Pick of the Day: The Frogtown Show (in LA) 1/22

January 14, 2022

Inch by inch, show by show, there are things in live comedy that are indeed happening after the bummer of the holiday break and the quiet nightmare that Omicron has been. Despite more cancelations and postponements happening and more inevitably coming (Largo has continued to stay dark beyond just their initial two weeks of postponements), you might be delighted to know that the beloved outdoor stand-up show Frogtown Show @ Spoke Bicycle Cafe is returning back to it’s bi-weekly (2nd & 4th Saturdays) schedule this month.

On Sat. Jan. 22nd at 7:30PM PT, the magical patio of Spoke Bicycle Cafe will host hosts Erin Dewey Lennox, Emily Maya Mills, and Jared Goldstein as well as their very first 2022 line-up, which is stacked per usual. They’ve got Jermaine Fowler, Mitra Jouhari, Johnny Pemberton, Michael Joyce, and Noah Gardenswartz.

Tickets start at $5 (plus 2 item min.) and you really ought to snag them up before they sell out here.

Pick of the Day: Johnny Pemberton (in LA) 12/22

News
johnny pemberton, los angeles comedy

One of the more dynamic performers that LA has known and loved is the comedic whirlwind that is Johnny Pemberton. Whether he’s wearing an oversized suit playing (if we remember correctly) a cruise ship comedian or donning a rat tail and a Southern accent to play teamster/DJ/mystic/Hollywood insider Dicker Troy or tying himself at one of a rope to Josh Fadem or just being his very own self on stage, Pemberton’s daring has had us hysterically laughing and gasping for over a decade now.

It’s just another thing we miss from the before times that is thankfully coming back, specifically next Wed. Dec. 22nd at the Yard Theater in East Hollywood at 7PM PT for Johnny’s Cool Fun Nice Hour. Don’t miss out on whatever Pemberton has dreamed up and is fearlessly going to put his all into on stage. Tickets are only $10 and you really ought to go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Johnny Pemberton at Nowhere 6/8

News
johnny pemberton, nowhere comedy, stand up

Johnny Pemberton is one of the most dynamic comedians to watch, no matter what he’s doing or where he’s performing. His wild characters and his absurdist stand-up were and remain one of our favorite things to watch.

In fact, we always will hold Kiss My Ass with Dicker Troy (a mystical truck driver/DJ played by Johnny Pemberton) and Josh Fadem at The Satellite LA as one of our all time favorite shows to go to.

Pemberton is set to do a virtual headlining gig at Nowhere Comedy Club next month and we have no doubt that he’s going to make something special out of the virtual comedy space.

Johnny Pemberton at Nowhere is set to go live at Tues. Jun. 8th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets are $10 for earlybirds and $15 for GA and you can (and should) go get them here.

The driver/DJ/Hollywood insider/paranormal conduit Dicker Troy (Johnny Pemberton) is getting a shot to impart his blue collar mysticism via a live talk show. He’s got a great panel with Will Miles, David Gborie, Laci Mosley, and Chris Charpentier and, without a doubt, a bunch of surprises underneath those multiple rolled up sleeves.

Pretty great first holiday gift for the first of December, no?

So, you best go get your tickets for Dicker’s Talk Show at the Satellite this Sun. here.

So, Matt O’Brien has devised a way to have comedians act out a scene with a green screen, then finish a video with a background suggested by the audience before that comedian finishes a normal stand-up set.

For us, it sounds like some beautiful chaos and something you should definitely check out (especially with a great line-up of Julia Hladkowicz, Johnny Pemberton, JB Ball, Andrew Johnston, Steph Tolev).

This madness will be called Green with Matt O’Brien and happening on Fri., Nov. 22nd at 10:30PM at UCB Sunset. Tickets are $7 and you ought to go get them here.

Prankster comedian extraordinaire Brendon Walsh is getting back in touch with his prankster roots with a new monthly show that will feature both stand-up as well as Brendon prank calling people live (quite a feat to do these days if you can pull it off).

Called Afternoon Delight, you’ll get to enjoy such hijinks at 4PM on a Sunday at Silverlake’s The Friend, all for FREE. This first Afternoon Delight on this Sunday should be a damn good time with Johnny Pemberton, Richard Bain, Jamar Neighbors, and Lindsay Adams.

Josh Fadem and Johnny Pemberton have collaborated for some of the most daring, silly, and wonderful comedy for many years over now. From being tied to each other by a rope and trying to perform at the same time to Johnny donning his now cult favorite Dicker Troy character, Josh and Johnny’s shows are always worth showing up for (even if you’re not quite sure what’s going to happen).

Thus, Josh and Dicker Break Bread, a “staged theatre production” (spun off from their monthly showcase where Josh and Dicker host many stand-ups and comedy folks while they do whatever magical riffing they do) is yet another thing where we’re not exactly sure what the duo have up their collective sleeves, but are fully on board for whatever comedic head trip that they’re going to take us on.

It’s set for this Labor Day weekend at Silverlake’s Satellite LA and you ought to get your tickets here.

Johnny Pemberton, for as long as we’ve known him, has been one of the most dynamic, daring comedians around. We’re never quite sure what he’s going to do, but that’s kind of the thrill that Johnny brings with whatever he’s doing whether playing his vast array of characters, when he’s doing stand-up, etc.

So, suffice it to say that you should go to Johnny’s live taping next week at the Lyric Hyperion. It’s only $5 and there’s an early and late show. Get details and tickets here.

Please Get Johnny Pemberton’s “Recorded For Quality Assurance”, An Entire Album of Trippy Prank Calls

The act of actually calling people on the phone is something that happens less and less and, consequently, it’s something that’s less expected these days.

So, that might just be the perfect setting for a set of prank calls, especially for someone as marvelously subversive as Johnny Pemberton.

Indeed, Recorded For Quality Assurance is indeed a collection of prank calls that comes as a surprise from as many angles as possible. Johnny blindsides his callers, gets blindsided by a few of the callers, and even, in a way, blindsides you, the listener with the help of a few audio tricks up Pemberton’s sleeve. Also, it’s a lot of fun to know that he apparently calls all sorts of folks including a strip club manager to a customer service rep at Halliburton.

It’s a great listen and a reminder that calling people is a thing we can (and maybe should) still do in 2018.

Recorded For Quality Assurance is now available on iTunes, Spotify, and on cassette via SBI Press.

Toasty is half real cocktail party, half fictional cocktail party with a bunch of characters giving toasts from folks that are, shall we say, not quite well-adjusted. It also happens to be one of our, hands down, favorite things ever.

The line-up would be stellar for a normal comedy show, but, as this is a slightly otherworldly show, it’s even more special.

Please get your tickets as soon as you can because space is limited. They’re $20 (includes free drinks and snacks) and you can get them here.

Josh Fadem & Dicker Troy (Johnny Pemberton as a truck driver/DJ/wiseman with a modulated voice) is one of the funniest things going on in LA right now (you can catch them at the end of the month in LA at The Satellite).

So, if you’re in SF, Portland, Vancouver or Seattle in February, do not miss a show that’s equal parts whimsy, chaos, tomfoolery, alternate dimensions, slapstick, and jokes.

In our opinion, one of the best and craziest iterations of the late night talk show format is The Jesse Miller Talk Show.

Imagine some wild dreamer from Cincinnati who seems to be aspiring to be Kenny Powers, but also has a boundless amount of pop culture knowledge and ability to make wordplay hosting a talk show and you’ll get some idea of the fun chaos that is going on with Jesse Miller (Andre Hyland).

In addition to his crew of his one man shredding house band Darryl and his girl Tanya, guests for this round include Johnny Pemberton and Kate Berlant.

Please get your tickets for The Jesse Miller Talk Show this Friday, Dec. 9th at 10PM at The Hollywood Improv here.

Watch “Son of Zorn” Cast and Creators Explain the Show (and Go Off the Rails Doing So) Before Tonight’s Special Preview

Tonight, the live-action-animation hybrid Son of Zorn will follow a NFL doubleheader on Fox around 8PM and give you a taste of what the clashing of mythical and magical Zephyrian universe and the suburbs of Orange County is like.

Before that, you should really watch the creators and cast of Son of Zorn in a panel discussion of the series for this season. It not only gives a better sense of how the show works, but the panel really got fun, silly, and loose.

Again, the special preview of Son of Zorn is scheduled for 8PM on Fox, with exception to overtime during the NFL doubleheader.

Fox Unveils Trailers for “Son of Zorn”, “Making History”, and “The Mick”

It looks like Phil Lord and Chris Miller are really rubbing off on Fox in the best way possible.

Two of the new comedies that were announced at Fox’s Upfronts presentation have Lord and Miller’s hands involved and those just happen to be two very enticing high concept comedies.

One, Son of Zorn, puts an animated He-Man type, voiced by Jason Sudeikis, into the 9-5 grind in the real world with Johnny Pemberton as a son, Cheryl Hines as an ex-wife, Tim Meadows as the ex-wife’s fiance, and Artemis Pebdani as his boss. Here’s the trailer.

The other involves Adam Pally as someone who has a time machine and has abused it. Thus, he enlists an accomplished history professor played by Yassir Lester to fix something he might have screwed up in the American Revolution. Here’s the trailer for Making History.

Both make Fox’s live action comedy line-up have a certain high concept sheen already laid out by Last Man on Earth and Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

To round out the new series, Fox has a show that is basically a Sweet Dee from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia standalone series. See for yourself in the trailer for The Mick starring Sweet Dee herself, Kaitlin Olson.

All in all, Fox has a lot of promise with this trio.
