Nick Youssef’s Latest Album “1982″ Out Now

May 28, 2016

Nick Youssef has just come out with his follow up to his solid debut album Stop Not Owning This, 1982 (a riff on Taylor Swift’s album title “1989″ perhaps?).

For this hour, Youssef examines making it out of his 20s into his 30s. It’s well trodden territory for comedy, but Nick delivers it effortlessly with such painstaking, colorful detail that it does stand out from the pack. He also balances poking fun at millennials and those even younger for all their shortcomings as well as throwing himself under the bus as a pretentious coffee addict. From start to finish, 1982 flows together so well almost like you just watched a “slice-of-life” indie flick of Youssef’s life these days.

You can 1982 off of iTunes now.

One Dachshund Brings Four Unlikely Stories Together in Trailer for Todd Solondz’s Latest “Wiener-Dog”

It’s been quite some time since singular director Todd Solondz’s last film, but after many years, Wiener-Dog will be hitting theaters soon.

The man who brought us the engrossingly enigmatic, and often bleak, humor of Welcome to The Dollhouse, Happiness, Palindromes, and Storytelling now brings us a story of life being connected via a dachshund.

Greta Gerwig, Danny DeVito, Zosia Mamet, Ellen Burstyn, Kieran Culkin, and Julie Delpy make up for a stellar ensemble cast and, knowing Solondz’s filmography, the trailer only teases slightly what batty darkness is bubbling underneath the surface.

Look for Wiener-Dog in theaters on June 24th.

Season 2, which premieres on Monday, June 6th, will be definitely heading further in that direction.

Watch Trailer for Breakfast Club-Esque Korean Comedy “Seoul Searching”

May 26, 2016
Uncategorized

Being set in the 80s and having a crew of misfits from all different walks of life is a pretty good blueprint for what made John Hughes movies so iconic.

Writer/director Benson Lee took said blueprint and applied it to the story of Korean teenagers from all around the world spending a summer in Korea to learn more about the motherland (not unlike Birthright for Jewish people).

Thus, Seoul Searching was made.

The trailer looks pretty promising and definitely lives up to the John Hughes tribute label.

Look for it in LA theaters starting June 24th.

Stephen Colbert Shows How “Expensive” a Gender Neutral Bathroom Would Really Cost

GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump continues to flip flop and becoming more vague on his position about the unfortunate issue of gender and bathrooms. On Jimmy Kimmel Live last night, he evaded any sort of legitimate answer like any hollow politician would.

As this is the case and since every late night host is contractually obligated to poke fun at Trump, Stephen Colbert cleverly shows how all of America how this is not a problem and is a non-issue in literally one fell swoop on last night’s Late Show.

…or, knowing Reggie, it might as well be a whole new dimension.

As part of AltspaceVR’s push towards inclusive interactive virtual reality, Reggie Watts will be performing via an avatar in a digital space at 8PM PDT.

It might just be a little like a real life version of Creative Control where Reggie appears in an “Augmented Reality” headset.

They’d like it to be the largest attended VR event ever and since you can watch it on your laptop on top of Samsung Gear VR, Rift, or Vive, that might just happen.

Whether You Believe in Love or Not, “The Lobster” Is One Hell of a Dystopian Fairy Tale Rom Com That You Should Go See

Writer/Director Yorgos Lanthimos and Co-writer Efthymis Filippou offer up a fantastic romantic comedy in The Lobster. Set in a world where you will turn into an animal of your choice if you don’t find love, the film will definitely strike a chord with those melancholic lonely hearts out there.

However, The Lobster is so wildly imaginative and also so dark, even grotesque at times, delightfully picking apart finding love on all levels (including being alone) that couples and those still committed to their search for true love won’t feel left out. In fact, those romances set up in those post-apocalyptic dystopian young adult franchises are put to shame here in a very complex examination of what lengths one might go to find someone to be with.

Also, Colin Farrell gives one of the best, most nuanced performances of his career as a forlorn, quiet architect.

It’s currently playing in a handful of theaters around LA and you can search for times and get tickets here.

Jermaine Fowler Gets Another Pilot Order for His “Superior Donuts” from CBS

May 26, 2016
Uncategorized

(via Deadline)

Sounds a lot like what happened with Jerrod Carmichael with eventually getting The Carmichael Show on the air.

Well before Jerrod got his 3rd season renewal earlier this month, he went through several rounds of pilots and pilot presentations of his show over a few years before NBC brass decided to give The Carmichael Show a green light.

In a similar way, the only potentially new diverse multi-cam sitcom at CBS, Superior Donuts, is getting reworked as CBS execs really dig Jermaine Fowler.

Based off the initial heat they’ve been taking from their very white, very anti-millennial, new fall comedy line-up of Kevin Can Wait, The Great Indoors, and Man With a Plan, CBS probably shouldn’t wait around in going forward with Fowler and Superior Donuts.

In this post-Jon Stewart era of late night, many alumni of The Daily Show have branched out to almost every imaginable corner of the TV realm.

“Get Shorty” Adaptation Gets Series Order at Epix

(via Variety)

If there wasn’t an Elmore Leonard novel about Hollywood and the Mob crossing paths, we’re sure someone else, with the way TV is going these days, would make up a series like that eventually.

In the last millennium, there was a movie adaptation of Leonard’s novel Get Shorty starring John Travolta, Rene Russo, Danny DeVito, and Gene Hackman. The crime comedy story is getting revisited in this millennium, but this time doing so on the small screen.

Epix has just handed down a series order for the TV adaptation by veteran writer/producer Davey Holmes.

Currently, this TV version of Get Shorty is being billed as a drama even though the movie was a comedy. We’ll have to wait for the series premiere to find out which side of the dramedy spectrum it’ll fall on.
