Drunk History has been and remains one of the most satisfying ways important, often overlooked tales of history have ever been shared. As it’s officially February, Black History Month, it is thus the perfect time for some Drunk Black History.

Comedians Brandon Collins and Gordon Baker-Bone will be hosting a very special line-up of drunk black comedians attempting to tell some very important Black History stories via Zoom. The likes of Aminah Imani, Abbi Crutchfield, Brian Moses, and Derek Gaines will join Collins and Baker-Bone on this edition of Drunk Black History.

American Black Film Festival to Launch Its Own Virtual Comedy Festival & Is Currently Taking Submissions

Just because many comedy festivals are taking this year/another year off or maybe just doing a very scaled down virtual version of their festivities, doesn’t mean that some sort of new comedy festivals won’t come about.

Cast in point, the American Black Film Festival is launching their very first comedy festival to highlight comedians and comedy writers that are black and brown from Jun. 2nd-6th. Everything from stand-up to sketch to film, TV, and podcasts will be highlighted and Kenya Barris will even serve as the ambassador of this very 1st Annual ABFF Comedy Festival.

If you’re an “emerging black and brown comedic talent, creators, and performing artist” that has been waiting for something like this to come around, you’ll be happy to know that there’s an open call for submissions into one of the four competitions they have slated for this festival. The deadline to submit is Mar. 8th, FYI.

Noah Baumbach Signs Deal to Exclusively Write/Direct Films at Netflix for Awhile

Count this as both a sign of the times and a big win in favor of Netflix. Getting lauded filmmaker Noah Baumbach (Frances Ha, Greenberg, Mistress America) to exclusively have his talents at the streaming giant and nowhere else bumps up Netflix’s profile in the critical eye for original movies and means that you’ll very likely get to see any and all of Baumbach’s upcoming work on Netflix in tandem with seeing it in a theater (whenever that’ll be happen in 2021).

Baumbach’s last film, Marriage Story, rolled out in limited release (so it can be considered for the Oscars and other awards) and on Netflix and it would seem that will be the plan for Baumbach going forward for awhile. We wouldn’t be surprised to see other beloved indie filmmakers signing such deals at other streaming services since the fate of movie theaters remains uncertain (save for the now-Netflix-owned Egyptian Theatre).

There is such a backlog of big studio releases that will very likely dominate the multiplexes, even the ones that have dozens of screens, that will leave room for those critically acclaimed dramedies that are, usually, the only way comedy gets any sort of artistic reception these days.

All of that said, we do have a guarantee that Baumbach will be churning out movies in the not so distant future and that’s just one more little thing to look forward amidst the din of everything else right now.

Pick of the Day: Sarah Silverman 3/6

Since lockdown last year, odds are that you haven’t gotten to see any of your favorite comedians save for a small appearance on a charity benefit live-stream here or there. Some exceptions exist of course (Maria Bamford, Judah Friedlander, Jackie Kashian), but seeing many of the top shelf comedians for at least an hour has been quite a rarity for the last several months.

Thus, we’re giving you a heads up on the one and only Sarah Silverman doing an exclusive live-stream via Rushtix where she’ll be getting into a rather candid talk with the virtual audience. Silverman, as she wonderfully did in person in the before times, will take in questions and comments throughout the live-stream, making it even more intimate than just watching her do a set.

If you’ve ever really wished for Kristen Wiig do whatever the hell she wants for an entire feature length film, that time might have come. Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar is written by Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumulo and also stars the duo as two Midwestern best friends embarking from a small town on a dream vacation.

Such a premise leaves a very wide canvas they get to play with and, from the looks of the trailer, it really looks as though Wiig and Mumulo really take advantage of that to the upcoming delight of us all. Honestly, we’re just not going to say anymore and let the magical silliness of Barb & Star Go To Vista Del Mar wash over you here.

Look for its release, wherever that may be, on Fri., Feb. 12th.

Pick of the Day: Channel 101 Jan. 2021 Screening 1/30

Channel 101, the vaunted, long-standing indie short form TV series is still standing strong as we head towards a year of being locked down due to COVID-19. Though virtual, they’ve been as active as they have ever been with their monthly screenings (in addition to whole new audio series program they started a few months back).

Their first screening for 2021 is set for this Saturday with an early and late screening at 8PM PT/11PM ET and 10PM PT/1AM ET respectively. You can tune into this brand spankin’ new edition of Channel 101 on their Twitch at twitch.tv/channel101official/.

Merging of Late Night and Sketch Comedy Emmy Categories Sparks Ire and a Joint Letter

Comedy already comes up with the short straw during awards season and it looks like it’s going to get more unfair with the Emmys, as of this year, combining the nominees in late night comedy and sketch comedy together rather than have their own separate categories as was the rule for so long.

Networks and showrunners are set to submit a letter to the Academy of TV Arts & Sciences to reverse the change for the upcoming Primetime Emmys.

It might seem like a niche issue, especially during a pandemic, but, again, the squeezing of recognition for comedy at a major awards is worrisome in the long run. Also, for those who aren’t aware, late night may have sketches here and there, but it’s definitely its own realm that is decidedly different in tone, pacing, and format to any sort of sketch comedy series. Would you really pit Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Late Night with Seth Meyers against A Black Lady Sketch Show I Think You Should Leave or Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun?

If you would, then we’d kindly ask you to think about the potential notoriety and opportunity that could come for writers/showrunners/the shows themselves from having separate awards for late night and sketch and how much that could do for pushing comedy forward. Very seriously, how is there supposed to be room for great newcomers in late night like Desus & Mero if the field is dominated by perennial favorites like Colbert and SNL?

Reportedly, this controversy might even lead to a boycott of the Emmys (if they have to be done over Zoom again or in some sort of weird pre-taped, socially distanced way, would very likely be more exciting than the ceremony itself).

This year’s Primetime Emmys are usually held in September, so there is time for this to change and we’ll definitely keep you in the loop if that happens.

The beginning of every year, as far as comedy is concerned, can be celebrated with the venerable SF Sketchfest, one of the biggest, most respected, longest running comedy festivals in the world. It’s three weeks of hundreds of shows and thousands of the best performers in comedy all over San Francisco making for the first big comedy event of the calendar year.

Of course, that can’t happen this year due to COVID-19 and SF Sketchfest co-founder Cole Stratton zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger about what to do in place of nearly a month of live in-person shows with one big virtual comedy extravaganza (and fundraiser for SF Sketchfest itself) Festpocalypse. Cole also details how doing improv has adapted to the virtual space as well as “hot” takes on Chappelle getting COVID-19, the CA stay-at-home order being lifted, and the debacle of combining the late night and sketch variety categories with the Emmys.

Oh yeah, we’ll remind you once more: don’t gather in person to watch the Super Bowl. Watching it alone is fine.

Little America & Female TV Leads Mark Nominations for Comedy This Year’s Spirit-Awards

Unfortunately, it should come as no surprise that comedy is coming up short in nominations for awards even amongst the Film Independent Spirit Awards where comedies tend to have more of a chance of inclusion. The past year saw a lot of delays and postponements in releases both big and small, leaving lots to be desired when it comes to comedy.

Also, the pandemic made comedy, in so many ways, harder to figure out than ever before.

Thus, comedy only garnered a small handful of nominations for the 2021 Spirit Awards. Apple TV+’s Little America anthology series scored Best Series and two Best Male Performance in a Scripted Series noms for Conphidance and Adam Ali. Radha Blank’s excellent The Forty Year Old Version got a nod for Best First Feature. Then, the Best Female Performance in a Scripted Series category actually had Elle Fanning, Abby McEnany, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan nominated for The Great, Work In Progress, and Never Have I Ever.

FYI, Spirit Awards puts more emphasis to freshman TV series in case you’re wondering why What We Do In The Shadows is absent from the list.

There’s no telling what sort of signal this will give as to the rest of awards season and how comedy will fare. For now, you should watch all of what was nominated if you haven’t already (Never Have I Ever, Work In Progress, and The Forty Year Old Version are worth watching ASAP).

The Spirit Awards will be given out Thurs. Apr. 22nd, hosted by Patton Oswalt.

Pick of the Day: Self Care Comedy (Starting 2/1)

For most of 2020, we relied on @ComedyQuarantine on IG for a daily pick me up of a virtual stand-up show thanks to hosts Teresa Lee, Barbara Gray, Dominique Gelin, and producer Naked Comedy/Sam Varela.

Now, for 2021, you can look forward to another very solid and reliable daily stand-up show from Naked Comedy in Self Care Comedy, starting Mon. Feb. 1st at 7PM PT/10PM ET with another great round of hosts in DeAnne Smith, Christine Little, Anna Valenzuela, Sofiya Alexandra, and Sean Keane.

Monday-Friday, this Self Care Comedy crew will serve up some much needed daily relief in stand-up comedy with special guests on Zoom. A $10 donation is suggested for the show (doing a stand-up on all weeknights is such a big undertaking in case you didn’t know).

Search Party Season 4 Has Set the Bar for TV Comedy in 2021

It can be argued that we’re in strange, yet slightly familiar territory just a few weeks into 2021. Biden has succeeded Trump as POTUS and, while there are signs of Biden picking up where Obama left off, the threats of the ongoing pandemic and economic crises are keeping things plenty off-kilter.

Yes, there are very likely spoilers here, FYI.

In a similar vein, Search Party has gotten six episodes into its fourth season, now at HBO Max instead of TBS, and has lifted its own formula, turned it inside out, and really swung for the fences in how outlandish, dark, and absolutely, unapologetically absurd it’s willing to get (having Dory now go missing and being kept captive in a padded wall version of her apartment kept permanently lit for daytime). For that, it has unquestionably come out the gate for 2021 as the best comedy series thus far (and it’s going to be pretty hard to top).

The balance of the sinister kidnapping of Dory by Cole Escola’s brilliantly demented Chip and how satisfyingly ridiculous every single character is in the series (especially John Early’s Elliott Goss, both in attire and character arc as a turncoat conservative sellout) is something we’re left in awe of. Following the B-story of a mini-series adaptation of the events of the first three seasons Search Party with Meredith Hagner’s Portia playing Dory within these season 4 episodes ratchets up the hysterical bizarreness of the whole world even further. Often, you might be left breathless for how the show deftly shifts its tones, even better and more acutely than it has in the past, and how so much of the dialogue is so brashly funny.

It’s very clear that we’re still in dark times, but there are peculiar bits of light here and there and, for our money, this latest season of Search Party meets the moment we’re still stuck in and, most importantly, gives us something really damn good to watch on TV while quarantine continues.

Six episodes of S4 of Search Party are currently streaming on HBO Max and the final four are due out on Thurs. Jan. 28th.

Pick of the Day: The Worst Idea of All Time-And Just Like That… The Pilot 2/18

Years ago, New Zealand comedians Tim Batt & Guy Montgomery embarked a mind-bending journey of watching the same, usually universally panned movie, every week for a year and recorded the results via a podcast, aptly titled The Worst Idea of All Time.

They survived four seasons of doing that, two of which involved watching Sex and the City movies for a year.

Now, that there’s going to be a new reboot of Sex and the City, a Kim Cattrall-less And Just Like That…, Batt and Montgomery are honoring this new round of SATC by doing a special virtual performance of their version of the pilot episode of And Just Like That…

For the oversaturated amount of hours of watching Sex and the City, this ought to be real fun.

Dave Chappelle Tests Positive for COVID-19

Dave Chappelle was one of the few comedians that could tour with all the sort of precautions that one can take to do in-person shows during this COVID-19 pandemic. He had been doing socially distanced outdoor shows in Ohio and had just started doing them in Austin, TX. Despite rapid testing for the audience and going through daily testing himself, it was just announced by Chappelle’s reps that Chappelle has contracted COVID-19 asymptomatically. There’s no trace as to how he specifically got it yet, but, as we all know at this point, the spread of COVID-19 is so rampant that there might be no telling where he got it.

He has since cancelled those shows that he had scheduled and refunded any tickets bought. There’s no word as of yet, but we can only hope that the rest of those Austin crowds are COVID-19 free.

It’s important to note here that no sort of gathering is entirely safe during this pandemic and that you can only mitigate the probability of transmission. Chappelle utilized all the measures available to him to try to do shows and somehow, he still caught the virus.

There will inevitably be a period where things attempt to reopen in earnest and for good as the vaccine distribution moves forward. Yet, this is a perfect example of why the protocols that scientists have put in place to combat the spread of the virus will have to stay until the majority of the world’s population gets inoculated. Essentially, things won’t be safe until we all can be safe and we can only wish that this lesson will stick very soon.

Some people felt a modicum of relief yesterday as Biden got sworn in as POTUS, but the wounds and scars we’ve endured (and are going to very likely going to continue to endure) need to heal (especially in regards to mental health).

Thus, a comedy live-stream on mental health, specifically great comedians sharing their lives that they’ve lead with parents with mental illness might be something pretty perfect for right now. Performing stand-up comedy on a street corner, unannounced in Riverside might be quite the risky, lonely proposition. However, given the times of COVID-19 that we’re still very much in, we’re not afforded much else in live comedy.

Thusly, Aaron Chase, currently based in Riverside, has tried to busk on the corner, unannounced, with his stand-up that he feels he still is very much honing, to empty, socially distant chairs (though, sometimes, he gets a small distanced crowd of passersby). The image of it almost looks fresh out of a René Magritte painting, but Chase carries on, sharpening his comedy on his terms as safely as he can by doing it completely alone. Aaron goes over the journey to and through performing stand-up on the street alone and what he wants to do going forward/when the pandemic ends with TCB’s Jake Kroeger.

Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready Season 2 Gives a First Look

You might have noticed that the flow of brand new comedy specials hasn’t been the way that it used to be early on in 2019. A lack of new specials and a drying up of networks and streaming services’ comedy special reserves have made it so that we don’t even necessarily get a new special every week. That’s just the way things are due to the pandemic and that will just have to be that way for a while longer.

That being said, there’s still specials to be enjoyed, namely the latest edition of Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready. There’s a whole second season lined up featuring comedians handpicked by Haddish herself to highlight. That includes Kimberly Clark (a long time personal favorite of ours), Erin Jackson, Godfrey, Tony Woods, Barbara Carlyle, and Dean Edwards (not to mention the joyful grace of Haddish presenting the whole series).

The level and speed of greed that we’ve been subjected to over the last five years is at such a degree that it’s going to take awhile before we get to measure the full extent of the damage done by those profiteering off of the inequality of the majority of the world.

Accordingly, we have and we shall get more stories, movies, etc. of these times as we will be getting in the upcoming dark comedy I Care A Lot starring the sort of Rosamund Pike that you saw in her breakout role in Gone Girl. From writer/director J Blakeson, Pike goes to a whole new level of cunning by bilking invalid geriatrics out of their assets and, of course, that doesn’t come without eventually running into very severe consequences (delightfully in the form of Peter Dinklage).

This week is indeed the week of the inauguration of the 46th President of the United States and because the 45th was such an evil nimrod, this week is going to be yet another momentous and very likely tumultuous point in history that we’re all having to live through.

So, it might be nice to tune into another live-stream edition of the radical comedy, American history podcast, The Dollop, to further understand and how the United States brashly lumbered and tumbled to where we are now. Something off-beat, absurd, otherworldly even is very likely the prescription to get through even a few more hours of the grotesque historical events that we’re living through.

Not only are Lauren Lapkus, Mary Holland, Erin Whitehead, and Stephanie Allynne are assembling virtually as one of the best improv groups that was ever formed in Wild Horses for their first live-stream of 2021, courtesy of Dynasty Typewriter, but they’re featuring one of our hands-down, all-time favorite comedians to watch, Naomi Ekperigin for this particular Jan. 2021 show.

For those unfamiliar (and we’re almost envious that you get to discover Wild Horses at this point), Lapkus, Holland, Whitehead, and Allynne check-in with each other in as good friends would at a bar or party along with their featured guest and then do their signature brilliant improv following that. Whether it be Largo, UCB, or wherever else they were playing, it was one of the improv shows we looked forward the most in the before times.
