Pick of the Day: The Dollop 10 Year Anniversary (in LA) 4/27

March 20, 2024
News
dave anthony, gareth reynolds, james adomian, karen kilgariff, live podcast, los angeles comedy, the dollop

Though perhaps he did not know that having Gareth Reynolds riff, often startled, at the true absurdity of a deep cut history lesson (and how often alarmingly relevant it is today), but Dave Anthony had some kind of hunch that his excavating a particular flavor of American history (and the history of wherever this podcast his toured) with comedic act outs and banter would be something to chase wherever it led.

10 years later, The Dollop, reigns as one of the best pieces of edutainment around, not just in the podcast realm. Hundreds upon hundreds of episode of Dave and Gary and, from time to time, some amazing guests (Rory Scovel, Wil Anderson automatically come to mind) give the best slice of history that makes us all really rue the history education we received at any level of schooling.

With that in mind, Dave and “Gary” are celebrating the momentous 10 year anniversary of The Dollop in LA at The Palace Theatre in DTLA on Sat. Apr. 27th at 7PM with very, very special guests James Adomian and Karen Kilgariff. We bet even if this is the first time of hearing about the Dollop, you’d have grand ole time. Tickets start at $60 and you best go get them here.

My Favorite Murder to Release Episodes a Week Early Exclusively on Amazon

January 24, 2022
News

(via THR)

Spotify isn’t the only media giant interested in hoarding podcast content to themselves. Amazon (specifically Amazon Music and Wondery) is now getting into the podcast game with cutting a deal with Exactly Right Media, the network launches solely on the back of My Favorite Murder, to have episodes release a week early before their available on all the usual podcast platforms.

The overlords at Amazon represent a much bigger media conglomerate than Spotify or iHeart or any other network that takes on exclusive audio content (not to mention that Amazon owns Audible) making this is a significant move for My Favorite Murder, but the world of podcasting in general. Amazon isn’t buying Exactly Right Media (though we’re sure they could afford it), but partnering with Karen and Georgia and their true crime comedy podcast juggernaut to be the first place where die hard Murderinos will first listen to the podcast and take advantage of a lucrative window to sell ads.

Keep in mind that My Favorite Murder started off very humbly based off of a conversation that Karen and Georgia had at a party about true crime without any idea that it would grow into the massive community and network that it is now. Turns out that almost every major entertainment outlet had overlooked a comedic take on true crime from the perspective of women that are pretty much your close friends.

We’ll be curious to see where the MFM empire goes in 2022 as it’s already off to a pretty hot/SSDGM start.

“Super Serious” Offers an Oral History of LA Indie Stand-Up Scene in a Gorgeous Coffee Table Book

It’s unclear as to exactly what was going on in 2010 in LA comedy, but it was the starting point of almost everything that makes it special now (well, right before COVID-19 struck anyway). The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail started around then, WTF with Marc Maron was picking up steam and kickstarted LA’s comedy podcast explosion, and even we had our humble beginnings around then. Also, so many indie comedy shows popped in and around LA giving the LA comedy scene the sort of connective tissue that it was missing years prior.

One such show is The Super Serious Show and, as they’ve kept their high flying variety show going for a decade between a handful of unique, wondrous venues around LA, they’ve seen the ebbs and flows, the new, the old, the highs, the shifts, the rumblings, the lows, and everything in between that has been going in the venerable indie LA comedy scene, especially when it comes to stand-up. Thus, Super Serious Show co-creator and portrait photographer Mandee Johnson assembled a lovely and exhaustive oral history of the comedy scene here in LA, accented by her signature polaroid portraiture of the hundreds and hundreds of performers that have stepped on The Super Serious Show stage. Contributors to this special oral history entitled Super Serious: An Oral History of Los Angeles Independent Stand-Up Comedy include Hasan Minhaj, Rory Scovel, Anthony Jeselnik, Karen Kilgariff, Baron Vaughn, Dave Anthony, Andy Kindler, Natalie Palamides, Kristen Schaal, Ron Funches, Reggie Watts, Rachel Bloom, Dana Gould, Eddie Pepitone, Cameron Esposito and dozens more.

If you’re as obsessive about comedy as we are, it’s definitely a must have for your coffee table (or whatever table you have). Super Serious: An Oral History of Los Angeles Independent Stand-Up Comedy is available for pre-order now and will be released on Aug. 18th from Andrews McMeel Publishing. Given how there are plenty of shipping delays for non-essential items these days in the U.S., best to put your order in now. Get more details and get your copy here.

Fun news alert: We have a BOOK!

One of the many signs that you’ve made it in the biz is that people start to make unauthorized musicals about you or the thing you do.

Such is the case now with international true crime comedy podcast phenom My Favorite Murder with Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark. Some of UCB’s best musically inclined performers are really gathering to do a staged reading of an actual unauthorized My Favorite Murder musical (though Karen and Georgia have seemed to retroactively authorize it?). In this production (the full scale thing is coming next year), Karen and Georgia will actually solve a murder!

The folks that are daring to do this unauthorized My Favorite Murder Musical are:

Writers: Dahlya Glick and Michael O’Konis.
Director: Andrew Young
(featuring additional songs by) Allie Jennings, Joseph Porter, and Gregory Lawrence Smith Esq..
&
CAST:
Dahlya Glick
Maddi Fraser
Nicole Lauria
Joseph Porter
Anna Garcia
Lindsey Moore Ford

My Favorite Murder: The Unauthorized Musical will take place on Tues., Oct. 29th at 10PM at UCB Sunset Inner Sanctum and admission is FREE! Get more details here.

If you’ve ever wanted the origin stories of Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark, hosts of one of the world’s favorite podcasts, My Favorite Murder, then take note that their dual memoir Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered is officially out now.

It’s a carefully curated collection of stories from both that offer insight how they became a cultural institution from simply hosting a weekly comedy true podcast. Of course, it’s written with their signature sassy, clever, and unapologetic voices and offers up a fun read (perhaps the book of the summer?).

Oh, the audiobook not only has Karen and Georgia, but the voice of Paul Giamatti as well.

Well, go get Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered already.

Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered has undoubtedly become one of the maxims to live by in these times thanks to the efforts of Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark and their great, hit comedy-true crime podcast My Favorite Murder.

Naturally, after touring all over the globe and starting their own podcast network, Karen and Georgia have moved on to writing a memoir titled with their aforementioned podcast sign-off, Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered, set for hardcover release on May 28th (pre-order here). They’ll essentially be sharing a book’s worth of “hometown murders” (i.e. life stories that have led a life of SSGDM) and we have no doubt that it’ll be some of their best tales.

Oh yeah, the audiobook will not only be read by them, but, as briefly mentioned in their latest episode, none other than Paul Giamatti joined Karen and Georgia in recording it.

So, with all of that said, go pre-order Stay Sexy & Don’t Get Murdered here if you haven’t done so already.

My Favorite Murder’s Podcast Network Exactly Right Launches Today

It was less than three years ago that Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark enjoyed each other’s company in recounting infamous murders and releasing it as a podcast known as My Favorite Murder.

Now, having toured the globe and created a gigantic self-sustaining community of murderinos, Karen and Georgia have launched their very own podcast network with a handful of podcasts. Comedy podcasts Do You Need a Ride? where Karen and Chris Fairbanks interview comedians while going to or coming from the airport and The Purrrcast where many comedians get to dish about their cats will be under the Exactly Right banner.

We’re sure this is only the tip of the iceberg for Exactly Right, so you might want to start following them.

Just because Halloween is over doesn’t mean you should have to wait another 11 months before you can look forward to really delving into your fascination of the macabre, especially if it’s from the feminist perspective with a comedic bent.

One of the biggest podcasts around now, My Favorite Murder will be hopping all around the U.S. right as 2019 kicks off as you can see from tour schedule above. Please don’t miss Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark at a city near you from Jan.-May.

My Favorite Murder to Launch ‘Exactly Right’, Their Very Own Podcast Network, on Stitcher

If you’re a long time listener or even just started to listen to My Favorite Murder, you might have some idea how big they’ve gotten merely by the fact that they’re now doing ad reads for Diet Coke.

Essentially, Karen Kilgariff and Georgia Hardstark have amassed such a following with their true crime comedy podcast (in fact, they have more listeners than many TV shows have viewers) that they’ve been given the podcast equivalent of a lucrative overall deal at a studio or network in order to launch their own production banner, appropriately named after a frequent phrase said by Karen herself.

We personally can’t wait to see what Karen and Georgia decide to incubate and develop under Exactly Right. Perhaps, a show called “Corner Corner Corner”?

Fun fact, another podcast that somewhat recently launched their own podcast network off the back of their own success just so happened to be another true crime comedy podcast, Last Podcast on the Left (they launched the Last Podcast Network).

Honestly, we think it’s a travesty that Lizzy Cooperman isn’t more of a known name in comedy. She’s one of the first people we ever saw live that opened our minds to the possibility of what comedy, specifically stand-up could be all those years ago when we started the Bureau.

So, we really urge you to go to one (or both) of the FREE tapings of her album (that will also have the brilliant Karen Kilgariff hosting) at the end of the month.

RSVP here.
