Pick of the Day: Mystery Comedy Big Game Theater 3000 (in LA) 2/11

February 8, 2024
News
alternative, big game, brodie reed, chase bernstein, hay beacon, jake kroeger, los angeles comedy

So, no matter how you feel about football, this Sunday is a big American Football day that’s also chock full of the most expensive advertising that money can buy all around the globe. It’s almost a weird glitch in the matrix where the world stops for a sport that still only majorly popular in one country.

With that in mind, why listen to the normal, run of the mill commentary you’d get during the Big Game and, instead, enjoy MST3K riffing over the telecast, commercials, half-time show, and all, from LA comedy’s best? Thank goodness that the Lyric Hyperion has got just that this Sunday with a very special event called Mystery Comedy Big Game Theater 3000. That’s right, the likes of comedy luminaries such as Chase Bernstein, Brodie Reed, Hay Beacon, and more will be riffing over the telecast this Sun. Feb. 11th at 3:30PM.

Come through to Lyric Hyperion as it’ll be FREE and, in our opinion, the best way to watch big game. Get more details/tickets here.

Pick of the Day: 50 Worst Jokes (in LA) 12/28

December 13, 2023
News
50 worst jokes, babs gray, best of 2023, brodie reed, los angeles comedy, silverlake, stand up comedy, worst of 2023

As the days fade away towards the end of 2023, year-end/best of lists are coming out aplenty. There is plenty to be celebrated with the very best in comedy of this year (Barbie might be the purest comedy to win a Best Picture Oscar in decades?). With that said, what about the worst?

Well, more accurately here, what are the worst jokes of some of the funniest folks in the LA comedy scene (the worst jokes of the year live in the comments of any social media platform)? That’s right, Babs Gray (Lady to Lady) is returning, along with co-host Brodie Reed, to have an absurdly fun, ridiculous evening of certified funny people doing what has proven to be their worst joke of the year (and you best bet that any attempt at an actual good joke will be met with boos). We’d argue that it’s almost more wild and unforgettable than the diametrically opposed 50 First Jokes that happens all over the country.

50 Worst Jokes will go down on Thurs. Dec. 28th at 7;30PM at Lyric Hyperion, complete with dance party afterwards. You can get all this show (and a chance to boogie at LH’s gorgeous theatre) for just $10 right here.

Pick of the Day: Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring Taping (in LA) 4/24

April 7, 2023
News
Abe Farrelly, alex hooper, brodie reed, carmen morales, chloe hilliard, Craig Conant, Dylan Adler, free show, Greg Santos, Henry Sir, Jason Cheny, Kylie Vincent, Laura Peek, los angeles, los angeles comedy, Meredith Casey, saul trujillo, sean jordan, tv taping

Comedy Central is doing another round of what makes up the majority of their stand-up these days, “Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring” (Premium Blend for Gen-Xers) and handpicking from the LA scene the folks that they like to highlight for about 10 minutes or so on YouTube.

Of course, by the very nature of this post, you can get the special in on seeing these sets of who Comedy Central thinks is next and see it in person. This latest edition of Comedy Central Stand-Up Featuring is slated for Mon. Apr. 24th at Club Los Globos in Silverlake with an early and late show.

The choice line-ups are as follows:

7PM PT: Meredith Casey, Craig Conant, Sean Jordan, Laura Peek, Brodie Reed, Henry Sir, & Saul Trujillo

9:30PM PT: Dylan Adler, Carmen Morales, Jason Cheny, Alex Hooper, Abe Farrelly, Greg Santos, Kylie Vincent, & Chloé Hillard

In addition to the show being free (so long as you RSVP), CC is picking up two drinks for you (so long as it’s well/beer/wine).

Monday doesn’t get much better than that. RSVP before it sells out here.

Pick of the Day: R. U. Afraid of the 90’s? (near LA) 10/21

September 29, 2022
News
90s, alex song xia, bri pruett, brodie reed, budd diaz, charles gould, dana donnelly, danielle perez, eli olsberg, halloween, Kat Toledo, Liz Magee, los angeles comedy, madison shepard, public displays of altadena, teresa lee, will weldon

If you’re already trying to make plans to keep all of October spooky, know that there’s plenty of comedy that can (and very much should fill your schedule). It’ll range from anything where comedians will dress up from comedians of yesteryear to scary storytelling to revisiting the sort of nostalgia that gives you the thing that was the cornerstone of R.L. Stine’s legacy, goosebumps.

On Friday, October 21st at 8:30PM, Teresa Lee will actually lead such a creepy journey back to the cringiest things from over 20 years ago with many of LA’s funniest folks at a new LA venue that’s both literally and figuratively “out there”, Altadena’s Public Displays of Altadena.

So far, Alex Song-Xia, Brodie Reed, Bri Pruett, Budd Diaz, Charles Gould, Danielle Perez, Dana Donnelly, Eli Olsberg, Kat Toledo, Liz Magee, Madison Shepard, and Will Weldon dare to be on this bill.

It ought to be a collective night of spooking yourself over how you might have possibly convinced that JNCO jeans were ever a good idea.

Also, if you show up in costume, you’ll get a free drink, and there might just be a 90s dance party following the show.

All of this show will only run you $10 per ticket. So go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: Late Late Breakfast (in LA) 8/29

August 22, 2022
News
bailey norton, brodie reed, Carly Kane, curtis cook, experimental comedy, jake noll, Jane Harrison, los angeles comedy, maggie maye, Molly Kearney, sammy mowrey, Shrimp Boys, tyler jackson, yard theater

Whether you need a complete distraction from the ever more hellish reality we live in or just a jolt of unfettered absurdity, there is nothing quite like Late Late Breakfast to serve those in plentiful supply to all of our heart’s content.

Late Late Breakfast was forged several years ago by Tyler Jackson and Danny Maupin as an alternative to any sort of traditional comedy show by challenging stand-up comedians to do their act while a randomly selected ridiculous task was assigned to them. That could be anything from embodying the seven deadly sins throughout their set to being interrupted by a karaoke chorus of Sweet Caroline from the audience. It’s controlled chaos, perhaps, in its finest form.

It has been quite some time since they’ve mounted an edition of Late Late Breakfast in LA, but the Yard Theater will be letting this bonkers show bring some life to next Monday night on Aug. 29th at 9PM. Having to run through a gauntlet of abject silliness will be a very, very fine collection of LA comedians including The Shrimp Boys, Curtis Cook, Molly Kearney, Maggie Maye, Brodie Reed, Bailey Norton, Jane Harrison, Jake Noll, and Carly Kane with Tyler Jackson and Sammy Mowrey presiding over all the tomfoolery.

Tickets are only $5 and you really ought to go get tickets and have a Monday night to remember here.

The Comedy Bureau’s Heading West (to Venice) For Its Latest Show on May 18th

April 29, 2022
News
andres du bouchet, brodie reed, butt, jake kroeger, los angeles comedy, sasha mercie, venice
Yes, we’re already based on the West Coast, but we happen to live pretty much in the geographic middle of LA and we can actually head a little further West. It’s actually been something that we’ve been meaning to do for awhile now as a way to bring some of the lovely comedy that’s a little closer to our doorstep out to the Westside since The Comedy & Magic Club is still closed and the Eastside is only growing bigger with the amount of comedy that they have (even from before lockdown).
So, we’re doing a very special evening at a beloved and very classy speakeasy, Townhouse Venice, right around the Venice Boardwalk, with an amazing stage and those ever coveted low ceilings that are perfect for live comedy.
Per usual, we’re gathering our favorite folks from every corner comedy for this special night including:
Brodie Reed
Sasha Merci
Andrés du Bouchet
BUTT
and a few more splendid acts TBA!
Of course, TCB’s founder and director Jake Kroeger will be presiding over the evening to make sure things are up to TCB snuff.
Set the date for The Comedy Bureau Heads West @ Townhouse Venice on Wed. May 18th at 8PM PT. Tickets are $10 and proof of vaccination will be required. Go snag your tickets right now right here.

Pick of the Day: (2nd Return of) Blamblamblam (in LA) 4/19

April 18, 2022
News
Anna Seregina & Kyle Mizono, blamblamblam, brian kiley, brodie reed, chris thayer, comedy show, free show, james adomian, k town, los angeles comedy, max beasley, ron lynch, stand up comedy, steph tolev, Vanessa Jeha

In November 2021, we thought we had reached a threshold where we all the things that we knew and love in comedy could somewhat return to happening as regularly scheduled pre-pandemic.

Then, Omicron hit and set most folks/shows/etc. back for months. Thankfully, we’re back to where they rescheduled their shows to or decided to return again and that includes one of LA’s torch bearing shows, Blamblamblam. Faithfully housed in what seems like the lower decks of tall ship in K-Town’s one and only R-Bar, Blam has offered up an otherworldly monthly comedy show for almost a decade and a half.

There’s such a mystical energy to it even when it’s simply a well curated collection of comedians from many corners and disciplines of the art form by one DeMorge Brown. This 2nd return of Blamblamblam is set for this Tues. Apr. 19th at 9PM ish PT (doors at 7PM PT) and a barnburner of a line-up including Ron Lynch, Brodie Reed, Max Beasley, Anna Seregina & Kyle Mizono, Chris Thayer, James Adomian, Vanessa Jeha, Steph Tolev, Brian Kiley, and host Paul Danke & resident mischief starter Davey Johnson are all set to welcome Blam back into the world of living once more.

Oh yeah, it’s free to attend in case we didn’t sell you on it enough already.

Pick of the Day: Self Care Comedy 1 Year Anniversary (Live-stream) 2/1

January 31, 2022
News
1 year anniversary, brodie reed, lizzy cooperman, max and nicky, mike hanford, sean keane, virtual comedy

The concept of time remains illusory as the pandemic continues, but, that’s still no excuse to not celebrate the anniversary of something, especially if it’s something forged out of the limitations thrust upon us by COVID-19.

Self Care Comedy is and has been the premier, virtual stand-up comedy showcase whether cases numbers were down or Delta and Omicron had arrived. This Tuesday, February 1st, Naked Comedy/Sam Varela will mark 1 year of being there for everyone who wanted to or had to stay in, for any reason, and give them a much needed relief in the form of virtual comedy from some of the absolute funniest people in comedy today.

To that point, joining Self-Care Comedy to mark their 1 year anniversary will be the beautiful comedy talents of Lizzy Cooperman, Brodie Reed, Max & Nicky, and Mike Hanford with host Sean Keane presiding over the evening’s festivities on Feb. 1st 7PM PT/10PM ET. As always, admission is free, but donations are encouraged as they will go directly to the comics performing. RSVP and donate here.

Pick of the Day: Sauce Comedy (in LA) 9/28

September 24, 2021
News
anna seregina, babs gray, brodie reed, erin lampart, james fritz, katrina davis, kyle mizono, la comedy, sauce, silverlake, stand up comedy, steve hernandez

Slowly, but surely (as much as the pandemic will allow), some of our favorite shows from the before times are coming back in LA.

Many Friday nights, you could have found us at the back of a private room at Desano Pizza in East Hollywood for the fantastic weekly comedy show known as Sauce. It was nice, neatly packed show that had some of the best stand-ups in LA and some out-of-left-field bits that were the perfect cherry on top for that slice of the evening.

Thankfully, it’s back with most of its original crew, Babs Gray, Erin Lampart, and Brodie Reed and they’ve relocated to both Silverlake Lounge and a Tuesday night. Their first show back since lockdown is set for Tues. Sept. 28th at 9PM PT and admission is free (proof of vaccination required). Per usual, they have a killer line-up  for this edition of Sauce with Katrina Davis, James Fritz, Kyle Mizono & Anna Seregina, and Steve Hernandez.

If you’re in or around Silverlake in LA (or even if you’re not), make this your Tuesday night for this coming week.

Pick of the Day: The Unbirthday Show (in LA) 5/29

News
backyard show, brodie reed, danielle perez, hannah pilkes, lara beitz, live comedy, unbirthday show

The Unbirthday Show is the latest show taking up the mantle in the grand LA comedy tradition of backyard comedy. Yes, the LA comedy scene has been doing outdoor comedy way before we had to (you best bet that we take advantage of the weather out here).

Curated, produced, and hosted by Brooke Finegold, she dresses up a Silverlake backyard for a fun, fantastical comedy show full of LA favorites and up and coming stars. This latest edition of The Unbirthday Show is set for Sat. May 29th at 7:30PM PT (Doors 6:30PM) and has quite the fine line-up of:

Brodie Reed
Danielle Perez
Hannah Pilkes
Harper Rose
Lara Beitz
Matt LeGrande

The Comedy Field Report Ep. 12: Brodie Reed & Balance in Chaos

June 17, 2020
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
8:46, brodie reed, chappelle, eric andre, still game

LA comedy favorite Brodie Reed zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger this week for the latest TCB Field Report and talks about balancing his own personal life, the pandemic, being active for BLM and social justice, and having more opportunity for his own comedy as a black comedian than he ever has before (and how that can also be exhausting). They also break down the intricacies of Chappelle’s 8:46, UCB’s reorganization addressing their need to include more BIPOC voices as well as revisit some of Brodie’s best bits.

Reparations for Slavery Haven’t Happened, But Maybe You Can Support a Comedy Short “16,000 Dollars” About What Reparations Might Actually Look Like

June 20, 2019
Uncategorized
brodie reed, david gborie, ellington wells, francesca fiorentini, jermaine fowler, maggie maye, symone baptiste

As Juneteenth today marks the end of slavery in the U.S. (with its specific end in Texas), it’s as good of a time as ever to highlight the issue of reparations.

Specifically, you can help crowdfund a short film featuring many of LA comedy’s best (Brodie Reed, David Gborie, Maggie Maye, Jermaine Fowler, Francesca Fiorentini, Ellington Wells, Symone Baptiste) imagining a comedic reality where reparations for slavery actually happened in the present day.

Many politicians still, to this day, have trouble talking about reparations, so who knows what will it actually happening. At the very least, you can back this film 16,000 Dollars that will probably further the conversation as well as offer a chance for a really stellar cast and crew to shine.

Find out more about 16,000 Dollars and back it here.

First off, there’s a National Cartoonist Society Festival happening down in Huntington Beach this month. Already, that’s something that should highly peak your interest as it will be a big shindig for comics and cartoons (plus a zombie walk).

On top of that, there will be one of our favorite concept shows, Picture This!, down in the OC for a special free, pop-up show in, perhaps, the perfect setting

They’ve got many of their favorites and stalwarts of the show coming down from LA to Huntington Beach and it’s your chance to see if you’ve avoided making the trek to The Virgil in Silverlake over the last few years.
