Pick of the Day: Kimberly Clark Taping (in LA) 4/19

March 18, 2024
News
aspecialthing, ast records, kimberly clark, live taping, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

Here’s another taping that’s long overdue. Kimberly Clark has long since been a treasure of the LA comedy scene as a comedian that can always be counted out for good, calming spirits and even better punchlines. We’ve actually known and loved Clark for all the time that we’ve ran TCB and it’s kind of a thrill that she’s finally getting to put her jokes on wax.

Come Friday, April 19th, Clark will be doing a full length album taping for the venerable aspecialthing Records at Lyric Hyperion. You’ve got two chances to be part of the recording with an early 7:30PM and a late 9:30PM show. Clark will be joined by other faves of ours, Paul Danke, Clark Jones, and Maggie Maye.

Tickets are only $5 for this taping, so just go get a pair already! Do so here.

Pick of the Day: Rachel Pegram Taping (in LA) 4/11

March 14, 2024
News
live taping, los angeles comedy, rachel pegram, stand up comedy

If you’re the sort of comedy fan/nerd/aficionado that wishes to catch the not so distant future’s next big stars, you would hopefully be well aware that, by the fact that you’re reading this right now, plenty such opportunities exist in LA and NYC on a nightly basis.

With that in mind, if you’re in and around LA on Thurs. Apr. 11th, you’re definitely going to want to be at Bar Covell, specifically in the side room to catch one Rachel Pegram tape an album live. Pegram is a gem in the LA scene with her a level of affability and charm that makes you feel like you’re a good friend giggling over the best gossip (even though it’s honed material).

Pegram is doing an early and late show, 7PM & 9PM, that Thursday and tickets are only $5. Best go get them before they sell out right here.

Pick of the Day: Don’t Tell Tapings (in NYC) 3/1 & 3/2

February 28, 2024
News
don't tell comedy, live taping, nyc comedy

Don’t Tell Comedy, the quiet comedy pop-up turned international comedy pop-up sensation (so much so that they’ve kind of become the premier maker of short feature stand-up sets for folks to watch on a regular basis (versus more traditional places like Comedy Central and Netflix or whenever it happens on late night).

Just take a gander for yourself at their archives on their YouTube channel here and you’ll see what we’re talking about and why comedians use these Don’t Tell sets as credits now.

DTC is actually going to their next round of tapings in an abandoned and/or cool hideaway somewhere in Chelsea/Manhattan in NYC this weekend on Fri. Mar. 1st & Mar. 2nd at 7PM ET & 9:30PM ET. Tickets are $31.99 and you can and should go get ’em here before they sell out.

Pick of the Day: Hannah Einbinder: El Rey Taping (in LA) 4/20 (RESCHEDULED from 3/17)

February 6, 2024
News
hannah einbinder, live taping, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy, sunset strip, taping, the roxy

Ever since we peeped Hannah Einbinder start forming the shape of her grand, conceptual comedic ideas on stage, we had a quite the hunch that she was on a path to something pretty damn great.

Did we know she would be an award winning prestige comedy playing opposite the renowned Jean Smart? Well, not exactly, but we can’t say that we’re entirely surprised that Hannah is rising to the occasion. Einbinder’s ornately offbeat sense of humor on stage, with all of its carefully arranged bells and whistles, is something to really behold. So, Hannah being on the precipice of taping her very first hour special is absolutely a happening that we thoroughly think you shouldn’t miss if you’re in and around LA on Mar. 17th. right at the heart of the billboard river that is The Sunset Strip at The Roxy. on 4/20 (because those damn atmospheric rivers have to cause a bunch of property damage) on The Miracle Mile for LA’s lauded, gorgeous El Rey Theatre (has one of the dreamiest marquees in the Greater LA Area).

There will be an early and late show at 7PM and 10PM respectively with tickets being $35 a pop. We have no doubt that this will sell out probably in a jif. So get your tix here.

Pick of the Day: Don’t Tell Comedy NYC Tapings (in NYC) 10/6 & 10/7

September 29, 2023
News
don't tell comedy, live taping, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

Though the name says otherwise, Don’t Tell Comedy is a nationwide (and, actually, an international) phenomenon. This year alone, they’ll have done thousands of pop up comedy shows in over 140 cities, wherever they may be a weird, cool, non-traditional comedy venue and strong comedy scene might be.

The strength of that brand has lead them into now having taped sets presented on Don’t Tell’s YouTube channel that rival any that you’d see on TV or streaming services. If you’re in the NYC area next week, you could actually be part of the latest round of Don’t Tell Comedy tapings, set for Fri. Oct. 6th in Williamsburg/Brooklyn and Chelsea/Manhattan on Sat. Oct. 7th. You could actually make it a comedy taping hat trick as Comedy Central’s tapings are on 10/5.

Tickets are only $25 and, per the Don’t Tell Comedy protocol, the line-up is secret and exact location is revealed day of after purchase of your ticket. Go get them here before they sell out.

Pick of the Day: Jay Larson Live Taping (in LA) 9/17

September 7, 2023
News
comedy store, jay larson, live taping, los angeles comedy, stand up

One of the keenest observers and storytellers in comedy is, without a doubt, Jay Larson. To this day, he still has one of the most popular sets on Conan and, for our money, has some of the best crowd work questions. Larson has been the type of comedian for several years now, making his performances a delight whenever/wherever they happen.

With that in mind, Larson is doing a very special taping of his “signature bits” in the intimate space of the Belly Room at The Comedy Store. Don’t miss Jay essentially doing his “greatest hits” once more on Sun. Sept. 17th at 7PM & 9:30PM. Tickets are only $10 (+ 2 drink min.). Go get them here and here, respectively.

Pick of the Day: James Adomian Stand Up Comedy Special Taping (in LA) 9/14

August 17, 2023
News
800 pound gorilla, comedy album, james adomian, live taping, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy, the elysian

It has been well over a decade since the release of the brilliant comedy album Low Hanging Fruit from the always astounding James Adomian. Though we’d like to have a new hour from Adomian to binge and listen on repeat much sooner, James has been, over the last 11 years, a little busy touring as Bernie Sanders opposite Anthony Atamanuik’s Trump, and playing several voices on your favorite adult animated series, doing one of the best hidden gem podcasts The Underculture, amongst several other things.

Thankfully, this Adomian drought will come to an end as James is set to tape his very first stand-up comedy special and brand new hour next month for 800 Pound Gorilla Media. At The Elysian on Thurs. Sept. 14th, James will give those in attendance the meticulously honed collection of hysterical, incisive socio-political coupled with the most spot-on impressions you’ve ever heard or seen.

Tickets are only $15 right now for either 7:30PM or 9:30PM tapings and you best go get tickets here now.

Pick of the Day: Jess Salomon: Sad Witch Album Recording (in NYC) 6/29

June 20, 2023
News
album recording, jess salomon, live taping, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

One of the most thoughtful (and, of course, undeniably funny) voices in NYC comedy belongs to one, Jess Salomon. Hailing from both Canada and a career as a U.N. war crimes lawyer, Salomon has a knack for keeping a cheery vibe while very cleverly satirizing the world around her. She has become a staple of the NYC comedy scene and a true joy wherever else she plays (certainly, a bright spot on any line-up we’ve seen her in whenever she’s in LA).

Jess will be taping a full length comedy album next week, Sad Witch, at the revered Brooklyn comedy theater, Union Hall, and you really ought to be in attendance for what should be a damn fine hour of stand-up comedy. There are two shows on Thurs. Jun. 29th, 7:30PM & 10PM, with an opening set from DeAnne Smith. Tickets are only $11.55 and you best go get them here and here, respectively right now.

Pick of the Day: Dan St. Germain Taping (in NYC) 6/1

May 19, 2023
News
brooklyn, dan st germain, live taping, nyc comedy, stand up comedy

As we’re in the thick of 2023, many a plans laid out for 2020 are now coming into fruition. That includes a bunch of folks’ solo shows that are Scotland-bound for the Edinburgh Fringe Festivals as well as plenty of tapings for specials and albums that had to be put on hold due to COVID-19.

NYC comedy’s Dan St. Germain had two delightful hours of comedy, “no real winners here” and “Bad at the Good Times”, out before the pandemic and 2020 seemed probably about a ripe time for a new one, perhaps an hour special. Well, we’ll just fast forward to here in 2023 because you’re well aware of what happened in the mean time. St. Germain’s seasoned, classical style stand-up with rollicking, punchline-filled commentary on the world around him is going to be captured in his first hour special next month at Old Man Hustle/BKLYN Comedy Club.

You’ve got two chances to catch St. Germain bring the heat on Thurs. Jun. 1st at 8PM or at the late show at 10PM. Tickets are $20 and you can (and should) go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Maria Bamford Special Taping (near LA) 5/13

May 5, 2023
News
live taping, los angeles comedy, maria bamford, public displays of altadena, stand up comedy

It should be no secret, at this point, that Maria Bamford is one of our all time favorite comedians and any time she’s playing anywhere is an opportunity you really shouldn’t pass up. This is doubly true when it comes to her taping a brand new comedy special.

As it would turn out, Maria is taping her very first special next week and, in true Maria form, she is taping at her neighborhood venue, the burgeoning experimental micro-theater, Public Displays of Altadena. This shouldn’t come as surprise as Maria has taped previous specials in her home and at bookstores.

This latest taping is set for Sat. May 13th at 10:30AM (Maria is one of the few comedians on the planet that can pull off live stand-up comedy in the AM). Tickets are currently sold out (seating is very, very limited at a micro-theater after all), but you should really follow @pda_space and @mariabamfordcomedy on IG to see if any tickets are released or seats open up.

Pick of the Day: Shane Torres Live Special Taping (in NYC) 3/18

March 9, 2023
News
comedy taping, live taping, nyc comedy, shane torres

Shane Torres is and has been one of the funniest comics working out of NYC. Just watch him do an entire late night set on (and consequently have the definitive bit about) Guy Fieri.

With that in mind on top of the fantastic album Established 1981, it’s a bit wild that Shane hasn’t done an hour  special yet. Thanks to the shirtless wonder that is Bert Kreischer, Shane is going to change that and tape his very first hour next week.

Specifically, Shane is doing two tapings, 7PM & 10PM on Sat. Mar. 18th, at The Sultan Room in Brooklyn with tickets going for $25.14 a pop. You can (and very much should) get them here and here respectively.

Pick of the Day: Atsuko Okatsuka HBO Taping (in NYC) 10/11

September 12, 2022
News
atsuko okatsuka, brooklyn, elsewhere, hbo, live taping, nyc comedy

2020 was supposed to be the year that Atsuko Okatsuka rose into being the household name she so deserves. All this time and several global catastrophes later, Atsuko is back on track with taping her very first HBO comedy special next month.

Taking over the uber-hip venue Elsewhere in Brooklyn on the night of Tues. Oct. 11th, Okatsuka will bring her tireless charm, sharply drawn observations from her gorgeously unique perspective, and, of course, her moves to two shows that you really should not whatsoever if you’re in the NYC area a month from now.

Tickets are going for $32.55 with pre-sale promo code: GRANDMA here. Go get ’em now.

Pick of the Day: Nick Youssef’s First Special Taping (in NYC) 9/27

August 25, 2022
News
live taping, manhattan, nick youssef, nyc comedy, stand up comedy, west village, zinc bar

Stand-up comedy is pretty much back on pace with where it was in 2019, which means there are plenty of live tapings for specials and albums for you to attend. In fact, there are so many that you’ve very likely to choose which ones you ought to make it out to.

In NYC, you really ought to not miss Nick Youssef taping anything, much less his very first special, even much more less a special being taped at an extremely swanky spot in the West Village. Youssef was a stalwart part of LA’s scene for the longest time and has very impressively carved the same spot for himself in NYC’s even more crowded field of comics.

Following a handful of very good albums, Nick is indeed doing his very first comedy special, completely crowdfunded, on Tues. Sept. 27th at what is normally a very classy jazz bar, Zinc Bar, which should be the added bonus of seeing Youssef present his finely carved, astutely observed comedy wares.

There will be two tapings, 8PM & 10PM, and tickets are $25 and you can (and should) go get them here right now.

Pick of the Day: Danny Jolles Films His Second Comedy Special (in LA) 6/4

May 31, 2022
News
danny jolles, dynasty typewriter, live taping, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

It was a rarity, but there were really great comedy specials that came out during the thick of the pandemic. One of those specials was Danny Jolles’ 6 Parts. It wasn’t only us that was saying that. Both Paste Magazine and The New York Times picked it as one of their favorite specials last year.

So, with that in mind, we don’t think you will want to miss Jolles and Don’t Tell Comedy doing another hour special this weekend on Sat. Jun. 4th. This time, Danny will be getting to sharing his wonderfully crafted comedy offerings to us all on a proper stage, the grand Dynasty Typewriter (as opposed to a surf shop, art store, etc.).

There will be an early and late show, at 7PM PT & 9:30PM, and tickets are going for $15 right now. Go get them ASAP here and here, respectively.

Pick of the Day: Nore Davis’ 5th Stand-Up Album Recording (in NYC) 1/29

December 21, 2021
News
album recording, brooklyn, live taping, nore davis, ny comedy, stand up comedy, union hall

If there was ever an uplifting voice of comfort in comedy that also kept it completely honest and vulnerable and, most importantly, so very hysterically funny, there would be a very tiny short list with the name Nore Davis clearly on it.

For the dozens of times we’ve seen him live and all the hours/specials/albums we’ve heard/seen, Nore has been a constant in offering a rare hopeful outlook threaded through his deftly crafted material and undeniable charm and finesse on stage. His comedic artistry even shined through on Zoom, the rare feat during this time of COVID-19, and he made a thoroughly enjoyable album via Zoom.

So, that said, you shouldn’t miss his latest album recording (it’ll be his fifth one) at Union Hall on Sat. Jan. 29th at 7:30PM ET & 10PM ET when, one can only hope, the current Omicron surge will have subsided. Get tickets for $20 here.

Pick of the Day: Alice Hamilton Taping (in LA) 12/8

December 6, 2021
News
alice hamilton, live taping, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

We are grateful that for a good portion of 2021 that we’ve gotten to actually watch enough good ol’ live, in-person comedy that we’ve had a chance to see and discover comedy folks that we haven’t had a chance to ever see. It should come as no surprise, but that’s one of absolute favorite things to do and part of the reason why we watch several hours of live comedy every night of the week.

One of the folks that we delightfully came across this year was Alice Hamilton. Whether it was an overly hip taco spot or the rooftop lounge of a chic hotel, we enjoyed Alice’s very sharp writing and unshakeable presence on stage. Thankfully, more and more folks are seeing what we’re seeing around town and Alice gets up quite a bit.

With that in mind, Alice is doing a taping this Wednesday at 8:30PM PT at the Fourth Wall Comedy Cafe in Thai Town where you can see her do an extended set (which is always such a rare thing in town). She’ll be joined by Miranda Meadows and JP Puthenveetil opening the show, which will be FREE.

Don’t miss this chance to see Alice’s marvelous comedy stylings (especially since space is limited). RSVP here.

Natalie Palamides has really pushed herself to new thrilling and hysterical territory with her solo show, NATE. Audiences and critics around the world (including some of the most prestigious comedy and performance festivals) agree in being awestruck with Natalie’s work here where she satirizes masculinity in such a daring way.

Also, one Amy Poehler feels similarly and, as such, will be presenting NATE to the world as a live comedy special that will tape next month, Fri. Aug. 9th, at the Los Angeles Theatre Center in DTLA. There will be two tapings, 7PM and 9:30PM, and you can (and very, very much should) RSVP for FREE tickets here.
