First Full Trailer for John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch Seems to Hint at a Kids Musical Comedy for Everyone

December 18, 2019
Uncategorized
john mulaney, netflix, sack lunch bunch, trailer

Leave it to the one and only John Mulaney to take his musical aspirations from SNL (Diner Lobster, Bodega the Musical) and go to a whole other level with something that’s parading as children’s musical comedy special, but has enough winks, nods, jabs, asides, etc. for adults to laugh to themselves and kids to ponder until they look up all the references on their phones.

Watch the first full trailer for John Mulaney & The Sack Lunch Bunch here, then look for it to drop on Christmas Eve on Netflix.

VHYES Trailer Has Plenty of Wonderful Weirdness for You to Enjoy

Uncategorized
found footage, jack henry robbins, nunzio randozzo, thomas lennon, tim robbins, trailer, vhyes

“Found Footage”, as a concept and genre, has been around for long enough to break its initial mold into something new and exciting.

That seems to be the case with the upcoming feature VHYES from director Jack Henry Robbins (and written by Nunzio Randozzo and Robbins) where a kid tapes late night TV and home videos over his folks’ wedding tape. The result is a déjà vu-laden run through bizarre late night TV from the age of cassette tapes weaved in with the journey of making home movies, perhaps for the first time.

The likes of Kerri Kenney, Thomas Lennon, John Gemberling, Tim Robbins, Mark Proksch all pop up throughout VHYES as you can see in this first trailer.

So far, VHYES looks like an offbeat, absurdist delight. We can’t wait to see what exactly is going on in VHYES when it comes out in limited release on Jan. 17th, 2020.

Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 10 Trailer Gives You the Yelling At/From Larry That You Know That You Want

It’s season 10 of Curb Your Enthusiasm and the trailer looks pretty, pretty, prettyyyy satisfying. Larry is a catalyst for subtle chaos that explodes to not-so-subtle chaos (and Jon Hamm does a pretty great Larry impression next to Larry).

You know the drill by now.

See for yourself in the first full, official trailer.

Season 10 of Curb Your Enthusiasm premieres Sun. Jan. 19th 10:30PM on HBO.

Maria Bamford “Weakness Is the Brand” Trailer Promises a Wonderful Bamford Special at the Top of 2020

For us, Maria Bamford is not only one of the funniest, most honest, poignant comedians of our generation, but, probably, of all time. She also happens to be one of the best human beings around (her commitment to fostering community still astounds us to this day) and that undoubtedly gives the beautiful colors that run throughout her celebrated comedy.

Come Tues. Jan. 28th, we’ll be getting a brand spanking new hour from Maria called Weakness Is the Brand. From the looks of the trailer, it looks like it’ll be a straightforward special, but given the scope of her last two specials, The Special Special Special and Old Baby, we wouldn’t be surprised if she does something “special” yet again. If not, Maria’s material is more than enough to make a great hour for you to relish (again, see the trailer).

Maria Bamford’s Weakness Is The Brand will be available at several streaming services via Comedy Dynamics on Jan. 28th and you can pre-order it here.

Armando Iannucci’s Avenue 5 Trailer Shows Off More of the Interstellar Cruise Meltdown

OK, we’re now seeing much more of the idyllic setting of a space cruise on the upcoming high concept HBO comedy Avenue 5.

The floating space paradise seems to be ruined by some sort of malfunction, which gives the perfect set up for those killer one-liner burns, traded back-and-forth at a mile-a-minute that are part of Iannucci’s signature style. Also, Josh Gad taking on a bit of a Michael Scott as a space tourism entrepreneur has a lot of promise as well.

Get a taste of all of that with this full trailer for Avenue 5 here, then look for the premiere on Sun. Jan. 19th on HBO.

“Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens” Trailer Shows Off Awkwafina’s Expanding Empire Moving Into TV

Originally, just a rapper, Awkwafina/Nora Lum has now expanded her reach into starring in movies (Ocean’s 8, The Farewell), both in comedy and drama, and, as of Jan. 22nd, leading off her own semi-autobiographical TV series about growing up in NYC as the one and only Awkwafina.

From the looks of it, not only is this Awkwafina maintaining a wide acting range, furthering her star power, and offering up something that looks pretty enticing to us, but it also seems as Comedy Central has the perfect series to follow-up Broad City with.

Take a look for yourself with the Awkwafina Is Nora From Queens trailer here, then look for the series premiere on Comedy Central on Wed. Jan. 22nd.

Joe Pera really has a knack for being a calming presence while also being one of the most unique and hysterical comedic voices right now. Certainly, any and all episodes of his show Joe Pera Talks with You made us feel better and more warmly about, well, everything.

Thus, the notion that season 2 is just around the corner is pretty swell. Get a nice whiff of season 2 of Joe Pera Talks With You with this trailer and then look for the premiere on Fri. Dec. 6th on Adult Swim.

Lucky for you, all you’ll need to see it come Tues. Nov. 26th is Netflix as Birbiglia taped it, somewhat in secret, as a special already.

As it explores both pros and cons of becoming a parent, it should be the perfect thing to watch before Thanksgiving. Get a taste of what’s to come in this trailer.

This new, upcoming series Work in Progress from Abby McEnany (co-creator and star), a staple of Chicago improv, looks to have lots of promise from this just released trailer.

We’re getting vibes of Paul Giamatti at his self-deprecating best, but it’s clear that Abby, “45-year-old self-identified fat, queer dyke” (that’s from the show’s own description FYI) is something wholly original and something we’re very much looking forward to seeing.

Once again, see for yourself in the Work in Progress trailer, then look for the series premiere on Sun. Dec. 8th at 11PM on Showtime.

This sixth and final season of Silicon Valley is really upping the ante with disrupting the whole tech world to a greater degree than ever before making Pied Piper, Hooli, and more have avoid complete ruin.

It will be curious if this is a glimpse into the not so distant future of tech (breaking of the biggest companies in the world, ad space taking over your video games, etc.).

Perhaps taking a cue from HBO’s latest row of comedy specials, the latest comedy special offering from Netflix, Jenny Slate: Stage Fright, will intercut between documentary footage and stand-up that paints a more complete, deeper picture of Jenny.

Slate, who jumps between starring in such movies as Obvious Child, performing live as a stand-up, and voicing wonderful characters like Marcel the Shell with Shoes On, has such a dynamic, undeniable charm, making you hang on to everything she says.

From the looks of Stage Fright in this trailer, we’ll get a bit of a better glimpse of what drives Jenny (the name of the special perhaps?).

Look for Jenny Slate: Stage Fright to drop on Netflix later this month on Tues. Oct. 22nd.

To call a comedy special “X” should denote that one will be going into some sort of dark territory, a place that Daniel Sloss is more than familiar with.

We can still remember people’s astonishment at the first tonal shift in the first season of Raphael Bob-Waksberg’s BoJack Horseman. It took so many people by surprise and then encouraged to beg people to watch all of the first season without revealing too much.

In the years since, BoJack Horseman continued to be one of the most innovative, hysterical, gratifying, and artful shows on TV, constantly reinventing itself and, if you think about it, never having a standard or typical episode.

If anything is to be expected, it’s that Raphael has a season worth of more surprises that are as funny as they are heart wrenching and this trailer for the sixth and final season of BoJack Horseman certainly backs up that notion.

Watch the Season 6 BoJack Horseman trailer here, then set a reminder for Oct. 25th and Jan. 31st as the premiere dates for both halves of this final season.

Jordan Weiss’ first outing with a series Dollface seems to take a big swing with following a woman whose world is upturned (played by Kat Dennings) by an out-of-nowhere break-up, starting to see cat heads on humans, and realizing she’s been lacking on female friendships.

There are echoes of the fantastical nature of Man Seeking Woman, but with a much different perspective and approach of course. We’re intrigued to see how out there Dollface is willing to get.

Starting this Wed. Sept. 25th at 10:30PM, FXx will be dipping their toes into the Adult Swim side of things with a cornucopia of short form creations, both live action and animated, in a series known as Cake.

From the looks of it, FXx will be swinging for the fences of going out there with these beautiful/trippy/weird/hysterical/absurd morsels.

You can get a nice little taste of what’s going to be served with this trailer, then look out for the series premiere of Cake at 10:30PM, Sept. 25th on FXx.

Watch Paul Rudd vs. Paul Rudd in Trailer for “Living With Yourself”

Uncategorized

If you could have double the Paul Rudd, why not do it? Sure, that’s just a fringe benefit of this sci-fi existential comedy Living With Yourself that positions an improved Paul Rudd versus a lesser Paul Rudd, but we’ll take more of the ageless Rudd being perfectly Paul-Rudd-ish in a movie from writer Timothy Greenberg and directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris (whose credits include The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Little Miss Sunshine respectively).

A bit of this premise was slightly explored in the film The One I Love with Mark Duplass and Elisabeth Moss, but this seems to get more into the “meat” of facing yourself, so to speak. They’ll have the room of a TV series to really get trippy and explore much more, which we’re on board for.

Also, we’d like to say that America should be prepared to be charmed by one Aisling Bea who co-stars here.

See all of this for yourself in the trailer for Living With Yourself here, then look for it on Netflix on Fri. Oct. 18th.

If you’ve enjoyed the super blue comedic brilliance of Big Mouth, you ought to know that you’re in store for some very explicit and magically real stories of puberty and coming of age.

The trailer for this upcoming season 3 of Big Mouth certainly makes good on that notion. On top of all of that though, it would seems that there’s a bit of a Queer Eye crossover that attempts Queer-eye-ing Coach Steve. Per usual, it’s going to be one hell of a season.

When first hearing about Taika Waititi’s project where a kid has Hitler as an imaginary friend, one had to wonder what exactly the celebrated writer/director/actor had up his sleeve (especially in these days where white supremacy seems to be on the rise again).

That being said, over years over great pieces of cinema, we should have faith that Waititi would deliver something special. From the looks of the just released full trailer for JoJo Rabbit, Waititi might be delivering his most poignant work yet. Thus far, it appears to be a sharply crafted satire that follows why being a Nazi is bad from the perspective caught up in the Nazi Youth, but still full of Waititi’s trademark playful sense of irony.

There’s promise here that might warrant timing whatever standing ovations that JoJo Rabbit would get in its opening week

See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for JoJo Rabbit’s theatrical release on Oct. 18th.

Razor sharp, unapologetic, outspoken, and often, brutally funny, it almost comes as a surprise that renowned journalist Molly Ivins never found her way into stand-up. Ivins made herself into a famous iconolast with her vast collection of writing whether it be for a Texas publication or The New York Times.

Nevertheless, this documentary about the fireband Texas-raised liberal pundit/journalist/humorist called Raise Hell: The Life and Times of Molly Ivins from director Janice Engel looks pretty damned entertaining.

Like Adam McKay’s The Big Short, The Laundromat looks to be a high energy, satirical takedown of how little oversight is happening when it comes to where the money goes and is hidden on global and national levels. Also, there’s a beyond stellar cast (Meryl Streep and Gary Oldman already stand out superbly from the trailer alone), a very accomplished director in Steven Soderbergh at the helm, and a few cheeky breaks of the fourth wall.

That’s all to say that we’re pretty on board for this and can’t wait for it to drop on Netflix and make it into theaters this fall.
