Pick of the Day: What Does it All Mean, What Does Any of This Mean? Why? How? Help! (in LA) 12/5

November 22, 2023
News
alison stevenson, existential crisis, los angeles comedy, philosophical research society, talk show

The return of movie and TV stars as the go-to guests for late night means that there’s less chance to ponder the human condition, the existential crisis derived from the meaning of it “all”, and whether comedy actually makes a difference (because movies have to be promoted by their talent, right?).

Thankfully, LA comedy staple Alison Stevenson is putting on a talk show to actually get back to actually filling the actual void by staring right into it (with a panel of amazing LA comedians including Guy Branum, Brian Bahe, Johnny Pemberton, Maggie Maye, and Laurie Kilmartin). The philosopher king aspect of comedy will definitely be highlighted on Tues. Dec. 5th at 7PM at The Philosophical Research Society when the aptly named What Does it All Mean, What Does Any of This Mean? Why? How? Help! goes down.

Tickets are only $15 for a talk show that isn’t going to sidestep the meaning of life through playing some version of Match Game. Go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: Blake Rosier’s Bad Show (in NYC) 8/5

News

We’re thrilled that Blake Rosier, one of the bolder, daring comedians (e.g. doing shows with permitted tomato throwing at the performers, performing/living in theaters for a whole week) in the LA comedy scene right now, is currently on tour across the country. Rosier’s penchant for experimentation and knack for absurdity and commitment to vulnerability have made for some of the most memorable, enthralling, and hilarious shows we’ve seen in awhile.

Come next week, Rosier’s tour with his “bad” show will find its way to Union Hall in Brooklyn and New Yorkers can delight in Blake’s special kind of controlled chaos. Blake Rosier’s Bad Show will take place on Sat. Aug. 5th at 10PM and you ought to nab your tickets at $15 a pop here.

Pick of the Day: Aesthetical Relations with Christina Catherine Martinez (in LA) 11/11

It’s not often that you get to live comedy at one of LA’s premier theaters for live performance, REDCAT. Then again, dynamic and innovative comedians of the likes of Christina Catherine Martinez are similarly a rare breed.

That’s why Christina’s postmodernist shake-up of the tried and true variety talk show, Aesthetical Relations, is coming to REDCAT this November, giving her the stage she deserves after wowing audiences with her joyfully riotous blend of stand-up, clowning, and art criticism in and around and beyond LA to great acclaim for years now.

Fri. Nov. 11th ought to be a very special night, especially around 8:30PM when this edition of Aesthetical Relations comes to pass. So, with that in mind, go get your tickets, on sale now for $25, right here ASAP.

Pick of the Day: The Jesse Miller Talk Show (in LA) 12/11

News

To this very day, Andre Hyland‘s creation, The Jesse Miller Talk Show, remains as one of the craziest and best talk shows we’ve ever seen (that includes any of the ones on TV all the way to ones that happen in someone’s apartment).

For the unfamiliar, The Jesse Miller Talk Show puts one Jesse Miller at the monster truck driver’s seat of his very own talk show that blends the outrageous energy of self-proclaimed media mogul that you might find outside of many 7-11s in LA that celebrities may have frequented with a seemingly unlimited capacity for pop culture knowledge and wordplay. Also, there’s heavy guitar shredding from Darryl (Paul Oyen) and plenty of PDA with his sidekick/boo Tanya (Anna Lee Lawson).

In short, it’s a good time and we’re glad to see that it’ll be going back up, in-person, on this side of the pandemic at Dynasty Typewriter on Sat. Dec. 11th at 10PM PT. So far, Jesse will be putting his dazzling interview tricks on display for Noël Wells, Mitra Jouhari, and a special surprise guest.

Tickets are $15 right now, so you best go snatch them up right now.

Sam Jay Is Getting Her Own HBO Late Night Talk Show

September 29, 2020
News
hbo max, sam jay, talk show

We’ve said it before in so many ways and it bears repeating again: When it comes to voices in comedy being truly unfiltered, brash, honest, and hilarious, Sam Jay is one of the best around right now. So, we think it’s a great move on HBO’s part to give Sam her very own half-hour late night talk show where she’ll get to do her take on the world.

Per the premium cable network’s announcement today:

The UNTITLED SAM JAY PROJECT will be a weekly 30-minute late-night show in which Sam tackles the top trending topics in urban and world culture for the week – including race, politics, sexual identity, science, celebrity, religion, and more – and examines them from her unique and subversive point of view.

One can see from Sam’s Netflix special 3 in the Morning or even a recent appearance on Why Won’t You Date Me? with Nicole Byer that Jay’s show/perspective is something very special and unlike anything that has been or is currently on  in late night.

Look for Sam’s show to premiere next year on HBO and HBO Max.

We were truly taken by Christina Catherine Martinez’s first foray into the IG Live space with her comedy/art talk/experimental comedy show Aesthetical Relations. We’re still taken by the audacity of the opening, which has us still ruminating on its audacity and how she cleverly pushed the boundaries of the aesthetics of the Gram (in addition to have all sorts of weird and wonderful treats with offbeat characters, high art/literary folks, and niche, but thoroughly satisfying bits).

So, we wouldn’t dare let ourselves go without specifically telling you about the very next Aesthetical Relations that Christina would be exhibiting, which just happens to be this Thursday, Aug. 6th at 7PM PT/10PM ET over @xtina_catherine on Instagram. Very, very special guests include the hysterical Jamel Johnson (who possibly made the first legit comedy special in quarantine), Dr. Angelo Castoria, and clowning/character sensation Courtney Pauroso.

Until that time, please enjoy Christina’s personal announcement for this edition of Aesthetical Relations.

Please Enjoy Christina Catherine Martinez’s “Aesthetical Relations” That Really Pushes the Limits of IG Live

News

Leave it to Christina Catherine Martinez, comedian, author, and professional art critic, to take the incredibly limiting medium of Instagram Live and turn into something wild, whimsical, dangerous, funny, and genuinely illuminating (like she tends to do with her comedy when done live in person).

Martinez did the first virtual edition of her normally recurring art comedy talk show Aesthetical Relations (with guests Kat Toledo, Jamie Loftus, and Angella d’Avignon) made something truly special. In fact, we may go so far as to say that it might have one of the best openings (there’s an unmistakable indie/cinematic feel to it) to an IG Live show that we’ve ever seen.

So, without any more delay, please enjoy this first virtual edition of Aesthetical Relations here (pt. 1) and here (pt. 2)

Mary Beth Barone’s daring PSA/talk show Drag His Ass: a f*ckboy treatment program about f*ckboys and how to get off of them (both literally and figuratively) was one of our favorite things that we saw in 2019.

So, naturally, we’re going to tell you to go to the latest edition of Drag His Ass, which is perfectly right before Valentine’s Day. Get tickets here.

First off, you should be excited that Maria Bamford will be having a brand new show. Maria is unequivocally one of the all time funniest people and also one of the comedians that approaches and normalizes mental health in such a beautiful way.

Her new series, What’s Your Ailment?!, that will be coming to streaming platform Topic will feature Bamford talking to other performers about mental health and we’re willing to be it’ll be some of the best conversations about anxiety, depression, etc. etc. that will be enlightening and riveting and have some undeniable, out-of-left field laughs.

What’s Your Ailment?! with Maria Bamford will be perfect palate cleanser after Christmas as it premieres on Dec. 26th on Topic.

Comedy Central Developing Blake Griffin Talk Show Where Guests Will Go One-on-One with Griffin in a Competition of Their Choice

Depending on who the guests are and what challenges they put renowned basketball star Blake Griffin through, this might be something here.

A panel interview during an archery contest? a game of Flip Cup? Minature golf? The potential for some genuine chaos in these cases could be very fun.

One on One with Blake Griffin is being developed as a pilot, but it’s one of the bigger swings Comedy Central has taken in awhile and we’re intrigued.

The driver/DJ/Hollywood insider/paranormal conduit Dicker Troy (Johnny Pemberton) is getting a shot to impart his blue collar mysticism via a live talk show. He’s got a great panel with Will Miles, David Gborie, Laci Mosley, and Chris Charpentier and, without a doubt, a bunch of surprises underneath those multiple rolled up sleeves.

Pretty great first holiday gift for the first of December, no?

So, you best go get your tickets for Dicker’s Talk Show at the Satellite this Sun. here.

Disney+ Will Have a Talk Show Hosted by a Blue Alien Puppet “Earth to Ned”  from Jim Henson Co.

Disney+ Will Have a Talk Show Hosted by a Blue Alien Puppet “Earth to Ned”  from Jim Henson Co.

We so enjoyed No, You Shut Up! with Paul F. Tompkins, we were curious when puppets mixing it up with real folks would pop up once again some sort of talk format.

Disney+ is taking up that niche by doing their version of a talk show with a blue alien puppet (that looks much much friendlier than another blue alien talk show host Gorburger). The alien is one that becomes obsessed with pop culture and, thus, interviews actual celebrity guests.

While all of that is well and good and the combo of puppets and real people is always fun, we’re truly excited to know that the one and only Eliza Skinner is the head writer and co-EP of this new Disney+ talk show, Earth to Ned. There is a lot of ways this show could go, but we feel pretty good about Earth to Ned being in the trusty hands of both Eliza and the Jim Henson Co.

VICELAND Is Taking Another Crack at Having a Talk Show with Danny Brown and “Danny’s House”

VICE and VICELAND are dead set on figuring this talk show/late night thing out.

They had Desus & Mero, now enjoying their time at Showtime, and then they tried a wild experiment of a two-hour, completely live variety talk show with four hosts called Vice Live. That was unfortunately very, very short lived.

Now, their latest take on talk show will come from rapper Danny Brown in something that seems more akin to The Eric Andre Show, but slightly more grounded (as it happens at “Danny’s House” and the guests seem to be more in on what’s happening).

That said, it still looks more crazy and different than most other things in the late night/talk show world (a thing we’re always game for). See for yourself in the trailer for Danny’s House. If you’re into it, you’ll want to catch the series premiere this week on Aug. 14th at VICELAND.

Having seen both live in the last year and immensely enjoying it here in LA, you should be highly curious, like we are, to see what these shows will end up being.

Netflix Orders Hasan Minhaj Weekly Talk Show for 32 Episodes

First off, though we think it’s long overdue, we’re so glad to finally see that Hasan Minhaj has his own show. We honestly thought that Minhaj was going to get the gig of hosting of The Daily Show if Comedy Central was going to promote internally because of how passionate and magnetic his persona is.

So, as far as late night/talk shows go, Netflix now has/will have series from David Letterman, Joel McHale, Michelle Wolf, and Hasan Minhaj. That’s a hell of a line-up that stacks up pretty well against any other network’s late night/talk show roster.
