Uncategorized
ann lupo, in reality, trailer

Ann Lupo’s trippy debut feature In Reality is only making the rounds at festivals right now, but, based off of what we can see in the trailer, we hope that it gets some kind of release soon.

If love is a drug, this film might show you what it’s like to be on it in the best way possible.

Here’s Your First Look at Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj

Uncategorized

Or, you could call this your first look at government surveillance watching Hasan do his upcoming weekly Netflix show.

In any case, if the (slightly?) fictionalized watching of Hasan Minhaj doing his topical comedy series is a new angle, which might play well in the arena occupied by Trevor Noah, John Oliver, and Samantha Bee.

We’ll be excited to see what Hasan has cooked up and if Netflix will have finally figured out how they want to do a weekly comedy show where they can’t release all the episodes at once.

Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj starts streaming Oct. 28, then releases new episodes every Sunday after that.

Watch Trailer for Desiree Akhavan’s Upcoming Dating Comedy Series “The Bisexual”

Groundbreaking LGBTQ writer/director/actress Desiree Akhavan (The Miseducation of Cameron Post, Appropriate Behavior) will very soon be coming out with her latest work, a dating comedy series told earnestly from the bisexual perspective.

As to make that premise very clear, the series is titled The Bisexual and already shows promise in this trailer. It has the feel of You’re The Worst or Catastrophe, but from a new point of view that very likely will be refreshing.

Get a taste of it with this trailer. We’re going to guess that it’ll be premiering in the UK first, then a streaming service for us here Stateside as it was with Catastrophe. Specifically, it’ll be available in the UK via Channel 4 and in America on Hulu.

Outside the realms of cinema and comedy, Buster Keaton often doesn’t get as much credit as his contemporaries like Charlie Chaplin for the foundations that he set up for directing, performing, and, overall, being a star.

Peter Bogdanovich has set out to make up for this with a feature length documentary following Keaton’s life and the auteurs and performers (that includes anybody from Quentin Tarantino to Johnny Knoxville) that he had an indelible mark on in this millennium.

Get a taste of it with this trailer and look for The Great Buster in select theaters starting October 5th.

Over their extensive filmographies, both Paul Giamatti and Kathryn Hahn have played a plethora of complex characters while still managing to leave an indelible stamp on every role. Whether it be Sideways, Billions, Transparent, or I Love Dick, Giamatti and Hahn have a knack for playing people that are doing their best in spite of their circumstances.

Private Life, an upcoming film that pairs these two together, provides a big canvas for them to show off and it sure looks like they show off exquistely. Also, it’ll be the latest offering from writer/director Tamara Jenkins, who also wrote and directed one of our favorite dark comedy/dramas, The Savages.

Get a taste of what’s to come in this trailer, then look for Private Life to begin streaming on Netflix starting October 5th.

Four years ago, BoJack Horseman debuted on Netflix and broke new ground for being a complex comedy that featured a bold tone shift towards the end of that first season.

Ever since, BoJack has received loads of acclaim by striking a great balance between satirizing the entertainment biz and pondering the ever present existential crises of life with super clever animal jokes all while being an animated series.

This upcoming fifth season, as this trailer shows, seems game to up the ante on what has already been a pretty damn great and unforgettable ride.

Look for all episodes of season 5 of BoJack Horseman to drop on Friday, September 14th.

Daniel Sloss’ Two Upcoming Netflix Specials Get a Trailer

Daniel Sloss has two whole stand-up specials coming to Netflix and also likes to identify his sense of humor as very dark. Maybe that is part of the reason that those specials be dropping on Netflix on 9/11 this year? Then again, maybe Netflix wanted to release it on a Tuesday and that just so happened to line-up perfectly with their release schedule?

In any case, Daniel is one of Scotland’s funniest imports in recent memory (part of the reason why he has done stand-up on Conan more than most comedians this decade). Get a taste of what you’re in for with this clip/trailer here.

It’s a very, very solid bunch. Get a taste of it here, then get ready to binge watch it on Aug. 31st.

Things Get a “Little” Strange When Craig Robinson Wears a Tam O’Shanter Hat in ‘Beverly Luff Linn’ Trailer

Often times, the best trailers get you intrigued with a movie without really telling you what’s going on. You’re confused, yet, maybe you want to see more.

Such is the case with the trailer for An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn, directed by Jim Hosking and co-written by Hosking and David Wike. There seems to be a caper afoot, but the hype over a stage show that stars a man named Beverly Luff Linn (played by Craig Robinson) in Scottish garb seems to take precedence over any confusion (even though it’s not quite clear what the show is).

See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for An Evening with Beverly Luff Linn in theaters and On Demand & Digital starting October 19th.

Danny McBride Takes Boneheaded Vengeance on the Housing Market Crash in “Arizona” (Trailer)

Almost without question, Danny McBride has made America fall in love with his spot on portrayals of misguided rage. Watching such a thing with the backdrop of the current moment is even more perfect pairing than when Foot Fist Way was whispered about between Adam McKay and Will Ferrell.

Arizona, a feature film debut for director Jonathan Watson and writer Luke Del Tredici (producer on 30 Rock, Brooklyn Nine Nine, Bored to Death), follows McBride as a victim of the Subprime Mortgage Crisis/House Market Crash from almost a decade ago who opts to get revenge.

If The Big Short had a cinematic universe, this would likely be a story within it.

The trailer promises some dark fun and you can see all of it for yourself here.

Arizona hits theaters later this month on Aug. 24th.

Hailing from Sundance as an official selection, Daryl Wein and Vivian Bang’s White Rabbit seems like it could be a very fun, satirical comedy that deals with race, art, and economic hardship.

It follows an Asian performance artist that spends most of her time doing TaskRabbit gigs and has a much sunnier disposition than satirical art world comedy, Ruben Östlund’s The Square.

See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for it in theaters September 21st.

After docs on Garry Shandling and Robin Williams, the latest documentary that will dive deep into the life of a comedian that brought joy to so many will be Love, Gilda (directed Lisa D’Apolito) following the one and only Gilda Radner.

There will be, of course, plenty of talking head interviews (that include Lorne Michaels, Martin Short, and more) as well as a collection of various media from Gilda’s personal life showcasing her rise to one of SNL’s first legitimate stars. An intriguing part of the doc will be Radner’s words from her diaries being read from the likes of Bill Hader, Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, and Cecily Strong.

See for yourself in the trailer here, then look for Love, Gilda in theaters starting Friday, September 21st.

Drew Michael Has a Trippy Trailer for His HBO Stand-Up Special

For quite some time, Drew Michael has been on the darker side of comedy and we have quite enjoyed it (especially his album Funny to Death).

So, this minimalist, yet trippy trailer for his upcoming HBO special doesn’t come as a total surprise. However, it does leave us curious as to what lies in store for the hour stand-up special since stand-up-turned-comedy-impresario Jerrod Carmichael is directing, there is no audience, and there seems to be a secondary character played by a girl going through a roller coaster of emotions.

See for yourself here. Drew Michael premieres on HBO on Saturday, August 25th.

Amongst the wave of things that were unveiled during Comic-Con this weekend, Matt Groening’s newest series, Disenchanted, debuted its first trailer.

It’s the ultra clever comedy you’ve come to expect from the creator of The Simpsons, this time set in a fantasy world in the past. Though, as was the case of the distant future of Futurama, plenty of jokes will be plenty to relevant to the present day real world. We didn’t get to see much of it in the trailer, but we hope that there will be lots of signage humor in Disenchanted.

See all of this for yourself here and look for all episodes to start streaming on Netflix on Friday, August 17th.

“The Favourite” Trailer Has 18th Century English Nobles Get Weird and Push Each Other a Bunch

Yorgos Lanthimos, the director and co-writer of the dementedly hysterical The Lobster, is serving up another round of absurdity with The Favourite. This time, though, it’s set amongst 18th century English aristocracy.

If anything, the exquisite period costumes only ratchet up the wryness, especially when it comes to the amount of falling this movie seems to have. Olivia Colman, Rachel Weisz, and Emma Stone appear to have a great dynamic triangle of some sort going on, which we’re digging.

See all of this for yourself in the trailer. Look for The Favourite in theaters on November 23rd.

From Computer Chess alone, we’ve become Andrew Bujalski fans and, subsequently, were really excited to see what he came up with next.

The trailer for his latest, Support the Girls, delivers in getting us hyped for another Bujalski off-beat comedy. Though, rather than a weird look into the early days of chess playing computers, we’re going into the inner workings of a Hooters-esque bar with what seems to be a shining lead in Regina Hall.

Perhaps, this will be a sweeter version of Party Down set in a sports bar and will be a timely story in the era of #MeToo and #TimesUp.

See for yourself in this trailer.

If your interest is hooked like ours is, then look for Support The Girls in theaters starting August 24th.

Here’s your first look at the first batch of Netflix’s stand-up experiment of having 15 minute specials (though they could have tried to come up with a much-less-generic-sounding name).

As you can see, Michelle Buteau, Ian Karmel, Taylor Tomlinson, Sam Jay, Phil Wang, Sabrina Jalees, Jak Knight, and Tim Dillon are all up to bat who we’re all really on board for.

Also, you might notice in the trailer that rear close up angle on the comics, which is intriguing and has us curious how that’ll play out on the specials.

Look for this edition of The Comedy Lineup on July 3rd on Netflix.

Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee Season 10 Gets Full Trailer Done Up Like Vintage Commercial

One underlying penchant of Comedians In Cars Getting Coffee is Jerry Seinfeld’s love for classic ads. It makes sense given his affinity for cars of the past.

So, Jerry sells season 10 (coming to Netflix on July 6th) in this trailer as if it were an add for some home appliance in the 50s (even going so far as to do most of it up in black and white).

At this point, the freewheeling hangout/interview series knows it formula and how to execute quite well. Really, you can almost see that episodes with Kate McKinnon, Mulaney, Chappelle, Galifianakis will almost certainly deliver.

It has been four years since Robin Williams, a legend not just in comedy, but entertainment as a whole, has sadly left us all when committing suicide in his home.

Robin’s career in comedy, TV, and movies was so vast that there are undoubtedly multiple generations that primarily know him from his stand-up or Good Will Hunting or Mork and Mindy, etc. In any case, he left an unmistakable mark on pop culture and was a force to be reckoned with on stage and screen.

Marina Zenovich’s upcoming documentary Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind will attempt to present the man behind the legend with interviews from the likes of Steve Martin, Billy Crystal, Williams’ family, and more. From what we can tell, you might get a little choked up.

See a bit of it for yourself in the trailer, then look for Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind to premiere on HBO on Friday, July 13th.

The land that produced Björk and “necropants” ought to have a minimalist, dark sense of humor.

Certainly, that’s what we’re getting from the trailer of Hafsteinn Gunnar Sigurðsson’s Under The Tree, which follows the bitter, bitter dispute between neighbors and one single tree.

The premiere of The Break with Michelle Wolf is only a few days away, which is, we should again note, is less than a month after her performance at the White House Correspondents Dinner. Needless to say, we’re highly anticipating what Wolf and company have up their sleeves.

So, with this first sketch that just got posted, they poke fun at shoe-horning female lead characters into clearly-written-for-male leads without changing much (this parody trailer bares a satirical resemblance to the actual movie Equity). It sets a tone that has always been Wolf’s brand of comedy, equal parts biting and silly. It looks like Sundays will now have a double dose of satirical comedy from John Oliver and Wolf.

Also, in watching this, we had a good laugh thinking of Wolf as the “strong female lead” of her own show on Netflix.

The Break with Michelle Wolf begins streaming on Sundays starting May 27th on Netflix.

Two comedy legends like Steve Martin and Martin Short sharing the stage like they never have before might be hard to imagine since both are beloved comedy superstars and have been so for decades.

Having both stars collide, as seen in this trailer, seems like a fun back-and-forth challenging each other as if they were hanging out at an intimate club, except they are in a massive theater.

Also, Jiminy Glick will be making a cameo as a great bonus for Martin and Short’s An Evening You Will Forget for The Rest of Your Life.

Look for the special to drop on Netflix in a week on Friday, May 25th.

Now entering to its 4th season on Netflix, we can’t help but notice how much of a well-oiled machine Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is at this point, which, unfortunately, doesn’t get to be the case for similar high concepts sitcoms on linear TV.

Being a single camera scripted show and staying pretty topical (#MeToo, AI) and making that all work is impressive. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has kept up that standard for three seasons and, according to this trailer, will likely live up to it again in this upcoming season.

Season 4 of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt begins streaming on Netflix on May 30th.
