The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 156: Myq Kaplan & 2 Evolve 2 Enlighten

March 22, 2023
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
buddhism, myq kaplan

Well, it has been officially three years that The Comedy Bureau Field Report has been bringing you all the going-ons in comedy from every possible corner that we know about or discover. With that in mind, it’s magically apropos that the great Myq Kaplan returns to not only talk about his new-old album release Live In Between Albums and his upcoming Edinburgh Fringe run, but to dive deep into the existential nature of comedy through the lens of Buddhism and high-minded philosophy (with some ultra-clever wordplay thrown in of course). Myq and TCB’s Jake Kroeger do indeed go deep, but, as this podcast has done for 156 weeks, bringing it all back to the wondrous, relief-giving art form that is comedy.

Follow Myq @myqkaplan across platforms, get his new album fresh from 2018, Live in Between Albums, here, and get into his Substack, his podcast Intra Quest, and more on his linktr.ee here.

One of 2020’s Biggest Non-Virtual Comedy Events, Bring Back Laughs, Will Be Released via Comedy Dynamics

Back in 2020, when we’re all steeped in a different type of chaos and had no idea about when or how a vaccine would come about, our future (and by proxy, the future of comedy) was more uncertain than it has ever been in our lifetimes. Thankfully, there were enough clever and innovative folks that figured how to put comedy shows together unlike they ever were and, at that point in time, many of the biggest comedians, starved of any stage time, were up for anything.

One of the results from that mix was Bring Back Laughs, a big, socially distant comedy fundraiser, outdoors in a parking lot that boasted the likes of Roy Wood, Jr., Chris Gethard, Sam Jay, Rojo Perez, Myq Kaplan, Todd Barry, Carmen Lynch, Victor Varnado, Janeane Garofalo, Tone Bell, Nore Davis, Bonnie McFarlane, the Lucas Brothers, Hannibal Buress, Ilana Glazer, and Paula Poundstone. The Creek and the Cave, which was still in NYC at the time, partenered with Supreme Robot Pictures to throw this comedy benefit for Direct Relief that brought aid to impoverished or endangered folks around the country and the world.

“This performance is based on a series of comedy concerts Rebecca Trent was producing in a parking lot during the pandemic. The performers and the audience were so happy to get outside and benefitting a wonderful charity like Direct Relief is a cherry on top. This performance also made my wife think I’m cool.” said Executive Producer Victor Varnado.

It has been awhile since we’ve seen a pandemic era special, but we did remember seeing the pictures from this and thinking, while in LA, that we almost wished were quarantining in NYC at the time.

Thankfully, Comedy Dynamics is putting this out on all major streaming platforms, both for audio and video soon.

Myq Kaplan, Yet Again, Makes His Best Album Yet “A.K.A.”

May 7, 2020
News
aka, blonde medi, myq kaplan, stand up

The artistic evolution of Myq Kaplan is particularly fascinating to us as Myq has steadily grown and become a deeper, more evolved, conscientious, and even more clever comedian and yet, still maintained his core of playfulness and almost unrivaled ability with wordplay. You can see this throughout all of the albums, specials, and live performances that we’ve personally been in attendance for.

A.K.A. is the latest milestone along Myq’s path and, for our money, his most personal album yet with diving even deeper into his personal life, view on mortality, spiritual realizations, and journey with ayahuasca ceremonies. Though such subject matter might seem like all weighty topics, Kaplan’s bouncy energy, not unlike a pinball speeding around bumpers for pun and callback bonuses, is still very, very much present through every bit and story. In fact, there’s an air of effortlessness to Myq’s delivery of what has to be incredibly honed bits making Kaplan’s exploration of more heady topics pretty damn funny.

A.K.A. is available from Blonde Medicine on May 8th, but you can (and very much should) pre-order it now.

Brilliant comedian Myq Kaplan, who is currently hunkered down near NYC, the epicenter of the pandemic in the U.S., Zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger as his album A.K.A. is set to come out this week. Despite the severity of the outbreak, Kaplan maintains his signature upbeat, positive attitude and finds himself as busy as he might be sans the global catastrophe brought on by COVID-19 thanks to a healthy combo of staying present with the moment, meditation, ayahuasca ceremonies, and more. Also, they talk House Hunters LOL and Insecure’s season 5 renewal at HBO.

The Bitch Seat, hosted by Lyssa Mandel, is a very entertaining version of show and tell that features comedians who probably never thought that they would have to do show and tell again, much less with things that possibly make them cringe about their childhood.

This LA edition of Bitch Seat (it’s based in NYC), is happening this Friday and tickets are only $5. You can (and should) get them here.

Enjoy Myq Kaplan’s Latest Late Late Show Set

Indeed, this is not Myq Kaplan’s first “rodeo” doing stand-up on The Late late Show.

As Myq himself has said, the molecules have moved and the host is different this time around. Myq also does another bang-up job like he did in previous appearances on a set that had much more wood accents and a host from a different part of the Commonwealth.

Watch and enjoy it here. Also, you should get his album No Kidding too.

Myq Kaplan’ Latest Album “No Kidding” Might Be His Best Hour of Stand-Up Yet

Over the years, we hope you might have been as lucky as we have been in seeing Myq Kaplan evolve as a comedian. His latest album, No Kidding, is, thus far, the pinnacle of that evolution.

Starting from his early years with impressive feats of verbal and linguistic acrobatics, Myq has now worked his way to presenting a very colorful, dazzling tapestry of who he really is a person, comedian, and artist. He has got a big following in the autistic community, defends not having kids, and explores the virtues of certain drugs. That’s just the tip of the ice berg that you get off of No Kidding.  Of course, there are still plenty of threads of top shelf wordplay and clever callbacks that tie that tapestry together.

This might just be, as we mentioned up top, his best hour yet.

No Kidding was just released today off of AST Records (recent Grammy Award winners by the way) and you can get it on iTunes or on CD.

The always impressive verbal gymnastics of Myq Kaplan got coupled with a fascinating angle on whether it’s a better life choice to do drugs such as anything marijuana related or to have children.

The combination made for a great stand-up set from Myq on Conan that you should watch ASAP.
