Chris Gethard Presents Is Continuing Their Marathon Livestream on Twitch

chris gethard, chris gethard presents, mnn

In the ongoing quest of finding things to do during these weird times, might we suggest something that you haven’t look to yet because you’ve probably spent a lot of time binging on Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime etc. etc.

A few months back Chris Gethard returned to his public access TV roots to highlight his favorite comedians and also give them a platform to make a show the way they want with Chris Gethard Presents. They’ve already featured such wondrous talents from all around NYC as Sam Taggart & Max Wittert, Megan Stalter, Mary Houlihan, Monroe Martin, Christi Chiello.

You can watch clips over at their YouTube channel OR you could watch the full episodes as they were intended to be watched during an ongoing (even as we typed this out and posted this) marathon over at Twitch. They’ve got episodes streaming back-to-back throughout all hours of the days today and tomorrow (and maybe even more).

Robby Hoffman is at it again.

“It” being commandeering beloved and retired The Chris Gethard Show to do her own version of the show, which is arguably a very on-brand TCGS to continue to the show.

Hoffman’s version of the show gets into similar beautiful and hilarious chaos that Gethard did, but does so with her own cheeky alpha energy. Also, special guests could range from comedians, actors, etc. all the way to real estate agents making for a truly unpredictable, but downright hysterical night.

Tickets usually sell out for this, so best go get them for $12 right now (even though the show is a month away).

Chris Gethard Makes a Sweet, Heartfelt Love Letter to New Jersey with “Taylor Ham, Egg, and Cheese”

Most love letters don’t come in the form of a comedy album. In fact, it’s hard to think of any hour of stand-up comedy being a love letter to anything (save for Blake Wexler’s album of voicemails from Todd Glass).

Leave it to Chris Gethard, the comedian who likely wears his heart on his sleeve more than anyone else in comedy, to dedicate an album something he loves deeply, his home state of New Jersey.

This album, Taylor Ham, Egg, and Cheese is indeed chock full of Jersey intricacies, references, and name checks greeted with hollers and applause. Gethard flexes the depth of his Jersey identity here, but, to the Jersey uninitiated, you don’t feel lost throughout. The sheer love that he has for the place, the people, and the way his experiences with the two shaped him into the punk rock sweetheart comedian that he is today emanates through every bit and becomes the core of the humor. No one really loves Jersey quite like Gethard and he shows how beautiful of a thing that is.

If you’re looking for some sweetness in your comedy, please listen to and enjoy Chris Gethard’s Taylor Ham, Egg, and Cheese here or on Spotify.

This very riveting documentary short Laughing Matters: The Funny Business of Being Sad from SoulPancake, Funny or Die, director Mike Bernstein, and producer/editor Georgia Koch shows how depression has woven its way through the lives of many of your favorite comedic writers, actors, and stand-ups and how they’ve managed to cope.

Included in the doc are harrowing stories of such celebrated funny people Chris Gethard, Sarah Silverman, Rachel Bloom, Baron Vaughn, Neal Brennan, Aparna Nancherla, Rainn Wilson, Sara Benincasa, Riki Lindhome, Wayne Brady, and Anna Akana.

It is indeed #WorldMentalHealthDay and it’s especially worth watching today, but how Laughing Matters effectively navigates the thread of everyone journey with depression, anxiety, and more in this doc is pretty amazing and worth a watch at any time. It’s yet another reminder of how prolific issues with mental health are and why it’s important to take care of it and to know that you’re not alone in how you feel (even though it might feel that way)

You can (and should) watch it here.

Chris Gethard Presents Series Premiere Is Tonight, Starting with Carmen Christopher

Chris Gethard’s latest comedy experiment, Chris Gethard Presents, which is essentially a showcase that allows Gethard’s handpicked favorites to also experiment as they see fit, back at public access at MNN (where The Chris Gethard Show’s roots are) officially kicks off tonight.

While it is airing on Manhattan Neighborhood Network, you can stream it live here at 8PM PST/11PM EST, then watch it archived on YouTube here.

The very first episode will be brought to you by the mind and comedic stylings of Carmen Christopher, a wonderful weirdo out of NYC that has a whole host of characters in addition to doing stand-up all over, as The Great Night Show with Carmen Christopher.

Watch it live or watch it later (just watch it somehow) because we have a good feeling about what Chris is cooking up here.

Chris Gethard Is Returning to Public Access TV for Chris Gethard Presents

If there’s one thing you can expect from Chris Gethard, it’s truly to expect the unexpected. From The Chris Gethard Show to Beautiful Anonymous and everything in between, Gethard’s career in and around comedy has been quite the amazing winding road that no one, except maybe for Chris, can see what’s up ahead.

So, another such move comes with Gethard returning to his public access TV roots at Manhattan Neighborhood Network, though not to revive TCGS. Gethard will be, instead, having a platform to showcase his favorite performers every week (in similar fashion to him handing the TCGS slot to The Special Without Brett Davis) simply called Chris Gethard Presents.

Chris can fill you in on the details here.

As we hinted at above, it’s both a surprising and a not-so-surprising move that is altogether still very intriguing given Chris’ track record for doing what’s daring. Certainly, public access allows for more of that than linear TV.

Chris Gethard Presents will premiere Wednesdays at MNN HD starting Jun. 26th at 11PM EST, which will be conveniently 8PM PST over in LA. You can stream it for FREE here.

Trailer for SoulPancake and Funny or Die’s Mental Health Doc “It’s Not That Funny”

Though the thumbnail here says that “comedy won’t save you”, we will say that comedy has done a lot to shine a light on the importance of mental health via the struggles of many a comedian (though it’s not a pre-requisite to be depressed to do comedy) with anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, bipolar disorder, etc.

SoulPancake and Funny or Die are continuing with that notion with this documentary It’s Not That Funny featuring Sarah Silverman, Chris Gethard, Wayne Brady, Sara Benincasa, and more talking frankly about how they’ve managed and dealt with their mental health while in comedy.

See a bit of it for yourself with this trailer.

We’re guessing if you’re a fan of the Hilarious World of Depression, this will be right up your alley. Look for It’s Not That Funny to release soon via SoulPancake and Funny or Die.

If you think about it, if The Chris Gethard Show was to be handed off to someone in its entirety, it would be unofficial, unauthorized, and keep the name even though someone not named Chris Gethard would be hosting, right?

Well, that’s what happening at the Lyric Hyperion on Fri., Feb. 8th at 8PM with the very, very funny Robby Hoffman (former writer and featured performer on TCGS).

Chris Gethard’s official statement on this whole happening is as follows:

“I am not involved in this and don’t really understand why it’s happening or what it is, but I love Robby, so go for broke. Again, this show in no way reflects, represents, or is The Chris Gethard Show.”

Whatever happens, we’re sure it’ll be some damn fun, controlled chaos (which is the true spirit of TCGS, isn’t it?). Go get tickets for the show for $8 here.

It’s not often that Chris Gethard swings by LA, so you really ought not to pass up a chance to see him.

Also, a live taping of his amazing podcast Beautiful Anonymous is another thing that you should make plans for whenever it happens.

On top of all of that, Chris is out promoting his upcoming life advice book, Lose Well, and, at this point, you’re probably going to want to check that out too. It comes out on Oct. 16th, but if you pre-order right now, “Chris will send you a video message, an audio file you can use as your outgoing voicemail message, or he’ll call you directly for a two-minute chat!”

Luckily, you can do all three on Wed., Oct. 24th at Dynasty Typewriter. Tickets are $40, which will include a copy of Lose Well. Get a ticket here ASAP (we have a feeling it might sell out.

“The Chris Gethard Show is dead. Long live The Chris Gethard Show. It’s official! The Chris Gethard Show is canceled. Kaput. No more!” -Chris Gethard

TruTV has opted to cancel The Chris Gethard Show on their network and Gethard himself has decided, after much reflection on how it has stopped growing and evolving in a way that’s true to him and the fans, to permanently end the show.

While it’s sad to such a beloved thing come to an end, take a moment to marvel at Gethard and company’s accomplishments. They took to public access to do whatever they wanted on their terms (and did so with abandon) and built a cult following. Then, they got a pilot, then picked up at Fusion, then picked up at TruTV. Looking back at the long history of TCGS, it has lasted longer than most TV shows and certainly has a fan base that is dedicated far beyond your average die hard loyal TV show fan.

It’s hard to imagine any other show in all of television history accomplishing such a feat.

As to what lies next for Gethard, Beautiful Anonymous, Gethard’s podcast, is only getting bigger and bigger every week along with a bit of experimentation over the last year or so and Chris continues to do stand-up across the country.

So, perhaps another comedy special? Perhaps, a Beautiful Anonymous comedy special? We’re not sure entirely. Honestly, we think something completely different from all of that from Gethard wouldn’t be out of the realm of possibility.

We’ll just have to wait and see what Gethard sets his mind and his heart towards next.

For now, R.I.P. The Chris Gethard Show.

Judd Apatow Gets Looks of Concern in Trailer for His Netflix Special

On December 12th, a brand new comedy special from Judd Apatow will stream on Netflix. It won’t be some sort of variety TV special. It will be an hour of stand-up special from the writer/director/producer that used to do stand-up several years ago, first coming up with Adam Sandler before heading off to writing gigs at places like The Larry Sanders Show.

As it turns out, the idea of Judd Apatow: The Return as a stand-up special has caused some alarm for comedians who he has personally worked with behind the camera over the years.

See for yourself in this trailer what Chris Gethard, Amy Schumer, Mike Birbiglia, and more have to “say” to Apatow about returning to doing stand-up.

We like where TruTV is doubling down on their money.

See what grievances Justin read aloud to make his boss Chris Gethard a little anxious while Wanda Sykes and Shannon O’Neill watched with delight on this week’s TCGS here.

Here’s How to Watch This Upcoming, Completely Live Season of The Chris Gethard Show

To the best of their ability, The Chris Gethard Show crew wants to make sure as many people around the U.S. can tune into the completely and totally live broadcast of their third season on TruTV. Unlike SNL being on NBC, it’s a little trickier to have broadcast a show live on air on a cable network.

So, they made this guide to cable and non-cable, East Coast, non-East Coast, and live audiences so you can catch the happy madness go down with the rest of the Gethard faithful.

Basically, this is how it will work:

  • US East Coast viewers with a cable subscription that includes truTV can watch live as it airs.
  • US Non-East Coast viewers with a cable subscription that includes truTV can watch live on the website or through the app.
  • Non-cable subscribers can watch live through Sling TV, Hulu with Live TV, Direct Now and Playstation Vue.
  • Come to a taping! The show films in midtown Manhattan at 11PM on Thursdays. Ticket requests for each week will go live 8 days before the episode airs, and can be found here.

For international viewers that want to watch, they’re working on it.

Oh, most importantly, remember that this season 3 premiere will air live on Thursday, August 3rd 11PM EST/8PM PST.

From the humblest of beginnings, The Chris Gethard Show has made it to its 3rd season as a full fledged TV show on cable television while circling back to its devil may care, public access roots by broadcasting completely live (w/10 second delay).

Hopefully, you’ll get a sense of the beautifully controlled chaos that Gethard wrangles for his show and definitely see way more risks be taken than what happens on SNL.

Watch the season premiere of The Chris Gethard Show, as well as a bit of TV history, on Thursday, August 3rd at 8PM PST/11PM EST on TruTV.

While Ryan Seacrest will join Kelly Ripa in greeting America in the morning despite Chris Gethard’s very earnest pleas for that gig, Chris Gethard and gang will be returning for a nice, big new season at a new network.

After spending some time at Fusion, TCGS will now move on to TruTV (honestly, it’s a better fit) for 16 episodes.

Best of all, Gethard will get to do what made TCGS great by broadcasting the show live. It’s not “live to tape” like so many live TV shows. It will be aired as it’s happening and few in the world are as great as handling that controlled chaos as well as Chris Gethard.

Look for the new season The Chris Gethard Show at TruTV in August.

Just announced today, SF will be getting another giant comedy festival in the summertime, specifically June 2nd-4th, brought to you by Comedy Central.

The first ever Clusterfest has a gigantic line-up of the sort proportions and depth that Comedy Central can summon. It’s also the flip of most big time music and arts festival in that it’s mostly comedy with a bit of music as opposed to there being a comedy tent and lots and lots and lots of music a la Bonnaroo, Outside Lands, etc. (Note: producers of both those festivals are involved here). See the line-up below or in this glitterbomb filled announcement video here.

Tickets/passes go on sale this Thursday, March 2nd here. They range from $199.50 earlybird pass-$599.50 VIP Pass.

Chris Gethard’s Solo Show “Career Suicide” Will Air on HBO in May

When it comes to comedy specials, HBO still is a force to be reckoned with.

Despite Netflix nabbing specials from Chappelle, Rock, Seinfeld, and Schumer for this year, HBO choosing to release Chris Gethard comedy special from his Off-Broadway show could bode very well for them.

Also, please note how ironic the concept of something called “Career Suicide” being an HBO special is.
