Pick of the Day: Will Ferrell’s Best Night of Your Life 2 (in LA) 10/21

August 11, 2023
News
beck, cancer for college, greek theatre, hasan minhaj, jon stewart, los angeles comedy, maya rudolph, patti harrison, rory scovel, roy wood jr, smartless, st vincent, will ferrell

Will Ferrell is doing it again.

No, not play basically the same character he was in both The LEGO Movie and Barbie, but throwing a big, blowout night of comedy and music in support for the amazing charity that is Cancer for College, supporting young people trying to make their way in the world despite battling cancer.

It’s going to be another “Best Night of Your Life”, a sequel if you will (as that is how it’s being billed).

Thus far, Ferrell has wrangled the comedic stylings:

Jon Stewart
Hasan Minhaj
Jo Koy
Patti Harrison
Roy Wood Jr.
Rory Scovel
SmartLess with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett.

AND music curated by Mike McCready including:

Stefan Lessard (Dave Matthews Band)
Beck
St. Vincent
Cindy Blackman Santana
Dogstar featuring Bret Domrose, Robert Mailhouse & Keanu Reeves
Jack Black and Fred Armisen who will perform as the one-time supergroup ‘Mike McCready and The Casual Acquaintances’
DJ White Shadow
Princess featuring Maya Rudolph

For that much show, tickets start at $80 (and go up to around a $1000). Still, at $80, that’s kind of a deal.

Will Ferrell’s Best Night of Your Life 2 is set to take over the Greek Theatre on Sat. Oct. 21st at 7PM and you best go get your tickets here.

Jason Bateman and Will Arnett Are Reuniting for a Different Kind of ‘Arrested Development’ This Holiday Season

November 18, 2022
News
jason bateman, maya rudolph, murderville, netflix, will arnett

The pairing of Jason Bateman and Will Arnett, for so many of us, is seared into our collective memories as Michael and Gob Bluth from Arrested Development. That said, it was so hard to get all of their collective schedules together for the Netflix seasons of the beloved series that it’s hard to say if and when another batch of episodes will come out somewhere at some point.

Fret not though as Bateman is joining in on some equally ridiculous chaos on Netflix, but under the umbrella of Will Arnett’s semi-improvised murder mystery comedy series Murderville. Bateman and Maya Rudolph will be assisting Arnett’s overly-grizzled detective character Terry Seattle in trying to solve the sudden and shocking murder of Santa and, in the best way possible, hijinks ensue (especially since Seattle is seemingly in his own perpetual, actual arrested development while trying to solve a horrific crime).

Get a first look at Who Killed Santa? A Murderville Murder Myster here, then look for it on Netflix beginning Thurs. Dec. 15th.

It was kind of the tease of the last season of Big Mouth that there is more to the world of Hormone Monsters and Shame Wizards than what we’ve seen terrorize or inspire the human teens going through the nightmare that is puberty. Thus, that will be the core of the spin-off series Human Resources.

The world of Human Resources will explore all sorts of Depression Kitties, Logic Rocks, Grati-Toads, and much much more and how off-the-rails their world is as well. Per usual with Big Mouth (or shall we say the Big Mouth Cinematic Universe), it’s stacked with a bright, shining, star studded voice cast that includes Aidy Bryant, Nick Kroll, Maya Rudolph, Brandon Kyle Goodman, David Thewlis, Randall Park, Keke Palmer, Lupita Nyong’o, Rosie Perez, Ali Wong, Helen Mirren, Henry Winkler, Janelle Monáe, and Hugh Jackman.

Get a full, rollicking taste of what that’s all going to be like (maybe even more raunchy than Big Mouth?) in this trailer here, then look for all episodes to drop on Netflix on Fri. Mar. 18th.

Quibi really did snatch up quite a bit of content when amassing their war chest before their launch a few months ago. Even though so many folks that opted in for a free trial didn’t stick around after said free trial ended, Quibi can still stand tall with some recent Emmy nominations and still having shows up their sleeve that might just catch your eye once they roll them out.

One of those series is coming very soon, Mon. Aug. 10th in fact, from Paula Pell and John Lutz called Mapleworth Murders. From the trailer, the series not only trails murderers in a humble, sleepy town, but also calls into question why (as with so many similar mystery/crime shows) have so many murderers in one place. Mapleworth Murders boasts quite the ensemble cast with Maya Rudolph, Fred Armisen, D’Arcy Carden, Tim Meadows, Patton Oswalt, Jack McBrayer, Pam Murphy, Ben Warheit, Annie Mumolo, Ike Barinholtz, Marry Holland, James Anderson, and Drew Tarver.

Whether or not you’ve got or still have Quibi, you can certainly enjoy Pell and Lutz’s joyful send-up of Murder She Wrote with its official trailer here.

As they’ve already hinted at, Nick Kroll and Andrew Goldberg’s animated comedy Big Mouth, Netflix’s latest animated series geared towards adults, will revel in the surprising highs and the gross lows of puberty. In fact, there’s a bit of magical realism woven through that might just set this series apart from other coming-of-age animated series.

See for yourself in the full trailer here.

Big Mouth starts streaming on Netflix on Friday, September 29th.

It would seem that Bill Burr’s F Is For Family paved the way for animated comedies dealing with childhood, but aren’t necessarily “family friendly”.

From Nick Kroll:

It premieres on @netflix September 29th. I cannot wait for people to see it! Cast includes: me, @johnmulaney @jennyslate #jessiklein #jasonmantzoukas @sordociego (Fred Armisen) #mayarudolph @jordanpeele and many more amazingly talented folks.

“Maya and Marty” Premiere Tonight on NBC

Tonight, NBC moves forward in expanding its variety show line-up with Maya and Marty. Unlike SNL, it has two permanent hosts in Maya Rudolph and Martin Short and will very likely feature way more musical numbers.

For all of the iterations that this show has gone through in order to premiere tonight (i.e. a special with just Maya to a variety show headlined by just Maya), you should check the series premiere out to see what NBC has come up with.

Oh yeah, the pairing of the accomplished comedy stars that can sing and dance, Maya Rudolph and Martin Short, is definitely worth catching as well.

Maya and Marty premieres at 10PM on NBC.

Maya Rudolph and Martin Short’s Variety Show Called “Maya and Martin in Manhattan”,  Premieres on May 31st and Will Have Kenan Thompson on Board

So, NFL Sunday is to Monday Night Football as Saturday Night Live will be to Maya and Martin in Manhattan on Tuesdays?

The live musical-comedy variety show that first starred with Maya Rudolph, but has since added Martin Short to share top billing and, recently, SNL’s Kenan Thompson finally has a name and a premiere date. Maya and Martin in Manhattan, which will undoubtedly be abbreviated to MAMIM, or maybe even MMM, will premiere on NBC on Tuesday May 31st at 10PM.

We suspect that it’ll be way more musical than SNL given Short and Rudolph’s penchant for funny musical numbers, but we’ll have to wait over two months to find out for sure.

It’s not often you get to hear about a love triangle in a romantic comedy where the triangle gets reversed.

Yet, that’s what Maggie/Greta Gerwig’s plan is in Maggie’s Plan from Rebecca Miller.

The trailer promises some good, screwball fun between Gerwig, Ethan Hawke, a delightfully accented Julianne Moore, and Maya Rudolph.

Look for it in theaters soon.

That Variety Show with Maya Rudolph and Martin Short Has a Greenlight at NBC

Did it take the success of a few live TV musicals to convince executives they should finally pull the trigger on this one?

Talk of a variety show fronted by Maya Rudolph at NBC, then later sharing top billing with Martin Short, have been around for years now. In fact, Rudolph already did a solid one-off special as a sort of proof-of-concept of the show. Yet, movement on the show from where we’re standing looked minimal at best.

Finally, this variety show with two consummate all around comedic talents (sing, dance, be funny, etc.) is going to series starting sometime in May, probably right around when Saturday Night Live has its season finale.

Speaking of which, we’re really anxious to see how a Maya and Martin variety show will fit in NBC’s comedy slate along side SNL.

The Cast of “Sisters” Uses Star Wars Toys to Say Why You Should You Go See “Sisters”

While Star Wars: The Force Awakens is poised to break every box office record known to man this weekend, it is still legal, as Amy Poehler and Tina Fey have been saying, to see both Sisters and Star Wars in the same weekend.

To hit that point home, the entire cast of Sisters including Ike Barinholtz, Rachel Dratch, and Maya Rudolph on top of Tina and Amy as well as writer Paula Pell went on Late Night with Seth Meyers and voiced various Star Wars action figures to say why you should go see Sisters.

Indeed, they do make a great case for seeing both.

Classy decor, formal attire, flowing libations, musical numbers, and Sofia Coppola are things that we’d guess would figure into a Christmas party that Bill Murray would throw.

Also, George Clooney, Jason Schwartzman, Chris Rock, Amy Poehler, Miley Cyrus, Michael Cera, Maya Rudolph, Paul Shaffer, and Rashida Jones might be in attendance.

So, why should the Christmas special A Very Murray Christmas be any different than that? Answer: It shouldn’t.

Watch this latest teaser to see what we mean, then look for the special on Netflix come Dec. 4th.

Looks Like Martin Short Will Be Co-Hosting Maya Rudolph’s NBC Variety Show

(via TV Line)

For those of you hoping, praying, having your fingers crossed, etc. in the hopes that Maya Rudolph’s variety special would indeed turn into a full fledged series, it would seem that you could take a break.

Maya Rudolph hosted a variety special last year that was being thrown into consideration into being picked up for a series at NBC. After the premiere, progress for the series was kept quiet, but it turns out that it’s not only alive and well, but it might get the likes of Martin Short as a co-host who will be sharing top billing with Maya.

If this keeps going forward into a weekly series, we’re curious if it’ll take the months that SNL takes off or run concurrently with it. Either way, Rudolph and Short doing big, funny musical numbers should be fun and will probably be a big hit online.

IFC will have its latest mini series adaptation from the fictionally legendary author Eric Jonrosh (Will Ferrell) and his “masterpiece” The Spoils Before Dying next month on Wed. Jul. 8th at 9PM.

It’s a meta tale of murder, mistaken identity, jazz and questioning tropes of the whole film noir genre.

You can a great feel for just that in trailer right over here.

Not that we had any doubts, but it looks the next installment of IFC’s Spoils mini-series franchise, The Spoils Before Dying, could be just as epically overwrought featuring one heck of a cast.

Already, they have Michael K. Williams starring and now, they have Kristen Wiig, Haley Joel Osment, Michael Sheen, Val Kilmer, Steve Tom, and Marc Evan Jackson returning from The Spoils of Babylon as well as new cast members including Kate McKinnon, Tim Meadows, Chris Parnell, Emily Ratajkowski, Andy Daly, Chris Mulkey, Chin Han, Jack Kilmer, Patty Guggenheim, and Bérénice Marlohe.

So, just imagine all of this cast in a noir-ish murder mystery that follows a jazz piano player, but does so according to the words of Eric Jonrosh (Will Ferrell in a beard, fedora, and fat suit).

The SNL 40th Anniversary Special Brings Back “Celebrity Jeopardy”, Got 23 Million People Watching, and Is Perfect Boost For SNL App

The Saturday Night Live 40th Anniversary Special was the gigantic, nostalgic whirlwind of a walk down Studio 8H that we were led to believe it was.

Cast members, hosts, writers, etc. from the show in 1975 until now were in attendance to pay homage to SNL not only as a show, but a cultural institution.

There was a big ol’ musical revue kicked off by Martin Short and Maya Rudolph as Beyonce, Weekend Update anchored by Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Jane Curtin, a touching In Memoriam tribute (that also has a pretty great burn at the end), and rare glimpses into auditions of SNL cast members as well as some folks that should have been cast members like Stephen Colbert.

Also, SNL’s Celebrity Jeopardy lived once more, complete with Darrell Hammond as Sean Connery and Norm MacDonald as Burt Reynolds,  and was every bit as glorious during its run in the late 90’s through the 2000s.

It should come as no surprise that this special scored a record 23 million viewers from last night (via Variety) and will probably have millions watching several of the clips over at Hulu and YouTube.

With all of the reminiscing of seasons past, it’s perfect timing on SNL’s part to push their SNL app that gives access to thousands of clips from the past 40 seasons.

If you didn’t catch the special last night, hopefully you’ll have today off to catch up.

Maya Rudolph’s Variety Show Still in Play at NBC

Following a solid showing by a one-off special, The Maya Rudolph Show is apparently in contention to go to series. It might be retooled in its structure perhaps, especially in regards to the balance between music versus comedy.

Still, it would be nice to see a fresh, new variety sketch show apart from SNL, even if Lorne Michaels is producing and many SNL alums including Rudolph herself are at the core of the show.

If this somehow gets Rudolph’s Prince tribute band Princess back on national TV, then we definitely hope this goes to series.

Tina Fey and Amy Poehler making a movie together is already exciting enough news, which makes Universal’s The Nest an already highly anticipated comedy.

Now that they’re former SNL cast mate Maya Rudolph has been added to the cast, The Nest will possibly be more fun when it’s already seeming that it will be a wire-to-wire fun movie. We wouldn’t be surprised if the cast for this will keep getting better and better.

NBC Starts Comedy Playground Initiative to Launch Two Series in 2015

NBC is making a bold, but great move, by looking for two new original comedy series via submissions at their brand new Comedy Playground.

There will be taking pitches that will be reviewed by a board made up of Aziz Ansari, Jason Bateman, Robert Carlock, Sean Hayes, Mindy Kaling, Jason Katims, Josh Lieb, Eva Longoria, Adam McKay, Seth Meyers, Todd Milliner, Will Packer, Amy Poehler, Craig Robinson, Maya Rudolph, Mike Schur, Adam Scott and Mike Shoemaker, then narrowed to ten projects for pilot presentations, then will greenlight two series to follow each other in an one-hour block.

We can only hope that they’ll find their next hit comedy series to follow Parks and Recreation and Community for next year.
