The Safdie Brothers and Nathan Fielder Are Making a Showtime Comedy Pilot “The Curse”

Throwing The Safdie Brothers, Nathan Fielder, throwing tinges of Nathan For You’s Ghost Realtor into a cauldron and seeing what comes out of it is pretty damn exciting. That seems to be what Showtime has ordered up with the comedy pilot for The Curse.

Projects for either The Safdie Brothers or Nathan Fielder undoubtedly have the attention of the whole industry these days, but all of them assembled together has our (and probably many folks’) wheels really spinning as to what madcap, meta, gonzo show their going to create. Thus far, The Curse will follow a troubled HGTV show that may be “cursed”. Also, Fielder will star as a husband of a couple that hosts said HGTV show and Benny Safdie will star as the show’s producer.

Given how both the Safdies and Fielder know how to ratchet up tension, we’d say that you should prepare yourself if this project gets the series greenlight from Showtime.

Funny Women Fest LA Is Taking Submissions Until October 14th

The festival is set to take place in Highland Park on Thursday, November 30th through Saturday, December 3rd and will help benefit the Downtown Women’s Center.

They’re looking for female performers in stand-up, sketch, improv, storytelling, musical comedy, sketch, short film, and pilot scripts. Fees range from $20-$50 depending on whether you’re submitting as an individual or a group.

That’s not a pretty good deal especially considering you’re helping an LA foundation that deals with women overcoming homelessness.

Again, the submission deadline is Friday, October 14th, 2016 at midnight.

Taran Killam Starring In and Craig Johnson Directing/EP’ing Showtime Comedy Pilot “Mating”

The vague, well-trodden premise a man re-entering the world of modern dating might just get enough intrigue from the guiding hand of the director and co-writer of The Skeleton Twins and Taran Killam getting top billing.

Also, this will be an anthology series that might end up going head-to-head with HBO’s anthology comedy series from The Duplass Brothers.

If you’re really sad about Chlidrens Hospital ending, you can be a little less sad now.

Announced today, Adult Swim has just ordered a brand new comedy pilot from Rob Corddry that follows those aboard the infamous Hindenburg on its disastrous voyage back in 1937.

The pilot will be in Adult Swim’s 15 minute format and, we’re sure, really out there in the best way possible.

Hopefully, this’ll get picked up in some way, shape, or form, just so we can what Rob has concocted based off one of the most recognizable disasters of all time.

MTV Orders Unscripted Pilot “Backup Plan” Starring Leonard Ouzts

Comedians seeing if they can hack it at various day jobs is almost always is a good starting point for a show.

MTV has just ordered an unscripted comedy pilot, Backup Plan, where stand-up comedian Leonard Ouzts will be trying different jobs with the idea that his 15 minutes of fame might be up soon and he’ll have to get a day job outside of comedy again.

Hopefully, this will fill that void left by Comedy Central not going forward with the show that had Hannibal Buress doing various hard jobs.

Adam Pally to Star in Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Fox Time Travel Comedy Pilot “Making History”

Fox is really feeling the high concept comedy vibe from Lord and Miller.

Already, Phil Lord and Chris Miller have Last Man on Earth at the network, which has proven itself a keeper for two seasons. Now, Fox is doubling down by having another pilot from the duo that mixes sci-fi and comedy, though dealing with time travel rather than what happens after the world ends.

Adam Pally will star in Making History as computer science professor that doesn’t seem to get along with family or students, but discovers time travel. He and two other friends will venture through time inevitably disrupting their lives in the present.

Oddly enough, Eliza Coupe, another Happy Endings alum, just got cast in a Hulu pilot that also deals with time travel.

Amazon Doubles Down on Jill Soloway and Orders “I Love Dick” Pilot

This is a good, common sense move by Amazon Studios.

Jill Soloway is responsible for a good percentage of Amazon’s critical acclaim from her series Transparent. So, it only stands to reason that the online giant would get her working on another project.

This time around, Soloway is adapting a 90s novel called I Love Dick by Chris Kraus, which follows a marriage unraveling, the birth of an artist, and an intriguing professor with the name Dick in the backdrop of Marfa, Texas.

It would seem that TV now has legitimate auteurs and they have more freedom than ever to do what they want because of a certain track record.

Jermaine Fowler to Star in CBS Comedy Pilot “Superior Donuts”

Jermaine is also going to be co-executive producer.

CBS is making good on their development deal with Jermaine Fowler and ordering a multi-cam sitcom pilot where he starts working at a donut shop in a neighborhood being gentrified.

We’re going to keep our fingers crossed as long as we can that this goes to series just so we can see Fowler on TV on a regular basis.

Tracy Morgan to Star in FX Comedy Pilot Written by Jordan Peele and John Carcieri

This is a pretty great way for Tracy Morgan to make a comeback.

The latest addition to FX’s comedy development slate comes in a pilot that seems tailor made for its star Tracy Morgan. Written by Jordan Peele and Eastbound & Down’s John Carcieri, Morgan will play a recently released convict after over a decade and a half of incarceration that has to adjust to normal society.

If this gets picked up (which, on paper, it sounds like it should), we’ll be curious to see if it falls in line more with FX or FXx.

HBO Orders Pilot of Bill Hader Hitman Comedy “Barry”

Bill Hader as a lonely hitman finding himself amongst theater folk in LA might just be good enough for a greenlight as far as we’re concerned.

While Veep and Girls are getting into their latter seasons, HBO is readying itself for its next few comedy series in the years to come. The Duplass Brothers’ Animals is set to premiere at the end of the month and adding a pilot of Hader starring in a hitman comedy sounds like a pretty great addition to their development slate.

The project, Barry, was co-written by Hader and Alec Berg, who we hope you know from Silicon Valley and Curb Your Enthusiasm, and we sincerely hope that it makes it air just to see what the two have cooking.

TruTV Reups “Billy on The Street” for Season 5, Expands Season 1 of “Adam Ruins Everything”, and Orders “No Dumb Questions” Pilot

TruTV is smartly putting their money on some of the strongest shows in their programming line-up.

Though moving around a few places over the years, Billy on the Street proved that it’ll hold up at TruTV and is getting a fifth season with ten episodes of Billy Eichner screaming pop culture trivia and running in the streets.

Even more impressive is freshman series Adam Ruins Everything with Adam Conover getting 14 more episodes on the back end of their first season.

In addition to all of that, Emily Axford, who is frequently featured on Adam Ruins Everything, is going to host a pilot currently called No Dumb Questions that will see if people know the answers to questions that most would consider obvious, possibly even dumb.

FX Orders Animated Comedy Pilot from Louis C.K. and Albert Brooks

FX is making the most out of their overall deal with Louis C.K.

With another season of Louie at some point, Baskets set to premiere near the end of this month, Better Things with Pamela Adlon in production, and probably several other projects that haven’t been publicly announced, FX and Louis C.K. have made quite the business relationship with each other.

The overall development deal he has at the network produced yet another project as C.K. is now working on an animated pilot with the great Albert Brooks. The pair will voice the lead roles, write, EP for this project, which is largely being kept under wraps, plot/premise wise, for now.

At this rate, we wouldn’t be surprised if C.K. got head his own network/channel/streaming service/etc. spun off from FX.

Comedy Central Orders “Corporate” Pilot from Matt Ingebretson, Jake Weisman, and Pat Bishop

Oh, we don’t know all the details, but really hope this goes to series soon because we suspect Matt, Jake, and Pat have something incredibly dark, but damn funny cooking.

Matt Ingebretson, Jake Weisman, and Pat Bishop have all made their way through the LA comedy scene doing stand-up and making various very funny sketches videos as Women Comedy, under their own names, etc.

Now, they’ve got their own pilot called Corporate, which will delve into the underbelly of the corporate world in a richly dark, satiric manner over at Comedy Central.

We can’t for sure, but perhaps it might be something a little like this fantastic Women sketch that Pat and Jake made awhile back.

TBS Orders Pilot From Finals Girls’ Todd Strauss-Schulson and Matt Fogel

Here’s yet another step in a good direction for TBS.

In case you haven’t taken note, TBS is giving themselves an overhaul. Already, they have a talk show from Samantha Bee and a sitcom from Jason Jones coming up. Now, they’ve just ordered a comedy pilot from the minds of Todd Strauss-Schulson, the mastermind behind the wonderful meta 80s slasher comedy The Final Girls, and Matt Fogel, who composed music on Funny or Die’s The Wire: The Musical.

It’ll follow two friends who are part of a generation of men that are embracing all their emotions. While that’s not much to try to imagine what the pilot might exactly entail, we’re pretty sure Strauss-Schulson and Fogel have something clever up their sleeve given their past work.

All in all, we’re really intrigued to see how good this new TBS could be.

Melissa Leo, Sebastian Stan, Ari Graynor, Dylan Baker, Andrew Santino, Clark Duke, Jon Daly, Alfred Molina…

…Robert Forster, Cathy Moriarty, Al Madrigal, RJ Cycler, Erik Griffin, and Stephen Guarino are all set for the comedy pilot that Jim Carrey has in development over at Showtime.

With the backdrop of the 1970s Los Angeles comedy scene, it’s good to see a mix of veteran actors and actual stand-up comedians currently based in LA.

We can only hope that gets picked up, so we’ll all be able to see what Carrey and writer Dave Flebotte have up their sleeve.

As Lena Dunham has hinted at Girls possibly coming to a close in the not so distant future, HBO has made the smart move in keeping her around.

If Girls ends, the feminist comedy streak at HBO might keep going with Dunham’s latest project which delves into second wave feminism in 1963. Explored through the lens of a magazine writer played by Lisa Joyce, Max intrigues us as a 60s period piece as well as a progression of Dunham as a sort of a TV auteur.

HBO Orders Pete Holmes Comedy Pilot “Crashing” To Be Directed and Produced by Judd Apatow

We knew it was only a matter of time before Pete Holmes got another show.

Pete Holmes has written a pilot about the time in his life where he just gotten divorced and was crashing on a couch of comedian friends, hence the title.

You’ve probably heard plenty about this on Pete’s podcast You Made It Weird, but seeing it actually played out on a sitcom is very intriguing.

It would seem more than probably that Pete would have all his friends on the show, which would mean we’d all get to see Kumail Nanjiani on yet another premium cable show.

MTV is getting further into the Nicole Byer business.

MTV just announced the newest additions to their development slate, two of which include the very funny Nicole Byer.

One is an untitled sitcom project that will star Byer and follow her having to live in the suburbs after burning down her apartment.

The other is a hidden camera show called Ladylike featuring Jade Catta-Preta, Nicole Byer, Matteo Lane, and Blair Socci running pranks that are meant to challenge social norms.

We’re curious to see how all this pans out as there could be promise in either of these projects.

NBC isn’t kidding around with comedy this pilot season.

Powerless is the latest comedy pilot ordered by NBC from Ben Queen that will follow the lives of the insurance company employees set in the DC Comics universe. Undoubtedly, an insurance company would fittingly have an ungodly workload in a world full of superheroes and supervillains.

Being referenced as The Office with a DC Comics backdrop, would their be an actually sinister Dwight?

Amazon Has Ordered Semi-Autobiographical Tig Notaro Comedy Pilot with Louis C.K. and Diablo Cody as Executive Producers

This means that Tig Notaro now has a documentary about her on Netflix, a tour special on Showtime, an upcoming stand-up special on HBO, and possibly a series coming to Amazon.

Today, Amazon has announced the order of a pilot that’s based on Tig’s life, right around the time where she recorded Live, that will star Tig as well. Both Louis C.K. and writer/director Diablo Cody have attached their names to the project as executive producers, which makes it hard for us to imagine this pilot not getting picked up to series.

At the very least, we’ll all probably get a chance to see the pilot since it will be on Amazon.

FX Orders Animated Post Apocalyptic Western Comedy Pilot “Cassius & Clay”

As far as we can tell, it sounds like Westworld meets Thelma and Louise meets Blazing Saddles or future Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid as an animated comedy.

Lake Bell and Kaitlin Olson will voice a badass bandit duo that goes back and forth between staying in and out of trouble, but ultimately getting into trouble anyway in a world that’s both post apocalyptic America and popularizes saloons again. Other characters will be voiced by the likes of Jeffrey Tambor and Susan Sarandon (AKA Louise).

Megan Ganz and Adam Reed from Community/Modern Family and Archer respectively, wrote the pilot that we’re curious if it’ll explain the reference to Muhummad Ali’s original name.

Still, this sounds intriguing on so many levels that we hope it gets picked up just so we can see what it would look like.

HBO Orders a Pilot of “The Gorburger Show”

Your favorite blue demon talk show host is back and possibly better than ever as they might be on HBO.

One of the gems on TJ Miller’s resume that probably doesn’t get enough shine is The Gorburger Show where he played a blue demon that looks like it fresh out of Big Trouble in Little China and switched off between terrifying employees of the studio he invaded and chatting with a musicians. Somehow, it’s less absurdist than The Eric Andre Show.

Now, HBO has ordered a pilot where Miller gets to return as Gorburger and will talk to the likes of Ed Helms and Johnny Knoxville and get to do even more crazy segments that blur the line between Miller’s genuine curiosity and the bloodlust of Gorburger.

Keep your fingers crossed that HBO gets more into the TJ Miller business.

Kristen Schaal, Brittany Snow, both Sharon and Kelly Osbourne, Natasha Leggero, Nasim Pedrad, John Roberts, and Titmouse Animation are all involved.

Kristen Schaal is serving as co-executive producer on MTV’s latest foray into comedy, an animated project called “Fancy Bastards”. Snow, Outcasts get made into the cool kids in town when they find out that they all have the same father who just happens to be a prince.

The two Osbournes, Roberts, Leggero, Pedrad, Roberts, Jessica Lowe, and Jameeliah Garrett will be the show’s very well rounded cast.

With the revival of Celebrity Death Match on MTV2, it looks a promising return for animation on MTV.

TBS Orders Alien Abduction Comedy Pilot “The Group” From Conan O’Brien and Greg Daniels

(via Deadline)

TBS is really stepping up their game this year.

Shows from Samantha Bee and Jason Jones as well as Angie Tribeca already has raised anticipation of the new of programming coming to TBS.

TBS/TNT President Kevin Reilly is trying to keep that anticipation up on the TBS end with a pilot from the minds of Conan O’Brien and The Office’s Greg Daniels.

Their project, “The Group”, is centered on a support group for folks that think they’ve been through an alien abduction as they’re profiled by a very skeptical journalist. Of course, he becomes unsure of what’s going on the further he explores their stories.

We’d definitely hope this goes to series just so we can see the pilot of this.

If this goes well, maybe all those fake shows that Conan makes faux promos for might get reconsidered?

Obvious Child’s Jenny Slate, director Gillian Robespierre, and writer Elisabeth Holm are reuniting once again.

Ari Graynor and Jenny Slate are set to co-star in FX’s newest comedy pilot, co-created by Robespierre and Holm, that follows them on a road trip across the country. If you’ve seen Obvious Child, you know that there’s probably way more bubbling under the surface than just that broad premise and we’re excited to potentially see what that is.
