Pick of the Day: The Frogtown Show 6/12

June 8, 2021
News
chris garcia, comedy show, daniel webb, danielle perez, emily maya mills, erin lennox, frogtown show, jared goldstein, lindsay ames, naomi ekperigin, stand up comedy

Way before the pandemic was even a shadow of a worry of a thought, there was a magical outdoor venue in LA, Spoke Bicycle Cafe, that had a magical comedy show, The Frogtown Show.

It was a bi-weekly stand-up show that happened in the open spaces within this part-cafe-part-bar-part-bicycle-repair-shop-part-playground that is flanked by the more scenic parts of the LA River. They always got fantastic line-ups and this Jun. 12th edition is no different. The amazing trio of Jared Goldstein, Emily Maya Mills, and Erin Lennox will lead off Chris Garcia, Naomi Ekperigin, Danielle Perez, Daniel Webb, and Lindsay Ames.

In case you forgot, that’s some of LA comedy’s best and brightest.

Tickets are going for $10 per table (tables are for 2) and upwards with a 2 drink min. Go get them here before they sell out fast.

Pick of the Day: Every President Ever: Together Again: INAUGURATED WITH A VENGEANCE 1/19

January 7, 2021
News
alexandria iona, biden, comedy livestream, comedy show, inauguration, kate villa, trump

Following yesterday’s latest news, it’s kind of hard to look forward to anything while still in the daze of what was one of the darkest days of a long period of dark days in our current history.

Yet, it would seem a comedy show about the darker facts about every U.S. president might be the perfect thing to come about right now. Kate Villa and Alexandria Iona’s Every President Ever: Together Again: INAUGURATED WITH A VENGEANCE is exactly that show. They will feature 46 different comedians presenting things that you might not know about (since, like Andrew Jackson’s presidency, to the victor goes the spoils, right?). Even if you’re suspicious enough of the government that you’ve looked some dirt on POTUS of years past, this still ought to be a rollicking good, satirical time.

This virtual character show is being presented by the lovely folks at Littlefield NYC and is set for right before Joe Biden’s Inauguration as the 46th President of the United States on Tues. Jan. 19th at 5PM PT/8PM ET. Tickets are available for $5 suggested donation and you can and should go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Final Week of Comedy Quarantine

December 7, 2020
News
babs gray, comedy livestream, comedy quarantine, comedy show, dominque gelin, ig live, instagram live, sam varela, teresa lee

Comedy Quarantine has been dutifully and faithfully delivering stand-up comedy via Instagram Live (in a pretty slick way, we might add) for almost every week of lockdown/quarantine/this damn pandemic. The team of Barbara Gray, Teresa Lee, Dominque Gelin, and Sam Varela have connected the best comedians from around the country and the world to stay connected to everyone else and work on material within their own home or wherever they happen to be at the time (Teresa went live from a protest in DTLA) longer than any other comedy live-stream that we have known about this year.

On top of that, they have been taking donations to not only support the comedians on their line-up, but have raised plenty of $$$ for great organizations such as Ground Game LA or The Okra Project.

So, this week will be their last week and, as they have done throughout the duration of the pandemic, they’ve got stacked line-ups that are very, very much tuning into on IG Live for (as you can see above).

If you weren’t already checking them out, please check @ComedyQuarantine out for their final shows this Wed., Thurs., and Fri. at 7PM PT/10PM ET.

This Friday, Nov. 13th, Helltrap Nightmare is partnering with LA local orgs NOLYMPICS and LA Tenants Union to support the Food Not Rent fund for their latest show. Pick of the Day: A Very Funches Christmas Show 12/5

November 3, 2020
News
comedy show, holiday comedy, livestream, ron funches, stand up comedy

An undeniable source of joy, something that we’re all in dire need for, especially today, is one Ron Funches. An evening of comedy with Funches is something that you can hang some hope on and look forward to and there will be one such night coming up.

A Very Funches Christmas Show will be another exclusive live-streamed show that Funches will be doing from a studio and pretty much feel like a real stand-up show (we saw Funches’ do this earlier this Summer and it was pretty damn great) and streamed on YouTube across the world.

As it’s a holiday show, there will be holiday songs and the sort of mirth and merriment that we could all use not only in December, but at any time in the world we currently live in.

A Very Funches Christmas Show is set to stream on Sun. Dec. 5th at 7PM PT/10PM ET and is only $10 for access to the live-stream (and $50 for a VIP show meet and greet). Please treat yourself and go get your tickets here.

Good Heroin Is Now a Podcast

News
comedy podcast, comedy show, dave ross, good heroin

Just to be clear, you can’t get actually get any sort of heroin in podcast form. However, you can get a taste of one of LA comedy’s favorite shows was like on a new weekly podcast.

One of the great weekly joys in the LA comedy scene was venturing down to Stories in Echo Park on a Saturday night to pack tightly into the back patio, spilling out into the parking lot, just to see one of LA’s best indie shows, Good Heroin. Hosts Dave Ross and Matt Ingebretson corralled a stacked line-up every week and put up a wall-to-wall great stand-up show in one of the more alluring, inviting bookstore/cafe patios the city has to offer.

Since it’s unclear when that version of Good Heroin will get to return (it got so packed that there was almost no way you could social distance and safely have that show with how it used to be done), Dave has opted to adapt Good Heroin into podcast that, a la the live show, features bits and clips of stand-up as well as interviews and more clever shenanigans that the format of a podcast allows. If you can imagine being at Stories (if you’re in LA, they are open for you to support FYI), you can get a sense of the wondrous rambunctiousness that was had every Saturday night for years.

Ross already has a few episodes up featuring the likes of Debra DiGiovanni, Sammy Arechar, Kevin Camia, Alex Edelman, Hannah Einbinder, Chris Charpentier, Matt Ingebretson, and Zahid Dewji. Get into, subscribe, etc. Good Heroin with Dave Ross here: goodheroin.buzzsprout.com/

Pick of the Day: Comedy for Navajo & Hopi COVID Relief 5/17

May 15, 2020
News
benefit event, brian bahe, comedy show, dan licata, hopi, jes tom, jo firestone, larry owens, navajo, sarah squirm

Though vastly underreported, one of the hardest hit groups by the COVID-19 in America is Native Americans. For many tribes, their reservations are vastly underserved and lacked many essential resources and services without threat of a pandemic including running water, access to medical services, and even a scarcity of grocery stores.

Of the many, many causes you can support, this might be a good one to give your money to. And, as luck we have it, you can specifically support COVID-19 relief for the Navajo Nation and Hopi Reservation via joining in for a splendid evening of live-streamed, innovative comedy.

This Comedy for Navajo & Hopi COVID Relief features some of most dynamic comedians around such as Larry Owens, Jo Firestone, Sarah Squirm, Dan Licata, Jes Tom, and host/event organizer Brian Bahe. A line-up like this will give you a night you will never forget as there’s no real telling what they’ll do, but, whatever it may be, it’s going to be like nothing you’ve seen before.

So, please support the Navajo and Hopi and enjoy what should be one hell of a comedy show for this benefit on Sunday at 5PM PT/8PM ET. Tickets are $10-$30. Please go get them here.

Pick of the Day: Picture This! 5/9

May 7, 2020
News
animation, brandie posey, comedy show, irene tu, live animation, mike l mayfield, paul danke, stand up comedy

One of the LA comedy scene’s most unique and marvelous shows has been, for quite awhile now actually, the live-animated comedy show, Picture This. For those unfamiliar or those so distanced from what happened in the before times, comedians perform and, in real time, animators would draw/sketch/animate based on their set.

We’re so thankful to hear that Picture This is coming to the comedy live-stream realm and, given the way Zoom is set up, all the comedians will likely have a better eye on the animator (as opposed to standing facing away from the screen where the animation is projected). Also, having another line-up including many of the best animators and illustrators in comedy paired with the comedy stylings of Kate Willett, Paul Danke, Irene Tu gets pretty damn close to putting on the show you would have gotten to see in LA or in several places along the comedy festival circuit.

So, look forward to having quite the Saturday afternoon this weekend with a brand spankin’ new edition of Picture This! Go get your tickets for $10 before they sell out!

Pick of the Day: Cameron Esposito 4/29

April 28, 2020
News
cameron esposito, comedy show, nori reed, stand up comedy

All the way back to the time when The Daily Show was being handed off from Jon Stewart, it was unclear who was going to be his successor. During that time, we firmly believed that, if she were up for it, Cameron Esposito would be a perfect person to take the Daily Show baton from Stewart. Esposito’s charm, warmth, poise, and keen, razor sharp observations is the perfect combo that we’d like to see on our screens on a nightly basis.

So, anytime there’s a chance to see her headline, we don’t think you should pass it up. Lucky for you, Cameron is doing her own headlining gig with her latest hour, Separately, via Zoom this Wed. Apr. 29th at 5PM PT/8PM ET. She’s taking donations for admission to the Zoom live-stream that will go to Cameron, Nori Reed (Cameron’s opener for the night), and the beloved Dynasty Typewriter at the Hayworth Theater. Get more details on the show/donations here.

Pick of the Day: Pretty Pretty Pony with Tony Hale

April 13, 2020
News
cole stratton, comedy show, improv comedy, joey greer, live comedy, long form improv, pretty pretty pony, tony hale, vanessa ragland, westside comedy theater

Throughout our tenure, Pretty, Pretty Pony has been one of our favorite improv groups throughout LA’s vast collection of improv teams (we even picked them for one of our annual 100 Best Things in Comedy We Were Witness To in No Particular Order).

Housed at Santa Monica’s Westside Comedy Theater, they were occupying a monthly slot featuring great guest monologists and a razor sharp team of some of the best improvisers around.

That would include:
Chris Alvarado (Comedy Bang! Bang!/Heyday)
Joey Greer (Mission IMPROVable/Bear Supply)
Vanessa Ragland (Pop My Culture Podcast/Ragland & Greer)
Ed Roe (The Best Man/Queen George)
Atul Singh (Mission IMPROVable/Westside Sketch Co.)
Cole Stratton (Pop My Culture Podcast/SF Sketchfest)

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the Westside Comedy Theater to temporarily close its door, but Pretty, Pretty Pony will keep the show going with one fantastic guest, Tony Hale (Veep, Arrested Development), this Fri. Apr. 17th on WCT’s Twitch channel. The show is free to watch, but they’ll be taking donations for the theater via voluntary ticket purchase here.

Pick of the Day: Uncabaret Zoom Edition

April 10, 2020
News
alec mapa, alex edelman, beth lapides, comedy show, jamie bridgers, julia sweeney, kate willett, kira soltanovich, storytelling, uncabaret, variety show

UnCabaret with Beth Lapides, the legendary comedy/storytelling/music variety show, has been around for over a quarter of a century and it has no intention of stopping or slowing down even if it has change things up a little bit for the time being.

While we’re all observing our “safer at home” order here in LA, we all can’t take a seat in the gorgeous Rockwell Table & Stage, but UnCabaret, Beth, and UnCabaret music director Mitch Kaplan will be pushing forward with their show via the more popular than ever video conferencing platform Zoom and feature a, per usual, wonderful, wonderful line-up including Julia Sweeney, Alec Mapa, Alex Edelman, Kira Soltanovich, Kate Willett, and Jamie Bridgers.

UnCabaret Zoom Edition is happening this Sun., Apr. 12th at 7:30PM PT/10:30PM ET. Get more details/register for a free ticket here.

The show is indeed free, but donations will be gladly accepted and split between artists. Venmo @BethLapides or PayPal Beth@uncabaret.com.

Pick of the Day: Fancy Sauce (i.e. Return of Sauce Comedy)

March 12, 2020
News
comedy show, live comedy, los angeles, stand up comedy

For every day of the week, there is usually one or more weekly live comedy shows that you can rely on in the Greater LA Area to deliver you the best in stand-up, sketch, and improv. For Fridays, Sauce was absolutely one of those shows and hosts and LA comedy favorites Barbara Gray, Erin Lampart, Jeff Wattenhofer, and Brodie Reed maintained a damn good stand-up comedy show (that always included some jaunty, original bits and characters) at 8PM at Desano Pizza Bakery for years and years.

Now, after a bit of a hiatus, Sauce is back, but has evolved into Fancy Sauce and will be going up at The Airliner on Fridays, starting next month. We have no doubt that they’ll be as good as they have ever been in The Airliner’s brand spanking new, wonderful upstairs show room.

So, Fancy Sauce will be in Lincoln Heights (just North of DTLA) starting Fridays at April 3rd at 9PM. Tickets will be $5 and it should be part of your weekly comedy diet, especially if you live far on the Eastside.

So, wouldn’t it be great to watch comedy with LA’s most lovely train station as the backdrop?

Indeed, there will be a live comedy show next week, Clock Tower Comedy, featuring some of LA’s best in improv, musical comedy, and stand-up. Robby Hoffman is at it again.

“It” being commandeering beloved and retired The Chris Gethard Show to do her own version of the show, which is arguably a very on-brand TCGS to continue to the show.

Hoffman’s version of the show gets into similar beautiful and hilarious chaos that Gethard did, but does so with her own cheeky alpha energy. Also, special guests could range from comedians, actors, etc. all the way to real estate agents making for a truly unpredictable, but downright hysterical night.

Tickets usually sell out for this, so best go get them for $12 right now (even though the show is a month away).

However, that’s all about change with the one and only comedy/artist/producer/purveyor of wonderfully terrible things Rob Schrab (Channel 101, Monster House, Scud: The Disposable Assassin). A podcast called Schrab Home Video will take residence at Dynasty Typewriter at Hayworth Theater starting Mar. 15th and it’ll be “part clip-show, part talk show, and still more parts A/V installation and basement hang”. Of course, Schrab will talk to his vast, wide web of cool comedy, horror, animation folks that he is connected to and it should be a damn good time every Sunday early evening at 5PM.

In either case, there’s something that’s perfect on the horizon for both sorts of folks next month. That national touring cast of Book of Mormon and many of UCB’s very best will be going head-to-head in a show that runs them through the gauntlet of improv, bits, musical comedy, and more!

Moore is so open and warm and so damn fun that the chaos is pretty damn fun.

Better Half with Jared Logan and Kara Klenk were the successors to LA’s beloved, long-running Thursday stand-up show The Josh & Josh Show. They opted to relocate to a different day and a different part of town, but we’re happy that they’re back as Jared and Kara are probably one of the funniest comedian power couples that we know.

The new Better Half will now happen on Tuesday’s at Echo Park’s dark, chic (and even a little sexy?) Bar Bandini. This first line-up for their new night/venue is pretty stellar (as was always the case with Better Half).
