Pick of the Day: All for Armenia Live Comedy Fundraiser (in LA) 11/3

October 20, 2023
News
armenia, benefit show, fundraiser, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy, ucb

The world isn’t technically at war, but it’s hard to feel like that the whole of the planet is even remotely close to being at peace. One could spin a globe with eyes closed and probably land on a location rife with violent conflict. As such, supporting any and all of the humanitarian aid you can, wherever it may be, is crucial.

That’s why James Adomian is leading a benefit for All for Armenia at UCB on Fri. Nov. 3rd at 10pm, since the horror in Armenia perpetrated by Azerbaijan still continues with ethnic cleansing of Armenians living in the surrendered territory of Artsakh (though you wouldn’t know it from the news).

Joining Adomian is a very stacked line-up of Reggie Watts, Phil Hendrie, Chris Estrada, Alyssa Limperis, Mary Basmadjian, and Nate Craig all for the nice price of $15 (right now). 100% of ticket sales go to All for Armenia.

Go get tix here before they inevitably sell out and, if you’re feeling generous, directly donate to All for Armenia.

Pick of the Day: Big Titty Boyfriend: A Comedy Show and Fundraiser! (in LA) 6/9

May 11, 2023
News
benefit show, los angeles comedy, sammy mowrey, stand up comedy, top surgery

The importance of top surgery for trans/non-binary folks cannot be overstated. At the same time, it’s still far from an accessible procedure for many, which is why there are very special benefit shows to fund that very thing.

The wondrous, sharp-witted Sammy Mowrey is indeed committing to getting top surgery and throwing their own stacked (ironically, we guess) comedy show fundraiser (that will also be raising money for Sammy’s friend as part of her own transition). The marvelously named show “Sammy Mowrey Is Your Big Titty Boyfriend” will feature many of LA’s very best trans/non-binary comedians including Nori Reed, Roz Hernandez, Hayden Johnson, Ever Mainard, and Jake Noll to name a few.

Sammy Mowrey Is Your Big Titty Boyfriend is set for Fri. Jun. 6th at 8PM at Permanent Records Roadhouse, one of LA’s new Eastside comedy hot spots (and where Sammy does their routinely terrific show, Permanent Vacation). Tickets are available at the nice price of a $10 suggested donation and you really ought to go get them here

Pick of the Day: lol climate change: a show (in LA) 4/6

March 29, 2023
News
benefit show, climate change, jenny yang, los angeles comedy, storytelling

We’ve seen so many official, peer-reviewed reports on climate change and how it is becoming more and more irreversible and the feeling that whatever we can do being futile seems to grow stronger every week.

That said, there are still actions to be taken and, more importantly, you’re not all alone with climate anxiety. That’s why going to a comedy show where comedians share their own tales of the ever more volatile climates we’re living in to get some community and catharsis in one go (and maybe even meet some folks to get together to take actual action).

The amazing Jenny Yang will be leading off climate stories for lol climate change: a show from the likes of Dylan Adler, D’Lo, Danielle Perez, Reem Edan, Blake Pickens, Kat Evasco, Esteban Gast, and Bianca Cristovao at the gorgeous co-working space, Second Home Hollywood, on Thurs. Apr. 6th at 7PM. Best of all, the show, presented by Yea! Impact, NYU Los Angeles, Good Energy, and Generation 180, is pay-what-you-can with proceeds going towards Meztli Projects, an Indigenous-based arts and culture collaborative in LA).

Again, a great way to alleviate doom and gloom is gathering with other like-minded folks and having a delightful shared experience like a live comedy-storytelling show.

Pick of the Day: April Fools: A Benefit (in LA) 4/1

March 27, 2023
News
benefit show, beth stelling, chris estrada, comedy show, cristela alonzo, elysian theater, glenfeliz elementary, live comedy, los angeles, rory scovel, sabrina jalees

Though April Fools’ Day has largely been tarnished by corporations trying to live up to their legal status as “people”, not all is lost for what should be comedy’s day of the year.

Kurt Braunohler, along with The Elysian Theater, is throwing a very special, very stacked evening of stand-up in support of Glenfeliz Elementary School. There won’t be any pranks (and telling you that there would be here would ruin it, no?), but you’ll get a night of LA comedy’s best including Sabrina Jalees, Rory Scovel, Beth Stelling, Chris Estrada, and Cristela Alonzo.

This April Fools benefit show for Glenfeliz Elementary is set for April Fools Day at 7:30PM PT with tickets going for $25 a pop. Please go get your tickets here.

Pick of the Day: Hilarious Habibis: A Standup Comedy Show Benefiting Human Rights in Iran (in LA) 12/5

November 18, 2022
News
aristotle athari, benefit show, Dan ahdoot, gena b jones, human rights, iran, lynn maleh, sarah fatemi, The Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights, Zahra Norrbakhsh

The protests in Iran might be turning to a revolution very soon. It was just announced today that three more protesters are being sentenced to death by The Islamic Republic due to anti-regime activities. Given that one death was the spark of this round of protests, this likely won’t quell the anger in the streets of Iran.

With that being the case, those protesters/activists/revolutionaries will need any and all support they can get in fighting for basic human rights and freedoms. Hilarious Habibis, the monthly MENA (Middle East/North Africa) comedy showcase at the Hollywood Improv, will be taking over the Main Room at the Improv on Mon. Dec. 5th at 7PM to raise money for this very cause via The Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights.

On the line-up thus far will be Iranian American comedians that you really ought to know if you don’t know them already including Aristotle Athari, Dan Ahdoot, Zahra Norrbakhsh, and Sarah Fatemi along with Hilarious Habibis hosts Lynn Maleh and Gena B. Jones.

It’s already a pretty great, well curated show and, with this edition, there’s an extra special reason to go get your tickets right here right now.

Pick of the Day: Shut Up & Laugh: A Comedy Benefit Fundraiser for Rescue Efforts in Afghanistan (in NYC) 8/24

August 23, 2021
News
afghanistan aid, atheer yacoob, benefit show, ismael loutfi, mohanad el-sheiky, ny comedy, sarah suzuki harvard, usama siddiquee

The ongoing crisis in Afghanistan right now is undeniably horrifying to see, let alone to actually go through. So many Afghans are fleeing and only certain pockets of the country are resisting the takeover by the Taliban and, as such, one can feel existentially helpless in doing anything about the situation.

That said, there are a myriad of relief efforts to support, one of which can be done through just going to a comedy show.

This Tuesday, at one of NYC’s new favorite underground spots, SESH Comedy, will be hosting an exclusive live comedy fundraiser, Shut Up & Laugh, presented by Nervous Laughter, with an amazing line-up of many of NYC comedy’s finest to aid rescue/resettlement efforts.

On the bill:

Usama Siddiquee
Ismael Loutfi
Mohanad El-Sheiky
Atheer Yacoob
Sarah Suzuki-Harvard

The show starts at 7PM ET and tickets are only $10. So, go get them right here and let’s sell this thing out for a great cause (and, also, have a damn good comedy show).

Pick of the Day: Vidiots Comedy Show Benefit 6/26

June 10, 2021
News
atsuko okatsuka, benefit show, dana gould, georgia hardstark, ify nwadiwe, mary elizabeth ellis, niccole thurman, vidiots

It was so exciting to hear that there was not only going to be a revival of the video rental institution that was Vidiots in Santa Monica all the way on the other side of LA county, but they were also going to open up a live theater in conjunction with it.

The pandemic hitting, of course, made us wonder what exactly was going to happen and if this dream new venue, ostensibly a Cinefamily for Eastiders was going to still be a reality.

Well, luckily, it’s still going to happen (the plan aims for a 2022 opening) and you can help that reality coming to fruition by attending a grand comedy show benefit hosted by two wondrous parts of two different generations of comedy in Atsuko Okatsuka and Dana Gould. Also, on the bill will be the great comedy stylings of Mary Elizabeth Ellis, Georgia Hardstark, Ify Nwadiwe, and Niccole Thurman.

Tickets are only $10 for a live-stream for this Vidiots Comedy Show Benefit set to go live on Sat. Jun. 26th at 7:30PM PT/10:30PM ET. Go get your tickets here.

Pick of the Day: Normalize Everything 12/19

December 16, 2020
News
atsuko okatsuka, benefit show, comedy fundraiser, jeena bloom, johan miranda, kazu kusano, maddie connors, mental health

With or without a pandemic, the issue of mental health is so vitally important and yet, even after all the progress that has been made over the last few years, is still not regarded seriously enough. With COVID-19 still keeping us so isolated, more so than most of us have ever been, the importance of one’s mental health has become more glaringly clear.

So, along those lines, wonderful LA based comedians Atsuko Okatsuka and Maddie Connors are hosting a special benefit show, NORMALIZE ANYTHING, that will raise money for for Painted Brain, a marvelous LA based mental health org.

Joining Atsuko and Maddie will be the very special comedic stylings of Jeena Bloom, Johan Miranda, and Kazu Kusano (FYI, they are all comics whose parents suffer from mental illness and are perfect for a show such as this).

RSVP, donate, and tune in to NORMALIZE EVERYTHING this Sat. Dec. 19th at 7PM PT/10PM ET.

Pick of the Day: Bechdel Cast Presents The Santa Clause Livestream 12/13

December 4, 2020
News
benefit show, caitlin durante, jamie loftus, live reading, reclaim and rebuild our community, the santa clause

It’s very likely that a seminal holiday movie, whether you liked or not, was The Santa Clause starring Tim Allen. You could have seen it at a formative time in your childhood or maybe screenings were sold out your local theater for several weeks and your parents just shrugged the shoulders and apologized.

No matter what your memory of it was, you might be perusing the holiday movie catalog and The Santa Clause might be coming to mind, which is a perfect time for Jamie Loftus and Caitlin Durante of The Bechdel Cast to do their own live-read of the movie (effectively giving it the reimagining it needs for 2020). They’ll be doing this live-read as a fundraiser for a great org, RROC (Reclaim & Rebuild Our Community), making it for a pretty perfect thing to watch during these new holiday lockdown measures.

The Bechdel Cast Presents Live Reading of The Santa Clause is set for Sun. Dec. 13th at 6PM PT/9PM ET. Live-stream access is available for $10 donation, but it’ll be available after the event.

Pick of the Day: A Christi-mas Spectacular! with Christi Chiello 12/17

December 1, 2020
News
benefit show, brittany carney, brooklyn, brooklyn comedy, chris gethard, Christi Chiello, jo firestone, matteo lane, nyc comedy

As Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and a time of giving, what better way to celebrate it than with the amazing Christi Chiello who loves Jesus (it’s in her Twitter bio next to loving pizza and “UR MAN”) and supporting of one of NYC’s best venues, Littlefield and COVID-19 relief?

That’s what Christi-mas Spectacular will be on Thurs. Dec. 17th at 5PM PT/8PM ET. The evening of virtual comedy will definitely be a welcome alternative to celebrating the holiday season if you’re not into hearing Christmas standards playing everywhere and just looking at Christmas lights.

Christi’s Christi-mas Spectacular! will feature a holiday gift box collection of NYC’s favorites including Chris Gethard, Jo Firestone, Matteo Lane, Brittany Carney, and other special guests.

Tickets are given by donation and you can and should give then get your tickets here.

#PickoftheDay: Dent for Coroner 10/3

October 2, 2020
News
anna valenzuela, benefit show, dent for coroner, gareth reynolds, ian dent, jackie kashian, keith carey, local elections, rivers langley, roy wood jr

So much of the upcoming election isn’t only just about getting ousting Trump as POTUS and having to deal with Biden as a result. So many state and local elections that often have a greater effect on the lives of individuals than what happens at the federal level are very crucial in this  election too.

That’s why the likes of a top notch comedy showcase including Roy Wood Jr., Gareth Reynolds, Jackie Kashian, Brandie Posey, Anna Valenzuela, Keith Carey, and Rivers Langley are putting on a live-streamed comedy fundraiser for one Ian Dent and his campaign to become the first transgender coroner in the U.S. Dent is specifically running for County Coroner in Indiana and it’s the sort of change that the U.S. needs on all levels right now.

The fine folks over at Hold The Phone are hosting this event this Saturday at 5PM PT/8PM ET accepting donations throughout the show. Tune in at holdthephone.tv .

Nori Reed is a great comedian that blessed LA with her presence in moving down from SF not too long ago. She is also a trans woman who, tragically, is in need of safe housing due to being forced out earlier this month by a bigot she was living with.

So, there is a big benefit live-stream comedy show next month that aims to raise enough money to help her live and thrive in a space that she deserves. Safe Housing 4 Nori Reed will take place on Sat. Sept. 5th at 8PM PT/11PM ET and feature a terrifically stacked line-up of Kate Berlant, Patti Harrison, Naomi Ekperigin, Meg Stalter, Spike Einbinder, Sarah Squirm, Joe Castle Baker, Jes Tom, Jessica Henderson, and more TBA.

July 9, 2020
News
abortion, benefit show, clare o'kane, dsa, francesca fiorentini, jourdain searles, kate willett, pittsburgh, rachel mccartney

Though the Supreme Court did just make a recent decision in favor of abortion, there, as with everything right now, is still plenty of work to do in letting women not have their bodies legislated.

Thus, great comedians from all around the country including Francesca Fiorentini, Clare O’Kane, Jourdain Searles, Kate Willett, and Rachel McCartney are virtually assembling from coast to coast in collaboration with the Pittsburgh DSA Socialist Feminist committee to raise money for the Western PA Fund for Choice (@WPAFund4Choice). This fund actually services abortion access to Western PA, West Virginia, and Ohio, FYI.

This Abortion Fundraise Online Comedy Show is set for Fri. July 10th at 6PM PT/9PM ET and ought to be both worthy of your time and money for a great cause. They’re asking for $10 donation, but you can give what you can. Get more details/RSVP here.

News
benefit show, bowen yang, cynthia nixon, dsa, jaboukie young white, julio torres, nyc, sarah silverman

It’s more than obvious right now that we need a big change in many of our leaders, especially elected officials. The NYC chapter of the DSA is working hard to make that happen. They’re aiming to have four specific candidates to fill state level offices namely, Jabari Brisport, Phara Forrest, Marcela Mitayanes, and Zohran Mamdani.

To accomplish this, there will be a big telethon-ish variety benefit show called You Had Me at New York featuring a line-up that’s stacked on top of being stacked. Slated for this extravaganza are:

Jaboukie Young-White, Bowen Yang, Sarah Silverman, Julio Torres, Cynthia Nixon, Nina Turner, Philip Agnew, Patti Harrison, Jerry Paper, Larry Owens, Kate Berlant, John Early, Madison McFerrin, Aparna Nancherla, Nina Turner, Balún, Dynasty Handbag, Ruby McCollister, Cole Escola, Micheal Cavadias, Sarah Sherman, Chani Nicholas, Una Osato aka ExHOTic, Other, Jennifer Vanilla, Jeremy & Rajat, Tommy Pico, Joey De Jesus, Kiko Soiree, Simone Norman.

You Had Me at New York is set for Sun. May 31st at 3PM PT/6PM ET. Tickets start at $15 and you absolutely should go get tickets right here right now.

There will be a bigger line-up than his usual residency has slated (that will probably get bigger than this flyer), but all of this will be done in service of Australian Wildfire Relief.

The well of comedy gold that flows from the imagination of Tom Scharpling (The Best Show on WFMU) never ends and never ceases to amaze. Just for the hell of it, he made an irreverent script for what he thought could be the third installment in the Grown-Ups franchise, the Adam Sandler and friends broad comedies that is pretty much just premised on reuniting old friends for some hijinks.

This Grown-Ups 3 will be live read later this month (Tues. Jan. 28th 8:30PM) at the Bootleg by what we’re sure will be a stellar cast in order to raise money in support of Australian Wildfire relief.

Tickets are starting at $15. Go get them for this special, one-off that supports a very, very good cause here.
