TCB Debriefing 8/22/23: Michelle Wolf, NY Comedy Fest/Conan, Frasier, Wrecking Crew, America’s Funniest Home Videos

August 22, 2023
News
america's funniest home videos, conan o'brien, dave bautista, frasier, jason momoa, michelle wolf, ny comedy festival

1. Michelle Wolf‘s third special, It’s Great To Be Here, will be released in 3 parts (maybe it’s 1 part for every year that comics could do some sort of live comedy since 2020?) on Netflix, which will be only the second time, as far as we know, that has ever happened for a comedy special (the other time being with James Acaster). The release is set for Sept. 12th and you can take your first look at the special here.

2. The New York Comedy Festival has just announced a new marquee addition to their usually stacked line-up; two live episodes of Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend. Go get tickets here right now.

3. Following the nostalgia trap of Good Burger, Paramount+ is hitting Gen-Xers with that long-promised Frasier revival.

4. Riding a wave of positive reviews of Angel Miguel Soto’s Blue Beetle and top billing of Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa, The Wrecking Crew might be an action buddy comedy to watch out for (Deadline). Wouldn’t it be great to see something outdo The Nice Guys?

5. Long before YouTube, much of the schadenfreude content that people are obsessed with came from the long-running home video series America’s Funniest Home Videos (Variety). A new owner of the production company responsible for AFHV is set on putting at least a thousand hours of the show on YouTube on Facebook. We’ll be curious to see if Ridiculousness uses any of the same videos.

6. If you choose to play the self-deprecation card as a comedian, make sure you’re doing so in a way where the audience isn’t concerned about your own self-worth in silence.

Michelle Wolf’s “Joke Show” Netflix Special Shows That She’s Sticking Around for Awhile

December 20, 2019

Michelle Wolf and her comedy will always persevere. That seems to be the spirit of her latest special Joke Show, which began streaming on Netflix last week.

Though she was the last comedian to host the White House Correspondents Dinner (they have a historian do it now so Trump can be less whiny?), Wolf continues to put forth stellar writing in her stand-up that really dances around the “line”, a thing she has quite the penchant for. It’s a great reminder that comedy’s time honored tradition of not having “sacred cows” (even if the same sacred cows keep getting knocked down a peg) can still work in 2019.

Also, somehow, we feel like this is a tangentially a great reminder that Trump’s a wimp and can’t take a joke and that Wolf should be more lauded for never backing down.

Toronto’s JFL42 Has Everything From Carol Burnett to John Mulaney/Pete Davidson to How Did This Get Made? to Eric Andre

As you can clearly see in the flyer above, that headline could go way longer as the more fan-focused JFL festival in Toronto, JFL42, is packed with top shelf talent that covers so many eras, styles, sensibilities, etc. of comedy that it might be worth making the trek out to Toronto to see all of that in one week, especially if you don’t live in LA or NYC.

You’ve got some time as JFL42 isn’t until mid Sept., but you best get your passes and tickets now (the VIP Pass already sold out). Passes are going for $84-$199 (not including service charges). Go get more details and tickets/passes here.

The Break with Michelle Wolf Is Now Streaming at Netflix

Just a friendly reminder that a few hours ago, the first episode of The Break with Michelle Wolf just dropped on Netflix. You might want to take a break from barbecuing and go watch it.

And Here’s the First Sketch from “The Break with Michelle Wolf”

The premiere of The Break with Michelle Wolf is only a few days away, which is, we should again note, is less than a month after her performance at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Needless to say, we’re highly anticipating what Wolf and company have up their sleeves.

So, with this first sketch that just got posted, they poke fun at shoe-horning female lead characters into clearly-written-for-male leads without changing much (this parody trailer bares a satirical resemblance to the actual movie Equity). It sets a tone that has always been Wolf’s brand of comedy, equal parts biting and silly. It looks like Sundays will now have a double dose of satirical comedy from John Oliver and Wolf.

Also, in watching this, we had a good laugh thinking of Wolf as the “strong female lead” of her own show on Netflix.

The Break with Michelle Wolf begins streaming on Sundays starting May 27th on Netflix.

This Sunday, May 27th, Michelle Wolf will kick off her weekly late night series The Break with Michelle Wolf on Netflix complete with monologue, remote segments, bits, and an ultra fancy desk (in fact, it’s nicer than most late night talk talk show desks).

Of course, this is the second phase of Michelle Wolf dominating 2018 as she is just coming off of her spot on roast at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Also, we have a feeling that is the start of Netflix figuring out late night as they also have a weekly Hasan Minhaj show on deck too. We will all have to wait and see how true that notion is.

In the meantime, you can watch a teaser trailer for The Break with Michelle Wolf here.

While the Internet debates their biased nuanced takes on Michelle Wolf’s White House Correspondents Dinner remarks, forgetting that it has always been an unapologetic roast, we applaud Wolf for diving right into her set and not letting up for her whole 20 minutes with both poise and fury, especially since Trump skipped again, but clearly watched it on TV and whined about it on Twitter.

Also, thanks for Wolf letting us know that you can drop the F-bomb, which she did twice, on C-SPAN. Let’s hope that becomes a time honored tradition at the WHCD.

It’s a pretty great “trailer” of sorts for her upcoming weekly Netflix show The Break with Michelle Wolf.

By the way, it just so happens that Netflix just released an official teaser trailer for said show set for Sundays starting on May 27th.

Michelle Wolf Hosts the WHCD This Saturday and Her Netflix Show “The Break with Michelle Wolf” Premieres May 27th

This weekend, Michelle Wolf will be roasting the White House and the White House Correspondents as host of the Annual White House Correspondents Dinner.

Then, just about a month later, her new weekly topical series at Netflix, The Break with Michelle Wolf, is set to premiere. Trump will not be in attendance for either, but we’re sure he’ll be watching it somehow and probably whine about both on Twitter.

In any case, mark down 4/28 and 5/27 on your calendars.

Trump Will Skip the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Again Because, Of Course, He’s Trump

Trump Will Skip the White House Correspondents’ Dinner Again Because, Of Course, He’s Trump

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that a childish, ill-tempered, egotistical, sociopathic bully who is unfortunately President of the United States will yet again ignore the White House Correspondents Dinner, which is essentially (and has thankfully always been) a “POTUS Roast”. It should be noted that if you can’t take a joke, that’s one big reason amongst many big reasons you shouldn’t be in a position that used to be referred to as “leader of the free world”.

In an interesting twist, White House Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders will be in attendance and other White House staffers are encouraged to attend as well.

Michelle Wolf is hosting this year’s White House Correspondents Dinner and we have no doubt that will pull absolutely zero punches. What will be interesting to see if Trump tweets about it in real time and if Wolf would potentially to respond to it during the broadcast. That may sound crazy, but, then again, crazy is pretty normal these days.

Michelle Wolf Will Be Hosting the Next White House Correspondents Dinner

Michelle Wolf’s star keeps rising with a new late night show coming at Netflix and the gig of hosting this year’s White House Correspondents Dinner. She definitely is game for the task of roasting news outlets and the government, the main task for the host of the WHCD.

As Trump didn’t want to hear biting jokes at his expense delivered to his face, he skipped last year’s WHCD and with Wolf (a Daily Show alum and staunch feminist) on deck for this year, you can expect Trump to skip this one too.

In any case, we feel like Hasan Minhaj spared no fools in 2017 when he hosted and we’re pretty sure that Wolf will do the same, possibly even more so.

Michelle Wolf Is Getting Her Own Late-Night Show on Netflix

In the way that 2017 was the year of Netflix getting specials from Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, and Amy Schumer, 2018 seems to be the year that Netflix will be getting into late night/talk shows in full force with David Letterman’s My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, The Joel McHale Show with Joel McHale, and now, a late night show from fast rising star Michelle Wolf.

Just in a few years, Wolf has hopped from Late Night with Seth Meyers to The Daily Show while propelling her stand-up career all the way to an HBO special, Nice Lady.

Exact specifics (including the show’s name) of Wolf’s show have yet to be announced, but we have a pretty good feeling that this is going to work out quite well for Michelle and Netflix.

In a relatively short period of time, Michelle Wolf has gotten to be a go-to on both writer/performer on Late Night with Seth Meyers and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.

That’s on top of keeping her edge in stand-up sharp.

So, naturally, we’re glad to see that the day has finally arrived where her 1st hour long stand-up special, Nice Lady, will premiere this evening at 9PM on HBO.

Then, look for its premiere on Saturday, December 2nd at 9PM on HBO.

Michelle Wolf Will Tape Her First Hour Special for HBO with Neal Brennan Directing

Michelle Wolf, who you’ve probably seen rise from being a great stand-up to Late Night with Seth Meyers to The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, is now making her way to an hour long HBO stand-up special.

Between HBO, Netflix, Comedy Central, Showtime, and Seeso, you can now definitely see each network building up their reserves of comedy specials that they exclusively own and HBO made a pretty solid choice with Wolf.

It’ll tape this summer on Saturday, August 12th at NYC’s Skirball Center and the one and only Neal Brennan will be directing.

Here’s a recent set of Wolf performing in the UK at Live at the Apollo as a bit of a preview of what’s to come.

Now they’ll be getting even better with the addition Wolf as a contributor and writer. She has been a highlight of Late Night with Seth Meyers with all of her segments and characters that have been featured throughout.
