TCB Debriefing 11/22/23: Jay Jurden, Wellington Paranormal, Toy Story/Frasier, Will Arnett, Sheng Wang

November 22, 2023
News
don't tell comedy, frasier, jay jurden, jimmy kimmel live, sheng wang, toy story, wellington paranormal, will arnett

1. While we are glad that the laugh per minute metric is wholly outdated and not really relied on anymore, Jay Jurden gets more laughs per minute than almost any other comedian out there. He racks up more punchlines and tags than the most quick-witted multi-cam sitcom on top of being sinfully clever and incisive in his observations about sexual and racial identities. Witness the undeniable comedy of Jay Jurden in this latest set on Don’t Tell.

2. One of the best spin-offs of all time, Wellington Paranormal, a spin-off of the original What We Do In the Shadows film, will live on as a podcast (Deadline). Even more delightful is the fact that it will be a meta behind-the-scenes podcast with all the original cast members including Mike Minogue and Karen O’Leary playing their roles from the series discussing how the paranormal investigation mocku–err… documentary series was made.

3. So, there might be more Toy Story and Frasier potentially in the works? Pretty sure sequels had a pretty spotty 2023.

4. Will Arnett gets back to Will Arnett-ing on Jimmy Kimmel Live.

5. Peep these Sheng Wang tour dates. There’s a reason they’re selling out all over the place. He’s damn good and you shouldn’t miss your chance to see him. Tix at shengwangtime.com.

6. We’ll leave you with this: Squid Game: The Challenge producer Tim Harcourt, when asked about whether the reality competition series based off of the brutally anti-capitalist Korean satire series Squid Game misses the point of the source material in a THR interview, says:

“I take issue over the notion that Squid Game has just one point. One of the important strands was the capitalist critique. But it’s also a critique of how we are ingrained from childhood to be ultra competitive via these childhood games. It’s also about how people behave under pressure — and that’s what makes reality shows interesting. Even if it’s an artificial or conceited situation, how do people behave? It was also about camaraderie. Also, the drama was about people fending off their desperate circumstances to win a huge prize. Our show isn’t about people in need. It’s about people being presented with an opportunity. So we flip that on its head. So, yes, there is one element [of the original show] that people have latched on to that they think is being not served by a reality show, but I would say it’s a very small part of the original Squid Game.”

We hope this ends up being the source material for a sketch in the fourth season of I Think You Should Leave because that might be the most BS answer we’ve heard all of 2023 (and that’s really saying something).

Jason Bateman and Will Arnett Are Reuniting for a Different Kind of ‘Arrested Development’ This Holiday Season

November 18, 2022
News

The pairing of Jason Bateman and Will Arnett, for so many of us, is seared into our collective memories as Michael and Gob Bluth from Arrested Development. That said, it was so hard to get all of their collective schedules together for the Netflix seasons of the beloved series that it’s hard to say if and when another batch of episodes will come out somewhere at some point.

Fret not though as Bateman is joining in on some equally ridiculous chaos on Netflix, but under the umbrella of Will Arnett’s semi-improvised murder mystery comedy series Murderville. Bateman and Maya Rudolph will be assisting Arnett’s overly-grizzled detective character Terry Seattle in trying to solve the sudden and shocking murder of Santa and, in the best way possible, hijinks ensue (especially since Seattle is seemingly in his own perpetual, actual arrested development while trying to solve a horrific crime).

Get a first look at Who Killed Santa? A Murderville Murder Myster here, then look for it on Netflix beginning Thurs. Dec. 15th.

BoJack Horseman Will Return for Season 4 on September 8th (in the Desert?)

BoJack Horseman always leaves on such great cliffhangers and, with the way TV series are run these days, there’s no telling when the new season will answer the questions left by the last season’s finale.

So, today, those concerns were alleviated somewhat as the image above was tweeted out. It definitely gives us a date to look forward to for one of the best animated dramedies that has ever been and, perhaps, a clue where season 4 might start (without spoiling too much for those who haven’t caught up).

Get a Look at Mike Myers as “British TV Personality” Tommy Maitland, the Host of Revived ‘Gong Show’

It’s been quite some time since we’ve seen Mike Myers play a character in a sort of lead role outside like he did for the Austin Powers franchise.

Yet, with a sequel in the works and him donning a virtually unrecognizable get up to be the new host of the brand spankin’ new Gong Show, Tommy Maitland.

The Gong Show is already a bit chaotic as is, but we’d hope that with Myers playing the character of a renowned UK comedian and Will Arnett attached as EP, that some rather more insane stuff will happen to set it apart from America’s Got Talent and other reality competition shows.

In any case, you can get a taste of what Myers is like as Maitland in this teaser, then catch the series revival premiere on Thursday, June 22nd at 10PM on ABC.

Will Arnett Says ‘Arrested Development’ Season 5 Will Be Much More Like the Original

Rather than trying to plan around shooting schedules and piecing together multiple storylines from multiple characters, there will be more of the Bluths coming together in the upcoming season of Arrested Development.

So, someone’s wishes (probably a lot of people’s) have been answered.

We’ll see how much season 5 will harken back to some of the best seasons of televised comedy, hopefully, not to far from now.

If you’ve heard a podcast or two, you’ve probably heard of Audible, the service where you can listen to audio versions of books.

Well, as that worked out for them, they’re now getting into the original programming game via the new Audible Channels subscription service.

They’ve got plenty of great stuff including The Comedy Show Show presented by Will Arnett featuring high concept comedy shows (i.e. Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction) around the country, Hold On with Eugene Mirman that’s an in-depth storytelling show, Sounds Like America featuring stand-up performed from around the country, straightforward stand-up comedy on Limelight, and Bedtime Stories for Cynics with Nick Offerman.

Featured guests on all of these shows include Jim Gaffigan, John Mulaney, Mike Birbiglia, Maria Bamford, Kurt Braunohler, Jackie Kashian, Roy Wood Jr., Rob Delaney, Michelle Buteau, TJ Miller, Todd Barry, Beth Stelling, Ron Funches, Gilbert Gottfried, and way more.

If you have either a subscription to Audible or Amazon Prime, you get all of this for free.

If you want to get into any or all of this (and it sounds like a good idea), get more details here.

ABC Reviving ‘The Gong Show’ for 10 Episodes with Will Arnett Attached as Producer

One can only hope that one of the episodes features Arnett as G.O.B. Bluth doing his magic act.

40 years ago, America’s Got Talent wasn’t a thing along with the multitude of other reality competition shows that delve into the weird talents from all around the country. Back then, The Gong Show, which almost explicitly explored some of the weirdest acts they could find only to revel in hitting a gong to cut them short, was that weird talent showcase TV series.

Seems like a show that’s cut out for 2016, right?

ABC thinks so with a 10 episode order and none other than Will Arnett on board as an EP. There is no word as to who the host will be, but it wouldn’t be hard to imagine Arnett in that role as well.

We’d bet that since Conan O’Brien will also be there, pranks will happen.

SyFy is launching a live telecast from the world renowned San Diego Comic-Con and have scored Will Arnett as a host. Arnett will be bouncing around between fans, celebrities, sneak peeks, etc. over three nights starting July 21st.

Any takers on whether he’d run into more fans that would do his Arrested Development chicken dance or wear a BoJack Horseman mask?

A much more fun, blocky (literally) Batman is getting set to do business hopefully like he’s real life, grim counterpart that made over $400 million this weekend.

The LEGO Batman Movie got another teaser, even though it’s not due out until 2017, and Will Arnett might just be the most fun Batman in the entire history of the caped crusader.

Watch the new teaser here.

Next year, Will Arnett will reprise his role as probably the most self-obsessed version of the caped crusader in voicing LEGO Batman for The LEGO Batman Movie.

We’d also be up for watching a live action movie where Will Arnett and Galifianakis go head-to-head too.

The LEGO Movie spin-off, LEGO Batman, has its main cast set with Will Arnett as returning Batman, Michael Cera voicing Robin, and Zach Galifianakis being the voice behind The Joker.

It should be a fun meta-romp through the LEGO Batman universe, but fully expect to see articles sincerely comparing Heath Ledger, Jared Leto, and Galifianakis as The Joker.

March is just around the corner, which means The Late Late Show with James Corden is almost set to premiere. In the meantime, the interim period of The Late Late Show is still in effect and, this week, they have very intriguing guests hosts in Thomas Lennon, Lauren Graham and Will Arnett.

Lennon is scheduled for Mon-Wed., Graham on Thurs., and Arnett for Fri.

In addition to their hijinks, Weird Al Yankovic, Natasha Leggero, Nick Kroll, Matthew Perry, Tom Papa, Jimmy Kimmel, John Krasinski, and David Cross are all set to be guests this week too.

Take note that Lennon has voiced Craig Ferguson’s robot skeleton sidekick Geoffrey Peterson at The Late Late Show from time to time and perhaps he’ll do it again.

Find out what happens (two weeks ago, they had the Super Bowl Sharks on) by tuning in to CBS at 12:35AM all week long.

Looks like the business relationship of Netflix and Will Arnett is going to continue to flourish.

With Arrested Development already at Netflix and the second season of BoJack Horseman in the works, Will Arnett has scored a series order for his own live action show at the online streaming giant, “Flaked”.

It’ll follow a faux-guru, played by Arnett, living in Venice who desperately is trying to keep it together, which fits nicely in the pantheon of GOB Bluth and BoJack.

You can look for Flaked on Netflix in 2016.

While Craig Ferguson is set to end his run of The Late Late Show on Dec. 19th and James Corden isn’t taking over the role of host until Mar. 9th, CBS will still continue The Late Late Show with a grouping of guests hosts.

Announced today, Jim Gaffigan, Judd Apatow, Will Arnett, Thomas Lennon, and more will fill in during the winter at The Late Late Show.

As John Oliver’s run as host at The Daily Show ended up being a test run for his own show, perhaps the very same thing could happen during any of the weeks that any of the aforementioned interim hosts.

However, there is no word on whether there will be interim Geoff Petersons.

Jason Bateman is always a good late night guest with his stories, quips, reactions, etc. His panel interview from Conan this week is a perfect example.

Going through dealing with kids, how horrific a talk show would be for him to want to host it, and addressing the “bromance” with Will Arnett, Bateman showcases why Conan O’Brien asked him about talk show hosting.

On top of all the LEGO Movie sequels that have been planned for the rest of this decade as well as a Ninjago spinoff, Warner Bros. is now developing another installment of the franchise by giving the LEGO Batman character his own spin-off movie.

Also, to answer your question, yes, it will be voiced by Will Arnett.

There’s no doubting this is a smart move for Warner Bros. since the original LEGO Movie was a critical and box office smash hit. Note that, by 2019, according to their plans, Warner Bros. will have made and released 6 films under the LEGO Movie franchise.

The first look deal that Will Arnett’s production company Electric Ave. has at CBS has just paid its first dividends. CBS has bought their project that would adapt Johanna Stein’s How Not To Calm a Child on a Plane into a comedy series.

No talent is attached as of yet and the format (single camera or multi-cam) is still up for discussion, but perhaps this and Tommy Johnagin’s sitcom is the start of a new vein in comedy in development at CBS.

Despite Netflix being shut out of being recognized as a winner in any Emmy category this year, the online streaming giant is pushing forward with their own agenda.

Their first order of business today: give Bojack Horseman a second season.

Netflix’s first original animated comedy series hasn’t even gone a week since its release before getting the order from another season, but we’re happy either way to hear more of Will Arnett voicing a sitcom horse as well as having a stellar cast including Aaron Paul, Amy Sedaris, Alison Brie, and Paul F. CBS’ The Millers just got a lot more enticing with the addition of guest starring roles for Billy Eichner and Rhys Darby in their upcoming season. Eichner is set to play an ex-husband that has a crush on Will Arnett’s Nathan and Rhys Darby will play a sort of a fantasy novel series author/a George R.R. Martin type, perhaps.

So do be on the look out for that when it comes back Oct. 30th.

They range from a typical car ad to, well, something foreign and very adult. Watch and listen here.
