JFL Montreal Will Officially Be Back with Galas and Big Names and All in Person This Summer

March 22, 2022
News

Since 2019, the annual, internationally renowned JFL Montreal Comedy Festival has had to call audibles and make due with having to go pretty much virtual for their festivities. One of the world’s longest running comedy festivals suffered the same fate as so many festivals, big and small, over the last two years and had to forego their routine of gathering thousands of people together to enjoy a show.

Fortunately, at this side of the pandemic, Just For Laughs will be resuming their marquee festival (on top of expanding their reach to Austin and the UK in the coming months) with the same big, flashy line-ups they’ve always had. For 2022, just as their first line-up announcement, they’ve got:

JOHN MULANEY – HASAN MINHAJ – CHELSEA HANDLER – JO KOY – ILIZA SHLESINGER – RUSSELL PETERS – HANNAH GADSBY – RONNY CHIENG – PATTON OSWALT – MARC MARON – TOMMY TIERNAN – VIR DAS – CELESTE BARBER – NEAL BRENNAN

JFL will of course have way more comedians than just that (not to mention that the whole round of New Faces of Comedy are being determined as you read this).

If you’re in and around Montreal or are aiming to get back to one of comedy’s biggest shindigs on a regular basis, you can purchase pre-sale tickets starting 3/23 at 7AM PT/10AM ET (or when everyone else gets it on 3/25 at 7AM ET/10AM ET) at www.hahaha.com.

Let’s hope that sub variant or any other variant is considerably less pesky than any of the other variants that came before it.

One of our favorite comedy hyphenates Carly Hoogendyk (comedy producer-talent manager-photographer) joins us for this week’s TCB Field Report to give us the NYC perspective on comedy reopening (we literally ask her to give us the lay of the land when looking out her apartment window) and what’s going on behind the scenes out in the streets of NYC comedy (across several boroughs). FYI, there’s some nice comedy show lineage history here between the ungodly amount of comedy that has been seen between both Carly and TCB’s Jake Kroeger. Also, we go in on with “hot” takes on this year’s JFL New Faces of Comedy and Neal Brennan using the world’s new preeminent magician, Derek Delgaudio, to direct his new special.

Pick of the Day: Neal Brennan-Unacceptable (in NYC) Starting 8/25

Neal Brennan put out his best work to date with his last special Three Mics in 2017. 2017 seems like eons ago, most likely because eons worth of stuff has happened since then. Still, it was one of the best specials that year and a very welcome break for the one mic style stand-up special.

So, Brennan seems like he’s venturing out on another reimagining of the form, though we’re not quite sure what it will be, as he has tapped magician Derek Delgaudio, from the hit magic/solo show special In and Of Itself, to direct this latest hour, which will be titled, Unacceptable. In and of Itself was such a departure from the typical magic show that one has to ponder what both Derek and Neal have up their sleeves.

Brennan is just about to embark on a limited run of Unacceptable at the Cherry Lane Theatre in NYC starting Aug. 25th and going through the beginning of October. Tickets start at $40 and you ought to get your tickets real quick before they all sell out.

This very riveting documentary short Laughing Matters: The Funny Business of Being Sad from SoulPancake, Funny or Die, director Mike Bernstein, and producer/editor Georgia Koch shows how depression has woven its way through the lives of many of your favorite comedic writers, actors, and stand-ups and how they’ve managed to cope.

Included in the doc are harrowing stories of such celebrated funny people Chris Gethard, Sarah Silverman, Rachel Bloom, Baron Vaughn, Neal Brennan, Aparna Nancherla, Rainn Wilson, Sara Benincasa, Riki Lindhome, Wayne Brady, and Anna Akana.

It is indeed #WorldMentalHealthDay and it’s especially worth watching today, but how Laughing Matters effectively navigates the thread of everyone journey with depression, anxiety, and more in this doc is pretty amazing and worth a watch at any time. It’s yet another reminder of how prolific issues with mental health are and why it’s important to take care of it and to know that you’re not alone in how you feel (even though it might feel that way)

You can (and should) watch it here.

Fox Might Be Finally Stepping Back Into the Late Night Ring with a New Show from Neal Brennan

Fox Might Be Finally Stepping Back Into the Late Night Ring with a New Show from Neal Brennan

Thanks to the Internet, late night is now more of a genre than it is a time slot. As such, the genre that gets dibs on making fun of what’s going on in the world first has become very popular, especially thanks to 12 hours news cycle and a psychopath in the White House.

For many years now, Fox has had no entry in the late night world like Kimmel or The Daily Show. They might joining with the times by developing a potential weekly late night show with Neal Brennan, stand-up, writer, and famed co-creator of Chappelle’s Show.

Preliminary details point towards a sort of Last Week Tonight/Full Frontal sort of format, but, we hope, within that format, Brennan might take a cue from his own Three Mics special to break down the week’s events in one-liners, bits, and truths.

Michelle Wolf Will Tape Her First Hour Special for HBO with Neal Brennan Directing

Michelle Wolf, who you’ve probably seen rise from being a great stand-up to Late Night with Seth Meyers to The Daily Show with Trevor Noah, is now making her way to an hour long HBO stand-up special.

Between HBO, Netflix, Comedy Central, Showtime, and Seeso, you can now definitely see each network building up their reserves of comedy specials that they exclusively own and HBO made a pretty solid choice with Wolf.

It’ll tape this summer on Saturday, August 12th at NYC’s Skirball Center and the one and only Neal Brennan will be directing.

Here’s a recent set of Wolf performing in the UK at Live at the Apollo as a bit of a preview of what’s to come.

For 2017-2018, Comedy Central Announces a Reggie Watts Competition, New Negroes with Baron Vaughn and Open Mike Eagle, and Pilots from Arturo Castro, Neal Brennan, Noël Wells, and Awkwafina

It was already enticing enough to hear what Comedy Central has lined-up with late night thus far between Moshe Kasher, The President Show with Atamanuik’s Trump, Jim Jefferies, and Jordan Klepper’s new show.

Now, they’ve got a whole new chunk of programming and pilots that give a lot to look forward to.

Taskmaster, from Alex Horne, has Reggie Watts hosting a competition as the “taskmaster” between comedians performing “stupefying tasks”. New Negroes will be the TV adaptation of the live showcase hosted by Baron Vaughn and Open Mike Eagle featuring new black talent.

Comedy Central has also upped their digital series Alternatino with Arturo Castro and Delco Proper from John McKeever and Tommy Pope to full fledged TV pilots.

The other pilots include projects such as Neal Brennan interviewing celebrity guests in their home town, former Nightly Show contributor Franchesca Ramsey perhaps repackaging The Nightly Show, and a stand-up show from Jak Knight.

Scripted half-hour pilots include a South Side Chicago based comedy from Bashir Salahuddin, Diallo Riddle and Sultan Salahuddin, a Queens based comedy following rapper/actress/comedian Awkwafina, an Austin based sitcom from Noël Wells, and an existential sibling comedy from Chris Kelly & Sarah Schneider.

From this, we can only hope that Comedy Central reaffirms its place in comedy going forward as Netflix, HBO, and FX are currently riding the high tides of critical praise and awards.

Rather than just doing an hour at a single mic, Neal Brennan’s latest comedy special, 3 Mics, opts for literal three microphones on stage at the same time. Brennan will do either one-liners, stories, or bits depending on which mic he is at.

Get a taste of how Brennan will go about that that with this trailer.

Then, look for it to start streaming on Netflix on Tuesday, January 17th.

Fahim Anwar has climbed his way up the stand-up comedy ladder over the last few years, getting to the point of getting to do stand-up on late night regularly.

At this point, Fahim also wants to bring his alter ego, the dance crazed Lance Cantstopolis to where he is. Already, he has gone on stage, fully in character, denim, dancing, and all, and has done pretty well for himself. Just look at the documentary, Outta Nowhere, Fahim made for Lance that has Jeff Ross, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Bobby Lee, Chris D’Elia, and Neal Brennan all talking him up.

Watch and judge for yourself how close Lance and Fahim really are.

(via Deadline)

Having been given a development deal by Fox to create alternative content, the guys from Lonely Island have, so far, put together three projects in development. One is sci-fi comedy with Danny Pudi, another is a mockumentary hosted Neal Brennan, and then there will be a hidden camera show from Andre Hyland (a thing that we think is long overdue).

The company that they’ve formed, almost to no surprise, is called Party Over Here. In case you’re wondering, we’re looking forward to all of this.
