, Waller-Bridge will create and produce new television content for Amazon Studios that will premiere exclusively on Amazon Prime Video.

Sources say the deal is worth around $20 million a year.”

For all that you can say about Amazon these days, at least they did the right thing here by paying Phoebe Waller-Bridge a bunch of money to keep making TV and content.

Even though Waller-Bridge says that Fleabag is done as a series, we’re sure that she has something else cooking that will take all of our collective breaths away between taking us through the entire spectrum of human emotions.

Alice Wetterlund to Have Stand-up Special “My Mama Is a Human and So Am I” at Amazon

We were wondering when Amazon was going to push forward with stand-up comedy specials in going toe-to-toe with Netflix.

Well, we’re glad to see that Amazon has tapped the splendid Alice Wetterlund to release a special (and, maybe, fill the space that Netflix used to by giving full comedy specials to comedians that weren’t already majorly famous at the time of their first Netflix special, highlighting some great talent, i.e. Ali Wong, Tom Segura, Jen Kirkman).

Called My Mama Is a Human and So Am I, it’s due out later this year to stream on Amazon Prime and will hopefully be the first in many comedy specials that Amazon sagaciously produces.

Phoebe Waller-Bridge is delving into a crisis of faith for the second round of her critically acclaimed Fleabag and, according to this first full trailer, it looks to be just as unhinged, introspective, juicy, and dark (like deep-in-your-gut) funny.

See for yourself, then look for episodes to start streaming on Amazon on Fri. May 17th.

It takes quite the comedian to carve out a big place in comedy and not basing themselves in LA or NYC (though the Internet has made that a teensy bit easier in the last few years).

Chad Daniels is one such comedian that shows why with his second hour special, Dad Chaniels. He truly is a ‘Midwestern King of Comedy’ and has the polish, chops, sharp observations, and resolve to have such a title (not to mention that he is still based out of Minnesota). This new hour showcases Daniels in top form with clever observations (and even boldly doing a take on #MeToo that includes Aziz’s incident) and playful poking and prodding of the audience.

Get a taste of all of this in the trailer. If you’re digging, it you can go stream Dad Chaniels now on Amazon.

From the looks of the second season trailer, series creator Amy Sherman-Palladino and star Rachel Brosnahan look onwards to swing past the fences and be as stellar as possible, similar to Midge herself.

This second season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel starts on Amazon Prime on Wednesday, December 5th.

Amazon to Do a 6 Part Documentary Series on Getting JFL Montreal’s New Faces

For decades, one of the most sought out milestones in comedy when coming up has been and still is getting selected to be part of Just For Laughs Montreal’s New Faces of Comedy.

So, Amazon has decided to do a docu-series on the process and following comedians in trying to secure a slot on the renowned festival’s New Faces line-up, which will show how much stress and work goes in to essentially doing what’s supposed to be a life-changing set in front of members of the industry.

As there are cameras rolling, maybe all those picked as New Faces will actually get something out of the whole thing besides just doing a few shows in Montreal and taking a few general meetings.

We’re guessing this will drop on Amazon a bit after JFL Montreal happens this Summer.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Renewed for Season Three by Amazon Before Season Two Premieres Later This Year

Amazon may not be cranking out shows like competitor Netflix, but it looks like they’ve placed some solid bets with their few shows as Marvelous Mrs. Maisel just won a Peabody Award (and a Golden Globe as well) with only one season having been released/aired.

Also, as Transparent will be coming to having its swan song soon, Amazon conveniently has its next face for its comedy brand ready to go.

Jeffrey Tambor Will Officially No Longer Be Part of ‘Transparent’

Following the internal investigation at Amazon of harassment claims against Tambor, Jill Soloway and Amazon have decided that Tambor’s behavior “could could not be justified or excused under scrutiny,” in a statement to Deadline. Thus, they have decided to sever ties between him and Transparent, the award winning series of which he plays the lead role of Maura Pfefferman.

This is a sign that #MeToo is far from slowing down and the idea that sexual harassment, misbehavior, misconduct, assault, etc. will now have actionable and immediate consequences.
