Mo Welch’s Comic Strip “Blair” Sold to HBO Max

September 3, 2020
News
blair, hbo max, mo welch

(via Deadline)

For years, the very funny Mo Welch has not only dazzled stages with her stand-up, but she has also made a comic strip that she’s posted online called “Blair”, centered on Blair, an “antisocial icon”. Welch has even put a book together from the comic called, How to Die Alone: The Foolproof Guide to Not Helping Yourself.

Now, Welch is moving on up to potentially have Blair be on TV. With Chelsea Handler attached as an EP, Blair just got bought up as a project at HBO Max. We can only hope that it gets pick up to have an animated series that speaks to our collective feelings of being stuck in so many literal and figurative ways right now.

We’ll keep you posted if it gets a series order at HBO Max or elsewhere.

Please Get and Enjoy Mike Carrozza’s Purely Silly Debut Album “Cherubic”

September 3, 2020
News
blonde medicine, comedy album, mike carrozza, stand up

If reality is too much right now (and we’re betting that it is), you might be seeking something far removed from the present moment, something abjectly silly, absurd (and cheekily self-aware).

If that is indeed the case, you might want to dive into Mike Carrozza‘s debut comedy album Cherubic that has so many delightful twists, turns, tomfoolery, hysterically intentional “long walks” and is, overall, just a genuine stroke of joy (oh, how rarely we use that word these days). This whole album, whether Mike is in the bit or outside of it making fun of how silly a premise is, takes you down so many avenues and it’s a delightful ride all the way through. Truly, you can imagine Carrozza beaming through all his carefully constructed shenanigans that are undeniably fun and it harkens back to a time and place that, well, is just not now. Carrozza hails from Canada and this first hour bodes well for more jubilant comedy coming on  down from up north.

Mike Carrozza’s Cherubic comes out this Fri. Sept. 4th. Pre-order/buy  fresh from Blonde Medicine here.

Pick of the Day: Eddie Pepitone (Virtually Headlining)

September 3, 2020
News
all things comedy, eddie pepitone

Eddie Pepitone’s latest special For The Masses is, for our money, still one of the very best hours of comedy this year. It’s a testament to trying to catch him whenever you can, no matter when, where, or which virtual platform he’s using.

Eddie has been continuing his Live From the Bunker series on IG Live, but the chance to see him headline is rather rare and, again, should not be missed whenever it comes around.

Luckily, you’ll get a chance to see Eddie virtually headline in what will be an international comedy stand-up show. The Comedy Club & BeComedy UK and All Things Comedy are all collaborating to bring an exclusive evening/afternoon of Pepitone with Stella Graham and Luca Capani featuring all across the pond.

This performance is set for Sun. Sept. 6th at 1PM PT/4PM ET/9PM BST and tickets are €11.50. You best get them here real quick.

Please Enjoy Lisa Curry’s Debut Album “Alive For a While”

September 2, 2020
News
alive for a while, comedy album, debut, full force records, lisa curry, stand up

In the realm of dark comedy, there is a certain line to observe. It doesn’t necessarily have much to do with how dark you get, but more to do with how forced or artificial a particularly sinister punchline might be. Going dark/blue for dark/blue’s sake, more often than not is not that impressive or, truth be told, all that shocking.

Lisa Curry‘s dark streak in her comedy, however, unmistakably comes from a very genuine place and she has the sharp writing to deliver it perfectly. Her debut album Alive For A While puts Curry’s verve for dark jokes impressively on display. Line after line, Curry paints furiously strokes in the imagery of her own stories and observations, but never loses the tether to her own experience making for cathartically funny bits.

Another layer that makes this debut hour more impressive is that Curry recorded it in London rather than any home club she might have her in the U.S. Going very dark for your first hour overseas is quite the feat and Curry really makes it work.

So,  please get and enjoy Alive For A While, out today, right here.

And Now for Addie Weyrich’s Impression of Her Fighting the Urge to Look at Her Phone When She Wakes Up

September 2, 2020
News
addie weyrich, bits

Addie Weyrich is more than merely multi-talented. She’s innovative, hilarious, and, unlike many comedians, very athletic. This particular bit, captured at her former monthly live show, Everything’s Great at Dynasty Typewriter, wherein she impersonates a special morning routine trying to not look at her phone is great showcase of all of these traits (as well as something that hits close to home while we’re all in lockdown).

Maybe, just maybe this will inspire you to do more than just rely on Screen Time reminders to cut down on your smart phone usage?

Please enjoy Addie’s bit here.

(don’t know when I’ll be able to do this live bit on a show any time soon, so heck why not put it on the IG! also this sentiment is still relevant seeing as reading the news first thing when I wake up absolutely destroys my day!)

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 23: Carmen Morales & Important Distractions

September 2, 2020
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
big mouth, carmen morales, gaffigan, good heroin, mark normand, out to lunch, social d, zoom shows

To pull of a live-stream stand-up show is hard just as it. To do it consistently and charge and have a dedicated audience that’s willing to pay in an unprecedented time of economic fallout is truly amazing. That’s what Carmen Morales has done with her recurring live-stream Zoom stand-up show, Social D. Carmen zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger to see how she pulled it off and really disproves that comedy is dead right now (it’s just different). Also, “hot” takes on Jim Gaffigan’s rant against the RNC and Ayo Edebiri replacing Jenny Slate as voice of Missy on Big Mouth.

You can follow Carmen at carmenmorales.com and @thefunnycarmen across socials and listen to her podcast No Sir Pod.

Please Enjoy Demi Adejuyigbe’s Mischievous Cupid Music Video for Eric Slick’s “Over It”

In a time where dating and romance have been vastly limited due to lockdown/social distancing/etc., a world where there was a real life Cupid might be nice.

That said, a real life Cupid might be more bent on mischief than one might initially think and the effects of Cupid arrow might be a little more fleeting than in the fairy tales. That’s how comedy multi-hyphenate Demi Adejuyigbe imagines his version of Cupid for the music video for Eric Slick’s latest single “Over It” (that just happens to include so many fun comedy folks including Ayo Edebiri, Lou Wilson, Kate Comer, Natalie Morales, Mike Cabellon, Ify Nwadiwe, Gabriel Gundacker, Mia Vicino, Ben Cahn, Addie Weyrich, and Nick Kocher).

Though the video takes place in a world that isn’t going through a pandemic, the end of the video feels pretty cathartic for everything we’re going through right now. Please enjoy it here.

Enjoy Trailer for Christian Movie Satire “Faith Based”

September 1, 2020
News
Christoph Sanders, david koechner, faith based, gravitas ventures, jason alexander, lance reddick, Luke Barnett, margaret cho, satire, Tanner Thomason, trailer, vincent masciale

For several years now, the niche industry of faith based movies, which are very specifically films geared towards those of the Christian faith, have proven to be quite the moneymakers. More and more prominent talent that previously never take part in a “Christian movie” have found that it isn’t as risky of a move and started popping up here and there in such movies.

So, Faith Based, from director Vincent Masciale and writer and co-star Luke Barnett, take on and satirize the whole cottage industry of these “faith-based” films by showing a duo schemes to get rich quick through producing their own ludicrous Christian full length feature about the first prayer in space.

Take a gander of what they have up their sleeve (including an ensemble cast featuring Jason Alexander, Lance Reddick, and Margaret Cho) with the trailer here, then look for Faith Based to roll out next month Oct. 9th.

gallery 1988, open call, submissions

One of our favorite art galleries in all of LA (and what might be the preeminent pop culture art gallery in the U.S.) is Gallery 1988 as it is one of a handful of places where art and comedy very directly intersect. They’ve hosted exhibitions of art dedicated to anything from The Simpsons to SNL to It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia to classic stand-up comedy and so much more.

Now, in these times, they’re taking a big leap by announcing an open call for submissions for the next few shows coming up. Just send 3-4 JPEGs or link to site to info@gallery1988.com and if they dig your stuff, they’ll reach out to you within four weeks.

If you have a penchant for making wonderful, curious, amazing art that’s very likely inspired by something in pop culture, you really ought to submit.

View this post on Instagram

We’ve only done this a few times in 17 year history – but we’re calling for submissions! We know more artists are home creating than ever before and we have some great shows coming up. Please send 3-4 JPEGs or a link to a website to info@gallery1988.com (no theme needed). We can’t respond to everyone, but if your work fits for an upcoming exhibit – you’ll hear from us within 4 weeks. THANKS!!

SYFY Adds “The Summoner” From Charlie Hankin to TZGZ Animation Block

August 31, 2020
News
charlie hankin, stoopid buddy studios, syfy, tzgz

(via Deadline)

SYFY keeps beefing up its own late night animation block TZGZ (not too unlike Adult Swim is for Cartoon Network) and it seems to get more and more enticing with every new show they order. The latest addition comes from Charlie Hankin and Stoopid Buddy Studios and is called The Summoner.

We’ve followed and thoroughly enjoyed Hankin’s work for awhile now whether it be animating cartoons for The New Yorker or being one half of one of our favorite sketch duos Good Cop Great Cop. Hankin has such a great knack for finding absurdist minutia to tap for humor. This series caters to that strength perfectly as it centers on a pair of roommates, one of which is an alien that can summon any object, but never summons anything useful.

Three episodes of The Summoner are set for next year and we won’t be surprised if SYFY keeps adding even more series to TZGZ over the coming months to become an even more formidable animation block to tune into.

Good Heroin Is Now a Podcast

News
comedy podcast, comedy show, dave ross, good heroin

Just to be clear, you can’t get actually get any sort of heroin in podcast form. However, you can get a taste of one of LA comedy’s favorite shows was like on a new weekly podcast.

One of the great weekly joys in the LA comedy scene was venturing down to Stories in Echo Park on a Saturday night to pack tightly into the back patio, spilling out into the parking lot, just to see one of LA’s best indie shows, Good Heroin. Hosts Dave Ross and Matt Ingebretson corralled a stacked line-up every week and put up a wall-to-wall great stand-up show in one of the more alluring, inviting bookstore/cafe patios the city has to offer.

Since it’s unclear when that version of Good Heroin will get to return (it got so packed that there was almost no way you could social distance and safely have that show with how it used to be done), Dave has opted to adapt Good Heroin into podcast that, a la the live show, features bits and clips of stand-up as well as interviews and more clever shenanigans that the format of a podcast allows. If you can imagine being at Stories (if you’re in LA, they are open for you to support FYI), you can get a sense of the wondrous rambunctiousness that was had every Saturday night for years.

Ross already has a few episodes up featuring the likes of Debra DiGiovanni, Sammy Arechar, Kevin Camia, Alex Edelman, Hannah Einbinder, Chris Charpentier, Matt Ingebretson, and Zahid Dewji. Get into, subscribe, etc. Good Heroin with Dave Ross here: goodheroin.buzzsprout.com/

The X-Files Animated Comedy Spin-Off in Development at Fox

August 28, 2020
News
spin off, x-files, x-files albuquerque

(via Variety)

The reverence that X-Files fans still have for the landmark sci-fi thriller series should make one wonder why there isn’t more official spin-off or attempts at spin-offs/reboots/etc. (even after that reboot a few years ago) Perhaps, the schedules of Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny may prohibit it, but the X-Files brand is still pretty strong, especially as we are all in the peak of 90s nostalgia at this point in time, and would probably worth developing some sort of “X-Files TV universe”.

Thus, the announcement of an animated, comedic spin-off of the X-Files at Fox doesn’t entirely come as a surprise, especially as another animated spin-off of a sci-fi series is already streaming, Star Trek: Lower Decks on CBS All Access. This branch of the X-Files will presumably be set in Albuquerque hence the current title X-Files: Albuquerque. Any other details for the series are scarce, but Duchovny and Anderson are not involved with this project at this point in time. The mastermind behind the original X-Files, Chris Carter is attached to EP and has us thoroughly curious as to how will opt to pivot the tone to work for an animated comedy.

We’ll just have to patiently wait and see if the truth, albeit done more cheekily and as a cartoon, is out there again.

HBO’s Latest Dramedy “Gösta” Hails From Sweden

News
gosta, hbo, Lukas Moodysson

Lukas Moodysson, one of Sweden’s most celebrated directors or multi-hyphenates (Moodysson writes poetry and novels as well), is bringing his latest work, the series Gösta to America via HBO. This show, centered on the titular character who gets taken advantage of for being too charitable, definitely seems to fall in live with HBO’s shift towards exploring humanity in their comedy programming as opposed to the biting satires of Veep and Silicon Valley.

You can get a taste of the sweet, but subtly sharp dramedy of Gösta with this trailer, then look to get into on HBO and HBO Max starting this Su. Aug. 31st.

Pick of the Day: John Cleese on Creativity 9/9

News

Comedy legend John Cleese was planning to have quite the year with a world tour and a book that gives insights into his own personal process. Despite live events being cancelled almost entirely for 2020, Cleese did a virtual edition of his show Why There Is No Hope and is going forward with the release of his book that has a literally more cheerful title, Creativity: A Short and Cheerful Guide.

He’ll be doing an exclusive conversation about the book (which ought to be fascinating at a time where creativity seems to be hard to come by for a lot of folks) with Judd Apatow next month, Wed. Sept. 9th at 6PM PT/9PM ET.

You can (and should) get tickets to stream the discussion for $10 here.

The Palm Springs International Comedy Festival Is Next Comedy Festival Happening Virtually

August 27, 2020
News
comedy festival, palm springs, palm springs international comedy festival, virtual festival

A la Robert Frost, some comedy festivals are opting to take the road less traveled and opting for a virtual edition of a festival rather than postpone or outright cancel. So far in 2020, off the top of our heads, there has been virtual comedy festivals from Adult Swim, Austin Sketch Fest, Flappers Comedy Club, and the Pack Theater and, for the time being, it would seem that will likely keep happening as the pandemic persists.

Now, The Palm Springs International Comedy Festival is taking the virtual route from Sun. Oct. 11th-Sun. Oct. 18th and will be live-streaming shows that include Stand-up, Improv, Sketch, Feature Film, Short Film, TV Pilot, Web Series, Animation, and Music. While you don’t actually get to enjoy the trappings of Palm Springs for the festival, the PSICF is indeed happening and you’ll get to tune into their shows at your leisure for a whole week. Tickets are $10-$40 depending on how much access you’d like to have.

If you’re a stand-up that would like to get in on the festival, they are still taking submissions until Sept. 15th.

To submit, get passes, and more details, visit psicf.org.

Nicole Byer to Host 2020 Creative Arts Emmys Over 5 Nights

August 27, 2020
News
creative arts emmys, emmys, host, nicole byer

The world would be a better place if Nicole Byer was hosting a lot of it.

Thankfully, that is happening. Already, she has a veritable empire of podcasts that she hosts/has hosted and she is rightfully earned an Emmy nomination for hosting Nailed It! on Netflix.

Now, she is being tapped to host The Creative Arts Emmys (i.e. the Emmys ceremony for the dozens of technical and niche categories you don’t ever get to see on TV), which is opting for a virtual experience to be streamed on Emmys.com over 5 nights. Since it’s streaming online, we can only hope that Byer’s let loose to do she wants and crack whatever joke, especially if it’s particularly blue, throughout her hosting run. Hopefully, this will lead to countless other awards hosting gigs for Nicole since, as stated above, the world would be a better place for it.

Catch Nicole Byer hosting The Creative Arts Emmys starting Mon. Sept. 14th-Sat. Sept. 19th at Emmys.com.

Drew Droege’s Amazing Solo Show “Happy Birthday Doug” to Stream as Special Next Month

(via Deadline)

One of Drew Droege‘s latest works, a solo show Happy Birthday Doug, might be one of the best pieces yet from the comedian/actor/storyteller/professional Chloe Sevigny impersonator. We were lucky enough to catch Droege throw this up at Dynasty Typewriter and truly dazzled at Droege cleverly and deftly playing every character at a hysterically, disastrous 41st birthday of the titular character.

Droege managed to have an exclusive performance of Happy Birthday Doug taped by before lockdown and now, it will now go to streaming as a special on the BroadwayHD streaming service on Thurs. Sept. 24th.

We’ll keep you in the loop about when it does start streaming as this will be your latest chance to great theater that was captured right before lockdown happened.

benefit show, jes tom, Jessica Henderson, Joe Castle Baker, kate berlant, lgbtq, Meg Stalter, naomi ekperigin, nori reed, patti harrison, safe housing, sarah squirm, Spike Einbinder, trans lives matter

Nori Reed is a great comedian that blessed LA with her presence in moving down from SF not too long ago. She is also a trans woman who, tragically, is in need of safe housing due to being forced out earlier this month by a bigot she was living with.

So, there is a big benefit live-stream comedy show next month that aims to raise enough money to help her live and thrive in a space that she deserves. Safe Housing 4 Nori Reed will take place on Sat. Sept. 5th at 8PM PT/11PM ET and feature a terrifically stacked line-up of Kate Berlant, Patti Harrison, Naomi Ekperigin, Meg Stalter, Spike Einbinder, Sarah Squirm, Joe Castle Baker, Jes Tom, Jessica Henderson, and more TBA.

Pick of the Day: OHAYO! From Inside a Monster with Atsuko Okatsuka (Live-stream) 8/30

August 26, 2020
News
aparna nancherla, chelsea peretti, ever mainard, frankie quinones, rhea butcher, yassir lester

We were so excited to see a TV version of Let’s Go Atsuko: A Woke Japanese Game Show with Atsuko Okatsuka, but it would seem that COVID-19 has put that on hold like it has pretty much everything on this planet.

Fret not as Atsuko has been plenty busy in quarantine. She has kept Let’s Go Atsuko going in a podcast/web cast format AND she has started a new variety show OHAYO! that will have a live-stream debut this weekend via Dynasty Typewriter. It would be just enough to have Okatsuka to helm the show and have a fine round-up of variety acts, but Atsuko has taken it a fun-loving step further by having broadcasting and hosting the show while in the belly of a furry monster. That is the sort of absurdist break from reality we need while we’re are actually stuck in our houses from plenty of real monsters of viruses, systemic oppression, climate change, etc.

This first OHAYO! this Sun. Aug. 30th at 6PM PT/9PM ET will have a damn good line-up of Yassir Lester, Frankie Quinones, Aparna Nancherla, Frankie Quiñones, Chelsea Peretti, and Ever Mainard.

Tickets are only $5 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

97.9 The Rat Race, Our Favorite Dark Comedy Morning Zoo Radio Satire Podcast, Is Coming Back on All Things Comedy

August 25, 2020
News
979 the rat race, all things comedy, ben roy, beth hoyt, chris marrs, comedy podcast, morning zoo radio, satire

Of the send-ups of the so-called “morning zoo radio” that have existed in comedy over the last several years (and there are a fair amount as dealing with morning radio jocks is often the bane of comedians’ existence), 97.9 The Rat Race is absolutely one of our favorites. Ben Roy, Chris Marrs, and Beth Hoyt nail the voices and the problematic behaviors of such morning hosts between the trio of Donny D, Animal, and Tara and then take every episode to such a hysterically dark place that, for us at least, we kind of hoped a lot of “morning zoo radio” would stumble into.

The episodes would come out every now and again, but we’re so glad to hear that All Things Comedy is bringing 97.9 The Rat Race to their podcast network with whole brand new run of episodes starting Mon. Aug. 31st. So, go binge the original run of episodes of 97.9 The Rat Race on your favorite podcasting platform right before next Monday, so you can get ready to see how some dark secret gets uncovered after Turn The Beat Around gets played again.

RATS! The biggest story of 2020 has arrived! 97.9 is now under the corporate umbrella at i?audio, which means #DonnyD, Animal & Tara are moving to @allthingscomedy! New episodes begin 8/31… and never, ever stop! Details below! #RIPDinkums pic.twitter.com/9bgkNGp28g

Robin Thede Signs Overall Deal at Warner Bros. TV Group

August 25, 2020
News
overall deal, robin thede, warner brothers, warner brothers tv

(via Deadline)

From The Nightly Show to The Rundown with Robin Thede to A Black Lady Sketch Show, Robin Thede has steadily risen as a power player in comedy television. Her profile just got raised even higher as she just signed an overall deal to develop programming for Warner Bros. TV properties over the next several years. Thede’s done so many things over the years

Not only does Thede deserve such a deal for her track record over the last several years, but this is definitely the sort of the equity that Hollywood needs in putting BIPOC in true positions of power. It wasn’t too long ago that Larry Wilmore got put in a similar position allowing him to bring Issa Rae to HBO to make the sensation that is Insecure.

So, we’re incredibly intrigued to see what Thede will get on to TV/computer screens next in the not so distant future.
