Please Get and Enjoy Chris Fairbanks’ New Hour Special “Rescue Cactus”

June 22, 2020
News
chris fairbanks, comedy special, now streaming, stand up

Throughout all of our years of watching live comedy (or comedy in general), few are as mastered at being purely silly as Chris Fairbanks. The dedication and care that Fairbanks puts into his wonderfully ridiculous bits are evident in how intricate his comedy can get and we’ve enjoyed the dozens and dozens of times that we’ve seen all of that up close. Whether it be acrobatic level word play or outright tomfool observations, Fairbanks has always delivered on every stage.

Capturing Chris’ joyful lightning in a bottle and releasing in some form or another hasn’t in some time, but thankfully, there’s this brand new hour special, Rescue Cactus just released today. It’s a marvelous collection of the sort of high flying absurdity that Chris couples with his animated, yet slightly grounded delivery. It’s the sort of contrast that heightens the comedy in such a superb way (even the pre-taped, staged opening embodies this notion).

Simply put, if you need a big dose of silly, get and enjoy Chris Fairbanks’ Rescue Cactus now.

Please Enjoy Electric Television’s “Freeway to Hell”

Several years ago, some real cinema magic got blended with some incredibly clever humor in Cocktails & Dreams. It featured Chris Fairbanks squeezing his way, pretty seamlessly, into various scenes of Cocktail and it was pretty damn great.

Just today, the same folks behind Cocktail & Dreams, released their latest work Freeway to Hell, which is their longest and most ambitious piece yet and part of their Electric Television anthology series. The visit to an alternative cinematic universe is bewitching and sure do have fun messing around in said universe “telling a new story out of recycled parts”.

Please watch and enjoy the comedy pastiche of Freeway to Hell and we’re pretty sure you’ll be transported to some other reality that’s free of a pandemic and only troubled by a B-movie version of the Hell’s Angels.

Often, the green room of a live comedy show is one of the best places to be, especially if you want that fly on the wall experience of comedians that are off-stage, but still sharp whilst riffing with their contemporaries.

Being stuck in quarantine, the idea of gathering is still a bit away from happening (even with just comedians). Yet, you can still get a bit of the green room experience this weekly starting this Thursday 4/30 with the In The Green Room live-stream.

Set to hang back in that proverbial/virtual green room is many of Avail Comedy‘s very best including

Comedians Include*
Chris Fairbanks
Gareth Reynolds
Greg Barris
James Fritz
Maggie Maye
Matt McCarthy
Megan Koester
Nick Flanagan
Paul Danke
Phoebe Bottoms
Ramin Nazer
Ryan Singer
Sara June

* based on quarantine availability

Rather than having the news on all day, it’d be much, much better to just hang with comedians hanging with other comedians. Tune in at youtube.com/availcomedy at 8PM PT/11PM

My Favorite Murder’s Podcast Network Exactly Right Launches Today

It was less than three years ago that Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark enjoyed each other’s company in recounting infamous murders and releasing it as a podcast known as My Favorite Murder.

Now, having toured the globe and created a gigantic self-sustaining community of murderinos, Karen and Georgia have launched their very own podcast network with a handful of podcasts. Comedy podcasts Do You Need a Ride? where Karen and Chris Fairbanks interview comedians while going to or coming from the airport and The Purrrcast where many comedians get to dish about their cats will be under the Exactly Right banner.

We’re sure this is only the tip of the iceberg for Exactly Right, so you might want to start following them.

Both comics and audience get to engage in their own sides of a drinking game while they do/watch stand-up, making for a, put quite simply, a damn good time. Thanks to Thrillist you can enjoy the same sort of merriment that crowds that make it feel like your at a movie level house party as they’ve produced a digital series of Brew Haha.

For once, you actually won’t have to worry about getting there early to get a seat. So, please watch and enjoy the first episode (and maybe even play along with the drinking game) here.

This “Freeway to Hell” Trailer Means There’s More Rotoscoping Goodness Coming from Electric Television

Electric Television, the good folks that used rotoscoping to make fun short films that punch up Cocktail and Dragnet into Cocktails & Dreams and Green Boy, will very soon being bring you another piece entitled Freeway to Hell. In a way, it’s like the next evolution of making fun of movies going from MST3K to actually being in the movie to satirize it.

This time, they’ll be hilariously cutting themselves into those specific types of 60s films that attempted to demonize subcultures like bike gangs, but seeming very cheesy while doing so. Get a taste of Freeway to Hell here. The full short will be coming soon!

Rather than wait for comedy folks to make fun of a bad movie that finds its way to your local multiplex, come watch them dream up something that’s so bad that it’s funny (and, of course, subsequently reveling in how bad/stereotypical/derivative/hack it is) at the new live comedy show Setflix.

Looking at this line-up, which includes a longtime member of Screen Junkies and a co-host of The Bechdel Cast along with a co-host of The Simpsons podcast Everything’s Coming Up Podcast, we’re pretty sure you going to hear some “best/worst” movie pitches.

Setflix will happen at Dynasty Typewriter on Wednesday, August 15th at 8PM. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at door. Get them in advance here.

Just because Trump is a brat, doesn’t mean that he’s the only elected representative whose feet should be held to the fire by comedy.

So, the Left Coast podcast with Sara June is putting on a roast of reps at the state level here in good ol’ CA. The line-up with some of our favorites here in LA is more than up to task.

Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at door. Get them ahead of time here.

It doesn’t get much more Echo Park, and we mean that in the best way possible, than this.

Henry Phillips has two gifts for us all this holiday season.

First, he made a brand new holiday themed episode of Henry’s Kitchen where he tries making a ‘holiday fish stew’. Watch it and decide if that’s a road you want to go down instead of ham or turkey.

Second, he has just released a Henry’s Kitchen Cookbook, which is perfect for anyone who is looking for an “alternative” to traditional cooking.

This year, Henry has really outdone himself in attempting to cook for us all during these holidays.
