Please Enjoy Jon Dore as Comedy’s HR Rep on “Humour Resources”

December 2, 2021

There has has to be a lot of ingenuity in making any sort of content throughout the pandemic (that isn’t over yet). Necessity being the mother of invention has led to tons of Zoom comedy, but also given us some genuinely funny shows such as Baited with Ziwe on Instagram Live.

Another such show that attempted to deal with the creative conundrum of COVID-19 and very much succeeded is the new CBC comedy series, Humour Resources starring Jon Dore and created by Adam Brodie, Dave Derewlany, and Dore. With the obstacle of so many things having to rely on the front facing cameras for any sort of human interaction, Dore stars as an alternate universe version of himself that has retired from stand-up comedy and chooses to become an HR representative for all of “Comedy” (if all of comedy was housed under one umbrella corporation).

The show is centered around Dore having HR meetings of all shapes and sizes with beloved Canadian and American comedians including Sarah Silverman, Courtney Gilmour, Dave Merheje, Nikki Glaser, Casey Corbin, The Lucas Brothers, Tom Green, Ronny Chieng, DeAnne Smith, Scott Thompson, Sophie Buddle, Eric Andre, Debra DiGiovanni, Arthur Simeon, Rory Scovel, Kyle Brownrigg, Aisha Brown, and Reggie Watts. Even though it’s technically an HR meeting, this feels like Dore’s über clever version of how he would do a late night panel interview if he were given the slot for a talk show.

Thus, there’s a delightful mix of The Office and Conan throughout, especially since Dore has to deal with a quietly chaotic suburban home life while trying to maintain the appearance of a professional member of a Human Resources department. For awhile, if you were in the U.S., you couldn’t really watch it freely, put Just For Laughs is graciously streaming episodes for free on their YouTube channel, releasing them one by one.

At the accommodation of your very busy schedule, you can (and should) enjoy Humour Resources here.

Jon Dore & Rory Scovel Discuss Their Legendary Simultaneous Late Night Sets on Conan

News

In the pantheon of late night stand-up sets, one set that will always stand out on the merits of its daring, execution, and sheer absurdity is the 2011 performance by both Jon Dore and Rory Scovel who do separate stand-up sets at the very same time on Conan, side by side. The sheer dedication to the bit and their flawlessness in their performance is no only a testament to the comedy of both Dore and Scovel, but daring to be as aspirational in silliness as possible.

Dore and Scovel revisit this historic set with Conan booker JP Buck on Conan’s The Set Up and break down and reveal what went into these four hysterical minutes. Please, please, please enjoy their discussion here.

Ian Abramson’s 7 Minutes in Purgatory Gave a Preview of What Comedy Would Be Like During COVID-19 Pandemic

When it comes to comedians performing without a traditional audience like is the temporary norm for now, you might have heard references to comedy specials recorded years ago from Drew Michael or Harland Williams (Michael recorded it on a sound stage for HBO and Williams stood on a rock in the desert and did his hour).

We’d actually like to point you to something that is an even more apt comparison and a pretty spot on precursor to what how live comedy is performed and consumed right now. The ever innovative Ian Abramson put himself on the map a bit with ultra-innovative (at the time) live comedy show called 7 Minutes in Purgatory where comedians had to perform remotely, though near an actual venue without any chance to hear the laughs of the live audience that was in attendance for the show.

For the crowd, they were treated to watching a live feed of the comedian in the remote performance space and got to watch them try and perform. If you’ve seen a stand-up comedy show on Twitch, Instagram Live, Zoom, etc., you ought to know that 7 Minutes in Purgatory gave us a preview (even though it was unaware of doing so) of what was to come.

It was and is a great show and a daring comedic experiment that had comics recalibrate their act, try a daring bit that leans into the format, or automatically go into uber self-deprecation (exactly like they do now).

As an artifact of the before times, it’s even more fascinating to see what doing comedy in the way we have to do right now was like when we didn’t have to do that.

Get into the Comedy Central digital series version of 7 Minutes of Purgatory, that includes performances from Michelle Buteau, Jon Dore, Maria Bamford, Bobcat Goldthwait & Caitlin Gill, and more here.

Toronto’s JFL42 Has Everything From Carol Burnett to John Mulaney/Pete Davidson to How Did This Get Made? to Eric Andre

As you can clearly see in the flyer above, that headline could go way longer as the more fan-focused JFL festival in Toronto, JFL42, is packed with top shelf talent that covers so many eras, styles, sensibilities, etc. of comedy that it might be worth making the trek out to Toronto to see all of that in one week, especially if you don’t live in LA or NYC.

You’ve got some time as JFL42 isn’t until mid Sept., but you best get your passes and tickets now (the VIP Pass already sold out). Passes are going for $84-$199 (not including service charges). Go get more details and tickets/passes here.

Leave It to Jon Dore to Answer Your Big Questions with Huge Answers

One of Canada’s finest comedy exports, Jon Dore, has an upcoming series at Comedy Central where he will, with as much expertise as he can muster as an “outsider”, answer the biggest questions facing America today.

This trailer is probably only a fraction of what Dore has up his sleeve or, if you’re looking at the thumbnail for the trailer, hidden in his beanie cap.

In any case, it’s sure to be some absurdist gold. Big Questions Huge Answers premieres on Comedy Central on Monday, Dec. 3rd.

If you need more convincing, we’d like to point you to Dore’s “A Dore to Winnipeg”.

We would very much like to watch a reunion panel of TV show starring Greg Proops, Jon Dore, Baron Vaughn, and Gareth Reynolds.

Josh Androsky and Bryan Cook’s Reunited offers up something possibly better with bringing that line-up together for a faux TV series that they starred in without any of them knowing ahead of time what that fake TV show was.

Pretty great, right? Well, you can (and should) get your tickets for the show’s latest edition happening this Friday, January 7th here.

This second season of Ian Abramson’s stand-up-comedy-equivalent-of-a-Skinner-Box, 7 Minutes in Purgatory, really showcases the stark contrast of what performing comedy without an audience while another audience enjoys it in a separate, remote location.

Just see how Maria Bamford beautifully handles performing in front of a 1000 empty seats while there’s a smaller, but mightier number of warm bodies three stories above her thoroughly delighting in her performance.

You can also see how host Ian Abramson, Jon Dore, Michelle Buteau, Colton Dunn, Caitlin Gill and Bobcat Goldthwait all handled the existential quandary of 7 Minutes in Purgatory in all different sorts of ways as well some inside commentary from their fellow performers/purgatory dwellers.

Jon Dore To Star in “The Pickle Recipe”

This might sound redundant, but Jon Dore has just gotten top billing for a movie.

Jon Dore will be starring in an indie heist comedy of sorts where has to steal a grandma’s revered secret pickle recipe. The idea of Dore as the lead has us in high hopes for this movie with having seen previous Dore-centric things like a “Dore to Winnipeg”.

We can only hope that results in Dore doing bits with jars of pickles when on stage and/or during any promotions of the movie.

Though it might not be your home, Tig Notaro and Jon Dore went to homes across America and performed in possibly the most intimate way you could do a comedy show for this Showtime special.

Tonight at 9PM, “Knock Knock, It’s Tig Notaro” is premiering on Showtime. Like so many of her performances, we’re sure that all of these are unforgettable and will have the added silliness of going to where people live to do live comedy.

Again, don’t miss out the premiere at 9PM on Showtime.

Anytime Jon Dore is in the studio at Conan, hijinks are the order of the day and he has a good time retelling the Goldilocks story in the middle of their interview with Tig Notaro and Conan O’Brien offering color commentary.

They also got to talking about their new show where they do stand-up at people’s houses “Knock, Knock, It’s Tig Notaro”, which sounds like it will be great both in concept and from what you can see from their chemistry on Conan.

Showtime got Tig Notaro to do a tour of comedy shows in people’s various homes throughout the country and captured the experience in a documentary special called “Knock Knock, It’s Tig Notaro”.

In addition to the amazing prospect that is Tig performing for an intimate crowd at someone’s house, the brilliant Jon Dore seems to be tagging along as well.

The hysterical Jon Dore went to Winnipeg for two reasons. 1) The Winnipeg Comedy Festival this past April 2) to make a mockumentary of exploring Winnipeg, Canada.

The result is Jon’s “A Dore to Winnipeg” that will premiere on CBC this Fri. at 9PM EST. While many of us here in LA don’t have CBC, you can get a glimpse of what will hopefully come stateside with this clip of Dore visiting the childhood home of Neil Young.

Perhaps, there could be a DVD box set of this and the other experimental documentary set in Winnipeg, Guy Maddin’s My Winnipeg.
