Larry David’s “Fish In The Dark” Grossing Millions Just in Advance Ticket Sales on Broadway

February 23, 2015
Uncategorized
broadway, fish in the dark, larry david

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

Despite Larry David’s fear of pitchforks from his first foray into Broadway, his play Fish in the Dark is doing pretty, pretty, pretty great.

After 8 preview performances, it grossed over a $1 million and has already sold $13.5 million worth of advance tickets.

Our guess is that every single performance of Fish In The Dark will probably sold out even though it’s officially opening at the beginning of March and running up until the first week of June. So, get your tickets while you can.

If there’s another season of Curb Your Enthusiasm, maybe it will be centered around Larry writing and starring in a play?

In seeing Michael Ian Black this year, not only do we have the Wet Hot American Summer series at Netflix to look forward to, but now there’s a new podcast/audio show/online audiobook where Black interviews remarkable people and how they do their remarkable things.

It’s called How To Be Amazing and already has episodes up at Audible.com for free with Tavi Gevison and Bob Odenkirk. This will probably be the closest will get to see what it was like when Michael Ian Black was on a short list as potential host of The Late Late Show before it went to Craig Ferguson.

John Oliver Dissects Electing Judges in The U.S.

For kids, School House Rock was an effective way to teach them about very complex and nuanced concepts, especially when it come to government. However, there’s only so much that School House Rock can explain in a fun pop melody and rhyme and there’s only a limited time in your life where you rely on it for the entirety of your political efficacy.

Luckily, John Oliver and Last Week Tonight can pick up where many of us signed off during high school government and civics classes and examine the most dense subjects within our government infrastructure while also making them pretty hilarious.

That’s what Oliver did this week in picking apart the election of high ranking judges in this country. Watch it all here.

Get Your Screwball Comedy Kicks With This Trailer For “Wild Canaries”

Uncategorized

For the preponderance of dramedy that’s recently come out in TV and movies, the sillier side of comedy could use a bit of a boost.

This trailer for screwball whodunit relationship comedy Wild Canaries might be that little boost. Written, directed, and co-starring Lawrence Michael Levine, it follows a recently engaged filmmaking duo that investigates the death of the neighbor in the apartment below. If you need a little more enticing, Alia Shawkat is also in the cast.

It comes out this Wed. Feb. 25th, FYI, just after your interest is peaked by watching the trailer.

Jimmy Kimmel has got a lot standing traditions from doing Jimmy Kimmel Live. His post-Oscars special and punking Matt Damon are two in particular that he brought together last night in The Kimmel School of Perfect Acting after last night’s Oscars telecast.

Watch as the likes of Eddie Reymane, Jennifer Aniston, Jeff Bridges, Sean Penn, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, Gary Oldman, and, of course, Matt Damon in some degrading capacity learn acting from the “master” Jim Kimmel.

“Birdman” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” Also Win Big at The Oscars

February 24, 2015
Uncategorized
birdman, grand budapest hotel, the oscars

If you were to imagine the perfect Oscar bait movie, it would probably involve some sort historical tragedy played by the best thespians of our time from all over the world, directed by the most revered helmers in this generation, and based on either a true story or a book that was based in a true story.

The two big winners at this year’s Oscars couldn’t be further from that stereotype. Birdman of (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) and The Grand Budapest Hotel, together, took home 8 Oscars, and are both comedies that are shot from original screenplays set in fictional worlds both satirical and exquisitely delightful. Both do have fantastic writer/directors in Wes Anderson and Alejandro González iñárritu as well as fantastic casts led by Ralph Fiennes and Michael Keaton.

So, it’s an atypical year for comedy at The Oscars in that the genre was actually shown some appreciation rather than being relegated to the Best Writing sometimes.

In the end:

Birdman won Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Cinematography, and Best Writing-Original Screenplay.

The Grand Budapest Hotel won Best Costume Design, Best Makeup and Hairstyling, Best Music-Original Score, and Best Production Design

See the rest of the Oscars winners here.

Last year saw a big win for diversity and this year was for genre and hopefully the two will continue make headway at The Academy in the years to come.

Jason Jones and Samantha Bee Comedy Picked Up To Series at TBS

(via The Hollywood Reporter)

They still don’t have a name for the show, but the family vacation comedy from The Daily Show’s correspondent couple Jason Jones and Samantha Bee has gotten 10 episode order from TBS.

From the sound of what has been described, it seems like it might be a 21st century take on where National Lampoon’s Vacation film franchise left off. The Vacation franchise is also picking up where it left off with a reboot starring Ed Helms later this year.

WIth the announcement of the series pick-up, Jones has tweeted that he’ll be leaving The Daily Show as well since he will be plenty busy writing, starring, etc. in this new show.

Apparently, French Late Night Show Ripped Off Conan’s “Tull Tips”

As you can see here, here, and here, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed prop master Bill Tull’s budget saving tips over the years on Conan.

Apparently, a very popular french late night show “Touche Pas a Mon Poste” has copied the segment pretty much exactly without any sort of credit.

Conan announced this discovery on last night’s Conan, but did so in such good stride claiming that he wants the French and American government cooperating and more.

So much for the good will gotten from Kristen Stewart being the first American to win a César, but it’s good to see a prop master like Tull rise to international acclaim.

Ed Begley Jr., Mary Holland, More Join “Blunt Talk”

One of this upcoming TV season’s most intriguing new shows is Showtime’s Blunt Talk. Not only does it have Seth MacFarlane and Jonathan Ames coming together to make a show about a Brit trying to take on American cable news, but Patrick Stewart is starring.

To make matters more intriguing, the entire cast will now include Jackie Weaver, Ed Begley Jr., Adian Scarborough, Mary Holland, Romany Malco, and Karan Soni.

There are so many different elements at work here, with the fantastic people in front of and behind the camera, but this could very well be a “Veep” of cable news.

The Cast of “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” Show That They Have Tattoos Just Like Their Fans

OK, Charlie, Mac, Dennis, Dee, and Frank are probably a little more extreme than their fans, but that’s why the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia loyal love them so much.

Certainly, there’s a similarity in the types of tattoos that the cast and fans of the show get, but, true to form, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, and Rob McElhenney go a little further than their fans.

Watch them show off while on Conan here.

Another Reminder That The Finale of “Parks and Recreation” Is Tonight

10PM tonight on NBC, Parks and Recreation closes out its amazing 7 season run, which will include a tribute to the late writer and EP Harris Wittels.

There are plenty of think pieces and oral histories that detail why this TV series was so important and so damn good including making all 7 seasons memorable, maintaining an unflinching tone of positivity in a vast, grounded reality of Pawnee, and creating some what will be some of TV’s all time most beloved characters.

Instead, we’ll cut this short like Ron Swanson would prefer and just say, “Watch it, please and thank you.”

“Might as well hire me now before the Latin Grammy’s catch wind of my availability and scoop me up.”

–Tig Notaro

Tig has written an open letter to The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that she should be considered to host the 2016 Oscars awards ceremony. She gives plenty of great reasons like the one above as well as being able to promote the telecast through her podcast.

If this seriously happens, we’d bet it would be one of the most unforgettable Oscars ever and might bring back those 7 million folks who went missing from this year’s Oscars telecast ratings.

You can read Tig’s letter in full here and then please share it #HashTigOscars

The great comedy group Wild Horses (Lauren Lapkus, Stephanie Allynne, Mary Holland, Erin Whitehead) show us all that the best thing about a bank heist may not be the big life-changing pay day at the end, but, rather, it’s planning it with your best friends.

Watch their “heist” here.

DC Pierson is seeking to adapt his novel The Boy Who Couldn’t Sleep And Never Had To along with his team Dan Eckman and Meggie McFadden into a feature length film. In the quest to do so, he has made this nice short film as a proof-of-concept to show how great a film of his book following a kid discovering that he can make things in a comic book appear in real life can be.

You might notice that that’s Tony Revolori, Zero from The Grand Budapest Hotel, and Jack Quaid in a short that could double as a pretty great teaser.

So, Internet, do what you do best and let the word spread and, hopefully, the powers that be will take note and make a full fledged movie.

Right after the finale of Parks and Recreation aired last night, the entire cast as well as co-creator Mike Schur (and a special guest that came to “Jamm” things up) appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers to relive all the memories.

Of course, the goodbye, perhaps the last time all of them will be in a room together went as memorable and as in the spirit-of-Parks-and-Rec as it could be.

There was a barely rehearsed song for Seth Meyers.

There were toasts from one cast member to another one picked from a hat.

There was even another song that was supposed to be a final rendetion of “Bye, Bye Li’l Sebastian”, but Jim O’Heir, Aubrey Plaza, and Jon Glaser had other plans.

Continuing in the direction of making the landscape of television less male and white, both NBC and HBO have just announced programs designed to find diverse talent.

More specifically, NBC has partnered with the legendary Second City to find new sketch talent (via The Wrap) in the form of fellowships, scholarship awards, and a festival. Hopefully, this will help them avoid such things as having to hold a “secret” audition for a new black female cast member for SNL.

HBO has launched their own HBOAccess Writing Fellowship that will search for unrepresented writers from “diverse backgrounds” (via Deadline). If accepted, you’ll get a week long intensive, 8 months writing/development period with HBO top brass, and a live table read. With Girls, Silicon Valley, Veep, The Comeback, and Togetherness, we’re HBO would like to continue their hot comedy streak.
