Coastal Elites Trailer Shows HBO’s First Socially Distant Original Production

August 17, 2020
News
coastal elites, dan levy, hbo, issa rae, jay roach, kaitlyn dever, paul rudnick, Sarah Paulson, trailer

The complete unveiling of HBO’s first socially distanced original production is just around the corner. Pretty quickly into quarantine, HBO put Coastal Elites into production with director Jay Roach and writer Paul Rudnick and very, very star studded cast of Bette Midler, Kaitlyn Dever, Dan Levy, Sarah Paulson, and Issa Rae.

The prestige of a network such as HBO wouldn’t dare settle for a simple lo-fi Zoom look even though every cast member has to perform a monologue to camera by themselves. So, as you can see in this very first trailer, they really make use of very dramatic lighting and subtle (or not so in Paulson’s case) set decoration to give some sort of stately, theatrical look.

It does come off as sort of a stage play with individual performances that exude the title “Coastal Elites”, but the more than capable cast has us drawn in just to see exactly what Roach, Rudnick, and HBO are attempting to pull off.

We won’t really find out until Coastal Elites premieres on Sat. Sept. 12th on HBO, but you can get a very sweet, but short taste in the trailer here.

Please Enjoy Trailer for New Buddy Road Comedy at HBO Max “Unpregnant”

News

HBO Max seems to be coming with the goods to make up for the transition of HBO having a new arm and folding HBO GO and HBO Now into the exclusive streaming service. They’ve got Team Coco stand-up specials coming around the corner, a new season of Search Party on the horizon, and a new buddy road comedy, Unpregnant from director/co-writer Rachel Lee Goldenberg and writers Ted Caplan, Jenni Hendriks, William Parker, and Jennifer Kaytin Robinson.

Starring Haley Lu Richardson and Barbie Ferreira, there seems to the same sort of promise of a fun loving coming-of-age journey as Olivia Wilde’s Booksmart offered last year, though with more focus on getting an abortion rather than having one last chance at partying properly.

See for yourself in the trailer for Unpregnant here, then, if you dig it, look for it on HBO Max on Thurs. Sept. 10th.

PEN15’s Season 2 Trailer Is Here and Promises More Pitch Perfect Teen Awkwardness

August 7, 2020
News
anna konkle, hulu, maya erskine, pen15, season 2, trailer

PEN15‘s first season was such a marvel, especially with the already crowded field of prestige coming-of-age dramedy in TV/film. It really can’t be overstated how magnificent Maya Erskine and Anna Konkle playing the teenage versions of themselves amongst real teenagers and really making that work seamlessly.

So, with so much critical acclaim and a fervent fan base, the second season has been pretty hotly anticipated since the credits rolled for the first season’s finale (maybe even earlier?). Luckily for us all, the second season of PEN15 is not too far away with a release date set for Fri. Sept. 18th on Hulu and there’s a trailer to remind you how wonderfully weird and great this show is.

Please enjoy it here.

News

Romany Malco, who you probably very much enjoyed in many supporting or ensemble roles for several years (Weeds, A Million Little Things), is taking getting top billing into his own hands by putting out his very first feature film that he has written, directed, and starred in, Tijuana Jackson: Purpose Over Prison.

Malco stars as the titular Jackson who is an ex-convict trying to become a self-help guru after his release as told through a documentary crew following his journey. From the trailer, there’s a certain, ironic charm to his aspirations to become a motivational speaker reminiscent of Greg Kinnear’s desperate motivational speaker in Little Miss Sunshine. Also, it looks like Regina Hall might steal several scenes throughout this film.

See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for it start streaming on VOD and play at select drive-ins across the U.S. here.

Corporate, one of the best dark workplace comedies in the entire pantheon of workplace comedies is returning for its third and final season next week on Comedy Central. If there ever was a time for seeing the inner workings of corporations unapologetically skewered, it would be now. It would almost seem like that feeling has been around for awhile, but it’s certainly more prevalent than ever with corporations putting their employees lives on the line during a pandemic just so they can all go back to work in person.

So, enjoy this trailer for the third and final season from creators and stars Jake Weisman and Matt Ingebretson following the never-ending quest of Hampton DeVille to own and run everything they possibly get their hands on here.

The final season premiere is Wed. July 22nd on Comedy Central.

The reverberations of Hannah Gadsby‘s last special Nanette can still be felt years after its release on Netflix. Even as the release of her next special Douglas is just a few weeks away, Gadsby herself is still surprised the profound impact that her groundbreaking lightning rod of a special had, the worldwide notoriety that came along with it.

Thus, this next hour is absolutely one of the most highly anticipated comedy specials of this year. From this first, full official trailer, we have a suspicion that it will deliver (especially after the final joke in said trailer).

News
hulu, ramy youssef, season 2, trailer

The first season of Ramy broke all sorts of new ground with the perspective that Ramy brings to the world as a millennial comedian navigating his identity as a Muslim in an ever-increasing fluid world . It was an eye-opening series not only for its cinematic look and feel, but Ramy’s unflinching examination of all his deepest fears and his genuine quest to find himself while also pondering what it means to be Muslim these days.

There is absolutely more of that in season 2 as you can see in this Ramy season 2 trailer on top of the ever-stoic Mahershala  Ali becoming Ramy’s spritual guide.

See all of this and more in Ramy‘s second season trailer here. Then, look for all episodes to begin streaming on May 29th on Hulu.

The Midnight Gospel, the adult animated series born out of a collaboration between Pendelton Ward and Duncan Trussell, is an absolute visual feast on top of probably being one of the more trippier things you might have seen in awhile. As such, it might be the perfect calming thing to watch (as opposed to watching another doc/movie/TV series about viruses and pandemics).

Just see for yourself in the just released full trailer here, then see if you’re not just momentarily put at ease from being transported as far away as can be from reality right now. Then, look for the whole series to drop on Netflix, later this month on Mon. Apr., 20th.

This Teaser for Hulu’s The Great Seems Like Spiritual Sequel to The Favourite

March 24, 2020
News
elle fanning, hulu, nicholas hoult, the great, trailer

There’s a certain mischievous panache to Hulu’s upcoming historical comedy that reimagines the rise of Catherine the Great aptly titled, The Great. If you watch this teaser and see said panache and are even somewhat reminded of the fantastic satirical historical comedy The Favourite, that might have something to do with The Favourite co-writer Tony McNamara being at the helm here.

Given that this is also following a struggle for power by a very clever woman at a time centuries ago when women were afforded much much less equality than now, this very easily could be considered as a sequel of sorts to The Favourite. Also, we could it seeing being a spiritual prequel to Death of Stalin with the bits of sharp dialogue we’ve gotten to see thus far.

In any case, we’ll be looking forward to seeing The Great drop on Hulu on Fri. May 15th.

Unlike Disney+, Apple TV+ hasn’t exactly gotten to ride the coattails of something like The Mandalorian. Perhaps, this super charming musical animated series from beloved Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard might be the thing to put Apple TV+ on the map.

There are clever songs with animated dance numbers, the comfort and familiarity of Bouchard’s aesthetics from Bob’s Burgers, and even Stanley Tucci voicing an evil 1%-er in the vein of a Captain Planet villain dead set on paving over Central Park to build more NYC high rises. See all of this for yourself in the newly unveiled trailer.

Certainly, we’re very on board to see what Central Park is all about. We’ll look forward to May 29th when it premieres on Apple TV+.

While Marc Maron has been very successfully pushing forward on the fronts of being an actor and one of podcasting’s biggest icons, Maron has thankfully, during all that time, kept to one of the things he does best, stand-up.

His dissection of his own anxieties as well as those of the world over his last several hours are real comedy gems. This latest special End Times Fun seems to promise that streak will keep going.

See for yourself in the trailer for End Times Fun right here, then look for it to drop on Netflix on Tues. Mar. 10th.

Even in the best/worst of times that Charles Dickens wrote about, the razor sharp writing/directing team of Armando Iannucci and Simon Blackwell (In The Loop) still manage to weave their dark, playful, quick-as-a-whip humor into something decidedly less political than The Thick of It, In The Loop, and Veep.

Without knowing too much about the movie other than following around Dickens’ David Copperfield, there’s a chance that Tilda Swinton might steal a scene or two.

See for yourself in the trailer for The Personal History of David Copperfield here.

Three Busy Debras rose through the verve of their own absurdist feminist humor in shorts that they (Alyssa Stonoha, Sandy Honig, and Mitra Jouhari) have made over the years.

Now, they stand at the precipice of a full-fledged live action Adult Swim series and we can’t wait to see what hilarious abstract hijinks they’ve crafted for all of us.

The Three Busy Debras trailer definitely gives a great taste of what’s to come and leaves us wanting more.

Look for Three Busy Debras to premiere on Adult Swim on Sun. Mar. 29th.

Trailer for Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch Is Everything You Want from a Wes Anderson Movie (Yet Again)

February 12, 2020
Uncategorized
french dispatch, trailer, wes anderson

In posting here about the wondrous and delectable trailer for Wes Anderson’s latest offering, The French Dispatch, it seems, to us, rather repetitive to comment on the signature look of a Wes Anderson picture, the routinely glorious and stacked casts within his films, how every frame could be framed and hung in a gallery, how quotable the dialogue is, how cool the soundtrack is, and the sheer dreaminess of his movies. If you have any hint of a notion of Wes Anderson, it’s very likely you already know about all of that.

Also, The French Dispatch very clearly seems to possess all of those Wes Anderson elements.

Instead, we’ll remark on how amazing it is that Wes Anderson has created such a mystique about him as well as delivering on said mystique with every new work that he can (and most likely will) keep making films that are oft described as “so Wes Anderson” or “the most Wes Anderson that Wes Anderson can be” and we all still love it. Any reinvention by Anderson is oh so slight and probably undetectable on a first viewing. It’s the magic trick that we never get tired of and certainly The French Dispatch seems like it will be keeping that streak going and we personally can’t wait for July 24th when it comes out.

For now, just enjoy watching the trailer for The French Dispatch over and over as you marvel at the small morsels of it that we’re afforded at the moment.

Get Your First Look at a Quibi Comedy with This Trailer for “Flipped” with Kaitlin Olson and Will Forte

Uncategorized

Up until this weekend, you’ve mostly come to know Quibi via a bunch of intriguing announcements of acquisitions, series orders, and additions to their development slate.

Yet, this past weekend, we got our first legitimate look at a scripted comedy series, Flipped, that honestly looks pretty fun. Kaitlin Olson and Will Forte is a pretty great pairing and a series that forces them to renovate the houses of drug cartels and other baddies has our curiosity peaked. Certainly, the trailer gives us some sort of sense if the Bluths of Arrested Development tried some scheme involving HGTV and we’re on board for that.

Even though there is a lot more to see before we can truly make a call on Quibi, they do continue to impress us.

See for yourself in the trailer for Flipped here, then keep a look out for it on Quibi on Apr. 2020.

HBO’s latest comedy special will continue their exploration of pushing comedy specials into, well, new territory. Whitmer Thomas, a comedian that charmingly wears his heart so prominently on his sleeve, has such an hour for HBO with The Golden One and will be blending original songs, original stand-up, and intimate vignettes of his personal life and family that 110% wonderfully informs all of his comedy.

Having seen Whitmer start at open mics here in LA, we’re truly marveling at seeing that this is where he has evolved to comedically. So, we’re very excited to see what he carefully and lovingly crafts with an entire HBO special.

Get a peek of all of this in Whitmer Thomas: The Golden One’s trailer here, then look for it to premiere on Sat. Feb. 22nd at 10PM on HBO.

BoJack Horseman’s Final Season Trailer Is Here

January 15, 2020
Uncategorized
bojack horseman, final season, trailer

BoJack Horseman seemingly came out of nowhere, years ago, with such a wildly high concept, even for animation, and then ended up being one of the most unexpected surprises for an animated series, sitcom, dramedy, or whatever else you want to try to call it.

What’s even more amazing is that it kept being an unexpected surprise by reinventing itself every season (sometimes, between episodes) and pulling that off. So many TV series have fallen short trying to attempt anything similar. BoJack’s reinvention became part of its key thanks to creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg and company.

At this point, we’re not entirely sure what’s going to happen other than us all getting another set of episodes that will be hysterical, heartfelt, meta, and, overall, damn fine television later this month.

Get a taste of what’s to come with the final episodes of BoJack Horseman in this final season 6 trailer here, then look for episodes to start streaming on Fri. Jan. 31st on Netflix.

From the Looks of This Trailer, “Better Things” Is Going to Make a Triumphant Return with Season 4

January 11, 2020
Uncategorized
better things, fx, pamela adlon, season 4, trailer

All things considered, Better Things is not only the vulnerable, gritty story of a single mom attempting to live her best life with a boatload of kids that has garnered plenty of acclaim over three seasons. The story of the series itself is also one of a gritty struggle with Adlon making the best series that she can from the get go, as both the lead and co-creator, then having to deal with the other co-creator, Louis C.K., and his #MeToo fallout while keeping the show at such a high level.

It really is a triumphant dramedy in so many different ways and season 4 certainly maintains that feeling despite presenting Pamela’s Sam with a whole new set of challenges with dating apps, dream cars, etc.

See for yourself in the Better Things Season 4 trailer here, then look for it it premiere on Mar. 5th on FX.

It’s hard to not watch this trailer for Apple TV+’s new comedy Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet and think of It’s Always in Sunny Philadelphia (it gets posted as a credit) and imagine the episode title reading “Mac Ruins a Video Game Franchise”.

What’ll be interesting to see here is how much of those It’s Always Sunny sensibilities stay intact for this series over at Apple TV+, who we’re sure are doling out big bucks to produce this show and snag the likes of McElhenney and company and are definitely a different beast than FX.

Also, it should be noted that Aparna Nancherla gets to show off how great she plays an apathetic employee once more. Hopefully, that happens plenty during the whole show.

Mythic Quest: Raven’s Banquet premieres on Apple TV+ on Feb. 7th.

Sure, it’s “not a spin-off” of the beloved absurdist medical procedural satire Childrens Hospital, but the spiritual successor to it, Medical Police, which features plenty of Childrens Hospital cast and creators (again, it’s “not a spin-off”) is going to give you that fix for comedy that’s so unbelievably daft, but so cleverly assembled.
