Andrew Bujalski Looks to Keep It Delightfully, Quietly Strange with “There There” Trailer

October 18, 2022
News
andrew bujalski, there there, trailer

Computer Chess and Support The Girls have arguably put Andrew Bujalski on the map as a preeminent indie filmmaker even though his films are devoid of any sort big premise or pops, bangs, whizzes. The uncanny touch of nuance he has with his stellar casts (it was truly a marvel to see Regina King in something as offbeat as Support The Girls) and how much humor he can draw out of the quieter moments in life is astounding.

His latest film, There There aims to further cement his comedy auteur stamp with conversations between several people through FaceTime/Zoom, presumably because of COVID-19 lockdown. It won’t just be a bunch of floating heads or solo monologues to the camera like HBO’s Coastal Elites, but rather capturing lonesome folks (that just happened to include Jason Schwartzman, Molly Gordon,  and capturing the absurdity/beauty of trying to stay connected to humanity via your laptop’s front facing camera.

Take a gander for yourself with There There‘s official trailer here, then look for its release on Nov. 18th.

Go Watch Andrew Bujalski’s Latest Film “Support the Girls”

At first glance, it might seem like Andrew Bujalski is making a hard pivot from his previous abstract comedy Computer Chess by doing a comedy following the lives of the women who work at a Hooters-like sports bar. Support The Girls certainly is indeed not a mysterious comedy following teams and their computers playing other computers in chess, but Bujalski’s mischievous, off-beat sensibilities are still present here.

In fact, the way that Regina Hall’s Lisa has her life as the general manager of Double Whammies unravel over the course of a day seems almost akin to a comedic reimagining of 2013′s Locke than just a standard comedy about finding family wherever you can and staying together when you find it.

Also, it definitely should be noted that Regina Hall, Haley Lu Richardson, and Shayna McHayle’s performances offer so much heart that you can’t help but think of the virtues of the movie’s title throughout. Such a film is especially timely in this era of #MeToo, but it has so much humanity that we would like to think that it would have been timely well before now.

In any case, you should go see Support The Girls as it’s now playing in theaters. Get showtimes here.

Trailer for “Support The Girls” Offers Up Timely Indie Workplace Comedy for 2018

From Computer Chess alone, we’ve become Andrew Bujalski fans and, subsequently, were really excited to see what he came up with next.

The trailer for his latest, Support the Girls, delivers in getting us hyped for another Bujalski off-beat comedy. Though, rather than a weird look into the early days of chess playing computers, we’re going into the inner workings of a Hooters-esque bar with what seems to be a shining lead in Regina Hall.

Perhaps, this will be a sweeter version of Party Down set in a sports bar and will be a timely story in the era of #MeToo and #TimesUp.

See for yourself in this trailer.

If your interest is hooked like ours is, then look for Support The Girls in theaters starting August 24th.

Check Out The Trailer for Andrew Bujalski’s Rom Com of Sorts “Results”

The man behind the wonderfully out there Computer Chess, Andrew Bujalski, brings his take on a romantic comedy with Results.

A very strange love triangle forms between personal trainers played by Cobie Smulders and Guy Pearce and a new rich client played by Kevin Corrigan in Results which seems to go a little off on a tangent from typical rom com fare.

Watching this trailer, we’re into it.

Look for results in limited release starting May 29th.

This year’s Sundance Film Festival has distributors combing through the big bills in their wallets for comedy/dramedy.

Even though, Me And Earl And The Dying Girl ended up not setting a buy record at the festival, it still carried a decently sized price tag in the mid 7 figure range.

Other films that might potentially rule the specialty box office and beyond this year include:

–Kevin Pollak’s documentary Misery Loves Comedy acquired by Tribeca Film.

–The D Train with Jack Black, James Marsden, Kathryn Hahn, Jeffrey Tambor, Mike White, and Kyle Bornheimer bought up by IFC Films for $3 million.

-The world rights for Results from Andrew Bujalski, the man who brought Computer Chess into the world, acquired by Magnolia Pictures.

–The North American rights to Don Verdean with Sam Rockwell, Danny McBride, Leslie Bibb, Jemaine Clement, Will Forte, and Amy Ryan from Jared Hess acquired by Lionsgate.

–The U.S. rights to The Bronze starring and co-written by Melissa Rauch acquired by Relativity for $3 million.

–The Overnight produced by The Duplass Brothers and Adam & Naomi Scott’s Gettin’ Rad bought up by The Orchard for $4 million.

–The world rights to Tangerine, also produced by The Duplass Brothers, acquired by Magnolia Pictures.

–Dope with Zoe Kravitz, the voice of Forest Whitaker, Blake Anderson, and more bought up by Open Road Films and Sony Pictures for $7 million.

–Mistress America from Noah Baumbach and Greta Gerwig bought up by Fox Searchlight for $6.5 million before it even played at the festival.

It’s inevitable that we’ll all be obsessing over their trailers in the coming months.

Watch Trailer for “Computer Chess”, A Comedy About Computer Chess

It was only a matter of time before there was an indie black and white period comedy centered around a niche style chess tournament wherein competitors and computers play the game. Yet, honestly, it made for a great, off-beat trailer of Andrew Bujalski’s ‘Computer Chess’.

Watch it here.
