Pick of the Day: Little Secret Climate Fest (in LA) 9/30

September 20, 2023
News
adam conover, climate action, little secret, los angeles comedy, variety show

Today, the UN has convened for a climate summit that supposedly will address the dire circumstances that the entire global population faces from undeniable climate change. Only four years ago, Greta Thunberg had assembled the largest climate protest in Manhattan and, as you can see in the headlines, natural disasters around the world have only gotten more violent since then (minus those few months during COVID-19 quarantine where everyone stayed inside, for the most part).

That’s all to say that a lot more has to be done, which is why Little Secret is throwing a big climate action bonanza at the end of this month. The best comedy, music, and climate focused minds will be coming together for Little Secret Climate Fest on Sat. Sept. 30th at 8:30PM.

On the bill thus far are Adam Conover, Leah Bonnema, Echo Kellum, Lance Bangs as well as Jenny O., Escape Artist of Lovers (feat. Rain Phoenix), Grace Mckagan, Amanda & Shepard Fairey, and many, many more. Proceeds will benefit the work of @sunrisemvmtla & @ycstrikela.

For all of this, tickets are only $10. Plus there’s a really kicking after party, per usual at Little Secret, going late.

Go get tickets here (address given 48 hrs. before event w/purchase of ticket).

Pick of the Day: Summer School: Entertainment Community Fund Benefit (in LA) 6/1

May 31, 2023
News
adam conover, andrew dismukes, jenny yang, katrina davis, los angeles comedy, mike o'brien, Sophie Delaney, virgil, wga strike, writer's strike

We’re almost at a month since this current WGA Strike began and all signs point towards it continuing for more weeks to come. As such, anything supporting the Entertainment Community Fund is crucial right now as many of those on the picket line are of humble means and are currently living off of reserves in their bank account.

There already have been a few comedy benefits supporting the ECF already in LA and NYC and there are sure more to come including the one, Summer School, happening this Thurs. Jun. 1st at 7PM at the Virgil that will double as a benefit for the ECF and People’s City Council Mutual Aid LA Fund.

The likes of such comedy stars (as well as a couple SNL folks) will be in attendance including: Andrew Dismukes, Adam Conover, Mike O’Brien, Jenny Yang, Katrina Davis, and Sophie Delaney along with hosts Aly Dixon, Elizabeth Schantz, and Jess Uhler.

Tickets are only $15 and admission is free for WGA members. Go get tickets and support the ECF/PCC Mutual Aid/WGA Strike here.

Adam Conover Is Set to Ruin Whatever You Thought You Knew About the Government with “The G Word”

May 6, 2022
News
adam conover, netflix, the g word, trailer

It has been far too long since Adam Conover has been serving his incredibly clever edutainment via the beloved series Adam Ruins Everything. In fact, it feels like it has been a decade since a sharply dressed Conover “ruined” something for the collective consciousness, but that probably has something to do with the last episode airing in late 2019 and then a certain pandemic bringing everything to a screeching halt (as well as TruTV changing their network brass and programming strategy).

Well, thankfully, Conover is back with a brand new series that aims to enlighten about the actual day-to-day functioning of the government, specifically the parts that we almost never seen on TV. Due to the actions or inactions of folks like Mitch McConnell or POTUS Biden, there continues to be a deep distrust of the government even though they are plenty of non-partisan, essential moving parts to the government apparatus. Conover is seeking to comedically present a lot of those folks responsible for said parts and then have you reassess your feelings about “the G word”

You can take a gander of what Adam has up his very sharply suited sleeve with the first trailer for The G Word here, then look for the premiere on May 19th.

Pick of the Day: Performance Anxiety (in LA) 4/26

April 21, 2022
News
adam conover, blair socci, comedy show, dana donnelly, eli olsberg, hampton yount, joe mande, los angeles, pleasure chest, river butcher, subhah agarwal

LA has had a penchant for doing comedy shows in odd places for decades, long before any sort of pandemic reached the county line.

One of those spots was the famed adult toy store, The Pleasure Chest, that featured the bi-weekly delight known as Performance Anxiety, hosted by Eli Olsberg. The last Performance Anxiety that was on the books was on Mar. 10, 2020 and it has been so long since that time that we forgot to see if it might even come back or if there would ever be anything to happen live and in person back at The Pleasure Chest.

Thankfully, it’s another thing that is confidently coming back to this side of the pandemic on Tues. Apr. 26th at 8PM PT (with the same nice price that they had in 2020, $7) and the same sort of fantastic line-up of comics surrounded by a bunch of sex toys and accessories.

This very first post-lockdown Performance Anxiety will feature the likes of Adam Conover, Joe Mande, River Butcher, Blair Socci, Hampton Yount, Dana Donnelly, and Subhah Agarwal.

Go get your tickets right now right here for one of the kinkier comedy shows that you’ll ever go to.

Pick of the Day: Ground Game LA Winter Fundraiser 12/10

December 2, 2020
News
adam conover, comedy livestream, d'arcy carden, fatima iobal zubair, fundraiser, ground game la, Ira Madison, konstantine anthony, Mal Blum, nicole byer, nithya raman, quinta brunson, rhea butcher

The election is well past us now and Biden is going to be 46th POTUS, which means Trump won’t thankfully be President anymore. In LA, a lot of progressive measures/candidates got voted in. Yet, as you might very well know, there is plenty of more organizing, strategizing, mobilizing that has to be done to actually affect real change.

Ground Game LA has been a great mutual aid LA org that will be crucial going forward in instituting and sustaining said change. Thus, they’re putting on a virtual Winter Fundraiser that will not only include appearances by newly elected LA councilwoman Nithya Raman, but a stacked row of LA comedy favorites such as D’arcy Carden, Ira Madison, Quinta Brunson, Adam Conover, Mal Blum, Nicole Byer, and Rhea Butcher.

Some of the best comedy live-streams have been benefit fundraisers, especially when Nithya has been involved, and this Ground Game LA Winter Fundraiser should be no different. The live-stream is set for Dec. 10th at 7PM PT/10PM ET and donations will be accepted for access (you can even stream for free if you’d like).

Adam Conover Set to Host Another Necessary Sketch Edutainment Series “The G Word” About Government

November 19, 2020
News
adam conover, barack obama, edutainment, michelle obama, the g word

(via Deadline)

Since the end of the brilliant Adam Ruins Everything, we truly believed it was only a matter of time before Adam was going to get do something in that vein again on television. Conover did get another TV gig after this as host of family friendly competition series The Crystal Maze and kept up his blend of comedy and knowledge and insight on his podcast, Factually!

As of today (or probably weeks ago when Conover got the green light), we were right. Adam Conover will be doing a whole new sketch series, The G Word, in partnership with The Obamas on Netflix that examines the folks that represent “the g word”/government,  and what they really do with a comedic lens. The Obamas have an overall deal at Netflix and, as far as we’re concerned, this will be one of the more intriguing things on their slate.

The show is described thus far as a sketch series with some “documentary elements”, which is reminiscent of Adam Ruins Everything. Whether it’ll essentially be Adam Ruins Government or something that takes a slightly different angle into civil service will have to wait until next year since production is set to start at the beginning of 2021. We’ll also be curious to see how much Barack and Michelle Obama will figure into this series and how much Conover might closely examine Obama’s two terms as POTUS.

Conover is one of the best at fitting dense, complex subject matter into several very clever sketches and bits and it’s a good omen for 2021 that he’ll get to do it again.

Pick of the Day: Outdoor Comedy Night 10/17

October 15, 2020
News
adam conover, ali macofsky, blair socci, Caleb Hearon, laci mosley, live comedy, steve hernandez

A line-up of Adam Conover, Ali Macofsky, Blair Socci, Caleb Hearon, Laci Mosley, and Steve Hernandez is so solid that they would be worth seeing in almost any setup.

Fortunately, we’re not just hipping you to another show on Zoom. This will be one of those, in times like these, one of those live, in person, outdoor shows that you might have started to hear about.

So, you just might want to catch them, live and in-person (socially distant and, again, outside, of course) this weekend at a just outside of a studio stage. To hammer the point home about being outside, it’s called Outdoor Comedy Night @ Sibling Studio in Atwater Village and they will have an early and a late show, 7:30PM & 9:30PM, for $28 a pop.

You can and should go get your tickets here and here respectively.

Pick of the Day: A Benefit for Guns Down America 8/26

August 20, 2020
News
adam conover, cameron esposito, guns down america, josh johnson, nick guerra

Gun control, unfortunately, is still an issue in the U.S. amongst every other crucial issue that’s happening in the country right now. That being said, that also means that there is organizations and people that are still striving for a better future in regards to that issue (and that there is comedy benefit to boot).

So, Josh Johnson, Cameron Esposito, Adam Conover, Nick Guerra (and more TBA) will convene (virtually) at the Nowhere Comedy Club this coming Wed., Aug. 26th at 5:30PM PT/8:30PM ET to support Guns Down America, “a community powered organization that brings together Americans from across the country to solve our national gun crisis in strategic and creative ways.”

Given the actions of NRA as of late (and throughout the last several years), striving for real movement on gun control is imperative and this ought to be one sweet show in supporting efforts to make that happen.

Tickets are $25-$50 and you can (and should really) get tickets here.

Adam Conover, probably best known as the host that “ruins” it all (i.e. enlightens with information where most of us just took things for granted) is going on tour throughout this Winter.

Called Mind Parasites Live!, we’re sure (well, pretty sure) there won’t be any actual brain-eating insects (though the inside of Adam’s brain in the poster looks pretty damn metal) and rather, a bevy of edutainment offered by one of the best in the game.

So far there are 24 cities and you can get your tickets right now. Do so here.

TruTV Renews Adam Ruins Everything, Orders Guy Branum’s Talk Show the Game Show to Series, and Is Developing Projects from Austin Martinez and Martin Starr and Matt Bush

Many of you don’t even know the greatness that’s about to come with Guy Branum’s Talk Show the Game Show being made into a TV show, but, hopefully, you’ll know soon enough thanks to TruTV.

Today, via press release, TruTV announced its upcoming slate of programming and development that happened to have plenty of things that have us excited for the network in 2017.

With a Trump Administration looming, Adam Conover and his ‘bigly’ tendency to ruin things will be very nice to have for a sixteen episode second season of Adam Ruins Everything.

Guy Branum’s Talk Show the Game Show is a competitive talk show where guests have to compete to be the best, most interesting guest dealing with the sharp wit of host Guy Branum. It’s a gem here in LA that we’ve enjoyed for years and we can’t wait for the rest of the country to see what happens when guests can just rely on the story of their weird ride to the airport to get through a late night segment.

Sketch duo Austin Martinez got to incubate on Rachel Dratch’s Late Night Snack on TruTV and will now get upgraded to developing a series of their own. An animated family marijuana dispensary comedy from Martin Starr and Matt Bush is also in development.

In addition to that upcoming Bobcat Goldthwait anthology series, TruTV could have a pretty great 2017.
