The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 83: Mike Mulloy & Growing Grassroots

October 27, 2021
News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
chappelle, faded comedy, joan rivers, la comedy scene, mike mulloy, the closer

Building your own thing in the thick of a sprawling comedy scene is beyond a tall order. If that thing is a weekly comedy show that expands into an entire brand that now has branched out to the thriving comedy scene in Denver, it’s even more impressive.

That’s exactly what one Mike Mulloy has done with Faded Comedy over the last few years, tirelessly working to make a cornerstone Friday stand-up show (one of the hardest days to pull off a weekly indie comedy show in LA, FYI) and branching out to do more shows, more cities, and do so with the comedians he digs. Faded managed to stay virtual through lockdown and keep going with a virtual presence with their weekly Happy Hours on Twitch and live-streaming in-person shows. Mulloy and TCB’s Jake Kroeger go into how Mike has carved out this niche in LA comedy as well as do “hot” (and some actually hot) takes on more Chappelle “The Closer” non-sense, the Joan Rivers biopic getting nixed, and more.

Follow Mike at @fakemikemulloy on IG and @mikemulloyesq on Twitter Faded Comedy @fadedcomedyla on IG and Twitter, Faded Denver @fadeddenver on Twitter and @fadedcomedydenver on IG, and on Twitch at fadedcomedy.com.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 78: The Comedy Co-Op & Sociocracy

News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
comedy co op, emmys, joan rivers, kathryn hahn, the comedy store

Just a bit over a few weeks ago, a mysterious entity only known as The Comedy Co-op was announced as a group that sought to make comedy better on nearly early level for performers, fans, and people working in comedy.

That was about all when knew back then, but they’ve slowly pulled back the curtain over the weeks explaining exactly who they are (including their ever burgeoning Steering Committee) and what they’re about (as well as what sociocracy is). This week’s TCB Field Report has Jake Kroeger get even a deeper explanation how they’re trying to break some of the more debilitating cycles in the art of comedy with The Comedy Co-op’s very own Blake Wilding, Yaki Margulies, and Nikki Osborne (and a special guest appearance/explanation from Jessica Zepeda).

Also, “hot” takes on the Emmys, The Comedy Store Records, Kathryn Hahn as Joan Rivers, and NYC venues vs. New York City.

Follow The Comedy Co-op @thecomedycoopla on IG, visit thecomedycoopla.com for more info, and get tickets for The First Show on 10/3 @ Junior High here. Follow Blake Wilding @blakewilding, Yaki Margulies @yakimargulies, Nikki Osborne @nikki0h, and Jessica Zepeda @creditcardmommy.

Prolific indie comedy producer Sam Varela is this week’s guest on TCB Field Report. Before quarantine, Sam produced so many wonderful comedy shows in LA and NYC. In quarantine, she immediately transitioned to building up the nightly IG Live stand-up show @comedyquarantine and doing a virtual edition of Picture This!, the live animated comedy show.  Sam zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger to talk keeping comedy going in this pandemic as well as inclusion and accessibility for everyone in that regard. Also, they gives takes on a petition for Eric Andre to host Ellen, unreleased Joan Rivers material that’s going to be released, and the UK’s recovery plans for comedy.

Please follow the shows that Sam produces @comedyquarantine & @picturethiscomedy as well as sign-up for newsletter that will keep you up-to-date on those shows and more at nakedcomedy.org.

Tons of Unreleased Joan Rivers Material To Be Released in 2021

July 31, 2020
News
comedy album, joan rivers, posthumous, stand up comedy

(via Variety)

Of all the forces to be reckoned with in comedy, late comedy legend Joan Rivers was one of the most renowned, if not the most renowned. Rivers carved out an empire with her comedy, seemingly with her own will and determination, and kept it going right until she passed away in 2014.

Comedy Dynamics has collected “hundreds of hours of content from the Joan Rivers Estate, with plans to release a box set and digital albums.”

There’s no specific date announced yet and exactly how many hundreds of hours that Comedy Dynamics has or how much of it they’ll plan to release has yet to be determined, but it ought to be a treasure trove of not only following Rivers’ through decades and decades of comedy, but also seeing how comedy itself shifted as reflected through Rivers (someone who adapted as much as she could throughout the entirety of her very, very lengthy career).

In fact, this release might cover more time than any other comedy release in history including the multi-decade, multi-album The Chronicles of Federman. Whenever 2021 comes around, we’ll get to follow the Joan Rivers rabbit hole as deep as it probably goes.

In the gigantic crowd of Grammy nominees, finding the comedy winners might be a little difficult, especially since they’re never all announced during the telecast.

So, we’ve hunted through all them and found 2015 Grammy winners in or somehow connected to comedy.

Best Comedy Album-Weird Al Yankovic “Mandatory Fun”
Best Spoken Word Album-Joan Rivers “Diary of a Mad Diva”
Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media-Alexandre Desplat “The Grand Budapest Hotel”
Best Metal Performance-Tenacious D-“The Last In Line”

Honestly, there are no surprises here and we’re glad to see Yankovic cap off his 2014 Billboard #1 album with a Grammy win.

Now you can go enjoy the rest of your evening with Better Call Saul and Last Week Tonight.

Here Are The Comedy Nominees for The 2015 Grammys

Uncategorized
everything is awesome, grammys, jim gaffigan, joan rivers, louis ck, mandatory fun, obsessed, oh my god, patton oswalt, sarah silverman, tenacious d, tragedy plus comedy equals time, we are miracles, weird al yankovic

The Grammys have just announced the majority of the nominees for their 83 categories, which include Best Recording Package, Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package, Best Album Notes, Best Contemporary Christian Music Album, and Best Comedy Album.

Of course, we’re only concerned with comedy here rather than how an album is packaged or what music is playing in your local chapel’s gift shop, so the nominees for Best Comedy Album are:

“Mandatory Fun”-Weird Al Yankovic
“Obsessed”-Jim Gaffigan
“Oh My God”-Louis C.K.
“Tragedy Plus Comedy Equals Time”-Patton Oswalt
“We Are Miracles”-Sarah Silverman

Honestly, it’ll be hard to tell who’s going to win as Silverman has an Emmy for We Are Miracles, Yankovic scored #1 Billboard spot with Mandatory Fun, and Oswalt, C.K., and Gaffigan are critically and commercially amongst the top tier of funniest people in comedy right now.

Also, we’d like to note that Joan Rivers got nominated posthumously in the Best Spoken Word Album category for “Diary of a Mad Diva”, Tenacious D got nominated for Best Metal Performance for covering Dio’s “The Last in Line”, and Tegan & Sara and The Lonely Island’s “Everything Is Awesome” from The Lego Movie got nominated for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

See the full list, if you dare, of nominees here.

Turns out David Letterman is a big fan of Billy on the Street and Billy Eichner. In fact, he’s so much a fan that he gleefully played one of Billy’s game while Eichner was on The Late Show and thoroughly enjoyed getting answers wrong.

Billy also shared his experiences with the late Joan Rivers who was also a fan of Billy’s and helped him get noticed.

It’s always a delight when Mel Brooks is anywhere on TV, but he’s especially a fun watch when he’s on late night. Brooks has so many amazing, hilarious stories that he could just keep telling them every night and seemingly never run out.

Such is the case with his appearance on Conan last night with the one time he filled in for Joan Rivers on her late night talk show and the prank he pulled when leaving his handprints in cement at the famous Chinese Theater in Hollywood.

Conan O’Brien and Chris Hardwick, David Letterman, Jimmy Kimmel and Sarah Silverman, Seth Meyers, Jon Stewart, and Craig Ferguson all paid their respects to Rivers on their respective programs.

R.I.P. Joan Rivers, 1933-2014

Only a few hours ago, Joan Rivers, after being hospitalized and put into a medically induced coma, has passed away at the age of 81. She leaves a unbelievably long whirlwind of a career in comedy where Joan fiercely fought and clawed for everything she’s gotten on her terms as you can clearly see in the documentary Piece of Work.

While people are posting clips of her stand up, interviews, etc. today in remembrance, please know, no matter how ribald, risqué, controversial, or “blue” Joan has gotten, she has always went for the joke regardless of how far she had to take it and made herself a legend for that.

Joan Rivers Resolves WGA Dispute by Not Rending Writing Services

From the fallout of her writers at Fashion Police and their strike, Joan Rivers was up for a possible expulsion at the WGA, but has thus decided to support the writers by not rendering any writing services in hopes that the striking writers will return.

Currently, amongst those striking writers, Eliza Skinner currently writes for Totally Biased with W. Kamau Bell and Bryan Cook tours with his Competitive Erotic Fan Fiction.

As of the time of this article, there is no word if the writers will return yet.

Joan Rivers Facing WGA Expulsion Hearing Over ‘Fashion Police’ Next Month

While the writers of Fashion Police are still technically on strike, little news has come for them making headway in receiving their unpaid wages. However, showrunner Joan Rivers could face expulsion and more in an upcoming WGA East hearing for violating WGA regulations regarding working on Non-WGA sanctioned shows.

Either way the hearing goes will be a precedent set for being a staff writer on certain shows.

WGA East Charges Joan Rivers With Violation in ‘Fashion Police’ Writers Dispute

A WGA East council took a vote and determined to send violation charges to Joan Rivers over the Fashion Police Writers’ Strike. According to Rivers’ manager, the issue is between the writers and E!, which has been one of the only remarks sent down from Rivers in regards to the whole matter.
The writers of Fashion Police are still on strike and developments towards a resolution are still to be seen.

1) Unlike Judy Carter suggests in one of her bestselling books, dinner with a table full of comedians is not incredibly depressing.  It’s actually the antithesis of the stereotype/notion.  In fact, two tables of LA comics on a Christmas Eve in Chinatown will turn into a spirited competition of who can order first, who is having more fun, and whether to trade members of each table for another.  As comedian Ed Salazar said to comedian Eli Olsberg, “Our table will be blogged about.”  For the record, Ed’s table was the better table.  Yes, I was sitting at “that” table.  Either way, some people think we, comedians, are a depressing bunch, which has a basis in truth, but that’s not all of who we are.  As obsessive, impulsive, and condescending distorted caricatures of actual people as we may come off, all of it is all in the goal of going on lit stage and getting laughs in a darkened room full of strangers.  So on this Christmas morning, or whenever you happen to be reading this, appreciate comedians, not only as ones that inspire laughter when you need it the most, but also as hard-working real people that strive diligently at their craft through much personal sacrifice.  Perhaps, give them a hug, if they deserve it and if they’re OK with their personal space.  HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE COMEDY BUREAU/JAKE KROEGER TO ALL OF YOU IN THE LA COMEDY COMMUNITY AND JUST GOOD FOLKS THAT LIKE LAUGHING!!!

2) Just one more night without a COMEDY CRAWL as we all, in the LA comedy community, attempt to attain some sort of temporary normalcy.

3) OPEN MIC RUN: ARE YOU KIDDING ME RIGHT NOW? You WANT to do an open mic on Christmas Day? Try working on your material while opening gifts.  Does that sound like a good idea?  Of course, it doesn’t.  That’s why you should just enjoy Christmas.

4) Yesterday, I wrote about James Adomian’s inspired performance that included a painfully hilarious story about opening for Joan Rivers.  It’s definitely one of the better “road” stories I’ve heard and there’s actually visual proof of it RIGHT HERE.

5) Paul F. Tompkins was actually trending on Twitter both in Los Angeles and NYC last night.

All of this came about for his live tweeting during the Pope’s Midnight Mass, which, in thinking about it, IS the Christmas gift that Tompkins gives to us all.  Follow @PFtompkins and read all tweets with #midnightmass2010.

6) The Comedy Bureau “Tips Its Hat” today to GOOD NEIGHBOR-“best videos contest 3” Making the thought of absurdity in of itself absurd, amazing sketch group Good Neighbor attacks your senses in the best, most enjoyable way possible at such a furious pace that it’s really unimaginable not to get a kick out of them.  Featuring seasoned performers Nick Rutherford, Beck Bennett, Kyle Mooney, and non-performer/filmmaker Dave McCary, Good Neighbor is a treat to watch and should not be missed.  Check their website or back at the Comedy Bureau for details on their next performance.

7) From the “You Should Have Been There” Lagoon: Blackadder’s Christmas Carol Part 1 of 5 [on Youtube] (My favorite Christmas Special of all time)

8) Donate.  It’s Christmas.  Even if you don’t celebrate, it’s a pretty convenient time to donate to the Comedy Bureau.

9) Many people thank me for my personal dedication to this blog and to all of them, I heartily say, “You’re quite welcome.”.  To anyone who doubts this fact, I am writing this at 2:43AM Christmas Morning.
