Whether it be MENA, MENASA, or SWANA or any other acronym, the several Middle Eastern, African, and Asian countries that constitute a version of “brown”, so to speak, are coming more and more in prominence. This is evidenced with LA local favorite Lynn Maleh and her MENA based stand-up show Hilarious Habibis that she runs with Gena B. Jones at the Hollywood Improv. We talk with Lynn about working her way through producing beloved house shows in LA for years to making space and highlighting Middle Eastern and North African comedians and working towards being inclusive of even more shades of “brown”.

Follow Lynn @heylynnmolly on IG and get tickets for the upcoming Hilarious Habibis on Dec. 5th at The Hollywood Improv that will benefit The Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights in Iran.

The protests in Iran might be turning to a revolution very soon. It was just announced today that three more protesters are being sentenced to death by The Islamic Republic due to anti-regime activities. Given that one death was the spark of this round of protests, this likely won’t quell the anger in the streets of Iran.

With that being the case, those protesters/activists/revolutionaries will need any and all support they can get in fighting for basic human rights and freedoms. Hilarious Habibis, the monthly MENA (Middle East/North Africa) comedy showcase at the Hollywood Improv, will be taking over the Main Room at the Improv on Mon. Dec. 5th at 7PM to raise money for this very cause via The Abdorrahman Boroumand Center for Human Rights.

On the line-up thus far will be Iranian American comedians that you really ought to know if you don’t know them already including Aristotle Athari, Dan Ahdoot, Zahra Norrbakhsh, and Sarah Fatemi along with Hilarious Habibis hosts Lynn Maleh and Gena B. Jones.

It’s already a pretty great, well curated show and, with this edition, there’s an extra special reason to go get your tickets right here right now.

Some Versions of ‘Modern Family’ Around the World Have A Few Big Differences From The Original

Currently, Iran, Chile, and Greece have or are working on their own versions of ABC’s hit sitcom and perennial award winning series Modern Family.

In Iran and Chile however, same-sex marriage is not legal and thus, Cam and Mitchell are not adapted into the Iranian and Chilean versions of the show titled as “Haft Sang” and “Familia Moderna” respectively. Even more perturbing is the idea that producers for Haft Sang have not gotten rights to adapt Modern Family.
