Dave Made a Maze Is One of the Most Imaginative Comedies We’ve Seen in Awhile

September 11, 2017

On top of having one of the most magical production designs that we’ve ever seen in a film (honestly, it’s a misfire if Production Designers John Sumner and Trisha Gum don’t at least get nominated for an Oscar, Spirit Award, or something), Dave Made a Maze bends and blends genres (comedy, romance, adventure, thriller, mockumentary), is devilishly self-reflexive, and thoroughly a very fun ride of a movie.

This offering from director/co-writer Bill Watterson and writer Steve Sears is a surprise that definitely is the refreshing surprise that theaters across America needed this Summer. Dave Made a Maze definitely lives in a universe somewhere between Michel Gondry and The Duplass Brothers.

We should also note that comedian/actor Nick Thune is perfectly cast here as the titular ‘Dave’ and to not be surprised if you see the charming Meera Rohit Kumbhani on more screens in the near future.

There are a few U.S. screenings left, but you can go watch Dave Made a Maze on iTunes or buy it on DVD or Blu-ray.

There’s No Shortage of Larry David Being Larry David in Trailer for Season 9 of Curb Your Enthusiasm

Curb Your Enthusiasm is coming back for season 9 on HBO on Sunday, October 1st.

As you can clearly see in the season 9 trailer, Larry David hasn’t lost in step in being a grouch. If anything, he may have actually upped his game a bit in being curmudgeon.

Shane Torres’ “Established 1981″ Makes Dark Places Seem Kind of Charming

From both his own name and the name of his album as well as the album’s cover, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume that Shane Torres’ Established 1981 might be an hour of honest comedy tapped directly from Shane’s life that may snake its way through dark subject matter.

For this debut album, Shane indeed goes through stories and observations of a life that has been run through the ringer more than a few times. However, Shane has an unmistakable air of optimism in his comedic perspective, which left us with a smile on our face and the notion that maybe, things/life/etc. might be OK (eventually).

Get a taste of that here as he discusses a victorious way to quit your job.

Shane Torres’ Established 1981 is now available off of Comedy Central Records.

BoJack Horseman Season 4 Now Streaming

If you were to imagine a few years ago whether a dark, dramatic animated comedy about a former sitcom star horse dealing with his own existential crises would not only make it through 4 seasons, but be one of the more celebrated animated comedies on television, you might have had second thoughts.

Yet, season 4 of BoJack Horseman has arrived today as one of the more anticipated blocks of television from Netflix this year. All episodes are now streaming.

Here are two little nibbles from the new season if you need a taste (or somehow don’t have access to a Netflix account).

It looks like the time for the Trepany House at Steve Allen Theater is actually coming to an end, and, with it, The Tomorrow Show with Ron Lynch (an LA comedy institution as far as we’re concerned) seems to be ending as well.

Though it has been running for over a decade every Saturday at midnight, there’s only a month’s worth of ‘Tomorrow’ left and, as such, this week’s show is a special “MASH-UP!” that gives a sampling of Crapshoot!, Five Minutes or Die!, and Hook-Up! (i.e. the various fan favorite formats of Tomorrow).

So, please make sure you see this or one of the three other Tomorrows. You can (and should) get tickets for this week’s MASH-UP! here.

Veep Will Come to an End in Seventh Season

Another one of TV’s great comedies will come to an end on their terms.

Even with the series going way farther than the vast majority of comedies these days, series creator Armando Iannucci moving on to The Death of Stalin, and the Trump Administration giving the series a weird life-mirroring-art curveball, Julia Louis-Dreyfus has a second iconic role under her belt and showrunner David Mandel will be very likely going out in the best position possible.

“It became clear that this season should be the last season,” Louis-Dreyfus says. “We don’t want to repeat ourselves or wear out our welcome. The story has a finality to it that feels end-of-series.”

Trailer for Ruben Östlund’s The Square Shows Chaos Run Amok in the Contemporary Art World

September 6, 2017
Uncategorized

Swedish director Ruben Östlund is one of the rare modern day auteurs that deals often in comedy. 2014′s Force Majeure made Östlund’s presence known as someone who can make a high art comedy film that isn’t covered in pretension.

Östlund’s latest, The Square, nabbed one of cinema’s most revered prizes, The Cannes Palme d’Or, which isn’t an award that ever really goes to any sort of comedic work. Even more impressive, he seems to have made a truly international movie with stars from all over the globe (Claes Bang from Denmark, Dominic West from UK, Elisabeth Moss from the US) without having it seemed forced.

On top of all of that, The Square appears to be a devilishly calculated, comedic dressing down of the art world and the people who run it.

See all of this for yourself in the trailer here.

The Square starts its theatrical release on October 27th.

Marc Maron’s Latest Special “Too Real” Is Now Streaming

Marc Maron’s latest hour, Too Real, gives a nice sampling of the various versions of Marc that have done stand-up over the years, done with all the calm of the current centered and focused Marc Maron.

What’s fascinating is the bold opening few minutes on Trump that beautifully segue into the rest of Marc’s trademark introspective self-examination pondering on a stool (we like to call it “Maron-ating”). Take note that fiery political comedy is something that Marc has shifted away from after his Air America years, but, as you’ve probably heard plenty of times over, every comedian is political now because of who is in the White House.

So, in the same strokes, you can see hints of the old fiery Marc, but through the lense of the empathetic, self-aware-of-the-human-condition Marc.

Marc Maron: Too Real is now streaming on Netflix.

Greta Gerwig Looks to Have Cooked Up Something Special for Her Writer/Director Debut “Lady Bird”

September 5, 2017
Uncategorized

For years, Greta Gerwig has not only shone in front of the camera as nuanced, complex characters, often in Noam Baumbach movies, but she has worked her way in collaborating behind the camera (she co-penned the fantastic Mistress America).

Now, Gerwig has taken full control of the reins with the coming-of-age dramedy film she wrote and directed, Lady Bird. The notion of being disillusioned with the suburbs, growing up Catholic, parents isn’t anything new, but the trailer shows a special touch from Gerwig (we should add that it’s one that has done well to work with Baumbach so much) along with what looks to be another star performance from Saoirse Ronan.

See for yourself here.

Lady Bird starts rolling into theaters on Friday, November 10th.
