Pick of the Day: Return of Clown Zoo (in LA) 5/3-5/31

April 28, 2023
News
bill o'neill, chad damiani, clown zoo, clowning, Corey Podell, courtney pauroso, ian bratschie, juzo yoshida, los angeles comedy, max baumgarten, natalie palamides

LA weather is LA weather again and, as such, it’s a great chance for the intoxicating mischief of Clown Zoo to return from whence they came (the Old LA Zoo in Griffith Park).

That’s right, Bill O’Neill, Chad Damiani, Courtney Pauroso, Corey Podell, Juzo Yoshida, Natalie Palamides, Max Baumgarten, and Ian Bratschie will be assembling during your Wednesday lunch break at 12:30PM, if you have a 9-5, in the abandoned, uncaged animal enclosures to do some of the most rollicking clown you’ve seen, day or night. This run of the original Clown Zoo will happen just throughout May, so plan your Wednesdays starting next week accordingly.

Oh yeah, it’s still free to watch too.

If you’ve never been to the Old LA Zoo at Griffith Park, here it is on a map.

Pick of the Day: “That’s What He Said” w/ Natalie Palamides (in LA) 3/6-3/11

News
chad damiani, courtney pauroso, elysian, kimberly stuckwisch, los angeles comedy, natalie palamides, nate, zach zucker

Natalie Palamides put out one of the most groundbreaking comedy specials in recent memory with Nate. Her solo show as a “lovable douchebag” named Nate really broke barriers as to what an hour of comedy, especially a big time special on Netflix, could be. It was truly a must-see experience that mashed up comedy, performance art, and gender dynamics in a provoking, glorious, and unforgettable show.

So, with that in mind, you’re probably going to want to see Nate return to “tape a pilot episode” of a “multi-cam sitcom”, which is indeed happening at The Elysian next month. Already, we’re so intensely curious as to what sort of hysterical chaos is set to ensue, especially since plenty of beloved LA clowns are joining in on what is being called, “That’s What He Said”. That cast includes Paul Mabon, Zach Zucker, Courtney Pauroso, Chad Damiani, John Norris, and Kevin Krieger.

You’ll almost have an entire week to catch it as That’s What He Said will be running from Mon. Mar. 6th-Sat. Mar. 11th at 8PM at The Elysian. Tickets are only $25 and don’t be surprised if they sell out pretty soon. Go get ’em here.

Pick of the Day: Kvetch. (in LA) 5/18

Genghis Cohen, the Chinese restaurant with a side room that looked more like a humble chapel than a place for live, very secular comedy and music. It has been a go to place for comedy ever since we started covering the comedy beat in LA. Whether it was Abbey Londer’s stand-up showcase from over a decade ago (she was one of the folks large and in charge at Netflix Is a Joke Fest now) or Greta Titelman and Blair Socci’s weekly Tuesday show or the open mic run by now NYC comedy transplant, Nina Tarr, we found our way to Genghis Cohen someway somehow pretty regularly.

Of course, COVID put a stop of all of that for a long, long time.

Thankfully, they survived and comedy is returning to their delightfully intimate space, this time, with LA comedy staple, Alison Stevenson, and a brand new monthly variety show that will draw from the vast spectrum of comedy performers of all ilks and backgrounds that this city has to offer.

Aptly named, Kvetch., Stevenson will assemble the comedy stylings of Laurie Kilmartin, Nori Reed, Ify Nwadiwe, and Courtney Pauroso, which is one hell of a LA comedy variety. This first show is slated for a week from now Wed. May 18th at 8PM PT and tickets are $8 (plus 1 item min.). Go get your tickets right here right now.

This first week of 2022 has been greeted with daily cancellations and postponements of all things of all shapes and sizes. So, we’re doing our darnedest to find what to look forward to in the coming weeks (that hopefully doesn’t get canceled or postponed either).

Clown Zoo, the outdoor comedy juggernaut (made our 100 best list again), faithfully served the LA area on Wednesday afternoons to provide one of the most fun, ridiculous live shows of this whole pandemic. The abandon and chaos with which they do an outdoor, traditional mask show is one of the surefire comedy bets we can always count on. They (and by they, we mean Natalie Palamides, Courtney Pauroso, Corey Podell, Chad Damiani, Christina Catherine Martinez, Max Baumgarten, Ian Bratschie, Juzo Yoshida, Bill O’Neill, and musical accompaniment by Jim Venable) are making a triumphant return for 2022 this month!

On Wed. Jan. 12th at their coveted time of 12:30PM PT, Clown Zoo will reconvene for their standing weekly show at the Old LA Zoo in Griffith Park (still outdoors and still socially distanced) and, as a new and thrilling entry in 2022, the Clown Zoo bunch will be going indoors at The Elysian for a monthly show starting Sat. Jan. 29th at 8PM PT (proof of vaccination and masks required).

The Wednesday show is still FREE, but you can (and very, very much should) snag your tickets for Clown Zoo Presents for $20 right here right now before they very likely sell out.

Pick of the Day: The Sarah Vaccine Live + In the Flesh (in LA) 9/23

News
brain dead studios, courtney pauroso, dynasty handbag, jamel johnson, la comedy, maylee todd, natalie palamides, sarah squirm, sarah vaccine

Sarah Squirm‘s epic, delightfully twisted short, The Sarah Vaccine, is getting it’s very own in-person night, which is perfect for all of us waiting for that booster shot.

Squirm will be “IN THE FLESH” as will a fantastic line-up of comedians and performers from every freaky little corner in LA. That’ll include Jamel Johnson, Natalie Palamides & Courtney Pauroso, music from Maylee Todd, and a Dynasty Handbag original video (and there might be more to come). This sure-to-be-never-forgotten evening will take place at Brain Dead Studios on Fairfax, which rose from the long smoldering ashes of Cinefamily at the Silent Movie Theatre on Thurs. Sept. 23rd at 8PM PT.

Tickets are $14, all said and done, and you really best get them here.

There’s no way to know the extent of effects of this historic time of the COVID-19 pandemic right now (especially since we’re still in the thick of it all). Given that entirety of the world went through, there are literally billions of experiences that humanity went through over the last year and change. Rampant infection/death and economic devastation are some of the more obvious, colossal things.

However, the journey of individual folks is undoubtedly makes for the sorts of stories that will be passed down for generations, written in short stories, shared at the Moth, and be common ground to talk to strangers at a bar for several years to come.

Case in point: Comedian/clown/actress Courtney Pauroso’s experience in quarantine is something to behold. Just see for yourself in this “candid video” here.

As you hopefully know, the city of Los Angeles is going through another reckoning with its unhoused population, some of LA’s most vulnerable folks. The possible forced eviction of Echo Park Lake, where many unhoused people have taken refuge during the pandemic, is yet another tragic part of the longstanding homelessness crisis here.

There are many ways to support and give unhoused folks what they need right now. One of them is sketch comedy live-stream HotelTV‘s fundraiser for grassroots org LifeKitLA that supports people in need with basic essentials. This Sat. Mar. 27th at 7PM PT/10PM ET at the Pack Theater’s Twitch Channel, the comedy powers of Joe Kwaczala, Courtney Pauroso, Ali Lu, Chelsea Pope, Kyle Helf, Andres Parada, and Joe Hospodor will combine for some marvelous comedy videos and take donations for LifeKitLA at the same time (Venmo: @LifeKitLA).

Pick of the Day: Aesthetical Relations 8/6

We were truly taken by Christina Catherine Martinez’s first foray into the IG Live space with her comedy/art talk/experimental comedy show Aesthetical Relations. We’re still taken by the audacity of the opening, which has us still ruminating on its audacity and how she cleverly pushed the boundaries of the aesthetics of the Gram (in addition to have all sorts of weird and wonderful treats with offbeat characters, high art/literary folks, and niche, but thoroughly satisfying bits).

So, we wouldn’t dare let ourselves go without specifically telling you about the very next Aesthetical Relations that Christina would be exhibiting, which just happens to be this Thursday, Aug. 6th at 7PM PT/10PM ET over @xtina_catherine on Instagram. Very, very special guests include the hysterical Jamel Johnson (who possibly made the first legit comedy special in quarantine), Dr. Angelo Castoria, and clowning/character sensation Courtney Pauroso.

Until that time, please enjoy Christina’s personal announcement for this edition of Aesthetical Relations.

Stamptown, one of the premier brands of international comedy, is back in LA once more to present the prestige acts at places like Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Whether they’re yanks or from across a pond (or a giant pond), it’s a mind-bending variety night of comedy that has some of the best boundary pushing comedians around (Natalie Palamides, BriTANick, Courtney Pauroso, and, of course, hosts Zach [Zucker] & Viggo [Venn]).

Tickets are only $15 for Stamptown Comedy later this month on Fri. Jan. 17th. Go get ‘em before they sell out here.

FXx’s experimental anthology series Cake invites plenty of the most exciting voices in animation, comedy, etc. to make some really stellar short form pieces.

Courtney Pauroso, Ian Bratschie, Christina Catherine Martinez, Chad Damiani, Natalie Palamides, Bill O’Neill, Juzo Yoshida, and Max Baumgarten all make up many of the most frequently featured and oh so talented performers at the magical Lyric Hyperion Theatre along with artistic director Phil Burgers/Dr. Brown at the helm.

This damn fine troupe got to do a portion of Cake, which centers, quite literally, around two pink doors and they’re pretty great. Start off with this morsel here.

Many of the most decorated and celebrated performers of the renowned Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Melbourne International Comedy Festival will gather under the wondrous roof of the Lyric Hyperion for one hell of a night of internationally award winning comedy, Stamptown Comedy Night, of clowning, characters, stand-up, and so much more.

Just look and marvel at that line-up up there in the poster. Zach Zucker will even be presiding over the evening as his clown-inspired ideation of a stand-up, Jack Tucker.

So, don’t miss out on Stamptown Comedy Night, happening Fri. Oct. 11th at 10PM. Tickets are $15 and you can (and very much should) get them here.

Besides it being Neil Hamburger and the fact that it’s a very, very, very, very stacked line-up (perhaps almost worthy of a gala?), next Sunday will mark 11 years of Neil’s residency (the longest solo residency in the comedy scene that we can think of) at The Satellite in Silverlake.

If you need more reason to go, then just trust that we’re telling you to go because it’s worth it.

Get your tickets here quick as we have a feeling that it might sell out.

Often times, comedic actors and actresses put a collection of characters they’ve come up with in a montage and upload it to YouTube in hopes that someone will see it, like it, and that will lead to a great opportunity like SNL or something. However, that’s not all that goes into it…

Courtney Pauroso’s Character Reel is a “perfect” example of that.
