Pick of the Day: Abolish Everything: Tournament of Champions (in NYC) 6/1

May 8, 2024
News
abolish everything, annie rauwerda, chandler dean, debate, game show, nyc comedy

In such divisive times, some great comedy gold can be mined from leaning in even further to those divisions (well, when they’re kind of pretty absurd). Hence, Chandler Dean’s Abolish Everything is a rollicking ride of passionately pleaded cases to abolish, as the title suggests, anything and everything as decided by the finely curated line-up of comics on the bill.

It’s been such a hoot, that Dean is going to have an Abolish Everything Tournament of Champions featuring the comics that are the very best at talking up the ridiculous things that should be scorched from this world. On June 1st, at Caveat in LES, the following Abolish Everything heavy hitters will go toe-to-toe:

Henry Block
Augusta Chapman
Sarah Gruen
Amy Muller
Annie Rauwerda
Kathryn Margaret Rose
Cara Michelle Smith
Marielle Sarmiento
Jason Siegel
Felipe Torres Medina

Tickets are $20 right now, but $25 day of. You can also access a livestream for $10. Get more info and tix right here right now.

Pick of the Day: Don’t Break (at NYCF) 11/4

November 2, 2023
News
danny catlow, david brown, don't break, game show, ny comedy festival

We have no doubt in our mind that one of the most talked about events at the New York Comedy Festival, when all is said and done, will be the demented comedy game show hosted/refereed by Danny Catlow and David Brown, Don’t Break.

A select of very funny comedians, going head-to-head, are saddled with one simple task as stated in the very name of the show. While that premise is as simple as it gets, Catlow and Brown run their game not unlike something out of Squid Game by enforcing harsh judgments and introducing more and more rules/challenges as to prevent any player/comedian from just sitting in a corner and not talking to anyone the whole time.

It’s such devilish fun and with a line-up of Marie Faustin, Grace Kuhlenschmidt, Richard Perez, Jo Firestone, Sabrina Wu, Joe Castle Baker, Rachel Kaly, Kate O’Connor, and Wyatt Fair, the competition will be viciously hysterical.

Make sure you set aside plans for Sat. Nov. 4th at 9:30PM to be at Littlefield and get tickets right now at $15.54 a pop.

Pick of the Day: Meme Fighter LIVE! (in LA) 9/23

News
Dylan Adler, game show, ify nwadiwe, jenny zigrino, los angeles comedy, lyric hyperion, meme fighter, nick gligor

As it stands now, there is no undisputed sort of King of Iron Fist Tournament for comedy, but, we here at The Comedy Bureau have partnered with brand spankin’ new app, Meme Fighter, to get a bit closer to such a thing with the aptly named Meme Fighter LIVE!

As you might surmise, we pit some of the very best comedians (and you know we mean that when WE here at TCB say it) versus each other with memes as the only “weapon” at their disposal. Meme Fighter Live! will decide comedy supremacy through the shrewdest, most hysterical manipulation of the language of the Internet.

For this inaugural edition, we have the esteemed “fighters” of Dylan Adler, Ify Nwadiwe & Jenny Zigrino, all undeniable comedic forces in their own rights under the presiding of one of the best hosts around, Nick Gligor. They will all gather at Lyric Hyperion on Sat. Sept. 23rd at 9:30PM and for $15 you can get a front row seat to see who is the cleverest and funniest of them all (seriously, we’re part of the running the show, which means it’ll be a damn good time).

Get tickets right now right here.

Pick of the Day: Self Help Me w/ Jenny Yang: A Competitive Self Care Comedy Show (in LA) 5/21

May 18, 2023
News
daniel webb, desmond chiam, dr ally powell hicks, game show, health and wellness, jenny yang, joel kim booster, los angeles comedy, nicole byer, ron fnches, self help

With the conversation surrounding mental health being more prominent than ever in human history, one should wonder about how much they know about health and wellness (and not just what you’ve seen or heard of on Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop).

Lucky for us all, LA comedy’s Jenny Yang has created a self-help game show, Self Help Me, to test such niche knowledge and really dive into what’s really behind the latest trends in self-help (as well as create content through specialized anxieties). LA comedy scene favorites and wellness experts alike will face off and Yang is assembling quite the field of competitors including Nicole Byer, Joel Kim Booster, Ron Funches, Daniel Webb, Dr. Ally Powell-Hicks, and Desmond Chiam.

This round of Self Help Me is set for Sun. May 21st at 4PM @ Dynasty Typewriter. Tickets are $20 and you really ought to help yourself and go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Why Would You Ask Me That? with Martin Urbano (in NYC) 5/31

May 1, 2023
News
brooklyn, game show, littlefield, martin urbano, nyc comedy

Throughout quarantine, one Martin Urbano found that he had a knack for hosting offbeat, darkly comedic game shows. Who Wants $2.69? was born out of a need to do comedy virtually, but that was something outside of stand-up, Urbano’s usual bread and butter. The perfectly named game show found quite the fan base through streaming weekly on Chris Gethard’s virtual comedy community Planet Scum and even had some live shows a couple of years ago.

Urbano has gotten back into the thick of stand-up since everything has reopened, but that doesn’t mean he’s giving up his impeccable skills as a game show host with a cheeky title. He is doing yet another game show with ironically “problematic trivia” that has a grand prize of $69 called Why Would You Ask Me That? with Martin Urbano. It should be a rollicking night of awkward answers from NYC comedy’s finest including Ariel Elias, Brittany Carney, Chris Gethard, Kenice Mobley, Steven Castillo, and even someone from the crowd in attendance.

Why Would You Ask Me That? is set for Wed. May 31st  at 8PM at Littlefield and tickets are $15.54. Best go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Super Dating Simulator-Love! at the Demon Hunter Agency (in LA) 2/16

February 6, 2023
News
alamo drafthouse, dtla, free show, game show, los angeles comedy, super dating simulator

What a perfect time of year for the return of one of our favorite romance based comedy shows in existence, Super Dating Simulator. Inspired by the craze for Japanese video game dating simulator, it’s an interactive, choose-your-own-adventure-ish, live-in-person comedy game show where comedic actors act at the will of the audience, while dressed up as outlandish anime-style characters.

In this particular edition that’s coming right after Valentine’s Day, Super Dating Simulator will be taking on a love story appropriate for our times, Love! at the Demon Hunter Agency, and will be bringing it to DTLA’s Alamo Drafthouse on Thurs. Feb. 16th at 8PM.

Best of all, the show is completely free to attend. Get more details and stay on top of Super Dating Simulator updates @superdatingsimulator on IG.

Pick of the Day: FUN by Design: The Interior Design Game Show (in NYC) 1/18

January 13, 2023
News
caveat, game show, interior design, laura fabius, nyc comedy

Though it’s not necessarily “peak TV” or considered part of this current Golden Age of television, shows about interior design are undoubtedly some of the most popular programming around. People may not talk about HGTV the way they do Severance or The Bear, but that doesn’t seem to stop The Property Brothers from being some of the most famous people on TV.

Taking note of all the above, NYC comedian and interior designer Laura Fabius has devised a way to bring in some more (and much needed) clever fun by crossing the worlds of interior design, comedy, and game shows into one very special night. Called FUN by design: The Interior Design Game Show, top flight designers will throw down to see how good they really are.

Oh yeah, they’ll be answering interior design questions as well!

FUN by design: The Interior Design Game Show will be happening at Caveat next Wed. Jan. 18th at 7PM ET (including a livestream). Tickets are $15 (and $10 for the livestream) and you really ought to snag ’em here.

Pick of the Day: DUTY FREE LIVE! UNAUTHORIZED IMPORTED GAME SHOWS! (in NYC) 10/21

October 4, 2022
News
british game show, caveat, christopher morucci, game show, grant mulitz, japanese game shows, kent morita, nyc comedy

While the good ol’ U.S. of A loves its game shows, Americans really seem to love how wild game shows can be from overseas. Takeshi’s Castle, Brain Wall, and more represent some of the more boundary pushing things that can happen in a game show and have proven addicting to audiences state side.

So, you really ought to not miss a chance to see some of the wilder game shows that have never found their way to the U.S. thanks to veteran comedy writers/performers Kent Morita, Grant Mulitz, and Christopher Morucci, otherwise known as The Game Show and Segments Research Club.

Together, they’re doing a very special evening they’re calling DUTY FREE LIVE! UNAUTHORIZZED IMPORTED GAME SHOWS!, which ought to be filled with truly hysterical twists and turns on Fri. Oct. 21st at 7PM ET (you’ll be able to live-stream it as well) at Lower East Side’s treasured comedy/performance haven, Caveat.

Tickets are $15 right now and only $10 for the livestream and you really ought to get them here.

Pick of the Day: GAYME SHOW! (in NYC) 6/12 & 7/22

May 9, 2022
News
bell house, brooklyn, dave mizzoni, game show, gayme show, matt rogers, ny comedy

It has been a long and winding road, though it absolutely shouldn’t be, for one of the absolutely, most delightful, hysterical comedy game shows around, GAYME SHOW! Before lockdown, they were ascending as they should be how fun hosts Dave Mizzoni and Matt Rogers made testing the extent, if any, of straight men’s queer knowledge and sensibilities. They got ordered to series, which they deserved, but it unfortunately happened at the now defunct Quibi (though you can and should watch it now for FREE on the Roku Channel).

Thankfully, both Dave and Matt have made it to this side of the pandemic as stellar as ever and are bringing back the classic, in-person experience of GAYME SHOW! to NYC at The Bell House. They’ve got two dates lined-up, Sun. Jun. 12th & Sat Jul. 22nd at 8PM ET. Though they don’t have the line-up yet, you really better buy your tickets up fast because they will absolutely sell out. Get tickets here and here respectively for $30 a pop.

Pick of the Day: Who Wants $2.69? with Martin Urbano

July 10, 2020
News
game show, martin urbano, planet scum

Chris Gethard’s virtual comedy network Planet Scum has added a brand new show to their weekly rotation. They now have a game show with the oh-so subversively clever Martin Urbano. Even in the name of the show, you can see how mischievous Urbano is as he’s calling it Who Wants $2.69?.

It’s a trivia show that Urbano will have comedy folks on as guests, but you can play along with the show from wherever you watching. Martin has always been so stellar with misdirection and wordplay in his comedy and that definitely figures into the trivia in Who Wants $2.69? that he’s personally come up with.

So, tune in and get into what will likely be one of the rambunctious trivia live-streams on the Internet on Mondays at planetscum.live at 5PM ET/8PM ET.

Pick of the Day: Whose Dime Is It Anyway? 6/14

June 12, 2020
News
game show, k town for all, trivia night

At this point, you’ve probably seen plenty of important infographics on so many different issues, especially as pertains to Los Angeles and it the proposed city budget and how currently ridiculous it is with a gigantic chunk going to the LAPD (even with Mayor Garcetti knocking off $150 million from their budget).

So, local org KTown For All has opted for some edutainment by making a game show called Whose Dime Is It Anyway? to further showcase the intricacies of how where Angeleno’s money goes for this city. It’s taking place this Sunday at 7PM PT/10PM ET and will be hosted by Sabrina Johnson.

To attend/participate, please RSVP here: tinyurl.com/KFA-trivia

Pick of the Day: PUNDERDOME 6/4

May 20, 2020
News
game show, livestream comedy, punderdome, puns

Sheer, silly absurdity is one of the best ways to get a respite from everything else right now. Puns are one of the best ways to get to that sort of absurd fun and PUNDERDOME, as you might guess from the name, is nothing but puns.

Going on for nearly a decade in NYC, PUNDERDOME was started “…by a ‘Rodney Dangerfield impersonator’ and his alleged daughter (Fred and comedian Jo Firestone)”. Now, they’re thankfully doing their first virtual live-stream show, which means it’ll get to expand its reach all over the country (and globe).

This first virtual PUNDERDOME is set for Thu. Jun. 4th at 4PM PT/7PM. RSVP w/donation to get the live-stream link here.

The United States Constitution, while providing the basis of our government, is one hell of a complex, at times, infuriating document that will be debated to the end of time.

As such, it’s a perfect gold mine for comedians to dissect, which is exactly what’s happening at What The Constitution Means to You next week! A great panel of comedians (including stand-ups, improvisers, writers, actors, etc.) will attempt to make sense of constitutional precedents and decisions in order to become a “Chief Justice of Comedy”, as presided by host Max Sosna-Spear, “SCOTUS Justice” Carrie Poppy, and actual UCLA law professor Adam Winkler.

Sound pretty neat? Sure does. So, go get your tickets right now right here.

Since we started things at TCB, we’ve always dug whatever Asterios Kokkinos is doing, which happens to be an unbelievable myriad of innovative ways to do comedy in his specific niche.

His latest endeavor, Science Friction, happens to be a game show podcast that’s a sci-fi sort version of @midnight with a tad bit of Billy on the Street thrown in. Asterios has contestants from the worlds comedy and sci-fi compete in trivia that’s entirely biased to his very, very strong opinions on Star Wars, Blade Runner, The Matrix, having robots for pets etc. etc. The extremely arbitrary nature of his points awarding system is also fun element of the show.

Even if you’re not that into sci-fi, which one of the regular contestants is not, it’s still pretty damn entertaining to see how heated Asterios gets.

Give it a listen (and maybe subscribe) to Science Friction on iTunes or Google Play.

Andy Richter to Host Jimmy Kimmel-Produced Game Show “Big Fan”

(via Deadline)

Maybe Andy Richter will shine like Steve Harvey does as a game show host on Family Feud?

The idea stemmed from a game that Jimmy Kimmel plays on Jimmy Kimmel Live where a celebrity is challenged to a trivia match against one of their own super fans. Kimmel has now gotten it to be its own series, not unlike Fallon has done with Lip Sync Battle, at ABC.

It’s a weekly game show, so we’re going to assume Richter will retain his role as Conan’s sidekick.
