The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 128: Adam Cayton-Holland & Staying on The High Plains

September 7, 2022
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
adam cayton holland, denver comedy, emmys, high plains comedy festival, the grawlix, those who cant

At this point of the pandemic, we’re so glad to find many of our favorite things in comedy surviving in tact and coming out thriving on the other end. One of those things is one of the best comedy festivals around, Denver’s High Plains Comedy Festival, founded by one of the funniest working comedians/podcasters/authors/actors today, Adam Cayton-Holland. We talk with Adam about keeping the very beloved High Plains Comedy Festival as well as his own comedy on track through some of the most insane years in all of our lives.

Also, “hot” takes on Creative Arts Emmys winners and Tiffany Haddish having to apologize for sketch comedy scandal.

Pick of the Day: Adam Cayton Holland: Happy Place (in NYC) 4/9

February 16, 2022
News

At this current point in time, even though the pandemic isn’t over, it does seem like we are now legitimately picking up where we left off in March 2020 and as we’re nearing the actual two year mark of when lockdown happened, we’re reminded of all the great things that came to a screeching halt around then.

The brilliant Adam Cayton-Holland was on the path of touring his solo show loosely based off his critically acclaimed tragi-comic memoir, Tragedy Plus Time, resulting in a beautiful, funny, and heart-wrenching hour. Now, on this side of the pandemic, we have no doubt that there’s even more to the show that will be timely and so cathartic, especially as the themes of “suicide, mental illness, stand-up comedy and Nancy Kerrigan,” have become prevalent in our lives in 2022 (Kerrigan comes to mind because of the Winter Olympics happening right now).

Adam will be bringing his Happy Place show back to Brooklyn’s Union Hall on Sat. Apr. 9th at 7:30PM ET. Tickets are only $15 and you best not miss your chance to watch Cayton-Holland’s most arresting and affecting work to date. Get tickets here.

Please Enjoy Adam Cayton-Holland’s New Album “Semblance of Normalcy”

When it comes to the blending the “high” and “low” for comedic effect, there are few that are quite as good at it in all of comedy right now as one Adam Cayton-Holland. In fact, he gets more refined and more delightfully salty with every hour that he puts out.

His latest hour, the brand new album Semblance of Normalcy, showcases his painterly attention to detail with grand, sweeping tales from what starts as normal, everyday minutia. Then, Adam expertly mines the perfect moments, the perfect diction, and the perfect twist to spin one hell of a story whether it be about or birdwatching or drinking a Guinness in Ireland. We definitely found ourselves fully immersed into all the worlds of all of his bits and stories throughout the hour, which was a very welcome break from the current reality.

Adam Cayton Holland’s Semblance of Normalcy is out now from Comedy Central Records and be got or streamed wherever you get your favorite comedy albums.

Adam Cayton-Holland wrote such a powerful book in Happy Place recounting the loss of his sister to suicide. There was such a vast response to Adam’s story within the pages that Cayton-Holland took to the stage and adapted Happy Place into a solo show. Given that Adam is one of the most respected stand-up comedians today, it’s no surprise that there is already buzz around this live show version of Happy Place.

Get your tickets for this exclusive LA performance on Tues. Oct. 29th at 8PM of Happy Place by Adam Cayton-Holland at UCB Franklin here.

For two seasons, The Grawlix (Adam Cayton-Holland, Ben Roy, and Andrew Orvedahl), Maria Thayer, and Rory Scovel have made a dysfunctional, yet fictional high school seem like a pretty splendid place to be.

As the premiere of their third season on Monday, January 14th, 2019 approaches, the administrative gang of Smoot High looks to do it once again, perhaps topping themselves this time around.

See for yourself in the season 3 Those Who Can’t trailer here.

Denver’s own Adam Cayton-Holland third album does a take a cue from the title Adam Cayton-Holland Performs His Signature Bits as a compilation of sorts done in a performance at in Brooklyn’s Union Hall. Adam, for years consistently combines sharp observation with a rambunctious spirit all foregrounded by his great talent for painting detailed, layered pictures with words.

This latest release is no exception. In fact, you can catch Adam on Corden tonight (as of this write-up being posted) to see what we’re talking about.

Adam Cayton-Holland Performs His Signature Bits comes out this Friday, but you can (and should) pre-order it here.

When we used “one hell of a…” in the headline, we didn’t mean that in a good way.

Those Who Can’t’s latest episode has all of the teachers being forced into going to prom to make up for the utter disaster that it was last year.

Of course, this prom that’s in the works doesn’t seem much better at all since they’re more concerned with their dates than the actual running of the prom meant for the students.
