One of our favorite house comedy shows Wolf Den is celebrating two years of having one of the most picturesque comedy shows on a patio.

Per usual, they have a great line-up (just take a gander above) and hosts Amy Silverberg and Lynn Maleh will kick off what’s sure to be another killer show.

You can (and perhaps should) reserve a spot in advance here.

Netflix Is Getting Into Comedy Roasts by Ordering “Historical Roasts” to Series and Having Jeff Ross Attached

Well, it looks like Comedy Central isn’t the only place you’ll be able to find comedy roasts anymore.

Historical Roast (and Fictional Roast), for a few years now, have been putting the feet of anything from WWII to Shakespeare to Disney Princesses to the fire for fun on stages across LA in appropriate costumes (including Nerdmelt, The Comedy Store, and Dynasty Typewriter).

Given the success of Roast Battle, we thought it only a matter of time before this show created by Eddie Furth, Ryan Pigg, and Samee Junio got picked up somewhere, which just happened to be Netflix.

Similar to the way that Roastmaster General Jeff Ross brought Roast Battle to the forefront, Ross will have his stamp on the six episodes ordered for Historical Roasts.

We’ll keep our ears to the ground for when tapings happen and let you know ASAP.

If you thought Eighth Grade reminded how awkward and chaotic adolescence and puberty was, Big Mouth, the animated series that personifies hormones and teenage anxieties with monsters, seems like it will be going  a few notches higher in this regard.

See for yourself in this trailer that promises season 2 will be more NSFW than it already it is (in a fun, gross way though, of course).

All episodes of Big Mouth begin streaming on October 5th on Netflix.

“Love, Gilda” Documentary Affectionately Shows How Gilda Radner Had That Magical ‘It’ Quality, On and Off Stage

As mentioned in the headline, Gilda Radner, one of the first breakout stars of Saturday Night Live, undeniably had “it”.

For several decades now, an oft-remarked quality brought up in evaluating talent in Hollywood is the vaguely defined (perhaps intentionally so) notion of having “it”. “It” could be understood as an undeniable magnetism and charm that emanates from a person and their mere presence on stage and screen, but the biz powers that be like keeping such a thing shrouded in a bit of mystery.

The documentary Love, Gilda, directed by Lisa D’Apolito, showcases, via clips of her several TV performances and appearances, home video, and diary entries (lovingly read by modern day SNL alums including Amy Poehler, Cecily Strong, Maya Rudolph, and Bill Hader), just how much Gilda shone wherever she was no matter what she was going through. Even in a long, hard fought battle with cancer, you can see that Gilda’s spirit couldn’t be tamped down as she was one of the very first comedians to publicly joke about having cancer on TV.

For many, Love, Gilda might be a beautiful tear jerker portrait that will also have you laughing because, again, Gilda just had “it”.

Love, Gilda is set to hit select theaters this Friday, September 21st. See where it’s playing and get your tickets here.

The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel Dominates Comedy Categories at This Years Emmys

Taking home the Emmy statues last night for outstanding writing, directing, lead actress, and supporting actress is a pretty damn good sweep for Amy Sherman-Palladino’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn Are Peak Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn in “Private Life” Trailer

Over their extensive filmographies, both Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn have played a plethora of complex characters while still managing to leave an indelible stamp on every role. Whether it be Sideways, Billions, Transparent, or I Love Dick, Giamatti and Hahn have a knack for playing people that are doing their best in spite of their circumstances.

Private Life, an upcoming film that pairs these two together, provides a big canvas for them to show off and it sure looks like they show off exquistely. Also, it’ll be the latest offering from writer/director Tamara Jenkins, who also wrote and directed one of our favorite dark comedy/dramas, The Savages.

Get a taste of what’s to come in this trailer, then look for Private Life to begin streaming on Netflix starting October 5th.

This is just a friendly neighborhood reminder of what you’ll probably end up spending your whole weekend watching.

Who knew that an animated series following a misanthropic, anthropomorphized horse trying to process fame, existence, etc. peppered with clever animal puns would be one of the most poignant shows of our time and go for 5 seasons?

We had a feeling of season 1 of BoJack Horseman that this might be the case. In any case, all episodes of season 5 of BoJack are now streaming on Netflix.

A quarter century ago, some of the fanciest hair on the one of the silliest people, Conan O’Brien, began what would be a legendary career (and is still in the making) of hosting late night talk shows.

To mark this milestone in comedy, television, and entertainment history, Team Coco will soon be having a Late Night Archive in which you can go through the aforementioned 4000+ episodes of Conan including (Late Night, The Tonight Show). We’re sure Gen Z will have a lot of fun discovering Fed Ex Pope, Conan spinning his wedding ring on his desk, and the early days of Conan roaming outside the studio.

For now, you can watch the very first episode on YouTube for your convenience and impatiently have to wait for the thousands of other eps. in Jan. 2019.

This “Freeway to Hell” Trailer Means There’s More Rotoscoping Goodness Coming from Electric Television

Electric Television, the good folks that used rotoscoping to make fun short films that punch up Cocktail and Dragnet into Cocktails & Dreams and Green Boy, will very soon being bring you another piece entitled Freeway to Hell. In a way, it’s like the next evolution of making fun of movies going from MST3K to actually being in the movie to satirize it.

This time, they’ll be hilariously cutting themselves into those specific types of 60s films that attempted to demonize subcultures like bike gangs, but seeming very cheesy while doing so. Get a taste of Freeway to Hell here. The full short will be coming soon!

ABC Commits to Put Pilot for Tessa Coates Comedy Produced By Greg Daniels

UK comedy multi-hyphenate Tessa Coates might well be on her way to living a bit of La La Land in real life. Not only did she come to LA and perform her solo show Primates, hoping to make a splash in Hollywood, but she did to an inimate crowd so at the very theater where Emma Stone’s Mia  performed her solo show in La La Land, the Hayworth Theater (now known as the Dynasty Typewriter at the Hayworth Theater).

Coates was a pure delight and  and irresistibly effervescent when we saw her there, her charm winning everybody right from the get go. Details as to what this project might exactly be haven’t been released yet, but we’re excited to see what Coates might have in store for us Yanks. Fortunately, with The Office’s Greg Daniels attached, that might just happen.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs Trailer Brings the Coen Brothers Back to the Old West (and Their Signature Dry and Dark Sense of Humor)

September 13, 2018
Uncategorized
coen brothers, ethan coen, joel coen

While their remake of True Grit was an entry into traditional Western genre, still done up with Coen Brothers’ panache, Joel and Ethan Coen haven’t done had a Western film to their name that’s completely their own.

Well, that is until now with the “six-part Western anthology film” called The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. There’s a lot of buzz as it works its way along the festival circuit and this trailer just released today really shows more of the subversive, gallows humor (in this case, literally) set in the cinematic landscapes that the Coen Brothers are so good at laying out. Tim Blake Nelson, the titular character, appears to shine bright in all ways from what you can see.

What’ll be interesting in the two-pronged release of The Ballad of Buster Scruggs on Netflix and in limited release on November 16th. All Coen Brothers movies should be seen on the big screen, but not having to wait until the movie possibly expands to a theater near you and just streaming on Netflix is awfully convenient.

Also, it seems like James Franco in a noose, confused, might become it’s own meme separate from the film, doesn’t it?
