January 28, 2021
News
channel 101, indie tv, short form

Channel 101, the vaunted, long-standing indie short form TV series is still standing strong as we head towards a year of being locked down due to COVID-19. Though virtual, they’ve been as active as they have ever been with their monthly screenings (in addition to whole new audio series program they started a few months back).

Their first screening for 2021 is set for this Saturday with an early and late screening at 8PM PT/11PM ET and 10PM PT/1AM ET respectively. You can tune into this brand spankin’ new edition of Channel 101 on their Twitch at twitch.tv/channel101official/.

Also, note that you can (and maybe should) always submit your own Channel 101 pilot to enter into the Channel 101 fray. Get more info on that here.

Merging of Late Night and Sketch Comedy Emmy Categories Sparks Ire and a Joint Letter

January 27, 2021
News
controversy, emmys, late night, sketch comedy

(via Deadline)

Comedy already comes up with the short straw during awards season and it looks like it’s going to get more unfair with the Emmys, as of this year, combining the nominees in late night comedy and sketch comedy together rather than have their own separate categories as was the rule for so long.

Networks and showrunners are set to submit a letter to the Academy of TV Arts & Sciences to reverse the change for the upcoming Primetime Emmys.

It might seem like a niche issue, especially during a pandemic, but, again, the squeezing of recognition for comedy at a major awards is worrisome in the long run. Also, for those who aren’t aware, late night may have sketches here and there, but it’s definitely its own realm that is decidedly different in tone, pacing, and format to any sort of sketch comedy series. Would you really pit Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and Late Night with Seth Meyers against A Black Lady Sketch Show I Think You Should Leave or Aunty Donna’s Big Ol’ House of Fun?

If you would, then we’d kindly ask you to think about the potential notoriety and opportunity that could come for writers/showrunners/the shows themselves from having separate awards for late night and sketch and how much that could do for pushing comedy forward. Very seriously, how is there supposed to be room for great newcomers in late night like Desus & Mero if the field is dominated by perennial favorites like Colbert and SNL?

Reportedly, this controversy might even lead to a boycott of the Emmys (if they have to be done over Zoom again or in some sort of weird pre-taped, socially distanced way, would very likely be more exciting than the ceremony itself).

This year’s Primetime Emmys are usually held in September, so there is time for this to change and we’ll definitely keep you in the loop if that happens.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 44: Cole Stratton & Keeping a Major Comedy Festival Alive

January 27, 2021
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
chappelle, cole stratton, emmys, festpocalypse, sf sketchfest, stay at home order

The beginning of every year, as far as comedy is concerned, can be celebrated with the venerable SF Sketchfest, one of the biggest, most respected, longest running comedy festivals in the world. It’s three weeks of hundreds of shows and thousands of the best performers in comedy all over San Francisco making for the first big comedy event of the calendar year.

Of course, that can’t happen this year due to COVID-19 and SF Sketchfest co-founder Cole Stratton zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger about what to do in place of nearly a month of live in-person shows with one big virtual comedy extravaganza (and fundraiser for SF Sketchfest itself) Festpocalypse. Cole also details how doing improv has adapted to the virtual space as well as “hot” takes on Chappelle getting COVID-19, the CA stay-at-home order being lifted, and the debacle of combining the late night and sketch variety categories with the Emmys.

Oh yeah, we’ll remind you once more: don’t gather in person to watch the Super Bowl. Watching it alone is fine.

Follow Cole @colestratton on Twitter and @strattoncole on IG. Get tickets and more info about SF Sketchfest: Festpocalypse this Sat. Jan. 30th at 5PM PT/8PM ET here.

Little America & Female TV Leads Mark Nominations for Comedy This Year’s Spirit-Awards

January 26, 2021
News
abby mcenany, elle fanning, little america, maitreyi ramakrishnan, never have i ever, radha blank, spirit awards, the forty year old version, the great, work in progress

Unfortunately, it should come as no surprise that comedy is coming up short in nominations for awards even amongst the Film Independent Spirit Awards where comedies tend to have more of a chance of inclusion. The past year saw a lot of delays and postponements in releases both big and small, leaving lots to be desired when it comes to comedy.

Also, the pandemic made comedy, in so many ways, harder to figure out than ever before.

Thus, comedy only garnered a small handful of nominations for the 2021 Spirit Awards. Apple TV+’s Little America anthology series scored Best Series and two Best Male Performance in a Scripted Series noms for Conphidance and Adam Ali. Radha Blank’s excellent The Forty Year Old Version got a nod for Best First Feature. Then, the Best Female Performance in a Scripted Series category actually had Elle Fanning, Abby McEnany, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan nominated for The Great, Work In Progress, and Never Have I Ever.

FYI, Spirit Awards puts more emphasis to freshman TV series in case you’re wondering why What We Do In The Shadows is absent from the list.

There’s no telling what sort of signal this will give as to the rest of awards season and how comedy will fare. For now, you should watch all of what was nominated if you haven’t already (Never Have I Ever, Work In Progress, and The Forty Year Old Version are worth watching ASAP).

The Spirit Awards will be given out Thurs. Apr. 22nd, hosted by Patton Oswalt.

Get the full list of nominees here.

Pick of the Day: Self Care Comedy (Starting 2/1)

News
anna valenzuela, christine little, deanne smith, naked comedy, sean keane, self care comedy, sofiya alexandra, stand up comedy, virtual comedy

For most of 2020, we relied on @ComedyQuarantine on IG for a daily pick me up of a virtual stand-up show thanks to hosts Teresa Lee, Barbara Gray, Dominique Gelin, and producer Naked Comedy/Sam Varela.

Now, for 2021, you can look forward to another very solid and reliable daily stand-up show from Naked Comedy in Self Care Comedy, starting Mon. Feb. 1st at 7PM PT/10PM ET with another great round of hosts in DeAnne Smith, Christine Little, Anna Valenzuela, Sofiya Alexandra, and Sean Keane.

Monday-Friday, this Self Care Comedy crew will serve up some much needed daily relief in stand-up comedy with special guests on Zoom. A $10 donation is suggested for the show (doing a stand-up on all weeknights is such a big undertaking in case you didn’t know).

Search Party Season 4 Has Set the Bar for TV Comedy in 2021

January 25, 2021
News
alia shawkat, cole escola, hbo max, john early, john reynolds, meredith hagner, search party

It can be argued that we’re in strange, yet slightly familiar territory just a few weeks into 2021. Biden has succeeded Trump as POTUS and, while there are signs of Biden picking up where Obama left off, the threats of the ongoing pandemic and economic crises are keeping things plenty off-kilter.

Yes, there are very likely spoilers here, FYI.

In a similar vein, Search Party has gotten six episodes into its fourth season, now at HBO Max instead of TBS, and has lifted its own formula, turned it inside out, and really swung for the fences in how outlandish, dark, and absolutely, unapologetically absurd it’s willing to get (having Dory now go missing and being kept captive in a padded wall version of her apartment kept permanently lit for daytime). For that, it has unquestionably come out the gate for 2021 as the best comedy series thus far (and it’s going to be pretty hard to top).

The balance of the sinister kidnapping of Dory by Cole Escola’s brilliantly demented Chip and how satisfyingly ridiculous every single character is in the series (especially John Early’s Elliott Goss, both in attire and character arc as a turncoat conservative sellout) is something we’re left in awe of. Following the B-story of a mini-series adaptation of the events of the first three seasons Search Party with Meredith Hagner’s Portia playing Dory within these season 4 episodes ratchets up the hysterical bizarreness of the whole world even further. Often, you might be left breathless for how the show deftly shifts its tones, even better and more acutely than it has in the past, and how so much of the dialogue is so brashly funny.

It’s very clear that we’re still in dark times, but there are peculiar bits of light here and there and, for our money, this latest season of Search Party meets the moment we’re still stuck in and, most importantly, gives us something really damn good to watch on TV while quarantine continues.

Six episodes of S4 of Search Party are currently streaming on HBO Max and the final four are due out on Thurs. Jan. 28th.

Pick of the Day: The Worst Idea of All Time-And Just Like That… The Pilot 2/18

January 25, 2021
News
and just like that, guy montgomery, sex and the city, tim batt

Years ago, New Zealand comedians Tim Batt & Guy Montgomery embarked a mind-bending journey of watching the same, usually universally panned movie, every week for a year and recorded the results via a podcast, aptly titled The Worst Idea of All Time.

They survived four seasons of doing that, two of which involved watching Sex and the City movies for a year.

Now, that there’s going to be a new reboot of Sex and the City, a Kim Cattrall-less And Just Like That…, Batt and Montgomery are honoring this new round of SATC by doing a special virtual performance of their version of the pilot episode of And Just Like That…

For the oversaturated amount of hours of watching Sex and the City, this ought to be real fun.

The Worst Idea of All Time: And Just Like That… by Tim Batt & Guy Montgomery is set to live-stream Thurs. Feb. 18th at 6PM PT/9PM ET via Littlefield’s. Get access to the show via donation here.

Dave Chappelle Tests Positive for COVID-19

January 22, 2021
News
covid-19, dave chappelle

(via Pitchfork)

Dave Chappelle was one of the few comedians that could tour with all the sort of precautions that one can take to do in-person shows during this COVID-19 pandemic. He had been doing socially distanced outdoor shows in Ohio and had just started doing them in Austin, TX. Despite rapid testing for the audience and going through daily testing himself, it was just announced by Chappelle’s reps that Chappelle has contracted COVID-19 asymptomatically. There’s no trace as to how he specifically got it yet, but, as we all know at this point, the spread of COVID-19 is so rampant that there might be no telling where he got it.

He has since cancelled those shows that he had scheduled and refunded any tickets bought. There’s no word as of yet, but we can only hope that the rest of those Austin crowds are COVID-19 free.

It’s important to note here that no sort of gathering is entirely safe during this pandemic and that you can only mitigate the probability of transmission. Chappelle utilized all the measures available to him to try to do shows and somehow, he still caught the virus.

There will inevitably be a period where things attempt to reopen in earnest and for good as the vaccine distribution moves forward. Yet, this is a perfect example of why the protocols that scientists have put in place to combat the spread of the virus will have to stay until the majority of the world’s population gets inoculated. Essentially, things won’t be safe until we all can be safe and we can only wish that this lesson will stick very soon.

Pick of the Day: Dynasty Confidential for KTown For All 2/2

January 22, 2021
News
dynasty typewriter, jes tom, joel kim booster, josh sharp, ktown for all, megan gailey, mitra jouhari, Sydnee Washington

Now that 2021 has REALLY begun, transparency is going to be crucial if we are to actually “form a more perfect union”. In other words, let’s not keep so many secrets.

That makes Dynasty Confidential with Joel Kim Booster a perfect show for this time as Joel will virtually assemble some of comedy’s best to divulge their secrets, and then do with them as he pleases. Also, you’ll get to bear witness to whole the thing for what is a hilarious evening of revelations.

This particular edition of Dynasty Confidential will go to benefit the amazing org Ktown For All that advocates for the unhoused population in and around LA.

So, plan for Tues. Feb. 2nd at 6PM PT/9PM ET to live-stream Dynasty Confidential after you go get your tickets here.

James Austin Johnson Gives a Impersonated Summary of Joe Biden’s Inauguration

January 21, 2021
News
impersonation, james austin johnson, joe biden

For all the years that we’ve enjoy James Austin Johnson really giving us the most entertaining, not threatening impersonation of Trump, we will now get to enjoy JAJ doing his take on Biden.

Once again, he not only is a master of voices, but really distills the comedy so purely out of what’s going on these days.

Please enjoy this first take on Joe Biden with James Austin Johnson giving a very quick summary of yesterday’s events as Biden got sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.

Also, someone hire/pay James Austin Johnson a lot of money to do all of these genius voices/characters already (in case that wasn’t clear with how much we love him here at TCB).

Pick of the Day: Normalize Everything 1/30

January 21, 2021
News
atsuko okatsuka, byron bowers, jibz cameron, katy french, mental health, normalize everything, sadia azmat, valerie tosi

Some people felt a modicum of relief yesterday as Biden got sworn in as POTUS, but the wounds and scars we’ve endured (and are going to very likely going to continue to endure) need to heal (especially in regards to mental health).

Thus, a comedy live-stream on mental health, specifically great comedians sharing their lives that they’ve lead with parents with mental illness might be something pretty perfect for right now. Atsuko Okatsuka is hosting yet another Normalize Everything that is exactly that, thanks to mental health org Painted Brain.

This round will feature another grand line-up that includes Byron Bowers, Jibz Cameron, Valerie Tosi, Sadia Azmat, and Katy French.

Normalize Everything is set to stream on Sat. Jan. 30th at 7PM PT/10PM ET. All you have to do is RSVP for live-stream access and you can (and should) do that right here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 43: Aaron Chase & Doing Comedy Alone

January 20, 2021
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
aaron chase, iatse, man on the street, riverside, they ready, vaccine distribution

Performing stand-up comedy on a street corner, unannounced in Riverside might be quite the risky, lonely proposition. However, given the times of COVID-19 that we’re still very much in, we’re not afforded much else in live comedy.

Thusly, Aaron Chase, currently based in Riverside, has tried to busk on the corner, unannounced, with his stand-up that he feels he still is very much honing, to empty, socially distant chairs (though, sometimes, he gets a small distanced crowd of passersby). The image of it almost looks fresh out of a René Magritte painting, but Chase carries on, sharpening his comedy on his terms as safely as he can by doing it completely alone. Aaron goes over the journey to and through performing stand-up on the street alone and what he wants to do going forward/when the pandemic ends with TCB’s Jake Kroeger.

Also, “hot” takes on using live venues as vaccination sites w/union labor and Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready season 2.

You can follow Aaron @aaronchase91 on TikTok and on IG. Aaron’s One Man Show (and comedy) is streaming for FREE at your conveniece on YouTube here.

Pick of the Day: Daniel Lee Livestream Comedy Fundraiser Extravaganza 1/23

January 20, 2021
News
Ayo Edebiri, Camirin Farmer, dj douggpound, fat tony, Grace Kuhlenschmidt, jak knight, jo firestone, larry owens, nori reed, yassir lester

Well, it’s officially official in a way that can’t be more official. Trump is no longer POTUS and Joe Biden has been sworn in as the 46th President of the United States. Still, that doesn’t mean everything is solved. If anything, we’ve got a long, long way to go before problems at the federal, state, and local level are taken care of.

That’s why Sarah Squirm is co-hosting yet another grand live-stream comedy fundraiser, this time for progressive candidate Daniel Lee’s campaign for California State Senate. Per usual, Squirm has assembled a fiery line-up of folks we love watching and dearly miss seeing on stage. That includes: co-host Ayo Edibiri, Yassir Lester, Jo Firestone, Nori Reed, DJ Douggpound, Jak Knight, Camirin Farmer, Larry Owens, and Grace Kuhlenschmidt as well as musical guest Fat Tony.

Access to the live-stream this weekend is via paying what you can, leaving little excuse to not catch this live-stream. The Daniel Lee Livestream Comedy Fundraiser is set to stream on Sat. Jan. 23rd at 7PM PT/10PM ET. Get more details, donate, etc. here.

Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready Season 2 Gives a First Look

January 19, 2021
News
barbara carlyle, dean edwards, erin jackson, godfrey, kimberly clark, they ready, tiffany haddish, tony woods

You might have noticed that the flow of brand new comedy specials hasn’t been the way that it used to be early on in 2019. A lack of new specials and a drying up of networks and streaming services’ comedy special reserves have made it so that we don’t even necessarily get a new special every week. That’s just the way things are due to the pandemic and that will just have to be that way for a while longer.

That being said, there’s still specials to be enjoyed, namely the latest edition of Tiffany Haddish Presents: They Ready. There’s a whole second season lined up featuring comedians handpicked by Haddish herself to highlight. That includes Kimberly Clark (a long time personal favorite of ours), Erin Jackson, Godfrey, Tony Woods, Barbara Carlyle, and Dean Edwards (not to mention the joyful grace of Haddish presenting the whole series).

See for yourself what’s to come with They Ready Season 2 with this very first trailer here, then look for it to start streaming on Netflix on Tues. Feb. 2nd.

Pick of the Day: Dr. Katz Live 1/24

January 19, 2021
News
dave attell, Dom Irrera, dr katz, jim gaffigan, jonathan katz, livestream, maria bamford, rushtix

This week, amongst so many, will very likely prove how much we all need therapy right now.

So, that’s the perfect time for another virtual edition of Dr. Katz LIVE.

The famed animated therapist (who has done live, non-animated performances over the last few years), Dr. Jonathan Katz, will be holding another round of sessions with the likes of Dave Attell, Maria Bamford, Jim Gaffigan, Dom Irrera along with H. Jon Benjamin as Ben and Laura Silverman reprising her role as Dr. Katz’s receptionist. Both for the “clients” and the audience, it should be a healing, hysterical experience.

This live-streamed edition of Dr. Katz LIVE is set for Sun. Jan. 24th at 5PM PT via Rushtix. Tickets are going for $20 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

Watch Rosamund Pike Tap Into Her Dark Side Again in Trailer for Dark Comedy “I Care A Lot”

January 18, 2021
News
i care a lot, netflix, rosamund pike, trailer

The level and speed of greed that we’ve been subjected to over the last five years is at such a degree that it’s going to take awhile before we get to measure the full extent of the damage done by those profiteering off of the inequality of the majority of the world.

Accordingly, we have and we shall get more stories, movies, etc. of these times as we will be getting in the upcoming dark comedy I Care A Lot starring the sort of Rosamund Pike that you saw in her breakout role in Gone Girl. From writer/director J Blakeson, Pike goes to a whole new level of cunning by bilking invalid geriatrics out of their assets and, of course, that doesn’t come without eventually running into very severe consequences (delightfully in the form of Peter Dinklage).

See for yourself in the first trailer for I Care a Lot here, then look for it to stream on Netflix on Fri. Feb. 19th.

Pick of the Day: The Dollop Podcast Live-stream 1/21

January 18, 2021
News
dave anthony, gareth reynolds, the dollop

This week is indeed the week of the inauguration of the 46th President of the United States and because the 45th was such an evil nimrod, this week is going to be yet another momentous and very likely tumultuous point in history that we’re all having to live through.

So, it might be nice to tune into another live-stream edition of the radical comedy, American history podcast, The Dollop, to further understand and how the United States brashly lumbered and tumbled to where we are now. Also, Dave Anthony and Gareth Reynolds continually put the perfect dollops of comedic frosting on whatever dark corners of American history they’re covering and this latest live-stream episode should be no different.

So, you best get your tickets for The Dollop LIVE, streaming on Thurs. Jan. 21st at 6PM PT/9PM ET for $20 ($75 for VIP).

Please Enjoy “Scrunchie” from Amy Zimmer

January 15, 2021
News
amy zimmer, scrunchie

More and more these days, the need to breakaway, even for a brief, fleeting moment from everything that’s going on right now, becomes and more and more dire.

Something off-beat, absurd, otherworldly even is very likely the prescription to get through even a few more hours of the grotesque historical events that we’re living through.

With all of that in mind, you might very well enjoy this gem, Scrunchie, fresh from NYC-based comedian Amy Zimmer that’s part of Adult Swim’s adult swim smalls series.

To get the full effect, we’re not going to give you any context whatsoever and just let it do its magic (or else it might be ruined). So, please enjoy Zimmer’s Scrunchie here.

Pick of the Day: Wild Horses w/Naomi Ekperigin 1/16

January 15, 2021
News
dynasty typewriter, erin whitehead, improv comedy, lauren lapkus, mary holland, naomi ekperigin, stephanie allynne

Not only are Lauren Lapkus, Mary Holland, Erin Whitehead, and Stephanie Allynne are assembling virtually as one of the best improv groups that was ever formed in Wild Horses for their first live-stream of 2021, courtesy of Dynasty Typewriter, but they’re featuring one of our hands-down, all-time favorite comedians to watch, Naomi Ekperigin for this particular Jan. 2021 show.

For those unfamiliar (and we’re almost envious that you get to discover Wild Horses at this point), Lapkus, Holland, Whitehead, and Allynne check-in with each other in as good friends would at a bar or party along with their featured guest and then do their signature brilliant improv following that. Whether it be Largo, UCB, or wherever else they were playing, it was one of the improv shows we looked forward the most in the before times.

So, you best not miss your latest opportunity to catch them prance, gallop, etc. on Sat. Jan. 16th at 5PM PT/8PM ET for only $5. Get those tickets here.

Comedy Will Be Searching for Tone Well Into 2021

January 14, 2021
News
2021 comedy, op ed, post trump

Two full weeks into 2021 and you might have come across or just read a headline for an op-ed that is truthfully surveying where comedy is right now, where it has been over the past year, and where it might go post-Jan. 20th. Part of that self-examination has to do with the latest round of sobering bits of late night monologues that are attempting to search for a tone that reflects a certain bit of the zeitgeist (and boy howdy, what a crazy “time ghost” it has been thrashing about the collective unconscious).

And yes, this is our very own self-examining two cents on what tone comedy will take going forward.

Unlike 9/11 or any number of mass shootings where late night hosts would take on a solemn and respectful tone or even the night of Trump’s election win in 2016 where a certain sense of fear presided over jokes in some of the most ill-at-ease gallows humor that has ever been produced, this current moment is notably different. The world, no matter what side you’re on, is angry. That fury is mirrored back on Colbert and Seth Meyers in a different kind of sobering way. Dealing with the attack on the Capitol is the culmination of years of indoctrinating, dividing, and fomenting bigoted marginalized folks and the bleak roast-y feel of comedy right now is an accompanying plea for this nightmare to be over. That plea stretches from the rich wooden desks of late night all the way to the least followed comedians on Twitter.

To be clear, no one in comedy asked for Trump or even asked for a Trump like figure. Through 2015-2016, many simpletons thought that a Trump presidency would be “comedy gold”, but nearly any comedian knew what was coming and was already tired of making Trump jokes going into 2016. Yet, comedy persisted via taking shots at Trump because that demonic twerp pervaded everyone’s world every single day and you felt cursed into talking about him. A lot of it felt ineffectual, mostly because it’s incredibly hard to comedically exaggerate Trump (points to Trump vs. Bernie, The President Show, and James Austin Johnson in this department though). It’s only fitting that the most insane moments of Trump’s presidency come at the very end and leave even less breathing room for humor that isn’t insults paired with quick, explicit asides.

Supposedly, Jan. 20th will usher in a Biden/Harris administration that will have to deal with bringing some sense of “normalcy” to the country (for whatever that means in 2021) and dealing with many democrats/progressives/leftists that are anxious that they won’t be doing enough to fix the many systemic problems prevailing in the U.S. and worldwide.

Does that mean that we get an Obama era sense of humor?

Probably not.

It is going to take awhile to come down from how enraged we all are. Even though the need to laugh feels self-evident and so desperately needed, it’s too soon for comedy, whether it be in regards to comedians or audiences, to humorously process what we’re very much in the thick of. Also, the art form of comedy, one of the only art forms that is dependent on its response, is largely handicapped while the COVID-19 pandemic from being as sharp as it can be from being relegated to having to be online and appropriately adapt.

For now, we can only feel the fatigue in comedy at every level and prognosticate that it’ll have to be very new and different coming out the other end of Trump and the pandemic. If folks will want some time away from jokes about now and about reality and any of the tired tropes of comedy before Mar. 2020 (i.e. exploring binary stereotypes, complaining about the past not being the present, etc.), then we all better be ready for a bunch of folks really getting experimental (even more so than they already have because of COVID protocol) and going “out there” or being more truthful than ever before.

It’s uncertain (as is everything right now) what that might be, what comedy might sound/feel like for the rest of 2021, but comedy will be trying very, very hard to figure that out because laughter will be necessary in getting to 2022 and healing in whatever year we can actually do that.

Pick of the Day: What’s Your Problem, Sir? with Ever Mainard 1/30

January 14, 2021
News
crowd work, ever mainard, solo show

The freewheelin’ spirit of Ever Mainard makes their comedy dynamic and enthralling and it’s definitely something we dearly miss seeing live in person.

Thus, we’re really looking forward to the exclusive virtual show they’re doing come Sat. Jan. 30th where it’ll be a deep dive into the eternal question, “What’s your problem?” Mainard is set for this “wild night of vulnerable comedy” that is very likely the bit of the catharsis that many of us need as we can only shout at our walls in quarantine for only so long.

What’s Your Problem, Sir? with Ever Mainard is set to live-stream on Sat. Jan. 30th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Tickets are going for the nice price of $5 and you can (and should) get them here.

Insecure to Close Out Series With Fifth Season

January 13, 2021
News
hbo, insecure, issa rae

Just on the heels of the announcement that Sex and the City is getting a reboot at HBO Max, Issa Rae announces that her own very sexy, wonderfully crafted dramedy, Insecure, the series that has arguably fronted HBO’s comedy brand for the last couple of years, will reach its end with its upcoming fifth season.

It would almost seem too on-the-nose that this latest chapter of the Sex and the City saga will be called “And Just Like That”. As HBO funnels its efforts into its streaming service, HBO Max, it seems like it will go a little more mainstream (it not a lot). Before the launch of HBO Max, all of HBO’s comedy specials were largely experimental (The Golden One, My Favorite Shapes, The Great Depresh) and Insecure represented a new perspective on dramedy from an shrewd black woman’s POV. The first run of comedy specials on HBO Max (the ones from Team Coco) have been solid, but they definitely run more along the traditional lines of stand-up comedy and HBO Max is tapping one of HBO’s most successful, well known IPs in Sex and the City.

And just like that, we’re back to something that harkens back to something more familiar? We’ll see in the long run if this becomes more of a trend at the premium cable network’s streaming arm and what that ultimately means. For now, just mark another season of Insecure as one more thing to look forward to as there are more months of staying indoors while chaos reigns outside in 2021.

Very excited to film our fifth and final season! We couldn’t have told a complete story without the tremendous support of our audience and the faith of @HBO. See y'all soon! #InsecureHBO https://t.co/3gsoDwSGDR

The very first live Dumb People Town of 2021 is sparing no expense, save for having to do it virtually, as opposed to a venue. The beloved podcast that has Jason and Randy Sklar and Daniel Van Kirk riff over the dumbest local news stories (of which there is an infinite supply) has been going strong with their virtual live-streams over at Nowhere Comedy Club.

This latest one should be no different especially the one and only Zach Galifianakis will be the special guest along with John Paul White of The Civil Wars as the musical guest this Sat. Jan. 16th at 6:30PM PT/9:30PM ET. It’s a pretty grand way to kick off a year that very well may outdo 2020 in sheer chaos.

In any case, should grab your tickets for this edition of Dumb People Town. They’re starting at $20 and you can (and very much should) snag’em here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 42: Mike Bridenstine & Rediscovering Comedy Panel

On the week of the 100th episode of his delightful podcast, Hunk, Mike Bridenstine recounts the long winding journey to that 100 eps. mark as well as how the pandemic inspired him to change his podcast format for the better, specifically by adding a panel discussion by comedian (a facet of comedy that needs reinvigorating in America). Of course, this discussion with TCB’s Jake Kroeger leads to several different, but deep, winding tributaries on the state and philosophy of comedy way. They cover the whole gamut of comedy’s past and very likely and not so distant future, especially in regards to stand-up comedy.

Also, “hot” takes on the new Sex & The City reboot and late night stand-up being done on a ferry.

Find Mike Bridenstine @brido on Twitter & @mikebridenstine on IG and listen/subscribe to Hunk with Mike Bridenstine wherever you get your podcasts.
