TCB Debriefing 11/4/23: Jessica Sele, Atsuko Okatsuka, James Austin Johnson, Curb Your Enthusiasm, F Marry Kill

November 4, 2023
News
atsuko okatsuka, blonde medicine, comedy album, curb your enthusiasm, james austin johnson, jessica sele, lucy hale, seth meyers, stand up comedy, weird vibes

1. Nailing a comedy album title is often a quietly difficult challenge. Many a comedian try sidestepping it by just going the “Live at…” route while others fall short of the mark with a goofy name coupled with a corny pose for the album cover. For our money, the deeply funny Jessica Sele not only comedically lives up to the pitch perfect album title of Weird Vibes, her brand new record from venerable comedy record label Blonde Medicine, but she embodies it. Sele never ceases to surprise and has us snickering throughout the whole hour in fully embracing her own strangeness in every aspect of her life and presenting so frankly, but doing so with a gleeful awkwardness. All told, Weird Vibes radiates pretty sweet vibes. Weird Vibes is now streaming and available now wherever you get your comedy albums.

2. Not only is Atsuko Okatsuka full grown, but she is a bonafide comedy star. Just look at this tour schedule and sold out dates (and those added dates that you should get tix for if you’re anywhere around those cities).

2. James Austin Johnson, yet again, proves that he’s the perfect weapon at SNL on his Late Night with Seth Meyers appearance this week.

3. Season 12 of Curb Your Enthusiasm is set for Feb. 2024. Perhaps, it’ll be an early Valentine’s gift on 2/12?

4. Turns out F*ck Marry Kill will be the latest game to be adapted into feature film (THR). This adaptation will, of course, not shy away from the nature of the game and, instead, lean into it with star Lucy Hale trying to figure out which of the three guys she’s dating is a local serial killer and which are F or marriage material. With all of that in mind, we are curious as to who owns the trademark to F Marry Kill if anyone.

5. We’ll leave you with this: Yes, this TCB Debriefing is a day late because we run this site all on our own and book a theater, so apologies for this and any future delays (and thank you kindly for reading).

Pick of the Day: James Austin Johnson: The Age of JAJ (in LA) 7/29

June 21, 2023
News
james austin johnson, largo, los angeles comedy, stand up comedy

We remember James Austin Johnson, now a Saturday Night Live star, once went up at an open mic we used to host in Little Tokyo, eons ago, and crooned out Eagles songs done in full-on Scottish accent to raucous laughter. That was the very first time we saw him and, even then, we had a pretty good idea that he’d end up where he is now from just that set (and the same goes for pretty much every subsequent set we saw after that).

Having multiple seasons under his belt, JAJ is far from that open mic in a Mexican bar and restaurant that’s now a Metro LA station and on to touring all around the globe. Fortunately, one of those stops is back here in LA at none other than the venerable Largo at the Coronet Theatre.

Indeed, JAJ will stop at Largo for his Age of JAJ tour on Sat. Jul. 29th at 8PM. You can (and should) go get your tickets now for $46 a pop here.

Pick of the Day: WAR (in NYC) Mondays Starting 3/27

March 13, 2023
News
brooklyn, dave ross, james austin johnson, neel ghosh, nyc comedy, stand up comedy, union hall

Over the last couple of years, whether you know it or not, NYC has gotten some true gems from the LA comedy scene. Namely, James Austin Johnson, Neel Ghosh, and Dave Ross have relocated to New York and spreading their honed comedy wares across the five boroughs. They all had their own respective, cherished comedy happenings that they built out in LA (Rod Stewart Live, Night Voyage, Good Heroin), but they’re set on making their mark in NYC (especially if they’re not already on SNL… yet).

So, these three hysterical LA-to-NYC transplants are banding together to make use of the fact that are way more night owls in New York and are setting up a weekly late night, Monday stand-up show at Brooklyn’s venerable comedy stage, Union Hall. What are they calling this 10PM Monday night comedy hang in Park Slope that’s probably equal parts chill and madcap fun? WAR. Perhaps, a perfect name?

WAR commences on (most) Mondays at Union Hall starting Mar. 27th at $11.55 a pop. Go get tickets over and over here.

Pick of the Day: Hopkins & Friends (in NYC) 1/22

January 18, 2023
News
adam pally, daniel simonsen, dina hashem, ilana glazer, james austin johnson, jess hopkins, moses storm, nyc comedy, phoebe robinson, stand up comedy, the stand

Sometimes, there’s just an amazing line-up for a classic stand-up show at a comedy club and tickets are still available for not a crazy price and those things together are worthy of highlighting.

Such is the case of Hopkins & Friends at The Stand this Sunday. Along with host Jess Hopkins, an incredibly choice NYC line-up of Adam Pally, Phoebe Robinson, Moses Storm, Daniel Simonsen, James Austin Johnson, Dina Hashem, Ilana Glazer, and John Hopkins (assuming that’s not someone from the prestigious medical institution?) will be taking The Stand’s Main Room stage at 8PM on Jan. 22nd and you ought to know that will be one hell of a show.

Also, tickets are only $25 (and there’s no item minimum). Go get ’em before they sell out here.

Pick of the Day: Return of JAJ (James Austin Johnson) to LA (5/25-5/31)

May 17, 2022
News
better half, elysian, james austin johnson, los angeles comedy, rod stewart live, whammy media

It seems like decades ago, but it was only a handful of years ago when rumblings of the amazing comedy stylings of James Austin Johnson were rumbling around the comedy scene here in LA. His excruciatingly spot-on, yet alternative reality based impressions and off-the-wall conceptual bits made JAJ truly stand out in the expansive comedy landscape in Los Angeles.

Then, last year, he got SNL and kicked off the season with playing Joe Biden (and Trump) perfectly. We can’t think of another cast member that had a debut like that in the entire history of the Saturday Night Live. Consequently, that did require James to relocate to NYC and delight all five boroughs with his beautifully strange comedy.

James is making a trek back to LA for a week from 5/25-5/31 and is doing a flurry of shows including the 7 year anniversary of the stand-up show he started with Sam Wiles and Zach Pugh, Rod Stewart Live as well as his solo show Close To You at the Elysian.

If you’re somehow not already following comedy treasure James Austin Johnson on socials @shrimpjaj, do so now to keep up with these LA dates (or any other dates he has coming up). Get tickets for those shows at linktr.ee/Shrimpjaj.

Pick of the Day: James Austin Johnson-Close To You Tour (in NYC) 8/11

April 7, 2022
News
bell house, brooklyn comedy, james austin johnson, nyc comedy, snl

The debut season of James Austin Johnson has been a whirlwind unlike almost any other cast member in SNL history and the comedic craftsmanship and prowess of JAJ are wholly responsible for that.

That said, what you’ve seen on the show, if you haven’t had the treasured experience of seeing Johnson live, is only scratching the surface of how James Austin Johnson can hysterically dazzle you. His repertoire of voices and characters and cleverness with which they’re wrought are so damn delightful that you really shouldn’t miss out on a chance to see him.

James will be embarking on his Close To You tour this Summer during the off-months of SNL and will be specifically stopping in at The Bell House at Thurs. Aug. 11th at 7:30PM ET. Tickets are on sale right now and you should go snag ’em at $25 a pop before they inevitably sell out here.

James Austin Johnson Breaks Down the Specifics of His Trump Impression and Having a “Yuge” SNL Debut

January 25, 2022
News
james austin johnson, late night, seth meyers, snl

Just like in his SNL debut, James Austin Johnson is the very first of the new cast members on this 47th season of Saturday Night Live to make a late night appearance. Johnson, unlike almost any other cast member in the history of the show, appeared as the core character in this season opening cold open sketch as President Biden.

Since then, JAJ has appeared in several sketches throughout this season almost as if he was a full cast member.

Johnson sat down with Seth Meyers on Late Night to share his whirlwind life changing move to NYC after finding out he got SNL and gets into the nitty gritty with how he perfected his very specific, very brilliant Trump impression.

Please enjoy his interview here and here, which we’re sure will be the first of many late night appearances.

Pick of the Day: Rod Stewart Live: The Return of James Austin Johnson and Sarah Squirm (in LA) 10/27

News
james adomian, james austin johnson, los angeles comedy, permanent records roadhouse, rod stewart live, sarah squirm, solomon georgio

It was only a few short weeks ago that LA comedy favorites James Austin Johnson and Sarah Squirm were plucked to be on SNL and blazing a trail ever since. SNL is taking a week off and letting them do whatever they want, which, thankfully, includes coming back to LA and getting in on shows here once more.

One of them will be the show that JAJ help found, Rod Stewart Live, now happening at Permanent Records Roadhouse in the Eastside’s Glassell Park this coming Wed. Oct. 27th at 8PM PT. They’ll be joined by an equally fantastic bill of Solomon Georgio and James Adomian and RSL co-hosts Sam Wiles and Zach Pugh.

The show is only $10 (proof of vaccination required). Go get your tickets here before they sell out (they usually sell out anyway and we bet this’ll go even faster.

Aristotle Athari, James Austin Johnson, and Sarah Sherman (AKA Sarah Squirm) Are the Newest SNL Cast Members

September 27, 2021
News
aristotle athari, james austin johnson, sarah sherman, sarah squirm, Saturday Night Live, snl

The latest additions to the comedy institution that is Saturday Night Live is three of the LA comedy scene’s favorites. Aristotle Athari who we hope you would know from Goatface Comedy and James Austin Johnson who we’d hope you know from him doing some of the best characters/impressions in comedy right now @shrimpjaj and Sarah Sherman (AKA Sarah Squirm) who we’d hope you know from being the ringleader of Helltrap Nightmare will be the three new featured players for this season of SNL that starts back up this Saturday, Oct. 2nd.

Athari, Johnson, and Sherman might be the most well rounded additions that SNL has had in awhile as they are all multi-disciplinary comedians that all excel doing stand-up, characters, and working behind the scenes to create some of the most unique and hysterical content out there. They’ve all got their own streak of absurdity that, in so many ways, is as beautiful as it is funny. Go down a YouTube/IG rabbit hole if you’re not familiar with them already.

We truly hope they get to weave their voices in making SNL something new and subversive and thrilling (like Bowen Yang has gotten to do in the last year).

Look for their debut on SNL this Saturday, Oct. 2nd at 11:30PM ET/8:30PM PT on NBC (and streaming on Peacock).

Welcome to the cast!

James Austin Johnson Gives a Impersonated Summary of Joe Biden’s Inauguration

January 21, 2021
News
impersonation, james austin johnson, joe biden

For all the years that we’ve enjoy James Austin Johnson really giving us the most entertaining, not threatening impersonation of Trump, we will now get to enjoy JAJ doing his take on Biden.

Once again, he not only is a master of voices, but really distills the comedy so purely out of what’s going on these days.

Please enjoy this first take on Joe Biden with James Austin Johnson giving a very quick summary of yesterday’s events as Biden got sworn in as the 46th President of the United States.

Also, someone hire/pay James Austin Johnson a lot of money to do all of these genius voices/characters already (in case that wasn’t clear with how much we love him here at TCB).

Watch James Austin Johnson’s More Truthful Version of Trump’s Speech to the White Domestic Terrorists That Stormed the Capitol Yesterday

January 7, 2021
News
james austin johnson, trump impression

James Austin Johnson earned his spot on our 100 Best Things in Comedy We Were Witness To Despite a Pandemic in No Particular Order of 2020 for his masterful Trump impression.

As Trump is still flailing in the death rattle of his presidency, JAJ makes sure we get to the real spirit of what Trump is trying to say as he is mentally unstable and largely incoherent and has been for quite some time. So, enjoy this latest impression/translation of Trump’s pathetic speech he gave yesterday that was supposed to calm down the white supremacist domestic terrorists that stormed Capitol Hill yesterday, but, of course, was compassionate to their cause instead.

Also, note James’ ability to do this while driving and that this is only one of the plethora of voices and characters he can do and that he should most certainly be working way more.

Trump Claims Early Victory (in Beating Pokemon) Thanks to James Austin Johnson

November 4, 2020
News
james austin johnson, pokemon, satire, trump, trump impression

Once again, James Austin Johnson delivers an elegant, yet almost effortless (seemingly made during a road trip) offering of his Trump impression, made special for Trump post-Election Day as he whines about winning before all the votes are counted.

Here, James imbues his deep knowledge of the world of Pokemon through Trump-speak for DJT to claim a false early victory in the world of Pokemon (the early Blue and Red versions that is).

We can only hope that going forward from today that JAJ will make these videos with a decisive Trump loss and diving into further video game lore at the same time.

Without further adieu, please enjoy JAJ’s latest here.

The Comedy Bureau Field Report Ep. 31: James Austin Johnson vs. Trump

News, The Comedy Bureau Field Report
apple tv plus, borat, cuomo, de blasio, james austin johnson, jon stewart, richard pryor, trump impression, what things are what things

You might have come across the magnificent comedy of James Austin Johnson via one of many spectacular, spot-on, yet absurdly bent Trump impressions, but one ought to know that Johnson has been offering up hysterical flights of absurdist comedy fancy for several years (even some of which was captured on our TCB compilation album). Johnson zooms with TCB’s Jake Kroeger about balancing the forced rest from live comedy due to quarantine, finding his way to being one of the best Trump impressions in all of comedy right now, and maintaining the madcap game show podcast he co-hosts, What Things Are What Things. Also, hot takes on the new Pryor biopic, Cuomo/de Blasio getting sued by small venues, Jon Stewart’s new gig at AppleTV+, and Borat: Subsequent Moviefilm.

Oh, unfortunately, Jake didn’t have hiccups this week because he is recovering quite nicely from his emergency appendectomy.

Enjoy James Austin Johnson’s Take on Trump’s Absurd Call to Fox Business About Dealing with COVID-19

October 9, 2020
News
fox business, james austin johnson, maria bartiromo, parody, satire, trump

James Austin Johnson‘s Trump impression has been one of the best around and is starting to get more and more notoriety as such, especially with JAJ’s understanding how Trump gets lost in doing non-sequiturs and tangents while attempting to speak extemporaneously. The experimental drugs that Trump is currently on due to testing positive for COVID-19 seem to having speak even more insane than he usually does, allowing for JAJ to really get off the rails with his impression.

Earlier this week, Trump called into Fox Business to speak with Maria Bartiromo and went off about he didn’t feel contagious. JAJ made a more enjoyable (potentially less terrifying?) take on it. Please enjoy it here.

Please Revel in James Austin Johnson’s Impression of Trump with COVID-19

October 2, 2020
News

Sure, so many impressions of Trump have arisen over the years of this seemingly interminable administration of his presidency. It can be hard to parse out the folks that truly nail the impression (not to mention that you probably try to manage how much you intake of his voice as possible at this point).

That being said, Donald Trump being infected with the novel Coronavirus, COVID-19 presents a rare time where Trump probably doesn’t want to be on camera or even be interviewed if he’s really sick. So, we’d like to point out James Austin Johnson‘s brilliant, spot-on take of Trump (that he has done so many fun things with in the past including speaking in Radiohead lyrics) as he bedridden with COVID-19.

We can only hope that Trump has such a cough as depicted here for your convenience to revel in.

Please Watch and Enjoy “The Lot”, a Short Film from David Gborie and Steven Feinartz

The tapestry of David Gborie’s life is full of many a colorful, colorful threads (some of which are a little darker than the others) that each have their own very enticing story.

Even the time that David spent gathering shopping carts for a grocery store has a great tale to it. Hence, the short film “The Lot” from Gborie (whose is the voice of Comedy Central and has a half hour special this year) and co-writer/director Steven Feinartz (The Bitter Buddha, director of many a great comedy special) hilariously draws from that particular vignette in the life of David Gborie (and just scored itself a Vimeo Staff Pick).

So, without further adieu, please enjoy this short film The Lot here.

The Comedy Bureau, an LA comedy institution that has served the art form of comedy and Los Angeles since 2010, has handpicked “secret” recordings of their “comedians of interest” and release them to the public on an album through the venerable AST Records. More specifically, these 6 acts contained within this record are comedians that TCB believes have not gotten nearly enough of the attention they deserve. They are hysterical, original, innovative, and should be watched be very close by all. Knowing this, commit their names to memory: Anna Seregina, James Austin Johnson, Ahmed Bharoocha, Candice Thompson, The Walsh Brothers, and Eric Dadourian.

You can (and really, really should) get Comedians of Interest Vol. 1. It comes out on Friday, October 20th, but is available for pre-order now here.

Since time immemorial, comedians have often lived together in what many would considered cramped, messy, and raucous living situations. Comedians, for the most part, think it’s just fine.

In this latest golden era of comedy, there’s a whole new excitement brewing in the underground and, with the aid of the Internet, it’s not quite as underground (i.e. no one has ever heard of it) as it used to be.

Lance Bangs explores this subculture that’s bridging its way to the big time, though, on its own terms, in his Viceland series Flophouse. Specifically, he goes through these comedian ‘flophouses’ and then sees them all put on a live show on a rooftop, in a back yard, in a garage, etc.

Here’s a trailer for Flophouse in case you’re curious as to what this all looks like and haven’t gotten the luck to go to a house comedy show.

By the way, featured in the trailer are:
Kate Willett, Clare O’Kane, Solomon Georgio, Amy Miller, Brent Weinbach, Brandon Wardell, Eric Dadourian, Dave Stone, Maria Bamford, James Adomian, Sean Patton, James Austin Johnson, David Gborie, Steve Agee, and much more.

Look for Flophouse to come to Vice’s new Viceland on Feb. 29th.
